I didn’t realize Spice Girls were songwriters on their albums for so long because of all the men who would just go on TV and say they weren’t.
Crazy how the media can control the narrative like that.
The magic of the Spice Girls can never be recreated or duplicated. They captured the essence of an era and while a lot of people didn't take them seriously, they were more powerful and impactful than anyone can imagine.
As a life long Spice fan - age 11 through current age of 37- this is definitely one of the best documentaries and one I’d definitely recommend to anyone wanting to revisit the era or interested in the nostalgia of Spice. And Editing on point! Loved your story delvelopment with notes to “pin” this fact for later”. Well constructed!! You got my sub! 💯 ✌🏼☮️

I didn’t grow up w the spice girls but their cultural significance is undeniable. Becoming the best selling girl group in such a short amount of time is iconic within itself. My favorite thing about the group has always been the distinct different looks and personalities. I always prefer this (similar to tlc) than groups who have the supreme effect w just one artist as the main focus. Love the fun, friendship and empowerment aspects they promote most of all 🥹

I still listen to the spice girls now as if they’re current. Their music is timeless, which is why they’re is such a huge demand for more reunions and new music to this day
We wanted female role models who were not ‘heroin chic’ and these girls came along and told us we can be who we are
I do think they've paved the way for Hanson, the Backstreet boys, N' Sync, Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera to have success, especially in America. Teen Pop became big again in 1997 thanks to them.
100%. Teen pop, and hell even pop music in general, was almost non-existent on the US charts at the time that the Spice Girls took off. If you look at the charts at the time, it was full of hip-hop, rock, R&B, and even house, but very little pop music was crossing over at the time. Then "Wannabe" takes off and you start seeing huge pop hits like MMMBop, Backstreet's Back, Barbie Girl, Tearin' Up My Heart, etc. and the whole landscape changes. They paved the way for practically an entire genre to make a huge return to the charts after years of dormancy, and who's to say if the Britney Spears phenomenon would've happened without them. They really do not get their dues for having a legitimately huge impact on the music industry. Hopefully they get their recognition someday
The supremes, the Osmonds, the Jackson 5, the archies, the beatles 50's and the 60's and 70's New edition, New kids the 80s. Bubble pop has always gone in and out of fashion.
I have loved the Spice Girls since they came out, and have followed their career. You did a great job, and did their legacy justice. So many people write them off as a manufactured group, but I always say they were actually womanfactured. They knew what they wanted and they went out and got it, and empowered a whole generation to do the same. Well done x

Spice World the movie is such an underrated camp classic, I still rewatch it every few years
Its unfortunate that its not available to stream or even buy anywhere. You have to have a physical copy in most cases.

I think someone said it in a how girl power changed britain: it took five women to make one woman's voice heard. The positive impact the spice girls have had changed the world for the better, no matter how much many men and some women tried to put them down.

They had the same type of Mega impact.
I haven’t seen any obsessive worldwide mania over any other music band since them.
I hate when people put them in the pop bubblegum category.
They made such good smart classic pop songs with urban flavor.
Especially the ‘Spice’ album.
Songs like ‘Something Kinda Funny’ and ‘If U Can’t Dance’ are so underrated.
They have that perfect combination of 90’s pop and hiphop beat that still sounds fresh today.

Just wow, I can't even imagine the amount of time and work that went into making this. As a life long spice girls fan this doc brought me so much joy, and is probably one of the best biopic pieces I've seen on the Spice Girls. The hard work and love you put into making this is evident. Seriously, kudos and thank you for making this series.

