@@joannbirdsong583 I would love to hear Joshua’s response. I know that I have been one to buy only to return once I get it home. I realize that though I thought I needed it, I realized how well I have done without whatever “it” may be. Also, I had a time in my life where my budget was so small I could only buy the bare essentials. Once I finally had more money each month I realized that I was literally unable to buy non-essential items without HORRIBLE buyer’s remorse as I had learned living with less was to much calmer. Also, my entire life became uncluttered due to a disability and I was shocked to go from being on the go all of the time no longer appealed to me. I learned that a quiet life was so much easier. I may have a bit of PTSD too though, but even with that I am able to minimize my reactions when my buttons get pushed. Therefore my moments of anxiety or panic pass me by much more quickly. I know we all have our own issues in life who make us who we are, but I really am hoping Joshua will answer your question as I know I am very curious. 🤔 Time will tell. You can also drop him a message directly. Just a thought which popped in. IF you can afford it though and it is something you can and will use remember what he had to say about making a purchase during a time of banning yourself. Just accept it and ask why you really could use it to better your self and/or life!!?? Hope you find some great answers!!

I ask myself these questions and if after that I would still like it I would put it on a Wishlist and then go back to it a few weeks later. Reminds me of the "spending moratoriums" I used to do when I was in graduate school. I would put my credit card inside of a little envelope that had the question, "do I really need this?" written across it. This small gimmick was super helpful. I like the idea of doing this again as it relates to enhancing minimalism in my life as well as saving $. Thanks Joshua!

Covid has been great to reset my habits regarding food purchasing. I used to eat out lunch alone, purchasing quick dinner options for my family or just eating out. I have been spending less and enjoying food more by cooking at home. I stocked up my pantry and cook a variety of heathier options at home.
Each dollar I saved was a dollar I was able to use to purchase plants this spring for my yard/garden to enjoy during the summer.
I also look at how much something costs and think about how much of my time at work I needed to give up to obtain the item or meal out. Most meals are memorable enough to eat out. I am now working on embracing the only eating out for a special occasion or better yet, purchasing special ingredients to make an even better meal at home. 😋

You are soooooo right about shopping bans! I did a no buy experiment for 6 months (I only spent money on food and entertainment) and was astounded by how much it raised my awareness of how often the urge to spend money came to me. I wanted to spend money just about everyday! But because I set a strict ban, I resisted the purchases and after awhile, I was happy that I didn't buy whatever hit my fancy at the time. The ban gave me an opportunity to examine the role mindless consumption had on me. Afterwards, the habit kind of stuck.i am so much more mindful of the purchases I do make. Thanks for another great video, Joshua!

    Count me in!!!
The more you shop, the more you have to “store” in your home... the more you need to declutter... it’s a vicious cycle. We’ve convinced ourselves that we need so much stuff to be “relevant”... 75% of the things we buy we don’t need... I’m onboard with this ban 100%!!! I won’t beat myself up if I slip... I’ll keep reminding myself of why I started...

Appreciate how you just launch into the topic right away without a repetive intro. Makes me wanna watch more and more of your videos. Am learning heaps and getting super motivated to declutter and reduce more! I don't shop for fun that much anymore (unless I am very stressed and it is a form of expensive therapy, very seldom anyway). But I do go a bit nuts at a thrift store most times. So I do get lots of things coming into my home, but I am good about donating things back when I am 'over' those items. I call it retail therapy 'lite'. That's not bad for the environment, keeps businesses running and a great way to fufil the 'gatherer' instinct.

I've still got a long way to go to becoming minimalist, I hate going shopping but I do brows the Internet and sometimes buy stuff without too much thought. I gave myself a good talking to and decided if I want to buy something I have to get rid of something first, whilst I'm thinking of what to part with I talk myself out of buying the new item, I feel great UNTIL a few days later I absentmindely order something 😕 BUT I am enjoying the decluttering, I'm getting rid of far much stuff than I ever thought I could and it's getting easier. I actually feel irritated and sometimes even repulsed by how much stuff I still have ( the charity shops are more than happy for me to offload though 😊) Thanks again Joshua, you are an absolute tonic.💖

Hello! I am a shopowner and of course, if consumers stopped buying from me - I would be out of work. How about a video adressing that when you spend money, take a step back and think - what shop is the most important shop to me - and IF and WHEN I buy something I buy it from this shop. I can see so many - and me myself work on this - that its easy that when money is spent - there is a sense of unconciousness - instead of focused and deliberate spending. I have seen in my quilting life that the more I reduced hobby items, the more time and energy I have to create. And of course, then I am more deliberate to what I bring home to create things from. When I go to town, and have errands, I take a step back and think - ok - what are the three most important shops to me in town, and then I make my purchases there. I build a personal relaitonship to the owners and people who work there - and the money spent are happy money.

Another idea like this: limit yourself to buying only items which you have written [in detail] onto a list, with there being a timeframe/delay between the item going onto the list and the item being purchased. You review and remove items [before purchase] on a regular basis.

When the urge bites you go out and buy something food, blankets, a jacket or a cardigan FOR SOMEONE POOR OR HOMELESS! Donate it at your church or at a soup kitchen. It will do wonders for happiness and joy. And guess what you will see the next thing happen. You will have so much more to give each time. When you give you recieve pressed down and shaken together 10 fold.

Mmmm. I really like shopping. I particularly like markets. The things there are heartfelt and unique. I like decor, clothes and jewellery because they're a form of self expression for me. However, obviously, this can get out of hand. (Guess why I'm here! Lol! 😬🙊😜) I'm trying to declutter atm. Yes, some things are, "What the hell was I thinking?!" Others I still quite like and I've put some things away so that if I want to redecorate, I'll "shop the box" first. I don't make very extravagant purchases. But a few inexpensive things still adds up to the same as an occasional full priced item. I shop second hand for a lot of things too, which I really love. I realised purchases makes me feel special. 😕🙁 I need to work out how to spend my time on other things to get a sense of fulfillment or accomplishment. Maybe I could start a savings account with the money I *didn't* spend. Or spend my time on a skill or hobby instead? Save for a holiday? Heck, get fit! Anything!! Shopping is also a bit social for me, especially at the markets. It's lovely chatting with people. And I do mostly only buy things I really like and think I'll use. (At least at the time! Lol!) I probably should be saving for a house deposit though. But that's such a far away goal whereas little purchases are a more achievable "reward". Hmmm. I clearly need to work on my mindset. Funny how these habits aren't necessarily so easy to break, when there are various reasons as to why we do them. If anyone has any tips as to how they kicked the habit, I'd appreciate it! I'll have to reflect more on why I do it, and how I could maybe meet those needs in different ways. (Sports can be social. Hmmm... 👍😊) I certainly don't need more stuff! 😳😬 So that's certainly not the reason. Some things to think about... 🤔😋🙏🌈💫

I did a shopping ban in May. Today is the 30th and I hardly bought anything. Planning to continue into June :)

I tried for one month several years ago, as a challenge with my colleague. My life has really changed since then. I made to lists - must have and - nice to have. I wrote every item from which I thought life will be senseless without it :) after the month was over, must have was empty. And all items on the "nice to have" side have lost their attraction. Since then, I do it every year but by now I don't even notice anymore as I stopped thoughtless consumption anyway. Great Video, thanks! Greetings from Germany

I'm on a shopping ban for a long time so I can pay off debt. I don't care to own anymore stuff right now, I have my tv, tv stand, couch, table, I'm actually getting rid of other furniture so I just have the basics.

Leave things in the Amazon basket for a few days … 9 times out of 10 you wondered why you wanted it in the first place!
