Have you done plumbing work? I just put a bathtub in and it's not as easy as they show on even YT videos. It requires some finesse and experience in trial and error to get it right and to do it right. So imagine doing this every day and trying to make time and money. I can see it being a real challenge and requiring skill.
If plumbers weren't so expensive homeowners would not try to do it themselves as much. Not saying they shouldn't be paid well buy it's a factor for sure as a lie income home owner. I usually find myself going without, resorting to helper/handymen or doing it myself. Thank goodness for RUclips.!
This little ruclips.net/user/postUgkxVoi3B4CB6Oygq1-vo4OTL1M_M5JkrXif tub works perfect in our 6 x 6 shower and is easy to get in and out. Also easy to drain.
You are my new hero! Thank you for a great video..I’m a single mom with 5 adopted kids on a tight budget. I have been dealing with a leaky tub for 4 weeks..replacing the spout..then the shower head..checking the shower arm..and NOW I think you’ve helped me finally solve the last leaky issue..that pesky gasket! Bravo to you and thank you for your military service and keeping us safe. You rock mister! -mary
I am so glad I found your video. We had a plumber come out to assess the leak and he said that it could not not be the overflow drain. Same with the contractor (now fired for other reasons) who put the tub in. No one will care more for your home than yourself. These videos are invaluable. Thank you again.
I’m so glad this helped you. There are times it is nice to have another perspective on things. I always try to look at it from different angles. Hope we can help again.
That's not how we think about it in the UK. Plumbers here tend to treat every job they do as their own home, because they expect to be coming back to it year after year, and don't want to have problems when they do come back to it. Your comment slides towards branding all plumbers and contractors as idiots and not knowing any more than your average DIYer, which simply isn't true. Also, plumbing isn't always as simple and straight forward as youtube videos portray them to be. Especially when you've got decades of different types of pipes and fittings that have been constantly changed and altered by multiple different people with different levels of training. Houses built before the 1980s in the UK are a nightmare for plumbers if they've never had proper work done on them before 😅
Thank you so much for this!! I discovered a leak by seeing water damage in the trim of a closet behind a shower. I could not figure out the issue, but I resealed grout lines, added caulk around the faucets, etc... but it didn't fix the problem. Then the overflow cover fell off and I saw the gap between the pipes and tub. There was no retainer on it nor was there was there a gasket. So all the water just fell around the pipe. I honestly don't think any water has actually flowed through the pipe itself. Your video helped me fix the problem. Thank you so much!!!! Now I have to figure out how to fix the water damage.
The wedge-shaped thickness of the gasket is to compensate for the slope of the bathtub endwall. Not to make the gasket "extra tight" at the bottom, just equal tight all around :-). Apart from this little linguistic detail I'd say the video was just about perfect. Great job. Thank you.
Good catch. But all tubs and drain pipes are far from the same. As mentioned. Some tubs have a slant to the tub wall the drain is on, but have a flush 90 degree to drain overflow gasket surface. The wedge shaped gasket is used by that combo as well. Price fista uses a thick gasket in there kits from the 80s. Tub wall has a out-dent to true up the tub to the seal/gasket flange, so it uses a flat gasket, but its not thin, like what most retailers carry. The plumbing being brass and copper does not accept using a thin gasket because the overflow tube has to bend/tilt to meet the tub. Ordered the almost 1/4" thick gasket that belongs there. Another thing to remember is that the back of the tub is not glazed like the inside. Rust in the overflow hole indicates that the back of the tub may be rusted badly. Attention to this may help when accessing a job that fails. Take it apart methodically, noticing the relation of the parts. Some tubs have a slanted drain surface, and a slanted overflow gasket surface. Again needing a flat gasket. Some silicone on a rusty tub back, after using something to chip away rust flakes may help as well. GL all.
You saved my ass today 😂😂 I created a leak because I hopped in and thought I knew what I was doing with switching out my pop up drain on my tub. What I didn’t realize is that I did not seal my overflow plate back properly after my messing around made everything loose. Thank you for making such straightforward and informative videos!
I’m so glad I found this video! We discovered our tub had a leak years ago, but only when taking a bath. I have just abstained from taking them because I’m not really a bath person. I decided it’s been enough time and feel silly about how easy this is to fix! I opened the cover and discovered that my gasket was super old and found only half of it. The portion I could remove just crumbled into pieces. Also the previous owners tried to unclog the drain at some point and left a snake in there… we’ve lived here for 5 years so WHO KNOWS how long that has been there. What the heck! Thanks again for your helpful videos.
Been having a small leak in the basement for a bout a week. I found this exact setup and situation. Gasket on the tub side, moved it over the pvc lip on the backside tighten clip from the tub side! Leak gone immediately, thanks for the video!
Thank you sooo much! I'm the weird renter who likes to fix things myself. I've had too many jobs not done correctly by self proclaimed (cheap) handy men hired by cheap landlords. This video explained the problem and how to fix it clearly. Side note: the overflow cover fell off while my grandson was in the tub and I discovered it was held on (glued) by caulk that someone applied around the overflow gasket to try to fix the leak. Ugh!!
Hi Kathy, Any idea what the name of that half moon retainer clip at 2:40 is called? Mine rotted and I have to change it, assuming you found a solution, maybe you could Help point me in the right direction. Haven’t had luck looking for that piece
Thanks! Changed mine last week but didn’t know what the old retainer clip was so didn’t put it back. Didn’t leak at first but now it is. Going back to fix thanks to you!
Thank you for this video! I had no gasket whatsoever. No wonder my tub was leaking into the downstairs! It was not easy to get the gasket fitted but I did it all thanks to you
