Hi Nate, I have studied JKD with 2 of Sijo Bruce's original students: Dan Inosanto and Patrick Strong. I learned from hard sparring that to enter in with a straight lead and to drop it like you do is to open yourself up to a hard rear cross. The reason Sijo would use this was for demonstration, not for function. Hit hard and fast, and then retract to the start position to cover the line. Old school boxers would train the jab by retracting it and touching their nose with the jabbing hand. You also speak of intercepting with this punch. I would encourage you to have your student take an air shield, hold it flush to his body, charge at you, and using the same straight lead stop him and don't let him get inside of you after you have hit him, but send him back. If your using the right structure you will be able to do this: if your not then he will get in, and collapse your punch every time. I hope this helps man. Keep growing.
+Eric Martin Thank you, I do a similar drill with a falling heavy bag while its swinging. to stop hit and have the right structure. I will try your suggestion too!
Wow. A JKD guy that actually works out Bruce Lee's actual techniques instead of passing off garbage versions of Wing Chun crossed with MMA as JKD. Well done dude.
Thank you for showing real Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. I have been practicing it for more than three decades, but I developed my own style along the way, I'm not so classical . Reminds me so much of our First Master! Your are an inspiration, Keep Up!
Excellent vid! hey man - trained with a lot of pretty good JKD people but you're one of the rare ones who 'get' the little details of it which make the JKD forward hand strike so non-telegraphic and if done right - pretty much unstoppable. The secret is in the hand moving a fraction of a sec ahead of the body.....took me a long time to train that one in.
Ninja Nate: you are by far the best person I saw on You-Tube with regards to showing JKD. I would highlight a few mistakes I am seen. 1: You have the motion down pack. There is a fluid motion that you are using. 2: What I am not seen is the violence behind your movenment. If you are pushing off from your rear leg, violently swing your hip, violently your back. And leting your arm fold. I should see that weight been moved from rear leg through your body to your fist. I am not seen that. 3: You should feel like you are going to be off balance if you don’t control the direction of the weight. 4: Your lower body becomes distorted when you are punching. Your lower body should be a hinge when you are doing the leading punch. 5: Punch through the target. Right now your demo, is your punch is brushing the target. It should be 6 inches behind your target. The JKD punch is like pop locking from break dancing. Without that distrubition of weight, the JKD punch is as weak a boxing jab. Wiith it, it stronger the rear hook from boxing. It is a boxing uppercut that become a jab. 6: I would reflect on my points. You are on your way to becoming a powerful JKD artist. With slight corrections, your punch could equal that of Bruce Lee.
I understand what you're getting at. It's not a perfect demo and their are a few things I may have missed or not performed perfectly. I was concentrating on a few basic things. I like your attention to detail though. I will have more realistic violent intent in my future demos. Really visualize smashing through. Instead of being to relaxed and casual with my demonstration. Mahalo for your advice! Keep blasting!! :)
Ninja Nate No worries. I didn’t want to come across off like a know it all or demening your value. JKD is the most hated martial arts in the world. As long as you are aware those points its all good. I would enjoy seen a demonstration on a punching bag. That way you don’t have to hold back your power. I like to show my students on a punching bag, a regular boxing punching, traditional kung fu punch and then the JKD punch. People only believe what their eyes can see. Stay focus and keep up the hard work. I know it takes years to get to the level you are at. Look forward to more videos from you.
+WARBORN EXPERIENCE Thanks, your comment definitely stood out from the rest, some try to just spout out their own opinions or what is wrong with the technique. Some I agree are more right than others but I don't always reply back to many of them to avoid longer arguments that lead no where. I respected your comment and you approached it very well and I appreciate that. Thank you for understanding and showing respect and tolerance like a martial artist should! I will definitely grow from your advice and suggestions. "Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them." Peace my brother...
Ninja Nate You are welcome it is rare thing to find respect in our world. I been watching your other videos. The points I made, I clearly see you demonstrate in other videos. You are the only person I have seen in the JKD community that uses the legs in their offensive & defensive techniques to bring your body weight from the ground. I am 35 and started JKD when I was 19. My experiences have been in real street fights and unsanticion matches against martial artists. When I was young, I didn’t understand that people hated JKD. That people knowing that you were into martial arts meant some would randomly attack you to prove you a fraud or prove they are tough. I am more conservative with whom knows that I have trained. I would have you ponder some points. JKD is the theory of evoultion in martial arts. We as JKD artist are suppose to be changing and growing. 1: I don’t punch with the bottom 3 of knunckles. I punch with the pointer & middle finger knunckles. They are the stronger points on the hands and you are less likely to break your hand. 2: We are suppose to use the “Intercepting Fist” beating our enemy to the punch. I find that to be dangerous technique. If you and I were to fight, even if you are faster then I am. It would be hard to intercept me. Basic physics would suggest you would have to be twice as fast as I am. Three times or more to have a advantage with your speed. 3: Energy conversion is the heart of JKD. The majority of time I don’t intercept nor block a attack. I evade attack, keeping in striking range. When the person misses, I capitalize on that opening. This techinque “Evading Fist” works against stronger & faster targets. 4: Soon you will reach your physicaly limit and feel like you are not growing. I would suggest learning Tai Chi and developing your Chi. If you can tap into the power of your emotions, your speed and power will suprass your physical power. It is a balance, training the physical and the mental at the same time. At any rate, I enjoyed our conversation.
RPG 808 How about no? If you read all my comments I explain to Nate what my experience was. I don’t feel to explain myself to you. The comments were for him and if he wants to implement them awesome. Nate took it in a positive light like how presented it. I feel a conversation with you will not be constructive. So take care.
