    Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress are the definition of animated masterpieces from Japan

    • @haniwadog
      @haniwadog 5 лет назад +2

      Those movies are like two sides of the same coin. In Perfect Blue obsession becomes a negative thing that the protagonist wants to avoid, but in Millennium Actress it's quite a romantic obsession about finding someone we actually want in our life. Kon was surprisingly good at showing a female star's perspective on these things

    YES!!! I've been religiously recommending this movie to anyone who will listen and watch for at least a few years now. It needs this kind of attention, especially considering this was the inspiration for Black Swan. I don't want people to forget about this film. Honestly, I don't.
    It's worth every minute of your time, as it is my favorite animated thriller, period. But mind you, it is not for the faint of heart, as the film has scenes of explicit physical and sexual violence.
    Overall, to see Tristan cover this is such a treat for me. As we go further into the digital age, I suspect that the themes of identity being stolen and reinvented, and of the detriments of what we now know as stan-culture will only become more relevant.

    Satoshi Kon was an absolute genius. I've spent the last few Decembers marathoning all five of his films, as well as his series, Paranoia Agent and it's become a tradition that I look forward to all year. One small nitpick: At 8:03 you say "Kon furthers on this concept with both of his later films", referring to characters living a double life. He made 3 features length films and a short film after Perfect Blue. Granted, Ohayo doesn't have a character who is living a double life, but that concept is explored in another way in Tokyo Godfathers through Gin and Sachiko. Not to mention that Paranoia Agent is all about characters living double lives. The way you worded that sentence not only misses that point but also suggests that Tokyo Godfathers and Ohayo don't exist.

    I might watch this actually. Was never an idol fan or the culture, to me it always seemed like a very disgusting thing since the idols are basicly tools for the managers to make money. Inspiring people and whatnot is all bs in my eyes. Idol shows usually make it look like being an idol is a hard but very worthile thing which feels a bit of a brainwashing for me. Similar things can be said about a lot of entertainment business but I don't know, I think there is a difference between the 2. The only Idol show so far that got my interest was zombieland saga and in all honesty the idol stuff was my least fav part of that show, the rest was great though.
    That being said this showing a darker, more realistic part of the culture is interesting.

    I think perfect blue should get a remake animated or live action would be great although you could make some modern day adjustment s or it could stay in the same time.

    Everyone should also read his work "Opus" after going through the rest. It feels like another of his films while taking full advantage of a different medium. Even unfinished, it's still a fantastic work.

    "Stan" culture is the closest I can think of as an equivalent to idol culture. I can see how the extremes of that can go into Perfect Blue.

    Saw Perfect Blue years ago and loved it. But more importantly, when I saw this video in my subscriptions my thought process was "Oh, Arkada's doing a Perfect Blue review. Great movie. Wait, why's he doing that one now? Unless...... (checks online) THANK THE LORD PERFECT BLUE IS FINALLY BEEN RERELEASED HALLE-FREAKIN-LUJAH"
    Seriously, I'm just so glad it's getting a re-release. Now if we can get the same for the rest of Satoshi Kon's work.....

    I watched this going on twenty years ago when a friend loaned it to me on (I think) VHS. I really liked how mind bending the movie was, because at that time the extent of my experience with anime was mostly centered around what I saw on Toonami after school. That was around the same time that I watched Armitage the third (loaned to me by the same friend).
