I am surprised that we know so little about the victim. Who were her friends? Did she have any enemies? How was her relationship with her stepmother? So many questions unanswered.
To me this sounds like a sexually motivated crime, but the killer was inrerrupted by Valerie's stepmother. For whatever reason it seems like she was targeted, and unless it was some conspiracy/motivated by her father's politics, this seems like the most plausible explination imo
Barbara Dahlia Gordon I Agree. She was a beautiful accomplished young woman. The neighbor was stalking her. Or that robber that belonged to that gang was. In any case, both guys are long dead and gone
Devi I don’t appreciate the snarky tone of your comment (which was totally unnecessary) when yes, sadly, rapists DO debilitate or kill their victims before assaulting them. It could be because killing is part of the fantasy, or because they don’t want the risk of the victim raising the alarm - which is my opinion is most likely as her family were close by. It’s an awful possibility but definitely shouldn’t be dismissed, statistically it’s much more likely than some political motive and especially considering the lack of evidence supporting any other theory.
So maybe a police officer killed Valerie? But what was the motive? It would be interesting to know how the killer was holding the flashlight. Police hold a flashlight with a raised hand. This is reminding me of the Sherri Rasmussen case. LAPD covered up the link of killer, a police woman, for 20 years. Sorry for rambling.
This is why I sleep with a baseball bat next to my bed, but how it would hold up against a bayonet, I don't ever want to find out ! This was so sad and scary ! She never had a chance.
I am originally from Wilmette, Ill. I was about 13 when this happened. (Winnetka and Kenilworth were just up Sheridan Rd.) I remember everybody talking about this. Things like this didn't happen in that area...Very tragic. It was really big news there at the time. This was NOT a robbery. Valerie was targeted. Everyone seemed to feel that way. After all this time, some info should be released. This needs to be solved. A lot of people around the case are dead, maybe the perpetrator as well.
What strikes me as odd is that absolutely noone from Valerie's personal background is mentioned in any form whatsoever. Obviously this was a targeted attack and you'd think the perpetrator would be somewhat familiar with the layout of the house. I don't know, given that we're talking about uper class folks I can easily imagine the police trying to cover for some wealthy family's offspring.
Here's an idea: since she was a twin, what if Sharon was the real intended target instead of Valerie? At the time Sharon was already engaged to Jay Rockefeller, and goodness knows the Rockefellers made a lot of enemies over the years, so......
I really think either a police officer or someone important was involved with Valerie's case due to the police really really not wanting to release that information. After 50 years, it is well beyond 'the right time' to release vital information to the public that could be used to solve the case. I have two theories regarding Valerie's case. The first one is what I've just said above really. A police officer or someone important was involved and it's been a mass cover up investigation ever since. The second theory that I have is that Valerie had an 'admirer/stalker' who killed her out of rage for the fact that she didn't reciprocate feelings. Perhaps this stalker could have first learned about Valerie because of her father's campaign and the person just escalated from there. That second theory seems some what plausible as the entry points within the house shows that he must have had some idea of who's rooms were where right? Anyway, just a few theories I've had after watching this video. Amazing video as always Gabbie!
In my humble opinion thousands and maybe even millions of eyes and ears are better than the few at this police department and that is worth more in this and many very cold cases. The police can always keep one or two things about the case from the public while gaining the benefit of having so many thinking through this case and even remembering a small thing from long ago that they may not have thought important at the time. Good job on your presentation!

Very interesting case. I immediately thought it sounded political particularly there being no motive. Either that or the stepmother knew more than she said?! I feel it's more mafia related but thats probably because it's near Chicago and as she wasn't assaulted, and the fact the police seemed to be a bit lax about it? I'm surprised to be honest, that there wasn't many theories tied to her father's political position myself, even if it was for a grudge against him by something he'd done to upset someone?! It was interesting that her twin sister went on to marry a Rockefeller incidentally!
