  • In this episode, Mike and David discuss Sony's classic WM-D6C Walkman Professional cassette portable.
It's 'handbags at dawn' time, when David produces his much loved and well used example, only to be trumped by Mike's new, mint, boxed one!
But they both agree that this is a serious bit of kit - a little cassette recorder that thinks it's as good as a Nakamichi, and has the performance to prove it!
Each episode of Hi-Fi Riff features their unedited, unexpurgated views about all manner of weird and wonderful hi-fi designs. Mike has a wealth of knowledge from his hi-fi retail years, and David has written about hi-fi for thirty years. Now Editor-in-Chief of StereoNET, he's picked up a few things along the way.
So brew up a cuppa or crack open a can, and relax and enjoy some one-take hi-fi riffing - and please leave your comments below. Oh, and don’t forget to hit the Subscribe button, this one goes up to eleven!
The eighties-tastic title tune is called ‘UFO/Mike’s Jumper’, and used with the express permission of our old pal and rights holder Simon Lythe.

Hi, Ex-Sony audio service engineer here. Had, owned, sold multiple, regretted it, and bought another mint one and fully upgraded it. They truly are quite wonderful pieces of equipment. A mint condition one without box would be approximately £1000 now, with box (sealed) depending on condition, can be anything up to £3000. Surprisingly, due to the dedicated following around the world, new parts are now being made for this model including replacement hybrid IC's and cabinet parts. Such is the timeless devoted following for this little cassette recorder. Ast..

I have 3 of these. 1. Works great (might need belt replacement) 2. Powers on no sound 3. No power.
Looking for someone in Australia to restore them. They truly are a great piece of history.
Would appreciate if someone could direct me towards restoring them. TIA

A truly revered product and you two guys are becoming something of a Hi-Fi channel treasure too! I've never had the pleasure of using one of these but it's hard for me to get my head around how a portable can mix it with proper 'separates' sized decks in playback and record quality, and from 1984 too. These truly were the days. Oh Sony, what hath happened to thee....?

Woah😮! What a classic! In the old days I always took mine to the gym and loved the sound so much that I spent hours on the cardio machine and it helped me get to 8% body fat!
Now I’m a bit of a lard ass, so I better dust it off and get moving again!!!

I just had mine repaired. It still works brilliantly. I bought it in the 80s to record concerts. I sent Orbital a copy of their "secret" pre-Glastonbury gig in Manchester and they put me on the guest list for loads of their concerts. What a machine 🎧🎵

    Best portable recording cassette decks:
    1. Sony TC-D5m
    2. Uher CR160
    3. Marantz PMD 430
    4. Sony WM-D6 (c)
    5. Nakamichi 350 / 550
    6. Technics RS-686DS
    7. Superscope CD330
Of these the Sony WM-D6 is by far the smallest

Oh wow. I was that student with a Walkman Pro (bought on HP!) recording from an LP12 and power supply from a Naim SNAPS. The SNAPS was officially modified by Naim for 6VDC. When I did recordings for friends, they could not understand why my tapes sounds so much better.

I bought 2 of these and a 3rd original D6 (green writing instead of yellow) with the pointy amorphous pro heads that were not used in later editions. One of the D6Cs is a 5 digit serial original spec, but nice to see the pair of them this video. They were "cheap" before the G.O.T.G film skyrocketed their prices, managed to grab Cassette Deck 1 and a CR7 around this time as well when everyone was getting rid of stuff like this on Ebay.

I had one of these until the late 90s bought used in the late 80s. I can’t recall what I did with it… Did I sell it to buy a CDP, did it break, did I give it away, I have no recollection.

Great stuff guys! Keep it up with the reviews of classic stuff you seem to be the only Brits doing it, and as much of the kit is still in circulation loads of folk like me are still buying it! (Just got an old Exposure integrated for example). Had a walkman pro back in the day to do interviews and play music and thought it was fantastic. The clarity of the sound was amazing.

I’ve still got mine. The later 1984 edition with Dobly (sorry) C.
I’ve still got the instructions and leather case with strap. Not used that much since new in 1990. I wouldn’t part with it.

Tell you something - the money that thing made through the hands of big name songwriters... because it was portable. Nagra a bit harder to find and also reel. The DM is a studio start for some albums, true.

I had one in the late 80s. I always felt it was a bit rolled off at the frequency extremes. The playback only version was the DC2 which sounded better all round to my ears. I also thought the Denon range of cassette decks were amazing at the time.

    • @MrVinylista
      @MrVinylista 2 года назад +1

It was of course set up from the factory for Sony tapes, which weren't the industry standard. Recordings on a TDK SA could sound a little dull, especially if you had Dobly switched in with its 15kHz MPX filter. I use mainly Sony UX Pro (type II) and Maxell UD-XLIIS (ditto) without Dobly and it's pretty open up top. But as you say, you could do better - especially with a high end variable bias deck. Agree also about those late eighties Denons, especially the high end ones.
