I'm 53 now and disabled but the funnest session I ever had (I've surfed in 3 different oceans within a week at one point in my late 20's) was at my home break of Captiva island on a small waist to chest high swell with a few shoulder to head high sets every 30 minutes or so and breaking literally a few yards off dry beach ! Epic good times !

I grew up boogien my whole life with 30yrs of shorebreak waves, Seal, Laguna, Aliso, Wedge, so this was very similar. I love heavy shorebreak! It is a blast, and sharpins your tube riding skills like nothing else. Those quick slabby hollow drops you had really speaks volumes on your repertoire of tube riding ability! Love your content! As a fellow goofy footed east coast guy this brings back vivid memories of a session I scored 20 or so years ago at a fickle break at the southern tip of NJ. Long before the cams and phones. We took the 2 hour trip south on a hunch and it was mind blowing. Very few people, unbelievably perfect reeling head high left barrels with pretty much a dry paddle out because the swell angle was so insane. I've been waiting 20 years for it to happen again at the same spot and I have yet to see it. I love your content Mr. Barley.
I grew up surfing CB, WB, Masonboro, Hatteras, etc., back in the 70s, 80s and early 90s...seeing these vids makes me jones to be back in those NC barrels! I live in the interior west now and have not surfed since 2005.

Awesome story about and how he pulled back during that contest and regretted it but used the experience to change his mindset from there forward. Even cooler how he told his son Mason that story to help him with his surfing! What a great Dad!

I've been surfing many many years and being 6'- 6" can recall just about every good Tube . A couple of days after watching the tutorial I paddled out (southern outerbanks) Cape Lookout. It was well overhead 3 people out including myself. Ate the first Rt. Paddled back out and repositioned myself just behind the peak a little. Thinking about what you had said. Dug hard for the next set, wallah!!! Smoken long right . Got barreled more in the next two days than I had in the last 30 years. Thanks man. Still hope to cross your path one day. On land that is. Lol.
