hello sir just want to ask if it is normal on line 6 if i set a preset with 8th dotted delay but when crancked the mix knob on 8 or 10 it lose the delay time i will send you video demo please help me
I’m not sure about that one. Might depend on the delay type selected. Send me a link to a private (unlisted) RUclips video if you like. Happy to have a look for you.
Love the nicely grizzled tele tones here, great lick choices and wonderfully loose but bang on sense of groove. I bought the DL4 in Japan back around 2006-7, and when I finally started rigging more out of the box, I resurrected it and got onto the long path of pedal acquisition insanity. It sits now at the end of my chain. I love the looper on it and used it a lot a few years ago (that length of time is perfect for most improvisational type/experimental stuff), but the stereo and ping pong slaughter the stereo imaging in the Timeline! Huge!! Thank you!
Hi Chris, thanks for your comments. There’s a lot to be said for hanging onto gear and really getting to know it. And you’re right, this pedal acquisition thing is borderline insanity! 😆 Thanks for watching 🙏
Another master of the DL4 is Dave Knudson from Minus The Bear. Some of their songs are heavily reliant on that pedal! He does so many cool things with the looping feature its kinda mind blowing.
Alright, I’m gonna go listen to Minus The Bear. An ex-band mate of mine suggested I should listen to them. That was way back in maybe 2005? I never gave them a proper spin, but that’s all about to change! Cheers 🍻
Not just Minus the Bear, but his work in Botch was incredible too He played entire songs just off his DL4 and it was incredible. And not just one DL4, he uses like four on his pedalboard.
I had not heard of Botch until now. Just gave a couple of tracks a spin. I was not expecting that! Wow. Powerful stuff! And then there’s Afghamistam. What a sweet departure. 👌🏻
Glad you mentioned Bill Frisell. Though he can play anything it’s his mellow guitar playing that draws me in. Especially since he’s using this pedal a lot. He did a duet album with Jim Hall that’s genius.
@@LyndonWesleyMusic Jim Hall did a similar lp with Pat Methey. Best Fisell albums are Solo and Music Is. The song “Rambler” is incredible and he uses this old POS ZOOM fx box. It has one awesome setting that he uses. It’s so good. Enjoy!
Yes that’s true. I love tape delays and Echorec styled delays and also the multi head units. Most digital versions of these sound great. Especially with a little bit of drive or clean boost going into them. 👍🏻 You’re right, they never get old.
You can still by the Line 6 adapter for them. I've done that before. More recently I just make sure I have an isolated power supply that can power the DL4 along with my other pedals. The Pedal Power line of power supplies do a great job.
Hi Alberto, thanks mate! I run all my pedals in front of the amp. For whatever reason I love the sound of delays into the amp. Occasionally in the studio I’ve used an amps FX loop but other than that it’s in front of the amp for me.
Hi Neil, not easily no. You can set it to rhythmic delay and experiment by setting the delay time knob to 8th notes then tapping in a tempo until you hear the dotted eighth effect. But I don’t do that. As for the dual delay, you can only have one delay preset on at a time 😕 If you like the sounds in the DL4 but need more functionality, then the M9 is the thing to get. It handles subdivisions easily and you can run three delays at once if you wanted to! So it is more practical and has most of the DL4 legacy sounds plus a few extra (including ‘dry through’) 👍🏻
Glad to watch this video, im looking for some inspirational ideas on youtube, love my dl4, and love bill frisell, such an amazing artist, this land is a nice album, nice tones!
Hey there! Thanks for watching and for your kind words. Bill Frisell has this incredible ability to de-stress and relax me. Something about his demeanor as much as his note choices. I’m loading This Land into Spotify to listen to on the way home. Thanks for the recommendation!
Hi Eric :) Yes! That could be on the cards for sure. There’s a lot to like about the Echo Park. In particular, the ability to switch between tape/digital/analogue is easy and immediately offers a whole new identity to each delay. I’m digging it so far!
The foot switch on the far right is tap tempo. You can use this in real time and then save the new tempo for individual presets. This means each preset can have its own tempo.
I’ll look into this for you. I know that each previous loop is quieter than the last (the last loop/layer always being the most prominent) but I don’t think that’s what you’re asking. As soon as this lockdown is over and I’m back at the studio I’ll check it out.
The DL4 lets you replay a loop at 1/2 speed. Also, if you record it at 1/2 speed and play back at normal speed it will sound sped up & higher pitched by an octave. I was trying that function out but I’m not very good at it! But I’m not sure that’s what you were referring to? 🤔
The Kemper is incredible. I haven’t delved deep into it yet and I’m still learning how to best use it. But yeah, you probably could do it all inside the Kemper. The reverbs and delays are known to be world class and they sound great to me.
@@LyndonWesleyMusic I sold off a couple of my Strymon pedals (Timeline & Mobius) because the Kempers effects did the job. I do enjoy oddball gain pedals in front of it and a Yamaha UD Stomp in the effects loop, but I rarely even turn on my RE-201 as the fake tape delay in the Kemper sounds just fine.
It's my favorite looper. I rarely even remember that it does other stuff. I have the original. I need to do the switch mod. Uggh. I hate it that you keep saying my favorite guitar player's name incorrectly. I guess it has something to with your English or NZ accent or whichever country in the Soviet Union you're from :) Check out the album In Line by Frisell. It was made way before the Dl4 when he was still using the EH 16 Second Delay, which can be heard on many of his early recordings. He offered to buy one for a friend in the early 90s. After a show, my friend said to him:" I have one of those EXHX 16ssuppose Bill was very aware of that
Thanks for watching and sorry for my mispronunciation! Yes, I'll blame it on my Soviet accent. Haha :) I'm listening to In Line at the moment and really enjoying it. Thanks for the recommendation.
I used these pedals for various ‘dirty’ sounds: Ulbrick Megalodon (boost/light gain) JHS AT (Marshall style distortion) TMG Drhive (amp like overdrive) Plus the TC Mini HOF for reverb and the Demeter Tremulator for tremolo. All the delays were out of the DL4.
How does the classic DL4 fare 20 years after it was first released? Do you think it still holds up?
hello sir just want to ask if it is normal on line 6 if i set a preset with 8th dotted delay but when crancked the mix knob on 8 or 10 it lose the delay time i will send you video demo please help me
please help me to identify if my line 6 dl 4 is broken or it is normal
I’m not sure about that one. Might depend on the delay type selected. Send me a link to a private (unlisted) RUclips video if you like. Happy to have a look for you.

