Balance in Overwatch has always seemed like a conundrum to me. Both in pro play and in ranked. I feel like very often, teams and players will be too stubborn to try something new and quickly accept a meta, especially in solo queue. An example of this in pro play was how Chengdu Hunters constantly stuck to their triple dps comp against goats and people laughed at them for it, when eventually it was accepted as a counter to the goats comp. It's just a matter of playing different comps and making them work rather than a set meta you always have to play. I'm kind of disappointed that this video didn't mention this example because it's a big talking point about meta perception in Overwatch and highlights how balance involves both the developers and the community who play the game.

I always thought that the fact you didn't need God level aim in ow to succeed was one of the best things about it. You can do just as good by having a big brain and it's one of the things that sets it apart from other fps games
I would usually agree, but the biggest drawback is that Blizzard is pushing it to be a competitive esport and being casual, thus alienating both. Though being for casual and being for competitive aren't mutually exclusive, there are a lot of elements on both of them that actually are. Extremely mobile Tanks, giant shields, and attacks requiring very little aim are OW's biggest problems (though there are a lot more) that are extremely catered to casuals that kind of ruin the experience for competitive play. Paladins actually kind of has a solution to this problem by having some sort of economy system in matches that allows you to buy some passives that can help in increasing damage dealt to shields, reducing healing effects against damaged enemies, and some other stuff. It's not necessarily completely balanced (because Hi-Rez), but the fact it exists has made the game's usual team composition more fluid and open to experimentation. Team Fortress 2 is usually what some of the older OWL pros would have preferred if only its competitive scene existed (I can't find the source anymore, but it was from Richard Lewis asking some pros). I think, if TF2 actually had an esport presence, then maybe OW could have focused more in its strengths (being a more casual game) than trying to cater to too many people, ending in catering no one.
@@DenyDenDenzel I completely agree. I was never saying a ow is a perfect game, I just thought that aim not being as important as other fps game isnt necessary only a bad thing. The main problem with the game is trying to make it both a very casual and very competitive game which just makes the game worse for both types of player

True. I had to play mcree after a lot of stuff changed, especially when role queue came out. My sr changed a little but however, it wasn’t fun anymore. I went from 3300 to 3700sr just from playing mcree in about 2 seasons but I stop playing now. Been so long since I last played overwatch. My top 3 (rank) master pick is widow, mcree, and genji. I find them 3 very useful for me or pharah, and Ashe, they’re also deadly
All the hype and excitement around Overwatch evaporated with Brigitte and GOATS, and it has never come back. Whoever designed that character should be fucking fired because they don't have a clue about what makes the game fun.
But when back in the day you were complaining about Brigitte to be wrecking the game, you were "salty", "uneducated" and "just stay away from lul" I didn't even play flanking dps and I was sick of her the 2nd day.
It's always been a moba lmao people just didn't know how to play back then pine wouldn't do very good against current teams even on the same patches from years ago
Pine was a ghost story in the ladder of Overwatch. He was insane and he has an uncanny level of aim coordination. Its a Cinderella story for players like pine Defran and all that to show their talents and it is just as sad to see these players lose passion to play. Its like watching a once beautiful land of color and energy slowly fade in to a very tired and lethargic grey.
@@vedpatil2353 "being pinned down" - realistically, if youre good at the game, that doesnt happen. you go from cover to cover, you use shields, you strafe, there are any number of ways to counter it. a good widow may still kill you, but thats expected if its pine or whatever. the point is that she takes skill to use anyway. a silver probably wont do jack shit on her, while pine will probably destroy pro lobbies with 50 health and one shot before he has to reload.
Ok that's enough. Imagine how much more pressure Pine gets now for his return and his performance if he does after watching this video. The reasons for him quitting are the problems your presenting him right now.
It’s good to hear that overwatch is leaning towards a better state. I can remember my reactions to all of pines crazy highlights but I feel like it will be hard for the league to gain traction again as something people will want to do unless there are drastic changes
You should have included that in season 3 those aim based heroes like McCree, Ashe, Widow, Tracer were all meta at some point during the season, kind of left that out of the video for narrative purposes I guess :p
So are you also gonna talk about how Season 3 had some of the best moments of all of OWL, we had sniper metas, we had genji meta, we had soldier tracer meta, we had double shield, we had monkey zarya, this has been the best season of OWL yet if you actually know how the game works. But no, you just wanna cash in on, "Oh, OWL is bad and Overwatch is dead."
A lot of people act like Pine disappeared for some reason. He’s still there. He participated in the recent Korean Gauntlet Open Qualifiers. He teamed up with a former OWL player named Xepher and some other players to try to participate, but was knocked out in the ro16. He might not be OWL level anymore but he’s still playing the game.

Because of his success in the CS they threw a bunch of money at him to cast in OWL while having little to no experience casting it. At least people like monte and doa spent a year in korea casting OW and adapted the game while semmler never really adapted and everyone in the community acknowledges he was a shit caster for OW.

