As a biochemist, I have always wondered how DEF solution works in near freezing storage conditions. The urea is 5.4 molar at 32.5% and will crystallize near the freezing point. In the lab it is a pain getting the crystals back into solution even with heat. Are the pumps designed to handle dissolved solids because there is a good chance that the crystals still persist after the DEF has thawed enough to begin flowing?

    • @raiden000

There has to be a solution, even big rigs have these systems, our entire shipping system relies upon it.

Own a 2014 Grand Cherokee with Eco Diesel, 65,000 miles. Failed DEF pump at 10,000 miles. That has been the only mechanical failure. Most significant problems involve computer updating emission and engine. After one update had persistent check engine light for months trying to get it sorted out. After all the emission problems with EPA went from 28 MPG to 23-25. Love the Diesel engine and am thinking about a new Wrangler with the diesel. Owned a Wrangler in the past- Jeeps are fun but expect some issues. Good news- collected $4000 from Jeep for EPA violations!

I have a 2021 diesel gladiator as well. I had the same issue. Amazingly my dealer researched this and found an FCA bulletin that said it was an electrical harness. Bad pins in a connector. That’s why there are so many codes. They replaced the harness and no issues. May not be your issue, but something to investigate.

Sometime ago I researched the actual engine and manufacturer learning much in doing so. When I mentioned to my son I saw several videos how this oil burner was so amazing, he loudly ordered me to stay the hell away from diesels period. He’s a professional truck driver and he HATES the regen systems. The truck industry as a whole suffers load delays, driver time, shop time constantly dealing with these issues. He goes through limp mode about twice a year. Volvo tracks. 2021’s

Yes modern Diesel engines are crap!
It’s not a freezing issue either! I live in Texas and my Ram 3500 did the same thing in June! And I was told my warranty would not cover the $7000 repair!
I traded it for my Mojave Gladiator….y’all can keep your diesels!
I too am a truck driver and should have known better… all 2009 and up Diesel engines are junk because of their DEF systems.
I would never have purchased that Dodge Ram if I would have known that the warranty was not going to cover DEF break downs! I’m still passed off about that whole deal!

The DEF in the tank being frozen and not running the truck long enough to fully thaw it can cause the level sensor to not be able to report the remaining DEF. If this continues for too many key cycles it can trigger a CEL. If this happens again you can bring it into a heated garage overnight to allow the DEF to melt, or let the truck idle outside for (not joking) 2-4 hours so the entire tank thaws. The Gladiator DEF tank is quite tall and the heater is only at the bottom so it can take some time.
In your case, based off the codes, it might be a heater issue with your pump module. Its possible that the wire isn't fully seated for the heater and its getting interment signals. Or, you're unlucky and gor a bad heater, which would require a tank replacement, which would be covered under warranty.
Pump pressure too low after swapping pumps is a decent sign that the heaters aren't working as there's likely a cavity of air where your truck used the melted DEF and and the frozen block of it above the pump. This can cause further issues as the pump is not great at self priming.
I hope you managed to get this fixed and are enjoying your truck.

I have a 2020 Jeep Wrangler with the eco diesel and had the same/similar error codes at only 300 miles. I took it in to my dealer and the write up was that the tightened up a few things the looked loose, sounded like BS to me. The check engine light did not come on so, ok…. The following day I drove it cross country and the def warnings started this time telling me that in 155 miles the engine will not start GREAT!! Not what I wanted to see being now over 1000 miles from home. The engine however did start thankfully. When I got back in town I took it back into the dealer and they ended up ordering a new def tank and def heater. They had my Jeep for about a month due to the parts were on back order yada yada. Got it back and so far things have been good. Good luck to you!

I appreciate your Insight. I myself have been trying to debate whether or not I should get the gas version or go with a diesel.
I can see the benefits and the downsides to both. It comes down to cost. Because of the price of fuel locally, it's actually more cost-effective to drive diesel but because of the expense of buying the diesel over the gas, it's actually cheaper to purchase the gas version.

@@MaxOverland - My dealer is still stating that the DEF froze in the tank and caused the infrared gauge to produce a false negative report of no DEF in the tank. This placed the Jeep into "limp mode". There were no check engine error codes, just the DEF sensor stating there was not DEF in the tank. I wonder if anyone else has ever experienced this in very cold weather. I do know that DEF freezes at about 10-12 degrees.

Urea is injected into the scr. Reacts with NOx and turns it into nitrogen, oxygen and water.
Some vehicles have a dpf and scr. Some pre 2012’s only have the dpf.
The main show is the dpf. Where it traps all the soot and burns it in a regeneration when it’s full by either fueling it with another injector within the dpf, or on the exhaust stroke in the engine.
And ur Adblue tank has a heater …
Modern day diesels have these systems. They are all problematic especially if you only do city.

Mine did it at the exact same mileage. I reset it myself the first time but it came back. I then took it to the dealership and they said it was air pocket on the DEF system. Who knows if it comes back. I still love the truck!

Having owned a 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel I can say that the engine is a POS. Consumers get caught up in the idea that "hey its a diesel AND it gets pretty good MPG. Well, with an EGR DEF system it wont last long. GUARANTEED!I cleaned my EGR tube numerous times, cleaned my TPS, got my fingers into the intake and I could pull out and visually look in and see TONS of nasty coked up soot. NO way it'll last. Traded it in for a 6.4 Gasser... Couldnt be happier. If you want a diesel....get a diesel...not an ECODiesel.