Just got one. What. Fantastic effect delay is. Aside from reverb,it's my favorite
Yes I think delay would be my desert island pedal.
Been using one for the last 15 years..can’t go wrong with the DL4! Great video 👍
Yes, thanks Trevor. And here’s to another 15 years!

*DL4 units are still expensive even after 20 years, which is a testament to their longevity.*
Yeah that’s true. Brand new in Australia they’re still over $500. That’s some serious coin!
I can buy one online rn for $100 American. Should I?

The MKII looks so tempting, includes reverbs too! Some incredible sounding classic delays and the enclosure is a tiny bit smaller
I haven't had a chance to try it but honestly, the Line 6 gear has been great for a long time now. Reverbs on a DL4 would be an amazing addition!
Gorgeous playing there my friend. Beautiful stuff, great video
Thank you. Thanks for watching. More vids coming soon :)
Awesome demo! Used one a few years back, but now have to dig in again. Cheers!
Thanks! Yes, the DL4 is an inspiration machine :)
Earned a sub from me. It’s 2024 and I’m about to add this to my fx loop.
Guitar playing was awesome, now I’m inspired
Thanks Michael. You’re very kind. 🙏
Parabéns pelo vídeo 👏👏👏 acabei de comprar um e estou muito feliz com a escolha.
Hey thanks for watching and enjoy your new pedal!!
Delays haven't changed that much and this still sounds amazing.. a memory man does a tape echo they never get old these types

