Veteran teacher here. Take some advice....Leave and find your dreams. You must go early and don't look back. If you wait too long, you end up not leaving and overly stressed. It's kinda late for me, but I truly enjoyed hearing your story of people who made it out!
You are the truth. I switched from teaching first grade to tech. Being able to work remote alone was a huge benefit. I had more time to work out and sleep.
ALLLLL of this is why I want to make the change. You nailed all the problems with teaching and it’s validating to hear that there are opportunities to actually get what you deserve as a professional in a different space
You nailed it! All of it! I’m currently studying to make a transition into tech. The workload and the mental and physical exhaustion is really affecting my health. I hate having to feel guilty every time I take time off from work to do school functions with my two little ones. The lack of flexibility is also pushing me away from teaching! Oh, and not to mention, I hate having to lose a whole work day just for a 30 min doctor appointments. The list can go on! But thanks, this video is encouraging!
Im definitely thinking about going back into the corporate world. I've been teaching for 4 years but this is my first year teaching high school and I'm feeling burned out and like it's not something I want to do long term. Congratulations on your new job 💕😊
Thank you!! I definitely understand the feeling. Take some time to slow down and think about what you want. Take all the time you need! I know you will do what is best for you. Good luck on your journey 😊❤️
I’m so happy to have stumbled on your channel. It is my fifth year of teaching. Feel completely burnt out in this year has been the hardest so far… Talk about no admin support in these outrageous behavior issues in my classroom that have not been handled properly. Each and every day I feel like I’m not good enough and every time I try and catch my breath, there’s always somebody right there to remind me of everything I haven’t done. I feel in a sense that I am brainwashed to go above and beyond. As you know, we take our work home with us. My life revolves around being a teacher. All my money time and mental capacity is going towards ways I can support the students and make my teaching better for them. I am going on 31 years old with five years under my belt… But I am not happy. I am scared to change careers because teaching it’s all I know and I don’t feel like I can make a living with anything else 😔
Awww I’m so so sorry to hear this. 😥😥 That truly sucks. Teachers deserve so much better and I get it… but I can’t begin to imagine teaching in a pandemic or even post pandemic. I really want to encourage you to choose yourself, your health, your family, and your mental health. In whatever way that looks like for you and your family…. Whether it’s starting by not giving 110% every day, deciding to not take anymore work home, starting to look for a new job after work, etc. Changing careers is terrifying but it is worth it if you find something that fulfills you! You have many options as a teacher because there are so many transferable skills. If you decide to stay, I am cheering you on and encouraging you to set boundaries. You are good enough and setting boundaries is the best thing you can do. The students will be just fine! If you decide to leave, also cheering you on! It is not easy but it is worth it.
Same here, this is my 4th year and I'm 31. I'm completely drained. As the other teachers I also put my all into this, and you can get some reward in different ways. But, this excess of work and some student behavioral issues are so overwhelming. This is taking my mental sanity away. I know a few friends who decided to transition to another field because of the same reasons. They don't regret at all.
Girl, I'm so proud of you. Thank you for sharing this! Moving away from teaching, if it's just not the right fit, is definitely not talked about enough. Everything you shared is so real. I'm so happy you found something you love and makes you excited to go to work. Miss you though!
Heyyy Stefani!!! Thank you so much for the kind words!! It really isn’t talked about enough and for those who feel that way they do need support as well! I miss you too! I hope you are doing good 🤗❤️
I liked as soon as I saw the words “summer vacation” lol! Losing breaks is one of the top things I’m nervous about (and I hate when non-teachers talk about how lucky we are for having it). I am still considering leaving now after almost 9 years, but it’s nerve-wracking. I needed to hear a lot of these words, and I relate to so many others. Thank you!
You are so welcome!! I was super afraid of that too.. but now I don’t even think about it lol As a teacher you need that break so badly. I am cheering for you whatever you decide to do! I know it’s a tough choice ❤️
You go! So glad to hear teaching skills can transfer to another career. Things like, intelligence, grit, being in touch with your own feelings/needs, decisiveness. Thank you for posting your story 🙏🏼❤
So true! All of it, but really resonated with admin thinks they know it all even if you have tons of teaching experience like 15 years. Somehow these people, not in the classroom try to tell you 'how to teach.' Ugghh! That is so annoying to me, and I'm looking for ways to get out of teaching right now. And yes, let's all follow our dreams!!
