  • In this informative RUclips video, we delve into the challenges faced during a scorching heat wave that poses risks to both humans and animals. With temperatures soaring to dangerous levels and humidex values nearing one hundred percent, working and breathing become uncomfortable, while the threat of thunderstorms looms.
Join us as we navigate through the precautions taken to ensure the well-being of our sheep. Due to the high risk of rain, haying continues while sheep work is kept to a minimum. Our top priorities today are providing fresh water to keep the sheep hydrated and safely storing all the hay.
Throughout the video, we discuss the signs of heat stress and breathing difficulties in sheep, which could potentially lead to pneumonia. We also shed light on how animals seek shelter, the risk of sunburns, and their reduced appetite during such extreme conditions.
Fortunately, most of our sheep have been shorn, aiding in their ability to cope with the heat. Additionally, we managed to stack the hay before the rain arrived. Join us as we hope for the heat to dissipate soon, ensuring the safety and well-being of our beloved sheep.

Wow, too hot! Way too early to be that hot, would you say? ☀️
We also have a 100 year old stone foundation barn and I love the cool it brings in summer and warmth in winter.
Making hay is a darn stressful job….good call on holding off on cutting more now. Sending u both good vibes for the next hay cutting. 🤞🚜

Absolutely! Way too hot for here and for me!😁 It should break soon though. But the rain and humidity have made the tough job of haying even tougher!

i love watching Arnie wrap hay, i find it very facinating, and amazed at how it spins wrapping the bale like saran wrap!

Oh the poor sheep, struggling in the heat! 😢
I hope that sweltering heat and humidity do not last long.
Thank you for keeping a vigilant watch on your sheep. 🐑

That heat wave was a bad one. Glad it didn’t last too long. Then it turned really cool. At least up here it did.
It is hard to realize how much hay needs to be put up in order to feed all the sheep for a year. Plus the straw for bedding. Mind boggling really.
    THANK EWE!!

Manitoba is a different story. Normal daytime temperatures for this time of year are 30C, give or take a few degrees. This morning it's just 14C and raining. It's been a rare day with us reaching even 25C. From a personal standpoint, if it never got over 22C I would be happy. But for farmers and those who want to blister their skin at the beach, cool and wet aren't very appealing. It has been a bizarre year with a too mild winter and not enough snow, followed by a too cool and wet spring. The only folk happy with the weather this year are those who've suffered from forest fires in the previous hot and dry years.

I would agree totally. 22°C is my sweet point too.

I'm so sorry that the hay has been so problematic this year. I hope that you and the sheep get through this heat wave ok. It sounds like a good idea to lamb in the winter. Hopefully there are no snotty noses or coughing! The breeze must feel so good in the heat. I had no idea that sheep could get sunburn. Arnie has lots of hay to wrap and I hope that no more hay gets lost! The rake and the wrapper seem like a really good investment. 1200 bales of hay is a lot of work and I hope that it goes well. Aww Hotlips! She's looking as cute as ever. They are so smart to find a little piece of shade. Oh no it's twice as hot under those feeders, too bad that they don't know that. It is good that they're almost all sheared. Take care and stay safe in the heat. I can't wait to see how everything goes tomorrow! Have a great day. ❤🐑

Thanks Jessica. It certainly has been a difficult spring for farmers. We all thought we'd be laughing with abundant hay but as the weeks go by, more and more farmers can't make viable hay so now are beginning to worry about a hay shortage in a hay glut year. So unusual and discouraging. The wrapper is the thing that is saving us!🙂

I feel for you guys suffering in those temperatures! We have also had to deal with the heat wave but your temps have gone much higher. We hadn't had rain until this week and the 3\4 of an inch barely settled the dust. The hay Arnie loaded looks beautiful! If he has hay that is too far gone for the sheep, would a cattle farmer not be interested in purchasing the rolls? Thanks for a great video, have a great weekend and stay safe!!🙏❤

Yes, dry conditions, despite the problems with rain, are, overall, more devastating in the long run and something I wouldn't wish on anyone. Beef farmers will not pay. We have given lots away though

Put a kids swimming pool in there for them, usually really busy in summer for lambing. Lambs will just stand in the water.

Farmers attitude your not overloaded if tires aren't flat and the tractor can pull it at 10 mph on the highway, usually not strapped down either😂😂😂😂😂

Water rules for animals are so simple--if you wouldn't drink it, don't make an animal drink it. Period.