Kenilworth is a massively wealthy area right in the lake...You'd have to know your way around those houses - clearly not random: These houses are huge, really huge... Seeing that her father was a politician, I think it's a hit. Her father owned something, didn't hold up his end of a deal, etc.
I'm an old guy, and I remember this crime very well. One thing that has never come to light was whether or not the killer left any DNA on the scene. With all the new sites that contain DNA info on the general public, that old DNA, if it exists, should be compared for a match or a near-match of a relative of the killer. As I understand it, Ancestor and 23 and others do work with law enforcement when necessary. I also remember that Gov. Although today I'm a Democrat, I did vote for Mr. Percy (R) as senator, Valerie's father. Such a good man and family. This story is vexing, and someone has to know something! (PS: Her twin sister is Sharon Percy Rockefeller - yes, she married into *that* family!)
One of the reasons I’m not a democrat anymore is the failure to control brutal crimes, so it struck me as ironic. But I’m not hostile toward people with different politics. One of the things clearly uniting us is our sympathy for victims of such crimes. I was led here by a comment on a video about the Moscow, Idaho college student murders. I never heard of this crime, and it’s so sad to me to think of crimes like these going unsolved. Possibly forever. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
Oh Jesus. I can't imagine the guilt her stepmother must have carried for not getting up when she heard everything. I think it's very strange the cops wouldn't release the info. I wonder if it was someone either part of law enforcement, or someone much higher up in society who's son did it, and they paid someone in law enforcement to make sure it's never solved. My prayers go out to the family💕
home invasions are honestly no joke. someone came into the old apartment i lived in last year with my boyfriend at the time, and they went through everything and stole a lot from us. Its very violating knowing that someone was able to get inside of your home where you feel the safest.
This is so sad that this poor girl’s case hasn’t been solved after so long. It’s so bizarre and I feel as though the politics would be the first thing I’d look into as motive? It’s all just pretty bizzare that the sole reason to break in was just to kill her. She was so beautiful, may she Rest In Peace. ❤️🙏🏻 I’d also like to enter the *Giveaway* I moved into a bit of a rough area some years ago in order to take care of my grandmother (90 this year!). I thought I was just being my paranoid self when I moved here but it’s proven to be very unsafe, unfortunately. Due to THREE different incidents that took place last year I no longer feel safe to walk my dogs even for a couple of blocks... which leaves me heartbroken because I adopted her just a year ago and she really loves walks /: This year alone there was a home invasion a block away from me and my neighbors across the street had their car broken into. Ok, so needless to say I’m PARANOID! And would love to have this little bit of home security. Thank you for this opportunity and also for always bringing would-be forgotten cases back into the light while being so thorough and empathetic about it. 💕 IG @tarynnm_ Good look to all who enter! 💙💙💙
Hi Gabby I may have read about Valerie Percy’s murder and cold case. I feel so sad and heartbroken to hear that her killer has not been found. She was a lovely young lady and very privileged. She had a sweet smile. I am grateful for her stepmother who was brave enough to open Valarie’s bedroom door and saw the killer with the blinding light, I know she must of been scared. I still wonder why Valerie was targeted. Anyway, Gabby sad cold case hope this will be solved one day.
For those of you who are worried about the Home Invasions statistics, most home invasions are not violent or very dangerous. It’s scary cause someone is in your house and your house is supposed to be safe, but most don’t end in violent crime. For example, someone snuck into my house in the middle of the night once and stole my mum’s purse, that was all, no poking around in rooms, just in then out and that is still technically a home invasion.
Someone knows something, obviously. There's just so many unanswered questions in this case. It's so scary how they just walked in, parents home and all and just killed her. I'm always so paranoid in my house especially at night, can't even sleep unless my bedroom door is locked and in my head I have all sorts of plans God forbid anyone did break in. Am I nuts or is this a common thing? I would love a chance to win that. I'll be 31 on May 31st and I'm like a paranoid teenager lol.