Great video! Undiscovered water leakage/stains on the garage ceiling below my daughter's bathtub and last bath she took the water actually broke through the drywall tape area. At first I thought she may have been getting too much water outside the tub but I think I need to look into this while I'm waiting forever for my home warranty company to get a reliable plumber out here. My worry is mold building up in the sun floor but hopefully not cause the garage is below it and hopefully it is dry.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I had a leak from the overflow and it was exactly the situation you describe here and fixing it was very easy thanks to you!
Thanks for this video. This will really help me in a few days. I have the same issue as your neighbour. Leaking overflow that was causing water to come through the ceiling on the floor below! I removed the overflow plate and found that there was a bunch of dried-out plumbers putty inside (???) that came crumbling out as soon as the plate was off. As well as a gasket that was severely deteriorated and not even installed correctly around the drain pipe. Huge gaps everywhere. No freaking wonder water was coming through the ceiling. Getting a replacement gasket right away and going to get fix this properly. Can't believe someone installed it like this!
$3,000 bill to fix downstairs drywall, repair my toilet, and seal a bunch of crappy gaps where my fixtures weren't installed right. Stopped the worst of the leak. I mentioned that I thought I heard dripping when the tub was very full, suggested they peek at the overflow, plumber said no that's probably not the issue. I went to take a bath a few days later and my downstairs neighbor immediately messaged me on Whatsapp saying he heard another leak. I'd be willing to bet money it's the overflow, and now I know how to fix it. THANK YOU!
Good video. Having similar issues but tub on second floor. Had water leaking down into kitchen after using the tub. I can do all of things mentioned but no way to test. No opening from below to check if the leak has stopped. Any suggestion? Thanks.
@@ThatFixItGuy Good Copy. Repair is done. Haven’t tested outcome yet. Only other option was to break away an area to gain access. Figured try this first
Funny I asked a plumber and he didn't look at gasket, clip, and just took "guts" out and said if it leaks just "turn this around" to tighten to fix. No fix and goggled this and made perfect sense! Thank you
BlueVue Overflow Gasket was the best $28 I ever spent. Cheap traditional gaskets disintegrated at 10 years and again 10 years later. Both times ruined my ceiling. And I have NO connection to BlueVue.
My overflow is just a nut and I see it was loose that was allowing water to leak into the ceiling. Can I use plumbers putty around that nut when I tighten it to create a better seal? I don’t have the bracket or anything in this video but I’m sure now based on this video the nut needs to be sealed better against the tub. Thanks again for these helpful tips!
Yep you could totally use some plumbers putty or silicone/caulk. So many different styles out there. A lot of times it is just the plate screwing into the pipe with the gasket in the middle. Glad this could help. Hope we can help again.
Wouldn't his house have to be checked for mold and hidden water damage after such a leak? I thought the tub would need to be removed to check for water damage and mold, in addition to the repair that you made. Thanks for the video, your instructions are very clear.
Not Necessarily. The ceiling was open in the basement already. I don't know how long it had been like that. A lot of people may opt to spray a little bleach water and run a fan for some days then do all that work that is way more expensive. Thank you
Wow I learned something about the the retainer clip. I'm heading to the bathroom that has caused myself and former owner to have it rain in the kitchen floor for years. I'm betting this could be the issue.
I looked behind my tub and saw that the gasket had deteriorated and was happy to find this video. But then when I opened the plate, the drain was maybe caulked on/cemented on. From the front side, it doesn’t appear that it would leak but when looking from the back, I am concerned. Any tips? I will be filling my tub soon to check for leaks.
So with a new seal it should not need to be puttied or siliconed in place, but the pipe may not be completely correct or something so they caulked it in place. If you are going to replace the gasket I would put it in properly and try it first without having to silicone or caulk it.
I agree with others who gave you kudos for this video. We had a plumbing company come over yesterday after we had a leak . They said it was from the overflow drain from our spa tub. The guy filled the tub to test the jets but didn't replace the gasket or even suggest it. All he said was that we weren't supposed to fill the tub that much!! Ughh. Looks like we might have to do it ourselves. We have a cover that has a K on it as in this video but it's without a screw. Can you tell me how to remove it please?
Well done. May I ask how you would remove the two plate mounting screws if they're so corroded with hard water buildup that they won't unscrew with a manual screwdriver? Thanks
Hi thank you for your video! I might check the upstair bath tub. Yesterday, I found the water leaking on the ceiling after I used the upstair bathroom. We had that issue when our A/C or water heater was not working properly. Should it be same problem?
That seems like it would be different issues. Did you notice the water after a shower or bath or was in when the toilet was flushed? Sometimes you have to open the ceiling to know what is going on. Is it an active leak?
Excited to see if this fixes my problem....but instead of leaking my tub is holding water with a super slow drain. When I push that pipe away from hole the water quickly releases as should (note, I completely detached the plug weight). It's missing that semi circle thing and if it has the gasket it feels very hard.
I just replaced ours not because it was leaking but the plastic ring that the metal cover snaps on was broken. (It’s a newer bathtub) I replaced the plastic ring and it works fine. My question is do I need to caulk the metal cover to keep water from seeping in?
Good morning I stumbled across this video during a google search , I think this is exactly what’s happening with my leak. How much would you say this repair costs ?
And if the piping is not in good shape? Or the pipe was out of place ? (When the plumber when to use the snake, the pipe wasn’t visible) What’s the cost like ?
