    Congrats on your promotion! It'd be great to get a video about your work in publishing alongside your coworker.
    Even as a diehard fan of the Women's Prize, I really applaud your decision to not read all the books listed if they don't spark your interest.
    I look forward to reading Anthony Trollope one day in a big binge. He was my grandmother's favourite author so I'm particularly keen to explore his work while wondering at what parts she might have connected so strongly with.
    Wow! High praise for Orner with the Chekhov comparison. I'll keep this book in mind.
    On the subject of personal health, a new book I'd really recommend is Sinead Gleeson's book of essays Constellations which looks at health and mortality in such a moving way.
    I don't have many life updates. I fill my days with ridiculous busyness. I got so caught up with editing a booktube video and baking a cake for my boyfriend's birthday this morning that I had to run to get my train for work and fell down like a duffus.

    I love you unplanned (I love you planned too). Congrats on the promotion that’s really exciting and muchly deserved. I liked your brief longlist insights. Milkman on audio is very good. My mums fav book of the last few years is Silence of the Girls. She also thinks, as a reader and a classicist, it’s the best retelling of a myth too. High praise. I’ve still not read it. Maggie Brown and Others sounds great. Tana French we are agreed on and it’s so rare to hear that. I’ve never read an Elizabeth George.

    So nice to hear you chat, Jennifer☺️ It would be great to hear more about your job - I recently started my first job in publishing (as a Junior Editor) so it would be cool to hear from someone else! Oooh I need to read some Trollope. Thanks for the reminder. ☺️

    Great to see you, Jennifer! I turned 26 last year, too, and omg do I have so much angst about the US healthcare system 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ this nation makes everything such a TRIAL, so sending good health vibes your way!! And between you and Katie from Books and Things, I might have to give Trollope a go one of these days!

    I've finished reading The Silence of the Girls yesterday and there's no way I could imagine you talking about it the way you've talked about the three books that you have read.
    So, you know. Good life choices, I would say.
    Always great to hear from you and always great to hear you are happily busy. Congrats on the promotion :)

    I was legit typing out "OKAY BUT IF YOU HAVEN'T READ GHOST WALL I IMPLORE YOU IF YOU READ ONE BOOK ON THAT LIST" and then you said you'd read it and I was like phew! I'm STOKED that Sarah Moss is actually getting some recognition for her fucking endlessly underrated craftsmanship.

    Please don't hesitate to take all the breaks. I'm grateful to have discovered your content. You're established what is an entertaining shorthand & the discussion you're igniting is important. I am fortunate the publishing world has a disruptor working from within & without. As has been said by Mahatma Gandhi: "Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will." The discussion in the future will be harvested from the ideas germinated from the meandering thoughts of today. For example Apple talked about all of their streaming projects but no word on the Asimov Foundation adaptation. Imagine where works like Circe & Song of Achilles will be when the streaming service providers hunger for the next Intellectual property to adapt?! One would think the discussion of the Women's Prize will provide the breadcrumbs to the next great adaptation. Someone is looking to sow, it is on BookTube to strike the Flint to ignite the discussion.

    I'm only disappointed that I don't get to hear you go off on American Marriage (I liked it fine but WHAT is it doing on this list?? lol). Sorry to hear about your growing awareness of mortality... it happens.. my body started to crumble at 35 though, you are too young! Life updates: not too many to speak of, withdrawing from social media/online life is still happening... tried learning French but stalled out a bit... just finished Vita Nosta, have you read it? I think you would have an interesting perspective on it.

    it is perfectly natural to freak out once you become more in tune and aware of inevitable death and to take inventory of what is worth doing in this life or to what things you will be dedicating your time. Highly recommend Ernst Becker's book The Denial of Death. It's fascinating at how he draws on philosophy and psychology to narrow in on this focus that you speak of in this video, where suddenly you realize how valuable your time is and the filter system on books you read becomes strengthened and resolute. Looking forward to your collaboration with a coworker.

    Love your mortality / Women’s Prize comments, all of the yaaass to that! 🙌🏻 I completely agree and had a similar response to the Australian list... I have heard raves for three titles that didn’t even make the shortlist, and have been pretty disappointed by those that I’ve read on the shortlist.

    Congratulations on your promotion👏💐! I did not care for Conversations with Friends. I was bored. I will try normal people eventually. I could not make heads nor tales of milkman. Congrats on your promotion.
    I really love your channel, but I'm gonna check you on your privilege. You being ignored by the publicist to not get a free copy of The Silence of the Girls is kind of off putting to those of us who have to buy or borrow every single book we read.

