This gasket tends to leak over the years, and can cause a lot of water damage. If it leaks it should be replaced. This video will show you how to perform the repair.

There's no drain plate on my tub. So, do you access from underneath?

DO NOT use vasoline which will rot the seal! You should use silicone paste that is safe for rubber as they use for pool O-rings and brake parts on a car. Silicone is what should be used on rubber, petroleum products dry out and rot rubber.

Silicone grease or lithium grease can be used and will protect the gasket, while vaseline or any petroleum products will cause rapid deterioration and leaking in as little as a year...
Thank you for the tip about using back end of screwdriver to push pipe back. I was having a heck of a time trying to push with my hand while putting in and adjusting the gasket. I am very happy I found your video.

Very good video specially the part of using the screwdriver to push the pipe back. Just petroleum jelly should not be used on rubber it wears it out, only use plumbers grease.

Plumbers grease or silicone grease are ok.
Are there different types of plumbers grease? The grease I bought says not to use it in rubber.
Any product containing petroleum will deteriorate rubber at an accelerated rate. Ozone and UV radiation are enemies as well, but that is another application. Plumber's Grease is a petroleum product. It is best to install this gasket dry, but if it is absolutely necessary, only use a 100% silicone grease and use it sparingly. Everybody has their own opinion on the clocking angle of the beveled gasket. It all boils down to this; with the old gasket removed, insert the screws and pull the overflow flange until it contacts the tub. If the gap is on the top, install the thicker part up. If the gap is on the bottom, install the thicker part down. Non-beveled gaskets are available, but you will have to search for them. Did you noticed the squeaking of the threaded fasteners when they were removed? That would have been an ideal use of Plumber's Grease. Just rub a small amount on the threads during installation and in 10-15 years in the future, they will come out effortlessly.

I put a little anti seize lubricant on screw threads which makes it easier to get them out in the future. Agree that plumbers grease is a better lube for the gasket , although it might be decades before the P Jelly causes an issue.

Hey Tony, I love your channel! Very helpful and informative! I was wondering how do you know if it is the overflow gasket and or could it possibly be a damaged pipe?
In my case I filled the tub up with water and I could see the seal leaking. If you do this and it doesn’t leak, run your hand around the area where the pipe is leaking to see if you can feel where it’s leaking from
Their isn’t a gasket I jus took my plate off and seen !! I don’t take baths will it still leak from taking showers

Great video, thank you! Exactly what I needed. How tight should I tighten the faceplate down? Is this one of those things you don’t want to overtighten or should I screw it down as much as I can hand tighten

Thank you for this video! Mine must be from the 50's when my house was built because the bracket that the two screws go into sits outside of the hole so my replacement doesn't fit over the hole. It sticks out quite a bit. Is there a way to convert this lever type to just a plain cover without the lever? I have a rubber drain cover that I'd rather use to hold the water instead of this drip lever type. Thank you!!!!!

Just don't push the drain too much and you'll be okay If the dream comes out at the bottom then you made it into a big job so if you're going to push with a screwdriver do it very easy
Just had my bathtub refinished and painted. Overflow cover looks to be in rough shape and would like to get a new one. Are all over flow covers standard size, or do I have to pay attention to matching the right size?
There may only be a size or two to choose from. Bring the old one to the store with you to compare.
I believe mine has a leak. I took mine out and its non beveled. So whats the difference between beveled and non beveled? I'm thinking mine might have been improperly installed?

Do not use a petroleum based lubricant on a rubber seal. Use a little dish soap
Dish soap will dry up. Vasoline will help to gaurd against leaks
Totally agree because the petroleum products will deteriorate rubber.

I have the same question someone else had - and it hasn't been answered. What is the difference between beveled and non-beveled? If your tub is just straight maybe you shouldn't use beveled?
Bevelled with the fat end at the bottom. This is because when the bath fills with water and the person the weight causes the bath to drop few mm. The fatter end being on thr bottom means as the weight of the bath pulls it down it puts more pressure digging deeper into the fat end creating a tighter seal.

