      Tony Curran did such a great job in that episode that you feel how haunted Van Gogh was and when they take him to the present, its such a wonderful scene. Finally hearing all the rest of his setbacks, it makes you feel for the man and how hard it was.

    Fun fact: His youngest brother, Cor van Gogh, emmigrated to South Africa looking to get lucky off gold-mining. He also fought in the Anglo-Boer war on the side of the boers and after getting captured by the British and falling ill, he shot himself. Unfortunately no South African Fate characters yet, but I'd love it if you ever get to talk about some South African Historical figures and history one day

    First time I'm crying with a FGOtuber. His life was so tragic. He was sick, he needed help but one person, however kind they are, can only do so much when the world keeps kicking you in the face. I'm sure he would prefer a happy live over the admiration and fame he Goght posthumously...

    I was lucky to see his Bedroom in Arles painting in highschool and later visit Beyond Van Gogh exhibit. His artwork is achingly beautiful despite all of his troubles. It truly is a sad story of a man who just wanted to be recognized. The song Vincent by Don McLean shares exactly how I feel, and I encourage people to listen to it.

    His story is such a sad one and one I had not entirely known parts of until now so thank you for articulating the story of the prolific artist's tragic life to everyone. I have always loved the artworks of his that I've seen and when I saw he was introduced into fgo I knew it would be a servant I wanted to obtain and happy to say I did, nemo didn't go so well but that is another story, and I actually think that fate actually did a decent job into making the servant even though many may not particularly like the fate version and even I was taken back when I first saw that in fate he was made to be a young female servant but knowing the class was foreigner and the oddities of that class I was able to accept it and after using her in game definitely can say that I enjoy her.

  • @KurageHimari
    @KurageHimari Год назад +12

    She's my favorite servant in the game and the reason I still play to this day with such passion. I watched both your Foreigner video and this one, and you do a really good job of telling both Clytie's myth and Vincent's biography. I really appreciate it, as Vincent is also my favorite artist. However, I would have loved if you spent a bit of this video (because this one is specific to Van Gogh while the other is for every foreigner so you have to cut short) talking about Clytie Van Gogh as a character. The relationship she has with Vincent's mind and memories, starting by trying convincing herself and the others she IS Vincent, then blooming as she ascends and goes through a journey of pain, intrusive thoughts, destruction upon others and herself, and self isolation into the Void Sea, as she thinks she should stay there and not be a burden to anyone else. This is also where the Outer Gods part comes in, as they try to exploit her powers and nature, with Vulthoom kind of appropriating her body but ultimately failing at it. She is rescued by Chaldea's crew, with Nemo, Yang and Fran playing a very important role for her salvation. After being rescued, she is accepted by others but most importantly by herself: she is both Clytie and Vincent, so she calls herself Clytie Van Gogh from that point onward. She goes through a character growth that fits both of them. Her design doesn't stop the symbolism at the sunflowers: the whole jellyfish motive she has, and the lines about how she sees Master as "the sun in the sky" while she is "the moon in the sea", is because "kurage" (japanese for jellyfish) is written with the "moon" and "sea" characters.
    The moon shines only reflecting the light of the sun, much like a sunflower only blooms because of it.

    • @avizvit9932
      @avizvit9932 Год назад +7

      Something i noticed after untold hours of staring at my grailed Van Gogh while she kills the enemies:
      In ascension 1 she is trying to be Van Gogh, that's why she is wearing boyish clothes and has the sunflower.
      In ascension 2 she is trying to be Clytie, that's why she is wearing a feminine dress and is accompanied by the jellyfish while the sunflower theme is very muted.
      Ascension 3 is the synthesis, with the Sunflower and the Jellyfish themes mixed ( There's a sunflower behind her head, but it has tendrils ).

    • @KurageHimari
      @KurageHimari Год назад +3

      @@avizvit9932 More than trying to be Clytie alone, I think that 2nd ascension is Clytie's body itself telling her "you aren't Vincent and you know it", especially because in Imaginary Scramble it triggers after you go around the Nautilus with her and have fun. She starts thinking if she deserves to be happy when she's just faking her whole self, and the intrusive thoughts have the best of her, turning her like that. It can also be compared to Vincent's own self destructing episodes. That's why I think no ascension of her is just one or the other, every single one of her forms is her, the only thing changing is how she perceives herself and who does she want to be

    Though I do really wish that they did Van Gogh better in FGO. Made him the actual Van Gogh and still keep the tie in with Lovecraftian lore because I think that's perfect. The whole greek nymph and gender bend felt so very unnecessary and ruins the servant for me a little.

    Van Gogh probably had schizoaffective disorder, aka schizophrenic bipolar disorder. I have heard from other people (and to a lesser degree, myself) that alcohol calms down the overactive mind. Of course, we need to drink more each time to regain this state, hence alcoholism.
