My sister was 43 when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. She is and was thin then, exercised a few times weekly and still does, and has always eaten very healthy. She had a lumpectomy followed by radiation and chemo. We have absolutely no family history of breast cancer nor genetic factors ( no BRCA genes). She was working with paints ( professional artist ) that contained a chemical ( benzene ) she was not aware of that was highly suspect as the cause of the cancer, according to her oncologist surgeon. She immediately switched to water based paints. Thanks to God she has been cancer free since the surgery and treatments and is 70 years old now.

According to this data, every woman in the MidWest should ultimately get diagnosed with breast cancer.

Interesting research. I wonder if BMI is less of a factor than weight gain- ie. if someone had a low BMI but then put on 10-15% of their body weight being more at risk than someone who was overweight all their lives. My thinking is that their organs may not be used to processing all that comes with that extra weight, even if the person is still just at the high end of a healthy BMI or slightly overweight.

I have the lowest BMI of any of my friends. I exercise, they don’t. I eat healthy, they don’t. I have breast cancer. And they do not have breast cancer. So …. Calling BS in your findings doc. I know non-fat men like to see fat women as diseased because it eases their guilt in not being attracted to them, but it isn’t that easy boys. Sorry.

You’re right! Cancer doesn’t discriminate. I was a radiation therapist and gave cancer patients their radiation treatments. I treated people who were super healthy and fit and they got cancer. Treated the spouse of a smoker with lung cancer. Crazy right? The person who smokes actually has a filter, I’ve treated many where the spouse gets lung cancer from second hand smoke. Also, as someone who used to treat cancer patients, I got breast cancer with no family history. I also have family members who are alcoholics, smokers and obese and none of them have cancer. It is BS sometimes.
