Top man. Why they don't include this in the instructions is beyond me. They show how to relocate the bolt between centre & outside position, but nothing at all about turning the hinge around. This fixed a very annoying problem (I had even bought a hook contraption to keep the seat up!). Many thanks!
I know that this video was first published back in 2009, but right now in 2020 it helped me to install a brand new toilet seat. TWO THUMBS UP TO YOU!!! 😊👍👍😊
Thank you so much, this helped a great deal. My toilet seat was wobbly, but after watching this vid, it only took me 5 mins to fix it. I was going to call someone in to do it. You saved me a fortune. Thank you again.
Thank you so much for this:)) Bought a new loo seat yesterday and couldn't work out why the seat wouldn't stay up, I googled it and your video showed up. Magic, thanks for the knowledge! Shame the manufacturer's instructions don't mention this.
yes at last its done! I've done it! thanks to you and to the Scotsman with the ironing board demonstration i didn't have both washers on the underside either its tight as can be now. thank goodness for how to ppl like you!
Hey, thank you for the video and I hope you still get notifications on comments. I've got a toilet seat with these fittings but the part that's lose on mine is the part where the seat connects to the lid with the toilet fixings in the middle. I can't see any part that can come away but both sides are loose, I can't find any videos or advice on that particular section. Could you help please?
Very clear, very helpful, completely unambigous, thank you! This was about the 3rd video I found, but the only one that matches what I thought was a standard UK fitting, with multiple places for the bolts and screws to go. Excellent!
Thank you! I couldn't figure why a standard loo and a standard seat were so badly fitting but this fixed it - and my other half will be happy to not have to hold the seat up anymore, bonus!
I had the similar issue with my new toilet seat and i fixed it after seeing this video. thank you so much for sharing the information it was very helpful.
OMG! Why did I put off this job for so long. Thanks so much. I'm looking forward to the next time I need to use it as opposed to really being very annoyed!
Thanks for your time to save my life my wife is out with family and left me one job to fit a new toilet seat could not make it say up for the life of me and I've got four boys , if you get my drift...A big thanks .........
Screw that, on behalf of the female population with no parents who need to learn these things, we salute you!! Thanks for helping us to remain independent!! ❤
Hello, I've followed exactly what you've done as I have the same toilet system but the seat still moves side to side.. Where am I going wrong?! It just wont secure :-(
Brilliant thanks just fixed mines Awesome video it really helped Been waiting for someone to fix mine for about a week came across your video Before watching the three others Yours was the best Fixed it in no time
God bless you, i’ve had this problem (and the seat moving sides to sides) for months now. I’ve cried last time i’ve tried to fix it and had no idea how. I almost got blisters on my fingers from spinning in and out and tightening it. I’ve just seen your video a few times and fixed it straight away. Again, God bless you, your video was a lifesaver…I felt like giving up…
I think most toilets are one size fits all, but it depends on the country. I remember a mate of mine going to Sweden, he said that when he sat on a toilet his feet did not touch the floor! 👍
My toilet seat problem is a little different. It stays up fine but it isn't straight when it is down. By this I mean it isn't centered horizontally. It is off to the right. Interestingly, I use the same toilet seat on our other toilet and it is perfect.
Hi Chez, I have a question for you that I hope you can answer or offer some advice. My dear old mother-in-law has had her toilet seat changed twice this year (by me) because the seat keeps cracking. I have had a good look and I can see the two centre bumpers on each side, underneath (the part you sit on) are not actually touching the porcelain, there is a gap of about 1cm. I tried using epoxy on two extra bumpers on top of the existing bumpers to close the gap but the epoxy failed and they fell off. Is there a simple solution to this problem because the replacement seats are not cheap.
It might be an idea to check the porcelain is flat, because all of the bumpers should touch it at once to distribute the load. 1cm is a huge gap! Or is it the back two bumpers nearest the hinges that are high?
The front bumpers and the two nearest the hinges touch just fine. It is the two in the centre that don't touch and over time the seat cracks. I did have a look at an Armitage Shanks seat designed for this problem but they want really stupid money.
@@ultimatehandyman i don't know why they make the screws so long, the design is bad and it should be just a short bolt with plastic nuts that you can do with your finger
Nope, it's now worse than when I first started. It's now all loose. Won't tighten again, and it still won't stay up so will continue to have to piss all over the lid.
I've got the same, or at least similar, toilet seat which keeps coming loose. As in, it moves side to side even though the screws underneath are tight. Any suggestions??
You could try using a flat washer, then a spring washer and then another flat washer before the wing nut. That might prevent the wing nut from undoing. ruclips.net/video/oP4KGKEJM8Y/видео.html
Thanks for the reply. I'm clearly useless at things like this.. Think Im going to have to resort to a family member helping out.. hopefully they can resolve it. lol :-)
that's great but... I've turned hinges to bring seat further forward done it up all nice and tight but the seat still doesn't stay in the up position! grrrrr
My problem is that you can't actually get below the hole (i.e. where you put the screw is the only hole). Underneath the toilet it's just porcelain so how do I fix this sort of toilet seat since it seems to be a within system?
I find them plastic screws are crepe; so I replaced mine with standard wing nuts and a couple of extra washers so the underneath is the rubber washer, a small metal washer then the wing nut I find them a darn sight better than the plastic things
Nothing worse! I bought a toilet once from B&Q and when I got it home there was loads of bits missing. Sometimes people open the boxes in store and take components, other times the stuff gets returned and just put back on the shelf without it being checked!
Sometimes they do work loose, perhaps a solution would be to use a spring washer in between two normal washers- this should make it more difficult for the wing nut to undo itself. ruclips.net/video/oP4KGKEJM8Y/видео.html
Oh, great. I'll tell my boyfriend about your suggestion. He complains about the toilet seat at his house. It, doesn't bother me because I always sit down to pee. . Cheers. from, del-boy

