I have fished this on the flats in Tampa day for over 20 years. When the water is flat, this drive the seatrout and ladyfish crazy. Coldest temp was about 48 degrees air temp and got into a school of ladyfish. There were about 8 of us and we got strikes and hookups on just about every cast for a few hours until we ran out of flies. Best day ever
Thanks for sharing this, Tom, it really means a lot! The Gurgler is a winner for me, no doubt. If you are able to share this video with friends, that would keep this going and help others. Thanks! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
I had to go way back in your archives for this one Tim, but I'm glad I did! I particularly appreciated the fishing tips at the end. Well said my friend. 🙂
I met Jack years ago in Marlboro Ma. talked with him for a while he definitely knew what he was talking about and he was an interesting character kind of a nut but a lovable nut. Nice tie Tim keep them coming!
You're welcome, Jim, and thanks for the kind words. Feel free to check out my other videos for help/ideas, and be sure to let me know if you have any questions. Tim
Hey Tim - nice tie! I fish smallmouth bass in shallow rivers and find that the subtle Gurgler is often more effective than a loud Popper. Usually fish them dead drift with small strips and wiggles to make them struggle but when I see minnows jumping I will go with a white/silver Gurgler and fish it fast. I tie most of my Gurglers on #12 or #10 3x long curved hooks with a soft tail of marabou, rabbit or fox fur the same color as the foam body. I like a contrasting color for the belly and will typically use a rabbit fur dubbing loop (fur and guard hairs cut from a zonker strip) with a bit of flash added and will usually add a couple of hook-length rubber legs. Favorite colors are black/orange belly; white/silver belly; green/white belly and chartreuse/yellow belly. I have seen bass hang under the fly and examine it closely - flies the soft rabbit fur belly are usually taken without hesitation where gaudy flies are often refused. Fishing a Gurgler on a sinking line is very effective (same way to fish Boobie flies) when the fish are hanging close to the bottom. I use longer/larger skulpin/darter colored Gurglers in the lake and you never know what is going to hit them - catch a lot of nice bass and walleye on them with a short strip-pause retrieve. A great fly from Jack Gartside - thanks for the video Tim! Hank
Wow, so much information here, Hank...you better start making videos and sharing some of this stuff! Seriously, I appreciate your thoughtful comments, as we all benefit from these suggestions. Thanks for taking some time to share your knowledge. Tim
Thanks for giving me some more instructions on using this for large mouth. Like fishing with a sinking line, never thought to do what you explained here
I have found english perch love the black gurgler with black marabou tail rubber legs and a purple cactus chenile body stripped in 1ft increments . Trouble is keeping the small fish away .
Whoa, very cool comment, Peter, and thanks for mentioning that. I know exactly what you mean with the smaller fish! Are you able to enlarge the pattern, which then may only attract larger fish? Thanks for taking a moment to comment. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Can u tell me why i have such a time keeping my hooks from coming loose from body of bait where it be wood or foam I have used super glue epoxy and it never stay in place on lure I see these guys making their lure i do nothing different than them but i have always had a problem keep baits from turning on hook any any advice would be a big help sorry such a long text
Jack Gartside was one hell of a character, an extremely innovative flytyer, an expert flyfisher for any fish that swims, a cat lover, a man with a slightly twisted sense of humour. Basically, my idea of a renaissance man.
Going try these for the perch in the UK too. Never considered these before as floating flies are rarely the best method for perch, but on a slow sinking line they should do the business. Thanks.
Hey Tim, nice to see you tying again. I wondered how your son is coming along with fishing with dad and mom? If my question is too personal just say so. I could have emailed you privately. I Like the fly, I have read Jack's books and am a regular customer of the supplies sold on his site. All the best to you and the family. Also, say hi to uncle John for me. You should try the different secret stuff to do the body. It comes in great colors now. Sean
Hi Sean, and thanks for the comments. I haven't heard from you in awhile, and all is great with our son. He's been out fishing and hiking with us, and is an absolute blessing. I'll pass on the hello to my uncle, too. Glad to know you like the materials made famous by Mr. Gartside, as there are some great ones. Al the best to you, and I hope all is well on your end. Tim
Thank you for such kind words, as I never had the opportunity to meet Jack...but heard some incredible stories about him! If you've met Mr. Gartside, shoot me an email, as I'd love to learn more about him: tcammisa@gmail.com Thanks again for the comment. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
That's a tricky one, as I haven't used these in Canada for Grayling. Personally, I would have an assortment, from #6 to #14, and #10 seems to be a great all-around size for the Gurgler. Good luck, and let me know how they work for you! You can send any pics to: tcammisa@gmail.com Thanks! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
There is not a set thickness, as it varies based on hook size and how high you want the pattern to sit in/on the water. I prefer to live in the 2mm - 4mm range of closed-cell foam. Thanks for checking. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Don't forget to mention that this fly shouldnt be fished during cold weather. If you like going out in the winter, than you probably wouldnt want to fish this fly. This information only applies in freshwater though, I'm not sure how the gurgler will work in saltwater during the winter. Great vid tho
Thanks for taking a moment to comment, and it sounds like this is a pattern you're familiar with. Have you fished it in the winter with no success? Tim

Hi Mark, and they definitely can, depending on the length. Utilizing a Euro nymph leader and setup, this has happened rarely in the past couple of seasons. Thanks for the comment. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Thanks for the tutorial. Nice tie. I put a couple together and am going to try them tonight. I'll let you know how they do for me.....:)
I hope you have got some fish on these, Dennis! Thanks for the feedback and taking the time to watch my video. Tim
No surface activity tonight. I did get one hit but I missed him. Next time!
I hope so!
Love this one! was looking for a good video. the perch in the Netherlands seem to like these as a topwater or on a intermediate line! thnx!