Your playing in loop mode is 🔥. Sounded really good.
Thank you :) 🙏 Glad you liked it. Have a great week!
Am I right to assume that this device is capable of performing reverse reverbs?
Reverse Delay yes. I'm told the new versions have Reverb also, but whether any can be reversed I'm not sure.
I think Buckethead uses one of these along with the other 3 or 4 Line 6 effects that look similar to this.
Oh cool. Yes, I read that he uses the FM4.
Hi guy. its nice! pls can u help me? what best adapter for DL4 could I buy? THX!

Hello great video! I have a M13 which has the same delays. I would like to know if you use this pedal in front of the amp or in the loop?
Hi Alberto, thanks mate! I run all my pedals in front of the amp. For whatever reason I love the sound of delays into the amp. Occasionally in the studio I’ve used an amps FX loop but other than that it’s in front of the amp for me.
Great tones! Thanks

Does it do dotted 8ths and Brian May's dual delay?
Hi Neil, not easily no. You can set it to rhythmic delay and experiment by setting the delay time knob to 8th notes then tapping in a tempo until you hear the dotted eighth effect. sweet tones and tasty playing my friend!
Howdy Phil! Cheers man. Hope you’re well 👍🏻
I’m trying to use the MK2 tap tempo without the time stretch effect whenever I’m changing the tempo. Like it was in the old DL4. Please help!
Oh that would be so frustrating! I haven't tried the new version yet.

A very interesting review. Next you can offer a comparison with the "Echo Park"... :) Cheers!
Hi Eric :) Yes! That could be on the cards for sure. There’s a lot to like about the Echo Park. In particular, the ability to switch between tape/digital/analogue is easy and immediately offers a whole new identity to each delay. I’m digging it so far!
@@LyndonWesleyMusic That would be good. I never realised until recently that the Echo Park has slightly different algorithms.
Do the dl4 could have stereo dual discrete processing?
If I understand you correctly, I don’t think it does. I believe dual processing came much later to guitar pedals.
Nels Cline from Wilco is also a DL4 master!
Yes! You are absolutely right. The Rig Rundown with him was fascinating. What a player👌🏻. Thanks for reminding me. 😎
I noticed that the 3 stomp switch of line6 dl4 changes the rate of the delay, is it true?
The foot switch on the far right is tap tempo. You can use this in real time and then save the new tempo for individual presets. This means each preset can have its own tempo.
@@LyndonWesleyMusic thank you so much
Why is the loop quieter than the first take? I'll play a measure and loop and it's not as loud. Any thoughts? Remedies? Anyone?
I’ll look into this for you. I know that each previous loop is quieter than the last (the last loop/layer always being the most prominent) but I don’t think that’s what you’re asking. As soon as this lockdown is over and I’m back at the studio I’ll check it out.
Will it do Surf guitar?
Yep. You can certainly dial in short delay times to create that effect. 👍🏻
Don't forget John Frusciante!
Anyway great video - I've got one of these on the way and I'm excited!
I LOVE John Frusciante! That’s a massive oversight on my part.
Thanks mate. Enjoy the pedal when it arrives. It’s still my favourite delay pedal :)

I lost it at 23 min. Does it make sense there?

For real this was the first guitar delay pedal with tap tempo?!
The first I'm aware of. There may have been a rack unit with tap delay that preceded the DL4 but as far as pedals go I think the DL4 was the first.
I'm not sure if you are playing whit any other effects or not...?🤔
I used these pedals for various ‘dirty’ sounds:
Ulbrick Megalodon (boost/light gain)
JHS AT (Marshall style distortion)
TMG Drhive (amp like overdrive)
Plus the TC Mini HOF for reverb and the Demeter Tremulator for tremolo. All the delays were out of the DL4.