Hi, Thanks for your video! May I ask for your expert adivce? I live in an apt and recently there was leak from my unit to downstair neighbor. We've found out water leaking from the point where the pipe connects my bathtub overflow hole (right behinde the overflow cover plate) So simply, If water goes through the hole, it leads to waterleak. the maintenace has warned me not putting water through the hole or it will be my responsibility for next damage. Is it normal that water going through the hole would be leaked? I just feel its not right.. please help me.
Do you know how to room the water that has leaked through this overflow and now is literally under the tub. You can stand on it and hear the water. Thanks. Great video.
@@ThatFixItGuy I meant, do you know how to remove the water from underneath the tub? There is a possibility that someone put a tub over the old cast iron porcelain tub? Won't know until we remove the ceiling in the garage under the tub area.
Easy fix just put a 3rd tub on top of that one. Should not be able to feel it then. Lol. I’m kidding. Ok now I understand. I wish you lived near me so I could check this out. I have always wondered about bathfitter type tub over lays. If you take the overflow cover off can you see the other tub? Is there a gap that you can see. You may be able to reduce a shop vac hose size down to 3/8 tubing flatten it and slide it down in there to get some out. Such a weird situation. I think some of that ceiling will come out to see what is going on.
@@ThatFixItGuy Ok an update for you. Love the humor, keep it coming. We took off the overflow cover and the drain out. It appears that whoever did the bath fit, installed a liner under it. So what happens is if the overflow or the drain leaks, the water goes in between the liner and the fitted tub. I guess so it doesn't leak through the floor into the garage. However, the overflow was not sealed or installed correctly. So there was the problem. Once we took out both the overflow and the drain out, we stood on the tub and pushed out as much of the water as we could. Put a fan in there for a few days to dry out. Hopefully. I like your idea of reducing a vac hose to try that as well. Good McGyver idea. Thanks.
Have one where it rusted away to an imperfect seal (the actual plug portion that has the overflow hole), i wonder if a few coats of rubber sealant on the hollow cylinder would make it more compliant a fit once cured. It's about a milimeter gap, so i think a layer of flex seal or something might make it that tiny bit bigger, and help prevent further corrosion
I can see that the gasket is needing to be replaced but I cant take it out because when I push on the pipe, there isn't enough room to work with. any suggestions?
If you push hard you can’t get any flex on it at all? You will need a little bit to replace for sure. Sometimes it is a lot of pressure that is needed. If you really needed to you could take the drain piece out of the tub shoe, but that can be a lot more work.
My kids over fill it all the time. I think with smaller type tubs overfilling happens a lot. I'm not a bath person so I don't know the water level for a person that likes to soak.
@@ThatFixItGuy ok so if I dont see water leaking somewhere around my tub I can assume the other flow is working right and I dont need to go searching or pull off the plate to check? Thank you
Well we’ll we have had water come through to the ceiling of the room under our bathroom and had “people “ in to try and find the leak upstairs. Even had the chimney repointing done! Omg
Do they sell the metal retainer plates? And if so where? I just opened up mine and it’s completely missing that plate. I can’t seem to find a place that sells just that piece.
www.plumbingsupply.com/drains.html#overflowplates you will have to scroll a little, but look for retainer plates or adapter bar kit. I hope this is what you are looking for.
That retainer plate will make sure the bottom over the overflow is a little more compressed for a good seal since the water comes from that side. Yes it should and will help compress the gasket. For whatever reason they did not really tighten anything. Very easy to prevent this leak. Thank you for the questions and for watching,
So if roaches are coming through the overflow does that mean that it wasn’t closed right and needs to be tightened? Or could roaches still come through? I never fill up the tub and let the water overflow into the pipe so I’m not sure
What do you do if your overflow pipe doesn’t have the two extra screws to attach that metal brace to the tub. Is it ok to just tighten the gasket and pipe to the tub without the brace or do I need to secure the pipe to the tub with the metal brace? My new tub stopper and faceplate came with the brace but I don’t see where to attach it.??? What am I missing?
Found out I had this problem the other night. Was taking a nice soak in our small tub. Kept filling it up as water left the tub from me submerging in it. Came down to a huge mess in our den. Ceiling and carpet destroyed lol. Oh well.
Oh no!! Sorry to hear that. I hate hearing this. This is one of those attention to detail little jobs that cause big damage at times. Hope it's just drywall and carpet. Its good you can add a LOL to your comment. Good luck with everything.
@@ThatFixItGuy Yes, but both bolts were so corroded that they just broke off. I think that the tail end of the bolts that stick out behind the pipe are corroded to the point that you can unscrew them. I thought about turning then clockwise & unscrewing them that way but they're frozen. I thought those bolts were not supposed to rust.
It would not leak from there unless water was up in the overflow. You may have a drain leak or if water is actively leaking it may be a leak from a water line. Do you have access from below?
@@ThatFixItGuy I never run the tub, I always shower. And yes it does have the diverter lever on the spout. I always pull it before turning it on for the shower head. I do notice water coming out the overflow drain part when it’s on, not sure what that means if I don’t run the tub.
@rebellehomme it should not be coming from the over flow. My guess it that it is running out the bottom of your tub spout when you use the diverter for the shower. Some water Is coming down over the overflow and some in the wall. If you can get down next to the spout and divert the water to the shower do you see water leaking from the bottom of the spout in the back?
So funny how you find bad plumbing work everywhere ya go....I just don't get it...takes just a touch more effort to do it right the first time right?