How unusual for the state police to hand back the file to the village after they failed to crack the case. It sounds like Sharon is more interested in preserving her privacy than solving the murder of her sister.
🚨🚨🚨🚨 Please do the case of Trudy Appleby she was also from Illinois but not the Windy City. She was abducted in Moline, IL and the case is still open it’s small town that gets no attention.
Love the sponsor, I am going to buy a few of these. I think at this point authorities should, if they want a resolution, ask for help. They don’t need a front page newspaper article, but there are other agencies that can investigate. The redacted file makes it pretty obvious that, at the very least, they believe that information in the files could be misinterpreted by someone not very familiar with the circumstances and they are set on not opening up that avenue to new eyes and potentially exposing themselves to accusations of some sort of impropriety or outright mishandling of the case. I suspect parties involved are still active in the community and they hope to spare them. As time goes on likely the whole chain of events will come to light.
It’s crazy to think that so many people are murdered and no one solves it. It breaks my heart a woman just starting out in life could so brutally be killed for no reason. I’d love a camera but I definitely don’t give out my email her. Just message me here if I were to win one!
Being a cold case of this length the police should give up all information about it. If they made mistakes own up to it. Ego or error is why they don't!
It is important to keep information private. If there is a killer out there still alive, you want information kept private that only the killer would know.
I honestly don’t have a problem with you doing sponsorships. I say good for you! This is your job. You need to pay the bills and there is nothing wrong with that! Also, I wish you were making some money off the coupon codes! It’s really no skin off my back and again, this is your job and there is nothing wrong with making money. Love your vids! Xox
Imo the cops are protecting someone. After all these years why wouldn't they release the documents. Any family acting as if they personally need to be protected at this point is beyond my comprehension
1st I wanna just say thank you for getting these places out the public So that families may get the Closure they desperately need to finding out what happened to their loved ones. I think there should be more channels like yours the give out information needed on cold cases Whether they are years old cold cases Or recently cold cases. Again I just wanted to say thank you for the against public service announcements I'm not sure what The wording is there but keep up the good work and helping Families get closer they need to to move on.You're in a beautifully amazing person for Doing the help that you do in solving these Case.
This case is a vexing one. I've often thought that Valerie's parents... in particular her mom.... knew exactly who the assailant was. And what his motive was. But chose to hide this knowledge, for some particular reason....
That is so shady. It sounds like they are trying to cover up 52 year old information? That sounds like they might be covering up for someone they know. I don't know. That could be way off. But that doesn't sound right.

Looks to me like her sister doesn’t WANT this solved. Maybe she knows who did it. Maybe she saw the person and is afraid? These people are old now, we grow consciences as we grow closer to the inevitable. I think they should release some of the info!
Wish I knew more about my grandma's murderer. He did it before, and I have no info about the prior offence. This was 1987 Kearns Utah. This destroyed my family, and my life filled with anxiety, and depression.
Darling, first off I want to thank you for your time and effort in producing your videos. I absolutely love them, and part of the reason for this is that your genuine interest and concern is readily apparent to me when viewing them. I just wanted to let you know that your comment about not having coming across an obvious political angle, take another look at the title of the book you referance in the video. Although I have not read this book myself the title clearly implies that her father had something to do with it so as to garner sympathy votes in his upcoming bid for a senatorial seat??? Just wanted to let you know my opinion regarding the political angle you alluded to. Again thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the genre
I wondered if there was a political motive as well. Since it’s been 50 years, maybe investigators should at least consider releasing the information and see if someone knows something.
You're right, Gabby. Internet sleuths have solved many crimes now. Tent Girl is probably the most famous one, solved by an amateur after 29 years. With all the sources of information available now, the more we need every able citizen to participate in research on unsolved crimes. It's simply a step up from coming forward with eyewitness identifications &/or inside information, should you know anything which could be of help. 🖥️
It’s not impossible, but it could’ve been a political rival of his. Sometimes bad people use someone’s children to hurt them. But I hope they are one day able to solve this. Much love Gabby.