I lost my job in special education recently and just decided to truly pursue my art and asset, world building and avatar creating and this was so helpful
I’m so sorry to hear that 😔 but soooo happy that you are pursuing your dreams!! Definitely have an IG page and/or Facebook page to show off your work! You got this!!

Hi Morgan. Great video, and spot on about the never-ending demands and the guilt-ridden "free time" while in the teaching field. Quick question: How were you able to make the transition from teaching to tech? New degree? Certification program?
You are welcome! I am a product designer and I work to design screens for apps. I did a tonnnnn of searching before I settled on this. I watched “day in the life” RUclips videos, read articles, and talked to people about different tech careers.
How did you do it? Did you go to a bootcamp? Do you have a CS degree? I'm a former teacher who is trying to be a front-end developer and I am still working on a few things to get me there, but I have made lots of progress since I first started. I'm interested in your story. Also, I totally resonate with everything your saying. Summer breaks are cool, but only teachers really understand why we need them. I'm almost retiring from teaching & somewhere in my mid-career I thought I can't do it based on all you said however with 2 small boys teaching gave me opportunities to be with them all holidays, summer breaks & sometimes spring breaks. Plus health care as you mentioned but most importantly your pension! 25 years & you can leave with over 1million in your pension distribution.

I’m graduating with my Master of Education in two weeks and already thinking of switching careers. I love working with kids but omg the salary is so, so low! Any tips on jobs and or certificates to get?
Awww yes try looking into Learning and Development which can also be called Instructional Design at companies. Your teaching experience is enough! You will help create training experiences for companies! Here is an example.. I’m sure you already do a lot of these things: careers.ey.com/ey/job/Atlanta-Learning-Instructional-Designer-GA-30308/793293401/?feedId=337401&LinkedInJobPostings&
This is so helpful to hear. I left the classroom in June of this year and am struggling yo transition into something else. What tech jobs/ companies would you suggest?
To be honest I wouldn’t limit yourself. You can go into any other field that you want to, and I’m not just saying that! Teachers work everywhere. You might have to get extra certifications or degrees but there are so many options for you. If you want to use the skills you have I would say look into Learning and development at any company that does trainings with their employees. Banking and Tech companies will pay the most.
@5:18 No, it doesn't change in Middle or high school, you work all weekend as well and feel guilty when you aren't working on lesson plans, grading, etc.
Hi Morgan! How did you get a job in tech? Like how did you tailor your resume? Which jobs did you apply for specifically? What certifications did you need? I need all the details please. Step by step.
Hey!! If you go to my first two videos, I talk a lot about how I made the transition. I chose to go to grad school for a tech degree because I am not disciplined enough for self study 😂😂 lol So I saved most of my money while teaching so I could pay for it. The degree program opened a ton of doors for me to get 3 internships. One of the internships led to a full time job! Although a masters degree is not required!! For my resume I focused on how I used technology in the classroom, how I taught what I did with technology to other teachers. I also showed how I managed my classroom and students. If it is helpful, I can do a follow up on this if my first two videos aren’t detailed enough 🙂
I get it. That is a tough decision to make! If you are still in school consider taking a computer science course first and see how you like it! Now is a great time to try things out. Don’t be afraid to switch directions.. that’s what school is for!
When it comes to technology, I am good with diagnosing and troubleshooting. I don’t know what the future holds, but at the moment, I don’t feel like going back to school. I feel like having great skills is ignored, and unless I have a degree, no one will take me seriously.
How long did it take to learn tech before you secured a job in it? Programming was not for me yet alll the money is in that field!! I dont want to go back to retail either.. which fields are best suited for former teachers?
I did a two year masters degree and started working right after graduation. I also didn’t love programming so I changed my path to design! lol To be honest any field that you want to do is well suited for former teachers. You just have to put in the work to make the change but you can definitely do something completely different
@@MorganChin thanks for reply, was offered a masters in educational leadership but then ur just still in education afterwards😂😂whole point is to get out though an MA in guidance counselling might entice me to stay but here in ireland guidance wud still require me to teach in classrooms unless the job was full time duties which is rare
help!! can you help me get a job in tech!! I practically have no life as a teacher I worked all week ....i worked Saturday,...I'm still not done today...its a 24 7 job..my lesson plan alone is 30 pages.