    • @InsertLiteraryPunHere
      @InsertLiteraryPunHere  5 лет назад +1

      Oh definitely, there's privilege inherent in that! When I first started watching booktube I remember being so annoyed at these people who were getting sent free books all the time, most of which they didn't even bother reading (which still isn't me, by the way - I get sent very few books). I was referring to it more as a disappointing business transaction, because I think I'm a good choice for that publicist to bet on. I've built this channel over three years and countless hours to the point where a decent number of people care what I have to say about books, especially contemporary literary fiction by women. Sometimes it's frustrating that the so few publishers understand what booktubers offer on this platform that's radically different, and often a lot more intimate, than traditional forms of book coverage. And the simple fact is that I can't afford to buy that many books with my salary! So after years of 100% free videos that has basically amounted to a part-time job at points, a girl can dream she'll get a few free books here and there :)

    • @Emmareads15
      @Emmareads15 5 лет назад +1

      @@InsertLiteraryPunHere
      For what it's worth, I believe you would have been a better bet with the publishers. I've seen it hauled by a few people and I don't believe they will even read the book. Personally I value your input on a book very highly, so obviously I think they should be giving you all the books you request!
      And I completely understand you being frustrated from a business/professional perspective.
      And on the whole, I have nothing against Booktubers getting free books to review. The only issue I have is when they are merely hauled and never read, or when the squeals are hauled without even reading the first book, but that isn't you at all.
      But, it is a privilege. And when it doesn't happen, it's an opportunity, perhaps to use your local library and then promote their use on your channel? I've been trying to make an effort to access mine a lot more this year as for some it's their only chance to be able to get hold of books, and without use, the service will be gone.
      But I love your channel, so know there was no hate or malice in my comment.

    • @InsertLiteraryPunHere
      @InsertLiteraryPunHere  5 лет назад +1

      Oh no worries, if I'd thought there was malice in your comment I wouldn't have bothered replying. But in this case my library is the New York Public Library, and aside from not really needing the boost, the wait times for the book I mentioned are realllly long 😅

    YES! Why wasn’t Signs for Lost Children feted the length and breadth of the literary world?! I really liked Elizabeth George when I was younger but haven’t read her for years and years. Maybe I will pick up the most recent book like you have - I’m always scared of doing that but why not? (Tana French is a bit hysterical in her prose but, for some reason, I don’t hate it.) And congratulations on your promotion. Whenever you make a video I’ll be glad and grateful. 😀

    Congratulations on your promotion, Jennifer! A video from you is always a treat, no matter what you decide to talk about ... or when. I love the variety in your reading. I get to see books I would never have thought of picking up myself, but I also see my darlings appear from time to time - in this video Trollope and George. And I do not enjoy Tana French, either. Looking forward to your video with your co-worker. Have a great time and take care! :-)

    Bother, no more skipping morning workout to watch new Literary Pun. But I refuse to wait. Hmmm. I will workout while this plays. *later* Congratulations on the promotion! Annd truly sorry about when your "body fell apart." Yikes. I'm glad you're looking well. I also enjoyed The Lesser Bohemians and loved The Remains of the Day. Also, I made myself take 100 Years of Solitude off my shelf and read it. I'm glad I did. Currently, I'm reading Middlemarch and it's on track to be a favorite! Oh, and I saw Bridget Jones's Diary for sale at the library for fifty cents as I was going out the door and thought, oh, heck, let's do it. Thanks for improving my reading schedule.

    perfect way to end a day ! seeing your face again ! first of all, I'm glad you're doing great again ! I'm French and I remember how I missed France when I was sick over there. I'm sorry to hear about that publisher who turned you down, I actually wrote twice to the same one, she said she didn"t receive the first one but then I just realised she never sent the book ! As for the Women's Prize, same as you - some books (as Mercy said) don't interest me at all. I should get Milkman tomorrow. I wanted to read Circe but you've been the third person who's not as joyful as the rest of the people. As for Elizabeth George, my Mom read one book and liked it but I never did read her. Have you heard about Vera Stanhope ? Ann Cleeves has created this English (from Nothern England) and I watched the TV series but then started to read the books and I really enjoy them. I have actually never read Tana French and your reaction today made me think I can do without. I read thrillers from Scandinavian countries or England, I like the pace much better.

    I just started The Warden yesterday as my first Trollope and already I'm like, yep I'm in this for the long haul. I thought the Women's Prize long list was so boring! And it didn't have to be! There are a couple on there that I thought were downright terrible (cough*American Marriage and The Pisces*cough), like, I could not get a read on what the judges were looking for, the quality is so over the map.