Thanks for the videos. You are one of the better JKD artists I have seen on YT. Martial Arts is a journey and while we all need continual practice, I can surely see Bruce Lee in your movements.
This was really good. Not only showing the technique of the move, but also showing common mistakes people could make was really nice. first video of you i have seen, not sure if the other ones follow the same explanatory progression, but this was a really nice video format.
spartnstarcraft2 Thanks. I've been more organized with them. There are similar styles to this video but it is constantly improving so the older ones might not have as clean of a presentation. Thanks for the compliment!
Hey, I subscribed to your channel. I'm glad you're actually TEACHING it with good form versus trying to look like a "boss" like so many tards on RUclips -- I'm here to learn, not check dudes out. So again, thank you, happy for your slow motion and regular speed attacks. Keep up the good work! :-)
I like the punch sequence in the beginning, simple movement and nice force. I am an amateur but I liked the sound that these punches made. Don't know why you looked down though
you can turn the fist over when punching to the body. The vertical fist is only really for moving forward while hitting to the head. Also, throwing the lead while moving backwards, you also turn the fist over.
Hi ninja nate, thanks for these videos, I know you are only doing a demo but remember to punch past the target. Also have you done a video on the hook kick? I'm ok with my hands but struggle to get power when I do the hook kick. Any suggestions
Really like the punch. I espeacially use it to close distance to a taller opponent, intercept a slower attack or to catch someone, when he lets his guard down thinking he is out of range. The only problem i have with it is the follow up. You really get in a sideway position, which makes it hard to follow up with your rear hand without doing an extra step. So usually i step back afterwards. Would be nice to have a video how to keep momentum after initial strike. Also the risk of overturning you rear foot could be mentioned, since it happens easily and takes away some power of the punch and leaves you with some instability. Nice vid though. Thx
Very good clip. Just for the record though, so you can keep improving your teaching techniques, the returning of the punch is referred to as the 'Shortening of the Arc Principle' and it should be applied to all JKD strikes other than a lunging -step finger thrust. Also when your lead straight right is parried and you use the momentum of the shortening of the arc from the first punch to immediately generate a second straight punch that technique is called in JKD "The Redoublement". When done correctly the second punch is actually a 'dropping hammer punch' and not as you are doing another straight lead. The reason for this is that doing just another straight lead punch leaves too much room for the opponent to counter or defend whereas the dropping hammer subtly sends in your rising elbow to the opponent's sternum with the forearm blocking his field of vision just before the hammer punch lands on the opponent's nose. This way of redoubling is far more efficient as it entails the principle of 'Constant Forwards Energy'. I have a clip up fully explaining the Redoublement if you wish to watch it. Keep doing what you are doing. God bless:-)).
+LMA UK I get your point but JKD is a mindset, not a form of martial arts as Bruce lee implies so many times. anything applied as a form is not original and is someone else's use of it, which is still a good use, but Nate is applying his own use and understanding of JKD. Straight lead and hook I thought every punch was thrown as in one blocking motion as you punch, the whole point of jkd is indeception not really full on attack but good job very skilled movements 👍👍👍
I've tried using the straight lead like this and because the body lines up into a side stance it makes following up with a cross or the other side of the body very difficult. Rather the body needs to be a little more squared so you can recover quicker and use both sides as his intends.
Lee deu um tremendo soco no peito do cara e o mandou longe. A plateia fez "ôoooo....", espantada. O locutor perguntou para Bruce porque ele fez aquilo. Ele respondeu: " Não empurro, soco!". Essa era uma pequena amostra do grande Bruce Lee.
I love the chop you did considering my fighting style uses them as its main weapon. I also love the footwork which I will incorporate into my style. I already use my own footwork called cat step where I stand on the balls of feet and slide. I would like your advice. Now for the details: I am a fragile speedster and lack stamina I tend to use slaps, chops and palms the most especially chops I copy the movements of cats I can do a little bit of acrobatics mostly cartwheels My main stance is double cat stance I rely on parries and evasion I can't kick higher than the ribs though I used to be able to kick higher to the head. Most of what I know about martial arts is self taught I can only use simple moves And I'm not that good at fighting though I have gotten better during my two years of self training. Help plz.
Akira Ito hey i was going to refer to you some really basic stuff because you seem like you really will never get true kungfu, to be harsh.. I was going to say use excessive bob and weave because it's excruciatingly effective even for a weak incapable fighter it may still win you the fight.. but umm, if you check this out maybe you'll get the idea that you need to drop everything you've ever thought and start fresh. and take alot of time and study humbly... check: sifu George hajnasr all 27 gates of jkd (to get the hint) then search his other videos to start getting into the basics ok? please if you want to change your entire perspective and life in martial arts. to not miss this opportunity. namaste.
Althgouh Southern Fist Fire Intellect has a very rare usage, it was used popularly in 3,00 movie. But it's effectiveness is unknown in Mahabharata by King Duryodhona in a rigged war (proof Gita.)
christinbichle le Keep training and if you jump up it is easier for them to see you attacking and its slower because of the landing. Why can't you step up though?
Ninja Nate cause i have power behind my punches i can step up it just i am afraid of not hiting the guy so maybe twisting the hips moveing forward with the punch while snap help to step up
Does anyone realize that you could strike with the bottom three knuckles with a horizontal fist and curl it back on a horizontal plane just like the vertical fist eliptical rotates back?
I'm really impressed with your technique. Very fluid
creepytoast23 Thank you!
Omg its liu kang!

