  • This is a video adaptation of Bruce Lee's Fighting Method Volume 2 - Basic Training and Volume 1 - Self Defense Techniques. Volume 2's warm up exercise content makes it logical to reverse the order of demonstration on video just as if you were attending a martial art class. The first 33 minutes of the video demonstrate the Basic Training exercises and moves in volume 2. The remainder of the video is the demonstration of moves to defend and counter against attacks as Bruce Lee demonstrated in the Self Defense volume 1.

My father was both a low tier ( scale of one to ten, a 3 or 4) black belt over 25 years ago, and he admired Bruce Lee greatly. Combined with things Bruce did with teachings from the masters my father learned from, our family used to do much of this to stretch and train in self defense. Good times.

Side note, for the sit ups, hold a weight in your hands using your abdomen for support. Never hold a weight against the back of your neck, that just creates unneeded strain that can hurt you.

We must also be honest and keep in mind that he was a real martial artist and then a movie martial artist. You never forget the real heat of battle. He translated it the best he could and then made an art based on the experience that 3 minute challenge.

You don't have to copy a martial art which exist already. Bruce Lee sai that you have to adapt you. He though it was an error to create a martial art so he stopped it. I've got one of his quotes which says it : "Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend."

The meaning of forms or Kuen, the name in chinese, is to see how you can use your techniques. At first you use as an instruction manual, something you practice what you have learned. When you have memorized everything you could use the forms almost as an encyclopedia, to find the hidden moves, who have always been there but not clear from the beginning. This may sound silly, but by doing this your skills will be very good in Kung Fu. Let me ask you something, what do you want?

Just to let anyone know, when I started this in the 80s and 90s, I was able to beat most people sparring / fighting. Nowadays though, you will want to put some grappling with it as this system should always be evolving. This was more like a 70s time capsule so dont judge it that way. Some of it will seem like modern mma training because well, it basically WAS back then.

Hey im 14 years old, i started martial arts when i was 8-9 years old, i know Karate, Judo, Jujitsu, Kempo and im still learning and more of them, if im in a weapon fight (Kenjutsu) ill use 1-2 bamboo sticks or anything else, if no weapons i use just my body natural weapons (arms, legs, head etc) legs are long range, arms are mid range, and knees and elbows are short range, by the time im fighting in short range im already using Jujitsu (grappling), like you said now these days i use jujitsu and Tijutsu the most (jujitsu more) because now people this days who dont know how to fight will just go straight to you running while punching really sloppy (round punches), i can immediately throw a front kick (or side kick) right in their face and they will just fall to the ground, or i use grappling and fight them in the ground and do locks on him or i just trow him the same directing he was heading (like if i was fighting 2-3 people and made myself time to fight less at the same time and other things etc).

I hope u will view/share How Bruce Lee Changed the World on History Channel Doc. It saddens me to read such anger between all of u in your posts & so disrespectful to Lee family. It was Bruce's wisdom & philosophy to teach respect. I am blessed to have Grand Master Sigong Richard Bustillo as my friend & teacher. As you all know Bruce Lee, Dan Inosanto & Richard Bustillo were best friends & trained for 20yrs together. Dan & Richard still teach that same respect today. Blessings to each of you.