Ummm! I am sure they checked CODIS even though this is such an old case. Even the Government declassifies info after 50-years. It sounds like the family may be embarrassed if they tell us what they redacted.
I can't wait to watch this, just have to take my daughter to school. I never miss your videos. You're a gem 💎❤️💖😍 Okay having watched this it seems because the two major suspects are dead it won't ever get solved. One of those two men were involved. It's very possible that it was politically motivated. Democratic rival..
I lived in Kenilworth 54 Kenilworth Ave . Not sure what the percy address was I was told it was across the street. Other suspects or at least one were protected from public scrutiny as anyone should be . Maybe helped by their families wealth and influence.
I suspect the reason for the secrecy is that Kenilworth is one of the wealthiest towns in the country and files are filled with investigative details about very prominent families
Of course, I believe they should share the evidence....maybe to just a few professional investigators to start, then the public, if nothing comes of it? My opinion...obviously, the guy that had the same weapon that was found in the Pond behind her home...was the weapon ever tested for DNA with pieces of skin, hair trapped in it? Such a sad case :(
It's tricky when it comes to a politician. Politicians are into very shady and it's weird that having so much power you would think he would of moved his connections.
Is it possible that police thought that the parents were in some sort responsible, but didnt have enough evidence, which is a reason why they didn't release the files. If they are - could make them lawyer up etc, if not - could destroy the fathers political career.
I think they should keep it a secret. There's always someone who comes forward with false and misleading information, either claiming to be the perpetrator or claiming to know who it is...I think, the less they know about the case, the more difficult it will be to mislead the authorities. The easier it will be for investigators to do their job.
ig @drinkport!! also its just frustrating how theres so little information out to the public but then i dont want the murderer to cover his tracks aaaaa
is berg also a english word? Im a little surprised now it's iceberg in english. In german it's Eisberg ^^ Has not much to do with the case but I wonder about it. I hope it's ok.

Just checked and she even named her daughter after her sister 😔
Your video got recommended to me today, I am subscribed but haven't watched you in a while, so glad that recommendations sent me here!
Please do a video about Barbara Gluekert, missing from Mt. Prospect, IL since 1976.
It's odd that Valerie's twin agrees with holding back so much information from the public. Perhaps a family member was involved? Great video though!
That thought has crossed my mind too!
I remember at the time hearing that it was the step mother
home invasions are honestly no joke. someone came into the old apartment i lived in last year with my boyfriend at the time, and they went through everything and stole a lot from us. Its very violating knowing that someone was able to get inside of your home where you feel the safest.
Yay another upload!!!!
This was literally the best part of my day today. Thank you
@@DarkAngel71180 I didn't even bother looking at the title I was just happy she had uploaded another video.
I’d also like to enter the *Giveaway* I moved into a bit of a rough area some years ago in order to take care of my grandmother (90 this year!). I thought I was just being my paranoid self when I moved here but it’s proven to be very unsafe, unfortunately.
Due to THREE different incidents that took place last year I no longer feel safe to walk my dogs even for a couple of blocks... which leaves me heartbroken because I adopted her just a year ago and she really loves walks /:
This year alone there was a home invasion a block away from me and my neighbors across the street had their car broken into.
Ok, so needless to say I’m PARANOID! And would love to have this little bit of home security.
Thank you for this opportunity and also for always bringing would-be forgotten cases back into the light while being so thorough and empathetic about it. 💕

Good look to all who enter!
Nothing like a new Gabby video to watch before bed in Ireland you would be known as a "legend" ❤️
I love learning about a case that I have never heard of at all. Nice work!!
Granted I grew up in the 90’s but I grew up in a town about 15 min north of Kenilworth and I had never heard of it. Unbelievable!
RIP Valerie Percy justice for her family 🦋🙏💗🙏💗💜
Great vid. It's sad it has never been solved as her Dad would of had connections - through police and possibly CIA, FBI 😟
Xox
Another fantastic, well researched video Gabby! You should have millions of subs by now. Thank you for covering these cold cases.