No previous experience at first! I went to graduate school and then did internships while in school. I had no prior experience before my first internship in this field! When I started full time my prior experience was 3 internships.
Hi Morgan. I know you are probably very busy but is there any way that I could email you to ask you questions about your experience? I was recently accepted to a graduate school program in Human Computer Interaction and I want to pursue it but I am terrified of the debt that I may accumulate in trying to pursue this career path. I just wanted to speak to someone who has made a career transition like this and believes that it is worth it. Thanks for your time.
I’m not exactly sure what that is! In the US the schools will have a principal that is over the entire school. Then, they will also have Assistant Principals that are in charge of certain things like grade levels or standardized testing. There could be 1-7+ assistant principals. It depends on the school size. The principals and assistant principals oversee the school!
@@MorganChin okay cool! So the assistant headteachers/ principals are the admin? If so, yes in the UK we have the EXACT same issues. Teachers have been on strike recently due to pay
@@amirariyama2349 yes exactly! They are the school admin or school administration. Wow smh that’s so sad… I am sorry to hear that. I hope things change for teachers everywhere soon 🥺
Hi Morgan! Thanks so much for your videos. I’m a teacher in New Orleans also a single mom of two. I’m completely drained. I feel like I spend more time with my school kiddos then my own. I’m currently looking into starting a online Masters program. Can you recommend any programs that can make my transition into tech easier? Or do you recommend attending a bootcamp? My hope is to work from home.
@@MorganChin Thank you so much for responding back so quickly. I am an out of the box thinker and really enjoy painting and art etc. I’m not really sure exactly what but I truly have a yearning to be able to express myself more creatively and I also have to be able to be in an area that allows work life balance.
@@Erica-il3cz hmm okay! So I would look into Technical artist, UI designer, UX design/product design, 3D artist, and visual effects! You can work at tech and video game companies among many others! Once you decide what you want to do, think about financials. Can you afford to go back to school, do you have time? If so, go for it. If not, do a boot camp. Either way look at t he courses to make sure they give you hands on projects and talk to the students about their experiences in the course!
I don’t blame you for doing what’s best for you. I am a health educator (non classroom) from a health promotion/public health background. I have 2 decades of experience in various roles and it’s laughable what seasoned public health professionals get paid compared to even entry level tech workers. It’s a shame. I see some of these snot nosed 21 y/o coming out of school with some tech degree (or not) or someone who crammed their way through a 16 week certificate program being offered high level, high paying jobs. The rest of us who eat, sleep, and breath current health affairs and research (your subject matter experts) get ignored. I’m happy for you.
It’s really sad that people are not paid fairly according to the work they do. It shouldn’t have to be one or another for fair pay. You shouldn’t have to leave careers you like for better pay either.
This was so incredibly helpful. This is my 2nd year, and I’ve just decided I want to transition to a different career path. I love technology, but I’m not sure how to get a company to take a chance on me. Thank you!!
I am soo glad that it was helpful!! 🤗 Congratulations on your decision! I know it is not an easy one to make. I am cheering you on as I know personally that many tech companies will take a chance on you!! Teachers bring an extremely valuable skill set to the workplace! You got this ✨
Not sure about the teacher bonds. Have worked with a group of teachers who actually called themselves “the mean girls” . Ive been gossiped about at the happy hours and just watching teachers dress to compete with each other was silly.
@@MorganChin I can top that. I know a group of mean girl teachers that would wear matching shirts that would say “The Real Teachers” and under that it said “You can’t sit with us”. The would all wear these shirts on the days of faculty meetings.
It depends on where you live and where you work! It can be anywhere in between 60,000-115,000. The higher end is going to come from big tech companies in areas with higher costs of living (California/NYC/etc)
I’ve been looking to tailor my resume to go into edtech. Summers off are overrated. They go by like 🫰. The raises you get each year are only hundreds of dollars. It’s rare that we get outside subs (I teach secondary) so if I’m absent, the other staff have to cover during their planning periods. I would probably feel guilty leaving my students behind. It is fun watching them be kids. If tried to transition out once before, but it’s hard. I’ve been in education my entire adult life.
I can relate! I miss the kids the most even now. However, I learned that I can still be a teacher or a coach with kids through Church or sports etc. Each year gets easier and you definitely begin to get used to your new work environment. The good thing is if you don’t like it you can always go back to teaching!

