I thought Serizawa was actually heavily implied to be anti-Tokugawa. He was a patriot specifically to the Emperor and not the Shogun, which is speculated to be a possible reason why he was assassinated in the first place, and this loyalty was probably part of why he opted to stay in Kyoto, where the Emperor actually resided, instead of returning to Edo
Shinsengumi is the most popular "Underdog" characters in Japanese history both fictional and non fictional. This band of farmer born samurais became the last Shogunate's vanguard warriors for the duration of 6 years. *6 YEARS AND THEY ARE THIS WELL KNOWN IN ALL OF JAPANESE HISTORY.* 1. The Shinsengumi is the model for the characters for the popular 2015 Gundam series, Iron-Blooded Orphans. They wanted the main characters' Gundam Mercenary company to follow the narratives of the Shinsengumi group. If you like Shinsengumi, try Iron Blooded Orphans (IBO), it's pretty good.
for anyone curious, the person put in as todou heisuke is a character from hakuoki shinsengumi kitan, an otome/visual novel series. despite being a fantasy game, it for the most part, stays faithful to the real history of the shinsengumi
On my Journey to get all the Shinsengumi, Since Hijikata is where I started to love the Units. All I'm missing for now is Normal or assassin Okita. So I greatly appreciate a vid about them. Thanks for the vid.
Klidge, I would like to point out, we did get Kando as an NPC in the GudaGuda Yamataikoku event. I don't think he ever got a specific class as a servant but he was at least a featured NPC and you did use his game art during Hijikata's segment
the shinsengumi has been romanticised so much in media, i enjoy your recounts and tellings of the history, if possible could you maybe list your sources? maybe in the description or something for further reading?
Heya Klidge, loved the video! I was wondering if there were any other historical texts of which you would recommend? I've been meaning to write an academic paper over the Shinsengumi, but unfortunately their texts are hardly covered in the west, and my Japanese proficiency was not up to par when I was studying in Japan.
Honestly, Okita and the shinsengumi probably have the “Astolfo” effect double bad because of there popularity in anime and VN other than just Fate

Hey don't knock 6 years, the US confederacy lasted less time and people claim it as a big part of their heritage...