May she rest in peace. This is so sad and complex.
My gut tells me that this was politically motivated! The title of that book Sympathy votes really bugs me.
Queen bee yeah it’s making it all about her father and his politics, as if her life and achievements came second to that
This crossed my mind
This case is a vexing one. I've often thought that Valerie's parents... in particular her mom.... knew exactly who the assailant was. And what his motive was. But chose to hide this knowledge, for some particular reason....
That was her stepmom.
I'm glad you're trying to do stuff that saves people lives with this new safety device so it's okay .
That is so shady. It sounds like they are trying to cover up 52 year old information? That sounds like they might be covering up for someone they know. I don't know. That could be way off. But that doesn't sound right.
I understand that this was 1966, but I would think even then, that the purpose of a burglar alarm was to sound off DURING a break-in.
That's why I understood that it was 1966. Technology was different.
2:27 it starts, NO DISRESPECT Gabby love your videos
She's advertising a product that could be really useful. Why would you skip it?
@@muls9571 Without wanting to be disrespectful, it is of no use to people like me living in Europe.
@@vanessakiekeben9832 I live in Europe. The product is interesting, just because you live in Europe doesn't mean you can't watch an advert for something
No disrespect, but it was 2:26 Haha..
I was looking for a new lip liner by mac and saw your lips tonight and was so excited when I read what the lip liner was, I am wearing plain old spice with riveting rose on top and need a pick me up, as I hate the spice. So thanks for listing that, normally I don't talk about makeup and am all true crime or human remains but tonight I was so excited. xo ~christie groves
Love your videos, hi from the UK
share the information ! After all this time I don't see why they wont. Unless they are protecting someone or themselves.
I agree. They have something to hide, and the case will never be solved because of that.
Great show! Will keep watching!!
I wondered if there was a political motive as well. Since it’s been 50 years, maybe investigators should at least consider releasing the information and see if someone knows something.
Thank Gabby for sharing this story!✌️❤️
Please , do the case of Brenda Marie Gerow
Stefan Moise
I never heard about this case
You're a gem 💎❤️💖😍
Okay having watched this it seems because the two major suspects are dead it won't ever get solved. One of those two men were involved. It's very possible that it was politically motivated. Democratic rival..
The police are protecting someone.
Have you considered doing a vidoe on The Disappearance of Relisha Rudd.
Yay ! Another video !! ☺️
Keep the videos cominggg❤️ love you!
Seems the most likely suspect was that neighbor guy that ended up being shot by his wife.
Such a sad case :(
kaseytynefield thanks for doing a giveaway!!! Love youuu!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's tricky when it comes to a politician. Politicians are into very shady and it's weird that having so much power you would think he would of moved his connections.
Great video as always. Thank you for the opportunity to win. If I am the winner my email address would be the best way to reach me.
@@DarkAngel71180 , If I win I will privately give it to her :-)
Is it possible that police thought that the parents were in some sort responsible, but didnt have enough evidence, which is a reason why they didn't release the files. If they are - could make them lawyer up etc, if not - could destroy the fathers political career.
Do you have to be living in the states or is it a world wide giveaway x
Ugh love your channel
LOVEEE you! 💖
I,m looking forward to the colab with Amber , Caitlin etc.
Love your channel 💕
Oh and also I really do love you videos
It seems like the intruder knew the family i get the Erie feeling I think it is about time they reopen the case
Dam, this brings back memories of the “Martha Moxley” case. Politic, crap investigators, possible cover ups, creepy neighbors....
I'm wondering if the perpetrator would have killed more people in the house if the mother hadn't woke up and caught him in the act.
That is something to think about.
is berg also a english word? Im a little surprised now it's iceberg in english. In german it's Eisberg ^^ Has not much to do with the case but I wonder about it. I hope it's ok.