your straight lead is awesome bro
Well explained. I was having trouble with the straight lead. This helped.
Best JKD in motion, I've seen so far.
You do an excellent job of explaining this technique. Thank you for posting this.
I love the acting of the guy in the red Shirt :D!!
Nice work on the straight lead. Well done, demonstrated and patiently taught.

Thanks for the videos. You are one of the better JKD artists I have seen on YT.

Reminds me of fencing. Very cool!
Great video. Very detailed and didactical.
Iuri Korolev Thanks You!
nice clean movements
One of the best fighters I've seen. Going to take JKD after I'm done with some other fighting style(s)
Julian Fan he doesn't fight
This was really good. Not only showing the technique of the move, but also showing common mistakes people could make was really nice. first video of you i have seen, not sure if the other ones follow the same explanatory progression, but this was a really nice video format.

Great Vid, Bro.
Best video I know this trick
very nice
Great video!
***** thanks!
i am impressed so much that i really want to meet you and learn jkd...
blind leading the blind..enjoy being knocked out newbie.
btw research dropped guard..counterpunch.
my gift to you
Thank for this video it's was good
Sifu Joel Ledlow taught me this. Good instructions. Always stay loosed throughout entire body. No tenacity
I actually somewhat profected it and add some new moves. Thank you. Good Job By the Way :-)
Abdullah Alzughaier Awesome!! and thanks!
Ninja Nate Your Welcome.I'm going start learning more from you man :-)
So that's where Bruce Lee's fencing training comes into play.
I like the punch sequence in the beginning, simple movement and nice force. I am an amateur but I liked the sound that these punches made. Don't know why you looked down though
i love this song
you can turn the fist over when punching to the body.
Bruce Lee said Jeet Kun Do was an evolving art. Each individual should find what fits him and make the best out of JKD.
Nice video, very cool and easy to train.
Leandro Rosa Thanks glad to have helped
I see the Win Chun influences in JKD here
Nice..🤗
Really like the punch. I espeacially use it to close distance to a taller opponent, intercept a slower attack or to catch someone, when he lets his guard down thinking he is out of range. The only problem i have with it is the follow up. You really get in a sideway position, which makes it hard to follow up with your rear hand without doing an extra step. So usually i step back afterwards. Would be nice to have a video how to keep momentum after initial strike. Also the risk of overturning you rear foot could be mentioned, since it happens easily and takes away some power of the punch and leaves you with some instability. Nice vid though. Thx
Ninja Nate your awesome man.
Robert DePlonty Thank you Robert!
You are fast
Nathan, do you lift? You're physique looks good compared to your old videos.
Recently I find something that Really created a none telegraphic way of fighting
@@aquiredskill what it is
What do you do full time Nate if you don't mind me asking? Do you teach full time cuz it's clear to see you're very professional.

