Tracking Florida Caves! (Where do they go?)

  • In this exciting cave diving episode, Jonathan and Cameraman Todd take a transmitter into a cave so that Zach-of-all-trades and Cameraman Zach can follow them above to see where the cave goes. This interesting experiment demonstrates how the aquifer in Florida stretches for miles underneath farms, roads and even houses. It also demonstrates how the aquifer can be affected by things above it.
This episode is an homage to our friend, legendary cave explorer Wes Skiles. You can watch the original film, WATER'S JOURNEY on which this episode is based:
    • Water's Journey: Hidde...
WARNING! Cave Diving is extremely dangerous and should only be undertaken by divers with the proper equipment and training. This video is for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered “instructional” in any way. The dive team that produced this video is fully cave certified with years of experience.

Grew up in Melbourne Fla in the 60's.....and my father knew the astronauts through his business, and they would go diving in Silver Springs. I just remember as a little girl the stories he would tell when he came home. On those speed boats, too.......and crashed one time, and my mother woke us up to go get them. Fascinating what you are doing, and providing much needed info on the aquifers. More Springs, etc in Fla than anywhere. Texas, and the Ogallala.....

Great job. Would love to see a map of where the aquifer went on a road map or a satellite map that shows the businesses it went under. You know the whole route. That would be cool to see. Thanks for doing this one. You made a great point about the cow waste in relationship to the murkiness of the water underneath. So basically if the farm house had a well that tapped into that aquifer it would be unhealthy to drink because it would be contaminated

Awesome that you got certified, always keep that curious and exploratory spirit!
The part of the cave where they encountered the murky water was actually probably a section of the Nicholson tunnel that tends to retain tannic water from the river, which is very interested for its own set of geophysical reasons even though it’s not related to nitrate pollution (definitely a huge problem in the area).
Unfortunately it seems the majority of the surface filming fir this episode was just fake, the cave system at peacock does pass under one road (although not in the area this was filmed) but it seems they took some major artistic liberties to better illustrate their point.

They did something similar for the documentary "Underground Eiger" in the 80s... They even had full radio communication to the surface somehow... Definitely worth a watch if you like cave diving

Had my major back surgery 6 weeks ago. I'm just starting to feel like watching various again. Not an easy surgery to have @ all.

Hey Zackie, i pulled a muscle in my back a while ago and the recovery has taken a lot longer than I expected. Certainly not anything comparable to your need for surgery, but I understand how debilitating back pain can be. Wishing you a speedy recovery my friend!

This is so cool. I'm ready to get cave certified now. It'd be cool if you could combine the bearing and depth information from your dive computer, then all you would need is a way to measure distance and you could use software to visualize a path. You could then overlay that on a map and get a really deep understanding of where the aquifer is.

It's so interesting that just a few feet below the local supermarket is an aquifer - and people (generally) don't even know!

You would be surprised....they have been exploring every hole in the ground since the advent of scuba. I don't know of a single unexplored cave. That isn't to say that there aren't some left on private property...but good luck finding them and getting permission!