Pine is what got me hooked on Overwatch. I really hope to be graced by his godly presence next season.
I feel bad for uncle jeff, literally doesn't get what community wants but keeps getting hated on
ikr, the community doesnt know what they want but they want it fixed.
No matter he's back babyyyyy
When I heard that pine was going to be released from New York, I thought for certain that somebody else would pick him up so he can see his brilliance again. But that didn't happen.
It did
@@xalted5207 I meant in season two or three.
9:55 i love the mug btw
Hey the score esports, you should do a video on Halo on the Ogres. Two twins that were the best of all time. It was basically one of the first esports and pretty interesting.
They did
Did them a long time ago
They already did.
Oh wow. Had no idea, thanks dudes.
I find them 3 very useful for me or pharah, and Ashe, they’re also deadly
better title: the rise and fall of overwatches Esports scene
That Pine clip on Junkertown B never gets old
All the hype and excitement around Overwatch evaporated with Brigitte and GOATS, and it has never come back.
Much much love for the man Pine and hope he finds he much deserved success!
7:16 I hated GoATS and double shields, but Jeff has a point😂
Not really. He just mentioned bad metas.
Dive was cool, you could play different heroes depending on the maps.
No he doesnt as they are the exact same thing, stacking one gameplay aspect till it breaks the game.
He really doesn’t, the fact they took so long to switch metas ruined the game.
They went from goats to double sheild and they were wondering what the problem was lmao
Imo they made overwatch more MOBA than FPS.
its always been a hybrid
It's always been a moba lmao people just didn't know how to play back then pine wouldn't do very good against current teams even on the same patches from years ago
Pine was a ghost story in the ladder of Overwatch. He was insane and he has an uncanny level of aim coordination.
Its a Cinderella story for players like pine Defran and all that to show their talents and it is just as sad to see these players lose passion to play. Its like watching a once beautiful land of color and energy slowly fade in to a very tired and lethargic grey.
And devs still nerf widow and hitscans because "oh nwo i cant pway awound covew, better newf"
Ah yes because being pinned down for 30 minutes straight in a game that exemplifies 3D movement is so fun to play
You need to have zero knowledge about overwatch to say stuff like this.
@@arthurmuller3743 lol sure bud
@@vedpatil2353 They made shield meta for folks like you
Gotta day ever since Pine left I felt like a piece of Overwatch was missing. Really glad to hear he's coming back.
Ok that's enough. Imagine how much more pressure Pine gets now for his return and his performance if he does after watching this video. The reasons for him quitting are the problems your presenting him right now.
You are seriously overestimating how much power a score esports video has, he will be fine
It’s good to hear that overwatch is leaning towards a better state. I can remember my reactions to all of pines crazy highlights but I feel like it will be hard for the league to gain traction again as something people will want to do unless there are drastic changes
Also blizzard: takes months to get rid of goats
Basically 1 year + hahaha
Finally someone summarized that in very professional way. I hope Jeff's bosses can see that.
You should have included that in season 3 those aim based heroes like McCree, Ashe, Widow, Tracer were all meta at some point during the season, kind of left that out of the video for narrative purposes I guess :p
HE’S BACK BABY
speaking of aim games why havent you guys ever covered the Arena Shooter Genre on this channel? Quake, Unreal Tournament ,Diabotical etc.
you know why.
@@nsmoonwalk414 no why?
Now 2021 came along he is on a new team and he's back.
I use to be in love with overwatch. But honestly overwatch lost me when changes kept happening. I hate it.
I mean it's a lot better since a lot of these changes
Pine back on Dallas whoo!
At least the video ended on a more positive note. That's a step in the right direction for them.
Last sentence is pretty much 95% of OWL esports content that isn't from dedicated channels.
OWL is dead g apart from the fake chinese numbers
@@CuteWeeb Less popular than it used to be, not dead.
Hey, big boss Pine is planning to come back to OWL. He just has to make it through contenders
I was here when it said 47 seconds ago
Great video, haven't played OW seriously in at least a year so, nice to remember this stuff
you want to know the fall of overwatch aim gods
briggite 2x shield rien zarya dive comp goat comp game decline smurfs
A lot of people act like Pine disappeared for some reason. He’s still there. He participated in the recent Korean Gauntlet Open Qualifiers. He teamed up with a former OWL player named Xepher and some other players to try to participate, but was knocked out in the ro16. He might not be OWL level anymore but he’s still playing the game.
since he took a break, he needs time to get back to the pro level, and that takes a LOT of time
I feel like theScore doesn't have anyone actually watching OWL/playing based on the videos they do tbh its some hits on big ideas with also misses everywhere...
I knew one day this vid would come, and i was not sure do I would like it, this is a tragic story. miss pine
semmler is probably the worst caster to interview about overwatch, he's actually clueless
What did he say wrong in the interview tho
@@gotchaboi5871 reply cause I wanna know too
@@gotchaboi5871 probably just kids saying shit to sound like they know something, semmler cast csgo if im not wrong but what he said was within context and digestable
@@gotchaboi5871 nothing he said in the video was wrong but as a caster he was terrible for overwatch. He was an amazing caster in CS but it didn't translate into OWL. He had a surface level understanding of the game and his casting style, while great for games like CS, didn't suit OW. Everyone in the community acknowledged that he was the worst caster in owl. Because of his success in the CS they threw a bunch of money at him to cast in OWL while having little to no experience casting it. At least people like monte and doa spent a year in korea casting OW and adapted the game while semmler never really adapted and everyone in the community acknowledges he was a shit caster for OW.
The irony that pine is now back in the league 😂
They bragged it to be the NFL of eSports and turned out OWL just crashed into obscurity.
Too slow with changes.
New heroes come only in 6 or 7 months.
Still can't balance some heroes.
Recycled events.
OW2 still no news about it.
Ehhh I still watch it every week this season was pretty good in my opinion
I miss old overwatch I played when it first came out (back in 5th grade) and I mained reaper and got a 50 player kill streak, the game was so simple and balanced (there weren't any broken metas at the time, at least i didn't find out about any)
Gonna cover that before Pine went off in Overwatch that he was one of the best Team Fortress 2 snipers???
Or not if the video is mostly about OW just losing popularity
We all just not going to talk about ans