I was 13 in 1997 when the Spice Girls hit the US, I will never forget seeing the mv for 'Wannabe'. Immediate obsession - I begged my parents relentlessly and nearly cried every time I saw the video/heard the song because I wanted the album so badly. I'll never forget when they finally bought me the tape, and even let me listen to it in the car on the way home. Every song was amazing, and there was a decent amount of variety within the album. I still remember the album artwork, which for anyone who remembers tapes will surely remember that album artwork for cassettes just wasn't in the best format (especially compared to records or CDs) - still I loved it, the girls were so beautiful and their style was iconic even at the time.
This obsession lasted the duration of Jr. High for me, I bought and loved Spiceworld the album and Spice World the movie. I remember anyone who was a fan always 'was' one of the Spice Girls in their friend group or even just individually; I was always Baby Spice and was obsessed with platform boots and baby doll dresses. I even wore my hair in the half part mini pigtails - of course including the most obnoxious little-kid ponytail holders. I remember being the driving force behind the creation of a coordinated dance routine to 'Spice Up Your Life' amongst all of my friends, and practicing it for hours during any slumber party or visit to a friend's house. I even practiced English slang because I would buy any magazine that featured the Spice Girls, and once found an article that listed a bunch of English slang and what each word meant. I felt SO cool in my tiny town of 2,000 people.
Like you said, it was definitely a moment in pop culture that 'you just had to be there' to really fully grasp just how huge they truly were. The Girl Power message was powerful, and the consistent theme in all of their songs: female unity, strength and support that didn't require the approval of males, was unique and presented in a way that was fun and accessible.

This triggered a memory of grade 2. I "auditioned" for the spice girls group in my grade. I was rejected because i panicked and just repeated the same move several times. I cried on the side of the playground 😂

Wow I'm having memories too! I remember taking my portable radio in the backyard and creating choreographies to the Spice Girls with my best friend. Everyone wanted to be Baby Spice 😂 but my friend was blonder than me, so I let her have Baby and I was Sporty Spice! It's such a different world now!
the spice girls are brilliant. They've managed to be around from 96-98 and have such a profound legacy within pop culture.
Didn't grow up with them but i feel like their charisma and personality + good music is what made them so popular so fast. From all the interviews ive watched of them..

From where I see it, Geri leaving when she did, saved the group's legacy. They left the fans wanting more instead of tired of the over exposure. The generations that follow, were/are curious.
And on their own, they are still around, doing their thing. It's really fascinating.

I am so sad that we will never have a girl group so polarizing while being themselves! They were amazing women and I love them so much! I was a fan when I was 8 or 9..YEARS too late but I hope their impact will forever last!
Loved this. Thank for posting this video. Spice Girls were amazing. My daughter is 9yrs old and she even loves their songs today. I was so happy to see Mel B. and Emma on The Circle on Netflix. They are everything and just seem so down to earth.

Excellent video, it brought back so many memories and nostalgia. I remember being in small town New Zealand in 1998 and my mum coming into my bedroom to break it to 7 year old me that Geri had left the Spice Girls. I wept on my bed underneath the massive Spice Girls poster asking "why why why" to it for an hour or so. I have better priorities now.

My 10 year old self was a massive superfan of the spice girls 🎊 and because they was English and Iam and Mel-B being a women of colour I felt like they was soo relatable.This docu was amazing to watch especially the footage and adverts...soo much nostalgia for my 37 years young self who still has the spice album I brought and still listens to there songs today👍💜 I was lucky enough to see the girls backstage for rehearsals for 2012 Olympics. They seemed soo sweet🤎

Spice Girls were and forever will be iconic. Within 2 years they achieved the success a lot of bands can only dream about. I loved them being everywhere. That’s not greedy - that’s squeezing your 5 minutes of fame to the max. I hope they will record another album. Even without Victoria.

firing Simon was the first huge Mistake. Geri Leaving was the icing on the cake. But they still had the ability to sell out Stadiums for years to come
I disagree. Simon was running them into the ground with an exhausting schedule and dividing them. Getting rid of him brought them closer together again.
@@samvilamarim2478 Simon had a plan though.. they would’ve gotten a slight break after the tour and an extended break after the 3rd album. He was only trying to make sure they solicited their position and set a lot of things in stone. If they would’ve just stuck it out they would’ve had all the breaks they could ever want and an even longer legacy, even though their current legacy isn’t too shabby, but they definitely had another 2/3 solid albums in them. Everyone just needed to be on the same page.

Did anybody notice the guy that was complaining about the music industry being boy band oriented notice how he said when he was describing what he wanted in the group “nice white girls” and the other one said english.
To me, these girls will always be the gold standard to forming large girl groups. Each girl was an individual, with their own distinct voice, style, and personality, yet gelled together and harmonised very well. Each girl was a pillar and that is why it was not functional for the girls to go on after members left. No body else could be a spice girl. The opposite to groups like Fifth Harmony where you really couldn't tell one girl apart from the other, each looking interchangeable and replaceable.