Wow I learned something about the the retainer clip. I'm heading to the bathroom that has caused myself and former owner to have it rain in the kitchen floor for years. I'm betting this could be the issue.
I’m glad this helped you out. Hope we can help you again.
Your channel is adored by everyone! Keep up the great work!” 😊
Outstanding video! One of the best on RUclips..
I tried what you said to do. Filling it up to the very top of the overflow, it started to leak. I'm at a loss.
This is my current problem Thanku for the video
Your very welcome. Hope you got it taken care of.
Thank you!!! 🙏 Straightforward and effective!!
Glad this was easy to follow and helped you out.
Well done. May I ask how you would remove the two plate mounting screws if they're so corroded with hard water buildup that they won't unscrew with a manual screwdriver? Thanks
You could try to remove them with a small pair of vise grips. I would use some kind of penetrating oil before you try to unscrew it.
@@ThatFixItGuy Thank you
Man, this is exactly my problem. THANK YOU!!!
So glad this help! I hope we can help again
Thanks for the great information and tutorial
Your welcome. I hope this has helped you out.
This was super helpful! Thank you!
@@ThatFixItGuy Since we are not using that bathroom now (after we noticed the water leaking on the ceiling), no leaking
Thank you for your help! 🙏 🙌 😁
Excited to see if this fixes my problem....but instead of leaking my tub is holding water with a super slow drain. When I push that pipe away from hole the water quickly releases as should (note, I completely detached the plug weight). It's missing that semi circle thing and if it has the gasket it feels very hard.
Is there a partial clog? If your pushing the pipe you may be pushing something out of the way.
I just replaced ours not because it was leaking but the plastic ring that the metal cover snaps on was broken. (It’s a newer bathtub) I replaced the plastic ring and it works fine. My question is do I need to caulk the metal cover to keep water from seeping in?
I have never done it or seen it done. That seal works great.
@@ThatFixItGuy Thanks 🙏
Good morning I stumbled across this video during a google search , I think this is exactly what’s happening with my leak. How much would you say this repair costs ?
if the piping is in good shape and you just need the gasket it is less than 5 bucks.
If sealed properly with the proper overflow gasket there should be no leak. You should be able to take a bath in your bath tub.
@@ThatFixItGuy Thanks for your reply! Good night! likes! subscribe! done! and will use shop link for later!
dude, I think you just saved my kitchen ceiling!