+Ninja Nate Will you ever put up exercise videos?
Cannot be taught as an art just techniques of an individual and then its up to you what concepts you want to take from it 👍👍👍
Your JKD is so simple, your way of teaching is awesome. Who did you learn from?
Kool.
Me encantó, soy fans de Bruce Lee el único y más grande y maestro de los maestro
What do you sir recommend me to do :)
Legal,poderia ter legenda
What fightstyle do you sir use often :)
El mejor
Awesome techniques though
JKD is enjoyable
Wow...
#nice
This is the push step, not to shuffle step.
Best regards.

Your Welcome
ive been very interested in learning jkd as my first martial art the only issue is there isnt anyone that teaches it near me in michigan which is a real bummer
This is also great.n also please teach us all kinds of jeetkando.n Sir can u teach us bruce lee type nunchaku slowly.?
+ninja nate:master ,watch all the vídeos of jeet kwon do class, please continue to teach US more about it
When your next video?!!
Straight lead and hook I thought every punch was thrown as in one blocking motion as you punch, the whole point of jkd is indeception not really full on attack but good job very skilled movements 👍👍👍
What level of JKD have you got and will you be doing more JKD videos
This is literally a regular jab in boxing but in boxing and real JKD we keep our hands up
Extra credit to the partner for acting out all the "getting hit" scenes
like Bruce lee. dude your awesome
Does the straight lead come from the center like the wing chun punch?
Like fencing
I'm a 12th degree pink belt Grandmaster in jeet kune do, this is impressive
I've tried using the straight lead like this and because the body lines up into a side stance it makes following up with a cross or the other side of the body very difficult. Rather the body needs to be a little more squared so you can recover quicker and use both sides as his intends.
Elias Noel I think this punch is meant to be used near the end or beginning of a combo so you can move back and follow up with something else
Put up more nunchuck tutorials there amazing.
Josh Berlin I'm uploading them soon! Stay on the lookout! :)

I love the chop you did considering my fighting style uses them as its main weapon. I also love the footwork which I will incorporate into my style. I already use my own footwork called cat step where I stand on the balls of feet and slide. I would like your advice. Now for the details:
I am a fragile speedster and lack stamina
I tend to use slaps, chops and palms the most especially chops
I copy the movements of cats
I can do a little bit of acrobatics mostly cartwheels
My main stance is double cat stance
I rely on parries and evasion
I can't kick higher than the ribs though I used to be able to kick higher to the head.
Most of what I know about martial arts is self taught
I can only use simple moves
And I'm not that good at fighting though I have gotten better during my two years of self training.
Help plz.
Akira Ito hey i was going to refer to you some really basic stuff because you seem like you really will never get true kungfu, to be harsh.. I was going to say use excessive bob and weave because it's excruciatingly effective even for a weak incapable fighter it may still win you the fight..
but umm, if you check this out maybe you'll get the idea that you need to drop everything you've ever thought and start fresh. and take alot of time and study humbly...
check: sifu George hajnasr all 27 gates of jkd (to get the hint) then search his other videos to start getting into the basics ok? please if you want to change your entire perspective and life in martial arts. to not miss this opportunity.
namaste.
hows it going
he thinking a bruce lee my man
You are like Bruce Lee(respect)
Althgouh Southern Fist Fire Intellect has a very rare usage, it was used popularly in 3,00 movie. But it's effectiveness is unknown in Mahabharata by King Duryodhona in a rigged war (proof Gita.)
Can I do it with my left foot
Why @5:12 are you hitting with the top knuckles and not the bottom with the wrist tilted up as you initially describe the move?
If I may ask: what moves first: hand or body? Or do they start simultaneously?
All the best M
There is wisdom in watching the whole video before asking a question LOL. Your clip is indeed most complete. Thank you very much
thank ninja nate i am really slow at this but i try to jump into my punch cause i cant step up
christinbichle le Keep training and if you jump up it is easier for them to see you attacking and its slower because of the landing. Why can't you step up though?
Ninja Nate cause i have power behind my punches i can step up it just i am afraid of not hiting the guy so maybe twisting the hips moveing forward with the punch while snap help to step up
Super i practice jet Kune do 😅
Does anyone realize that you could strike with the bottom three knuckles with a horizontal fist and curl it back on a horizontal plane just like the vertical fist eliptical rotates back?