Great video, loved the archive videos that you just let play. I also didn’t know they wrote their songs. In the late 90s, my friends and I would dance to the Spice Girls and film ourselves. We all our roles, some more fitting than others haha. I was baby spice just cause I was the blonde one of the group!

I am a lifelong fan of the Spice girls since day one when I was 11 years old. For a girl coming from a small country outside the UK and US they were living goddesses - have collected all the memorablia I could put my hands on and have kept it to this day still (switching houses four times since I started). One of the highlights of my life so far is finally seeing them live in 2019 at Wembley - I just couldn’t believe it was actually happening.
To me those five forces of nature were, are and will forever be legends!

I feel like if they had a 1999 album as a sonic bridge from the poppier albums to R&B, Forever probably would’ve gone down a bit better. Think Spice but with a bit more edge.

I love this, what a time! Lots of my friends who were too cool for the spice girls kinda jumped on board when baby started doing absolutely fabulous. The bindi wearing in a night out, the freedom, the 90s were fantastic and these girls made the time

I have to add a point to your thorough analysis no-one seems to point out: They have a very limited song catalog.
Realistically speaking they only have their first two albums to go back to whenever they reunite, and out of those, they can only focus on singles and some additional well-known songs.
It is not enough to carry an on-going need for them other than nostalgia. Fans will always be there, yes, but there's only so much juice they can squeeze out if they want to reunite over and over.
Excellent point. You’re right! But it then begs the question as to why they haven’t made new music to perform alongside the hits.
Without going into too much detail (in order to preserve future videos) I think there’s more behind the scenes that the fans aren’t privy to. I think there’s still “bad blood” that prevents them from really getting back together.

A family member had recorded one of their concerts onto a VHS tape for me... I cannot tell you how many times I played that tape while having moved the coffee table out of the way, laying a blanket down for my stage and putting on a performance alongside the girls. I can't believe they were around for such little time. It felt like 5+ years'

Absolutely wonderful piece you have done here as a 40 YO super fan from day 1 who has read & watched hundred of pieces on the group, this was a very solid documentary! P.S - A small correction, it was “Love Thing” the label tried to fight for as the debut single over Wannabe, not Say You’ll Be There.
Thank you so much! Also, I don’t doubt that “Love Thing” was preferred as well but in the liner notes for the 25th anniversary edition of the SPICE album (Apple Music version), Mel C gave commentary for each track and said that there were execs that wanted “Say You’ll Be There” as the first single.

I think Geri’s departure was a blessing in disguise for their career. They were on the top of their career and wanting their fans to see more up to now. It never gets bored.
It felt like they've been doing it for decades. I was in elementary school then and I was saddened by the news.
as kids it was exciting seeing them everywhere- way before we had the internet in our homes- i dunno i was never a super fan or whatever but they certainly captured the 90s experience. some of those songs were great and spice world video is amazing, real fifth element vibes

They are iconic and I have enjoyed watching them grow up and become successful!
They stood for friendship and comradery among women! In a world where women competed with each other for men and a seat at the board room table.
They are the blue print of modern day music girl groups. They revived and reinvented the girl group aesthetic and attitude from the classic girl group image of olden days like The Supremes.
Each has their own distinct look and personality so that opens up more fans to listening to their music.
I had to subscribe, but I'm turning 33 and have been a fan of them since I was 7. Thinking about all the times I've blasted their music, watch their videos and Spice World, and the times where my friends and I would play Spice Girls, I always got to play Scary Spice (she's my favorite) just makes me emotional. They made me believe that I could do/be anything I wanted as a little girl, and my biggest regret is not seeing them on their reunion tour. If one day they tour again, I'm going. I just wish I could thank them for all they have done for me, and how important they were to me when I was little

So so thankful I saw them as a 5 piece during their 2007/8 tour 🙏🙏🙏 I was devastated as a teen when I couldn’t get tickets on their first world tour, but by the time they got to The US / Canada, Geri had already left. 😂 Enjoyed every minute of this video, thanks for taking us back💛There was a lot of footage that I had never seen before, like where they were doing a bedroom tour in their old house. The Box was a video jukebox a phone in channel, you paid £1 to phone in and dial a number to choose a video, the video selection numbers scrolled across the bottom of the screen the whole time and you had to wait for your song to come up so you could get the selection number 😅 those were the days!

