I like the dynamic of your video. I’m leaving here just a tiny tip, you can charge them with an external power bank while in use, there are not going to be many cases that you’ll need to do that, but now you know. Great review.
Thanks that was my question. I CAN charge the transmitter while it is plugged into my laptop? I want to have the transmitter plugged into my laptop, and charge it at the same time with a regular 110 plug, that is possible ? Then I can run as long as i wanted because i can just swap out the receivers every 5 hours when one gets low.
Great video. I appreciate you showing how to rename the devices in RØDE Central on the Mac. I found the ability to do it when I connected it to my iPad Pro, but I'm glad to see there's a way to do it from the Mac too. Re: your file name dilemma... I would also like if RØDE would make the files named with a prefix (or suffix) based on which TX it was recorded on. If you're using both units, when you export them in, you'll have two files with the same name. The workaround I found for this, was to export the files to my folder, then select them all in Finder, right click, then click on Rename. It then brings up a dialog window. You choose "Add Text" from the pull down on the left side, type the text you want to add to the file name in the center box, and then choose "before name" or "after name" from the pull down on the right side... hit rename, and then it's done. I initially put TX1 or TX2 as a prefix, but I think I'm going to start adding it as a suffix so that it will sort them in a better order. If you discover a way to have the Wireless Pro differentiate them, I'd love a comment back. The other thing I haven't been able to figure out in RØDE Central is how to make recordings NOT show as new. I would have thought that once I listened to them, it would be like an email and change the status. Any ideas on when they are considered new vs not new would be great to learn as well. As for my use case... I'm an actor and I have to do audition videos. I did an audition on Friday where I put one on the reader, and one on myself, just using the regular clips. I was then able to adjust the volumes individually and have my audio more prominent than the readers, but both were crystal clear and the video turned out great and was not that hard to edit or sync up, even without using the timecode. I'll subscribe and I look forward to seeing more of your content down the road (or RØDE).

All of the indoor is shot using the FX3 in CineEI using S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3; makes for fast color work. For the color pop, I use the Color Shift DCTLS from MONONODES.

Thanks so much for the great video. And mentioning the file naming dilemmas . Everything you mentioned is some thing that I’m sure will aggravate me daily until they listen to you and fix it. And with all cameras and mics, I believe that they should all have a default naming convention. That is YYYY - MM-DD and timestamp. This way you would almost never have a duplicate or ambiguous file name. But as you mentioned, they also should add templates to modify this default on recording and/or export. But since I will almost certainly just be dragging the 32 bit float files, I will need them to update to have that with date and time stamps. I’m sure there’s the extra issue of when you export from the app that the Finder date and modification time become the date and time of export instead of recording. The Mic (lav) will have the biggest impact on sound quality. I use a DPA 4060 or a Sanken COS-11D. The nice feature of the Rode system is dual transmitters to single receiver and of course onboard recording which is great in a crowded air space with dropouts. So I can monitor the audio and also know that I get backup recordings which is huge. The 2.4ghz spectrum can get noisy in environments such as ballpark, stadium or large events. I have an MKE2 lav - should make a comparison video of the difference a lav can make. For the indoor talking head do you also book with something like MKH 50? Also are you recording to camera or field recorder?
@@richardweeks Self-creator who does talking head videos. Looking for simple and great sound. I've used the the RODE GO II and DJI in the past. I traded out of the DJI for The AVX because the DJI had a hiss with certain lavs in the past. I record directly into camera.
Yeah I too had a lot of issues with the DJI system. I used an AVX system for years and it was and still is great, very reliable system. The questions you need to ask yourself 1) do you need multiple TX? 2) locking 3.5 audio jack? Also on the avx. 3) basic time code 4) on board recording. If any of these features appeal to you it might be worth it. I will say that both are great right out of the box however I’d give a sound quality edge to the mke2 lav mic over the rode lav mics. Again you can always upgrade your lav mic as you need based on your budget etc. hope this helps. Let me know what you end up doing. Edit: also easier to use a 3.5 into other cameras if you don’t have easy access to XLR inputs.

