  • Hi, in this video I will be roasting a whole chicken in a 12cm Zebra billy can/pot over my Firebox twig stove. Ideal for solo trips when you don't want to carry a bigger pot or a dutch oven and weight is critical, you can roast your favourite meat or fish over your stove and enjoy a more varied camp diet! For more ideas on how to cook with your Firebox stove and roast using the larger Zebra billy cans, check out the FireboxStove channel. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!

    I did a large chicken for me and some friends in a 16cm Zebra over my 5" G2 Firebox this past weekend too. I got it a tad over-done (was expecting it to take MUCH longer than an hour), but it was quite delicious. 👍

    Hi Simon, one tip i feel i can give is for your fire on top of the billycan. Get a sack of weber bbq briquettes; take a few with you on a camp. They are dense lumpwood as a source so burn long and hot once lit. For early or late year camping i can see this being a big help by giving you a stable long consistent heat so you can do other things whilst your food cooks without worrying it has died out etc. Great vids by the way, really enjoying them Simon.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks buddy, good tip! A few briquettes doesn’t take up too much room, and much easier than keep replenishing embers! - I’ll give that a try. Cheers, Simon.

    Hi! Simon! Thanks for sharing your outdoor Chicken cooking with the Firebox stove. One thing you try next time is putting some small rocks in underneath your piece of aluminum foil to add some control to the heat inside the pot. and also that would help keep the chicken a little further off the main heat from below. That must of been fun to do outdoors there. I love cooking outdoors and it seems to make the experience much more enjoyable.

    We just spent a small fortune having our kitchen 'done' (and we couldn't use it for a month - fitter's wife had a heart attack as it was all cleared out) but honestly the best times were when I had to cook outdoors on my camping stoves or on coals! I am asking for a firepit in my back garden for my birthday so I can just sit outside and cook from now on!

    Nicely done. I’d suggest keeping just the bottom heat source and rotate the can over time. You could suspend the chicken in the Can with aluminum slats.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks! Good idea with the slats, I’d thought about rotating the pot as you suggest, just thought the chicken would keep slipping back to its original position as the billy is turned - but perhaps if the slats were a tight fit it would grip it. Thanks for the tip! Atb, Simon.

      Strange Trails - Hi Alec, thanks for watching mate! You might need a bigger billy can for Christmas dinner dude - i reckon a remodelled beer keg would do the trick!! It came out really well - even the ‘caramelised’ bits were good! Cheers mate, Simon.

    Nice one Simon,
    I'm a new subscriber, but I have seen a few of your vids, I have a 12cm zebra, I have a tray, homemade out of the thick aluminum tray you get in the ready to cook stuff at the supermarket, and it keeps the juices in the tray, plus you can throw a few few small spuds and carrots in,, 😀 😀,
    Maggie would love it 😂😂👍👍👍👍.

      Use a good chicken leg, skin on, has more fat, stays. moist don't use a breast it will dry out in a small pot, you also get crispy skin, give a good leg an hour or so medium heat, not to fast, you will never cook a poussin again my friend, and give you plenty of time to put in, spuds, carrots, parsnips, beetroot, squash.... hungry yet?
      If you freeze meat before a trip you can have chicken up to day three, and beef /venison 4/5 may be day six depending on conditions /storage, and root veggies and squashes keep for ages, leeks, onions, hard cabbages, plus many other veg and fruits keep well for a long time, we may like to be out in the woods, but if you don't have to travel too light why live like a caveman, check out one pot cook books and adapt them,
      You may have sussed I don't do MRE.
      Looking forward to seeing more of your posts,
      Many thanks.
      Nige.