I was basically a huge fan of them from roughly 1997 to 1999. Ginger was my favorite. In my region of the US, they weren't as super popular and were actually despised a bit. I live in a very conservative, Bible Belt part of VA so basically when I was in middle and high school, loads of people would slut shame all the young women and any "sexy" celebrity they saw in the media.
It’s always really interesting to hear how different people feel about big stars. Kinda like a reality check.
I was only 10-11 during the peak of Spicemania, but even as an adult I don't feel like the Spice Girls--despite their sometimes naughty/provocative lyrics and revealing outfits--were ever really "sexualized". Certainly nowhere near the way that singers like Britney or Christina were a few years later. There was a silliness to the Spice Girls that took that edge off them. They were styled like and marketed like cartoon characters.

My understanding was yes Mel B & Geri the headstrong opinionated extroverts, but that it was Emma and Victoria who were the pair of quiet, easygoing non-confrontational types and Mel C was the floater going back and forth and always keeping the peace
You would think so…Victoria said that she and Mel C were the “bookends” and that Emma could surprisingly stand between Mel B and Geri.

Spice Mania was a beautiful thing to be a part of. It’s like I tell my nieces and nephews all the time…. You just had to be there to really understand the gravity of spice mania sweeping the world. Literally anything you could sell, they sold it 😂 the sad thing is that their marketing and commercialism started to outshine music which was and still is amazing and so far ahead of any artist that was out at the time. Timeless bop after timeless bop!
Their fans are now in their late 20s to 40s. They are still beloved. x

Loved em when I was 8 yrs old ..I'm 34 now n still love them just as much ...me n my bestfriend when we were lil girls would dress up as spice girls and put on lil shows for my sisters n cousins lol ...we would get my gramma to but us a disposable camera and dress up n try to copy their poses n do photo shoots lmao..die hard fans ...had the dolls the t shirts the stickers outta the gums n lollipops ...we once got in so much trouble for drawing a huge mural of the spice girls on my childhood best friends bdrm wall ...floor to ceiling big mural ....lol...they were and are great role models to spread the word of bein a strong woman and build friendships with other females ...they are the poster faces for "GIRL POWER" that's for sure

They were like British version of K-pop idols. Back then I don't think there was K-pop at all. But I see similarities, girl group, all of them beautiful with separate personalities, dance, sing, a lot of commercials, and I mean a lot, flashy clothes, super fame...
Kpop as we know it today started taking form in the early 1990s, but pop music had been a thing in Korea for years already. At the end of 90s, Kpop was a well established genre with groups such as H.O.T, S.E.S, Fin.K.L, Baby V.O.X, Sechskies, etc.

I had no idea All Saints said that, my fam loved both groups. Comes across as tres bitter from all saints - i was really young at the time so I missed all this. I was just obsessed in my orange spice girl top and white pedal pusher leggings! LOL Still love the spice girls, cried when they broke up. Hated Geri because i thought it was her fault hahaha. Never seen them live because it always sells out.
I always feel like in that time pop wasn't given the respect it deserved. And ppl wonder why kpop is so popular - some of us genuinely enjoy an ear worm chrous and major chords. The west is obsessed with doing pop thats subverted in some way, like billie eilish is cool but where are the Britneys?

Me - who was 10/11 years old when they came out and was absolutely obsessed with them, STILL not bored of them at the age of 35!

As an adult I can see the flaws. But I still have a TON of nostalgia for the Spice Girls. They were a part of my life at a very formative, critical moment and I'll always love and appreciate them for that.

I am so mad I got ride of most of my Spice Girls merch. My friends and I were obsessed with the Spice Girls growing up, and among our friend group we had almost everything that was spread out on that table. The one I remembered fondly was the Spice girl lollipops. They came with stickers to collect, and my friends and I would buy so many of them just to complete the whole series.
They had so many products! I bet it all goes for a lot on eBay.