Great video! Keep them coming!
Thank you!
Do you know how to room the water that has leaked through this overflow and now is literally under the tub. You can stand on it and hear the water. Thanks. Great video.
Oh man sorry to hear that! Glad you found the issue!
Thanks.
Glad you got that figured and and drying out. You never know what the last person is leaving you with. Thanks for the update!
Thanks for the video. Extremely helpful!
Awesome! I’m really glad this helped. Hope we can help again.
Thanks! Off to homedepot I go...
So happy this could help you. Thank you for watching.
I don't have a retainer clip on mine at all unfortunately. Where can you find one? Tried looking everywhere - can't find one
Thanks for the tips Brian! Easy fix!
Does not always go like that!
Any thoughts on this fix? Think itd be easier than replacing the entire mechanism
Nice job. Thank you!
Thank you and glad I could help. Hope I can help again.

Definitely our problem, we had water coming down through a light fixture last night 🥴

Hey Brian thanks that was very informative 👍

Could this be the problem for me? I only get a leak when I spray the shower head directly at the tub spout and overflow cap.
Was the gasket not on properly at first?
I can see that the gasket is needing to be replaced but I cant take it out because when I push on the pipe, there isn't enough room to work with. any suggestions?
If you push hard you can’t get any flex on it at all? You will need a little bit to replace for sure. Sometimes it is a lot of pressure that is needed. If you really needed to you could take the drain piece out of the tub shoe, but that can be a lot more work.
Why didn’t you change the retainer clip to a new one? It’s kind of rusty. Are they hard to find
What do you do if the tub is on the second floor with no access behind the overflow drain??
Are people typically filling their bathtubs with water up to the overflow drain? Kinda high, don't you think?
My kids over fill it all the time. I think with smaller type tubs overfilling happens a lot. I'm not a bath person so I don't know the water level for a person that likes to soak.
Is it necessary to caulk around the overflow that touches the tub?
Great question. No the seal should make a water tight seal for you. Thanks for asking.
How did he know it was leaking? Went under the house randomly to check? Thanks!
He has a basement. It started leaking out of his laundry room ceiling.
Omg
Oh wow. Did this turn out to be your issue? Unfortunately this is pretty common.
Thanks for the information 👍
Thumps up and plus this video was a huge help on my end thank you so much for sharing

@@ThatFixItGuy yes but I could not find the metal part I needed to fix my tub but at lease I know why its leaking

Another great video brother
Thank you so much.
where can I buy the half moon clip? i have the same issue
Sorry it took me a while to locate one but here you go.www.plumbingsupply.com/drains.html you will have to scroll a bit, but it is on that page.
Thank you. This helped me!
What is that metal retainer called that holds the tub snug with the gasket?
What's the retainer plate for? Shouldn't the plate help compress the gasket?
You can totally just tighten up the cover plate with the gasket and you should be good. Is there just one hole to tighten down in the middle?
@@ThatFixItGuy No, just one screw on each side. 1960’s house. Old bathtub.
You should be good just putting a gasket on there and tightening up. I like the old school is still working for you.
Thank you

What if ours is plastic pipe with no retainer clip? I think mine is just a washer I looked it up
Found out I had this problem the other night.

How would you remove broken bolts in the overflow pipe.
is there a nub of the bolt you can grab?
@@ThatFixItGuy Yes, but both bolts were so corroded that they just broke off. I think that the tail end of the bolts that stick out behind the pipe are corroded to the point that you can unscrew them. I thought about turning then clockwise & unscrewing them that way but they're frozen. I thought those bolts were not supposed to rust.
Would it leak if the tub isnt on or full? My upstairs tub is leaking but water isnt on
It would not leak from there unless water was up in the overflow. You may have a drain leak or if water is actively leaking it may be a leak from a water line. Do you have access from below?
I have the same issue. Water from restroom is leaking through the bottom walls to my room which is next to the tub. It happens when I use the shower.
Not when you just run the tub? Does your tub spout have the diverter lever on it?
When it leaked did it run under the tub to the floor or what?
Thank you!!!!