I bought the RODE wireless go I years ago and it was awesome and incredibly reliable, and more recently the RODE wireless go II and it’s even better with the outstanding local recording on the transmitter, but how can one not be highly compelled to buy a 32 bit with time code, and more? The short answer is knock on wood, and I do that often, the previous gen has been bulletproof after 200 two hour shoots in the last three years. I bought the DJI system with all of its new found on board features, but the first one had a defect and didn’t record properly and the second one failed to record audio on one of the transmitters during a shoot so my partner, and I decided to return the DJI and get the RODE wireless go II. It’s been bulletproof as is the original, but now we have on board recording. Do I need to upgrade, not really, because we’ve never had sink issues in with two hour shoots. Do I like the added features and customization without having to go to the RODE app, 100% but is it necessary, not really. Will my next purchase be the wireless pro system? Absolutely! Between the lavs and the full functionality, and the charge case I agree there’s no better value out there at this price point. So for 95% of our shoots the RODE is just fine and we don’t need to go to a much more expensive pro system. The sound floor is great and we’ve never had any problems fixing any noise floors and post, but we do notice a big difference between the recorded audio on the camera and the local recording on the transmitter and that is absolutely a must for anybody who is interested in decent sound. That said, I appreciate your attention to the quirky details that all of us have to address when we’re working with any gear. This video is highly entertaining and look forward to many more. Excellent Video and very useful information. In the use case you showed us you had the receiver connected to the camera and you also had the transmitter internally record. In this case you already had the audio transmitted the the cameras 1st channel so you could very easily sync the files using waveform (because is the same audio and the only difference is the 32bit float). What happens when you have 2 cameras and want to sync them both to the audio and each other? In this case you can't have the receiver connected to both cameras at the same time. I am pretty new in timecode workflow so I am sorry if my question isn't valid
Great question - in the case of multi-cam, if you want timecode you'll need to get additional timecode generators like tentacle sync e or my fav the deity tc-1, then you can jam sync those from the Rode RX. I would only suggest this if you're doing a larger project with multi-cam. For simpler projects - like this very video with multiple shorter clips - audio sync with waveform matching works great 95+% of the time - you don't need to invest in timecode systems. A simple clap or two of the hands helps provide audio and visual markers to nudge up any sync issues you run into.
@@richardweeks So is there any practical reason to use timecode over waveform aligning? In resolve you can auto align clips based on waveform and in my experience it works very well even in different microphones. In this case it isn't even a different microphone, is exactly the same audio from the same microphone recorded at the same time. I can't imagine a real word example to use the timecode because you only have one RX so you don't have anything to sync it with
@@nicktsonis7102 there are many uses for timecode in post-production beyond just audio/video sync. For smaller projects - single day, 1 or 2 cameras, etc. - then timecode won’t be a ‘great’ benefit. however, if doing a shoot that takes many months, with lots of different cameras, audio, people on camera, multi-cam shots where some cameras don’t have audio (think crash cam), etc. the ‘book work’ of the shoot uses a lot of timecode - shot logging, EDL (edit decision list), etc. So, long story short, if you are just needing to align video and external audio, you can get by without timecode for sure as most NLEs are pretty good about lining up audio and video assuming decent scratch audio was recorded in camera. Timecode doesn’t start to shine until you are dealing with lots of media from lots of sources and trying to get it all synced up to be passed off to other teams working on the footage and audio in different stages. For the Rode system, since you’re getting audio on the left channel and time code on the right channel in mode 5, might as well use it. In time you might find it helps your current workflow or that it’s not really worth it for what you’re working on today.
Røde introduced the after market charging case for the Wireless GO II back in spring, but it's still not available here in Europe and cost a hefty $100 locally. Almost pointless to upgrade my Wireless GO II with a case instead of just getting the Wireless PRO...
Gave up before 6 minutes. Not familiar with Rode products and you made me imagine which ones were being used. Then, the “mounting” of “drives” which was both buggy and lacked any kind of orientation about what was going on… Sorry, the lack of clarity and lack of straight line description was too much.
Great video 👍🏽 I have the dji wireless 🛜 I’m satisfied with them. But I need a solution to have on one more set of wireless mics. I have 3 cameras and would like to have 2 wireless sets for 4 people. Do you have any ideas of how I would go about this? 1 dji and 1 rode pro ? Would that work?
as both allow for onboard recording you can always just sync in post with waveform matching - most NLEs are pretty good at this now. The big thing to really consider is the sound profile of each system - as the internal mics do have a different sound to them. but as long as your not swapping the TX from one shot to another, that is person 1 is always using TX 1, then you wont have to worry about someone sound different throughout the video. most of these systems can be closely EQ matched as long as you get pretty good sound at the source. hope that helps.

The hardware is good but the software is so clunky and hard to use. I hate doing anything but live-streaming with my wireless go. I hate going into the software. Cumbersome.

Not only does the new PRO kit provide the charging case, but also the accessory case which is a really nice addition as well.