@@MorganChin thank you that's so helpful
@5:18 No, it doesn't change in Middle or high school, you work all weekend as well and feel guilty when you aren't working on lesson plans, grading, etc.
Awww no 😞 so hate that is normal for teachers. It’s so unhealthy!
I taught for my salary! It wasn't enough as a teacher. You doubled your teaching salary? Good!!!
Yes I did immediately after leaving teaching!
@@MorganChin thank you so much!!!
I have a question Morgan, what is your education background. I have a BA in English and MA in Ed Leadership and I want to pivot badly.
Sure! I have a BA in early childhood education with a minor in Spanish and an MA in Human Computer Interaction
I’m curious what positions within the Tech field do teachers typically transition to?
I know a lot of teachers do Learning and Development type things but I don’t think there is any one career. You can go into any one you want to!
I like to secretly call myself an honorary Apple genius because I know everything about most Apple products.
Good stuff Morgan! Keep up the good work :)
Thank you so much!! 🤗
Literally debating on switching my major from el Ed to computer science bc the money is just not there. I have kids to support
I get it. That is a tough decision to make! If you are still in school consider taking a computer science course first and see how you like it! Now is a great time to try things out. Don’t be afraid to switch directions.. that’s what school is for!
Do computer science. When you get into the real world you’ll see how underpaid teachers are
Thanks for sharing!
Great video!
Thank you!
@@andayibrewmbirika2441 of course! Lol oh wow! well I’d advise spending some time thinking about what you want to do and then going for that
Everything you said, so true. Sigh!
Yes it’s difficult. I’m cheering you on though! 🥰
help!! can you help me get a job in tech!! I practically have no life as a teacher I worked all week ....i worked Saturday,...I'm still not done today...its a 24 7 job..my lesson plan alone is 30 pages.
I am so sorry to hear that! I have a bunch of videos on my channel talking about how I made a transition!
Did you take courses to do this tech job? Previous experience?
No previous experience at first! I went to graduate school and then did internships while in school. I had no prior experience before my first internship in this field! When I started full time my prior experience was 3 internships.
Hi Morgan. I know you are probably very busy but is there any way that I could email you to ask you questions about your experience? I was recently accepted to a graduate school program in Human Computer Interaction and I want to pursue it but I am terrified of the debt that I may accumulate in trying to pursue this career path. I just wanted to speak to someone who has made a career transition like this and believes that it is worth it. Thanks for your time.
Hey! Nice to meet you! You can DM me on IG (morganchin_). I don’t look at email often enough!
What is admin in America? Is it like Head of Year in the UK?
Could you give me more information on becoming qualified for Ed tech
Hey! Sure. Do you mind elaborating more on what you want to know?
@@Erica-il3cz hey! So happy the videos help! I can understand how you feel. Teaching is hard 😥 Do you know what job you are wanting to do?

@@lisad355 Best and quickest way to learn?? Also, what programs/courses?
@@aliciagoodman3659 how good are you? with Apple products, because I am good with Apple products.
Not sure about the teacher bonds. Have worked with a group of teachers who actually called themselves “the mean girls” . Ive been gossiped about at the happy hours and just watching teachers dress to compete with each other was silly.
Oh wow. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. That is not okay at all. 😓
And it still goes on.The mean girls clique is the worst 🙈
@@lindagithaiga1974 wow. Well at least you know you don’t want to be friends with those people. Smh
@@MorganChin never have been and never will.am good.
@@MorganChin I can top that. I know a group of mean girl teachers that would wear matching shirts that would say “The Real Teachers” and under that it said “You can’t sit with us”. The would all wear these shirts on the days of faculty meetings.

Great video! Can you give me a ballpark amount of what your entry level salary is? Please! #Educator
It depends on where you live and where you work! It can be anywhere in between 60,000-115,000. The higher end is going to come from big tech companies in areas with higher costs of living (California/NYC/etc)
@@MorganChin if you live in Silicon Valley, then you’ll definitely be paid more.
If you live in Silicon Valley, you’ll definitely be paid more, because that’s where all the big technology companies are located
@@204august2 yes you will but also because the cost of living is higher!
@@MorganChin I am making more than 60k in teaching and that’s what keeps me from leaving…
I get so tired of the minutia. The dress-ups, parties, crafts, and petty people. I can’t do another year of this.
That’s understandable !