THANKS. Had a problem with my previous Shell style seat. Bought slimmer one and had same problem. Watched your video and applied. FANTASTIC
This has the same fixtures as a Homebase toilet I’ve just fitted. The instructions provided in the box were rubbish, but this video helped a lot 😊

Where did u purchase the toilet seat
@ultimatehandyman tapered washers are a good idea, i also put about half an inch of rubber sleeving on the studs to make them a snug fit in the holes

Hello
Can toilets be lowered?
I asked because my feet does not sit flat on the floor when I am using it
I am short.
Are toilets one size fits all?

You can get some good mouldable plastics now such as formcard - www.thermoworx.com/formcard/
perhaps that would mould over the existing bumpers?
Mine has got metal nuts underneath the plastic screwed on tight, hard to access with a spanner
Yeah, there are several different types of fixings used on toilet seats now. Sometimes a ratchet and socket works.
Thanks for the comment 👍

I tried the second hole too but was a wobbly fit
Every toilet fitting is different so this won’t work for me .
Any suggestion re this? The plastic nuts are impossible to turn by hand and cannot see how to get a pair of pliers on them!
Spray penetrant sometimes works, but in the past I have had to break them off and get new nuts!
@@ultimatehandyman Thanks! I may end up getting new nuts like you say!
thank you so much I really appericate it :)
mines is the long way round to give its max distance but still falls down any solution for that?
Not much else you can do, sorry.
I've got this problem. Let's see if I can fix it by following his instructions.
think woman must have designed my toilet

I just purchased this seat from Homebase👍 However there is a piece missing 👎
Nothing worse!
I bought a toilet once from B&Q and when I got it home there was loads of bits missing. Sometimes people open the boxes in store and take components, other times the stuff gets returned and just put back on the shelf without it being checked!
but what can we do about metal hinges getting rusty and at the end I have to change toilet seat after every six months 😓
They should not rust- they should be made from either zinc or stainless steel.
My god thank you.
I made a diving reaction catch this morning, and ended up pissing up the wall. Enough was enough!
Thanks for the comment
why do they never seem to make the studs in brass?:-(
I don’t have a way of adjusting my seat hinge- am considering winding some dental floss in between the joints to tighten it up.
That might work.

Nope don't have them silver bits underneath
🙄
How do you stop your nuts and studs rusting? Lovely to hear your accent, reminds me of when I was younger.
You can't really as they eventually rust unless of course you replace them with stainless steel bolts and wing nuts.