All instructional videos say to install with the larger beveled side down. But when I pull my old overflow pipe and elbow forward from inside the tub, if I place the gasket that way, there is clearly a MUCH larger gap at the top than the bottom. If I turn it over and install the other way, when I pull it forward and screw it down, it clearly makes a much better seal with the gasket touching the top and bottom of the hole evenly. Is this the better way to install it in my case, or would there still be some reason you'd want to "force" the large gap at the top closed by tightening the two side screws even harder?
(My tub is slanted very slightly with the bottom inward a tad more, but clearly the elbow is angled also so the bottom touches first.)
It's great that you're paying attention to the details of your installation! It sounds like you've found a method that works better for your specific setup. As long as you're creating a good seal, you should be good to go.
My main complaint about using Vaseline is that the ring can slip out while you’re tightening the screws and you’ll have no way of knowing until you open it up again. Clean and catchy rubber is ideal in my opinion. I wouldn’t use any lubricant in the future.

Thanks for checking out our plumbing video. The leak could be coming from the overflow gasket or possibly from the silicon around the overflow plate of shower head handles. If the silicon around these areas is gone it could be causing a leak. Hope this helps you out.

So, not to be redundant, but there is no visible overflow plate on our bathtub? It looks like someone prior to us rezened it over? Is that even an option? After taking a bath I noticed a leak downstairs and in the garage. The next morning it had dried up and I tried to replecate it... It didn't leak! I ran the shower also, and it didn't leak? WTH? Because, and for whatever the reason no overflow plate, I'm assuming it's likely, the drain? Unless, overflow is accessed from underneath? Now I'm confused... 🆘!!

What do i do if the screw is too tight/ rusted in place? Im worried because im starting to strip the place to put the screw driver in
you are using the wrong size screw driver if it is stripping easily. You can buy a new part and very carefully use a grinder to cut across the screw but you have to be careful to not cut too deep and hit the tub itself and then you can use a large screw driver to remove the screw and replace all the parts with new. Don't use a grinder if you are uncomfortable with one.

Is it nessesary to put plumbers tape on the screw threads?
No. Plumbers tape is used to make a water tight seal. Those screws don’t need to be water tight.

Can I just silicon this? The pipe protrudes into my bathtub so removing the gasket is impossible
The pipe shouldn't stick through the tub. You can use a gasket or plumber's putty under the tub drain flange.
What do I do when the Overflow pipe is too short on the tub
You may need to get another pipe
You buy a pipe extension, which is what I had to do.
I replaced old bathtub with new tub but overflow is about 1 1/4 inch away from tub? What can I do? Can I pull the PVC to the tub without damaging anything?
You may have to try a different overflow assembly

My pipe (screw holes) is off center. How to fix?
You might have to see if there is play in the pipe to move it over
Typically the thicker part of the gasket goes on top to compensate if the tub wall is sloping.

Alot of tub's dont slope anymore in the front.. I put a new tub in 2016, no front slope.. I put the thicker part on the bottom and that's also the factory recommendation on back of the box.. to be fair the tub on the box had a straight tub with no front slope

Sounds about right. Unfortunately plumbers are not cheap.
I was quoted $105 complete from a plumber when he was at my house for a pipe leak. I thought I had to replace the the abs drain, he said it's probably a overflow gasket. After I gave him the greenljght for the other pipe leak job he Told me how to do the overflow gasket and said the part was only $3. Not that i was going to have him doit but he Saved me $100 by saying I can do it myself. I didnt even know of a overflow gasket.
My ocd was triggered watching the petroleum jelly hang over the edge of the tub.

Hammer a screw driver of a larger size of the same type into the screw fitting and you can make a new fitting large enough to potentially turn the screw, and if it still gives you trouble try using a set of pliers to lock onto and twist the head and then bring the screw to your hardware store and find a screw the same size/buy a new cover plate for overflow in your tub
