James May reviews his own cars - Tesla Model S vs Toyota Mirai

- James May has bought two electric cars this year and they're at two very different ends of the EV scale. On one side, we have the incredibly quick Tesla Model S 100D, and on the other we have the Prius-based (and very comfortable) Toyota Mirai. Which one does he think will be the future? Let's find out!

James had some good points but i agree with James.
Naw. I gotta go with James on this one. Though I will admit that James' arguments were compelling.
How can you agree with James when James is so obviously more correct
I can't keep up with the Jameses anyway...
Oh Jameses... Hydrogen scares me too.
James made an amazing point on both but James was the most right and I agree with James, but also with James. But James was right and I agree

Nice nouns I must agree. They are a little in the snoop dog wannabe category. Then again that’s what makes them funny. May paying homage to snoop dogs muse. Get along little doggies.

Sad. Watching James argue with himself is more entertaining than new Topgear (apart from Chris Harris)
James May has more interesting content in his hand than all of new top gear has

I feel like watching this made me realise, as much as I love him, I've probably underappreciated how necessary James was to the success of the TG/GT trio. Really entertaining, creative, funny, and I learnt quite a bit.
Funny I had the same. Since I have been watching James solo lately I appreciate him more. He is actually a lot more natural when he works alone than the others are. I love all of them, but James is the only one who can make a dull subject interesting. I never thought I would watch a grown man make a sandwich for 20 minutes.
Even though James is the "quiet" one of the trio, he is the one that brought the show back to the ground and not spiralling out of control.
@@HappyWoWer it's the reason that Top Gear America didn't work. I personally really like the three of them, but they lack the one person that brings everyone back to reality instead of everyone trying to out do each other.
This is literally just like a Grand Tour episode. But for free, and no censoring. Love it
and no hamster to crash the electric car.
Was the grand tour censored? Guess I didn't notice.
@@maereanm That's what scares me the most about electric cars. Lithium is a highly active chemical, merely having it exposed to air is enough for it to ignite. And the electric car Hammond crashed burned spectacularly. I don't even know how he got out of it alive!
However, having a highly flammable gas under the pressure of 700 Bar in your car is equally scary. What if it depressurizes? Even without catching fire it could possibly do some major damage to the car.
The debate at the end was weirdly entertaining...
They both had very good points tbf
And informative.

The hydrogen was bloody expensive, more than 3x the price of the electricity but got about 1.5x the mileage! They’d not only need to improve the infrastructure they’d need to get a lot cheaper to refuel. Did James tell James how many miles total he could travel in the cars?

I do wonder about overpressure events if the equipment is damaged. I could see a problem if vandals damage the connectors or if they wear out too much over time, still those engineering problems are very solvable. I personally think BEVs make since for cars and HFC makes sense for ships and planes, but I can see a future if battery technology improves enough to where the KWH/KG ratio becomes closer to gas where batteries could start to be used in planes. Maybe a mix of solid state batteries in series and super capacitors?? I can't wait to see what the future holds!
Problem with electric planes is that propellers can never be as fast as jets. We need combustion, which is why hydrogen powered jets are the future.

Gotta love James May! When I was a kid I used to think Jeza and the Hamster were the cool ones but as a grown-up, I've come to appreciate James a lot more whist cringing at the other two.
Well, gotta admit, 7-year-old me like those 2. They're just humorous. But when I want to chill a bit I come and watch James .
Well the other 2 have just become parodies of themselves. It's all been done, they just re-hash it year after year. In the early years of Top Gear, they were all 3 very cool and very funny.
FreihEitner Totally agree, watching the trio from early Top Gear to the later seasons (or Gran Tour), their dynamic and personalities just feel way more forced and unnatural.

He's probably going to say "This is brilliant, but I like this"
James is not Jeremy, so I doubt it
@Lauritz Sivertsen I'm just tryna make a reference to top gear but ok
When you told me that the Toyota was fueled by hydrogen my first thought was of the Hindenburg. My second point was if I was a rich man ( think fiddler on the roof ) I would own a Tesla. For now, my 20 year old Volvo is still running great. Love you show.
One slight error: batteries charge faster the less full they are. The fact that the station was pretty full was only part of the problem when it came to charge speed. Pulling into the supercharger with a relatively high state of charge was also a contributing factor. I wouldn’t be surprised if the latter was actually the main culprit.
£14.40 for 70 miles is good? That's 21p per mile. The Tesla was 8p per mile. I ran my diesel numbers and at 55mpg and £1.25/L that's 10p per mile. £14.40 for 70 miles is absolute fuelcells.
was thinking the same
Did he not mean 70 miles of driving & battery charging that equals god knows what ?
I agree with you, 100%, but I do think when he said "good" he was referring to 70 miles in 2 minutes vs 45 miles in 15 minutes.
He charged at a Supercharger the equivalent of paying "Motorway prices" for fuel. A home charger can deliver the same power for 20-25% of the cost (5p per kWh compared to the Supercharger's 24p kWh). When you fill up at home (aware not everyone has a driveway) every night the cost dramatically reduces, you only pay if you need a "top up" that day.
What type of diesel car running 55mpg can compete with the performance Tesla has to offer.
James May arguing with himself at the end was great.
The debate at the end, pure gold! I wish I had friends with whom I can speak about this arguments and imagine some sort of a solution.
That back and forth was brilliant!!!
“No good tv shows on netflix” Good Top Gear bash that😂

@@WUZLE Top Gear is on Netflix and has been on it for a while now. Which country are you in?
The US. Neither Netflix nor Amazon Prime had Top Gear as of two months ago. The last remnant was James May's Cars of the People and it ultimately went pay only as well. Ralph Hardwick yeh hydrogen costs a fortune
if you manage to buy it, yes it costs a lot.
keep in mind that for 1kg you need around 40kw of energy
dallatorretdu it has to be made transported and then cooled and compressed, for normal cars it makes not sense as far as I can see and with fast charge getting faster and faster
@@elliottslab the technology to create it, store it etc will get better. The real factors are will the cost and environmental impact associated with hydrogen engines be better or worse than electric ones, considering the power still has to be made from somewhere, coal, gas, nuclear, hydroelectric etc, as well as lithium mining and all that other jazz to make the batteries, which need to be replaced after a decade or so currently. Either hydrogen or pure electric will be the future, but it's too early to say at the moment I think, electric is winning at the moment, simply because it is much easier to achieve.
Loose Goose not hydrogen engines but fuel cells to make electricity, and there are physics limits with density of hydrogen storage it being such a small Element I nearly always leaks, As far as I can see the battery’s are going to beat it before hydrogen really even gets off the ground

-The emissions are far lower than any petrol or diesel powered vehicle
-The loss of Horsepower is noticeable at great engine capacities.
