- On this episode of Board To Death, Arianna Powell, educator, solo artist, session, and touring guitarist, has worked with Halsey, Black Eyed Peas, Chris Brown, Dua Lipa, and Olivia Rodrigo takes us on a deep dive through her very tidy pedalboard featuring several EQD delights. Playing her wonderfully sonorous Gibson SG, the versatile Duquesne U grad talks about the importance of maintaining note clarity for the jazz-infused "big chords" she favors. Powell begins with the Hoof, which she uses as her base fuzz sound, and occasionally with her EXH POG 2 to simulate a synth bass and "make a song sound a lot bigger."
Powell uses four reverb/delay pedals. The Avalanche Run "is probably my all-time favorite pedal; I use this on everything," she says. The EQD stereo delay and reverb pedal is used in Powell's solo music and featured in the stripped-down versions of several songs featured on the deluxe edition of Halsey's "Manic" album for its timeless and warm sound. She also praises the Afterneath she uses for "space" and "cool vibe."
Chorus is another mainstay on her studio and touring board. When she makes loops for other artists and producers, Powell says that she enjoys the "animated and different" SeaMachine for its ability to nail subtle or downright "kooky" chorus sounds. The "PlayStation area" is the Spatial Delivery envelope filter she uses for funky auto-wah sounds or psychedelic lines in her board's wildcard spot. "It's one of those famous EarthQuaker pedals that kind of has a mind of its own that I really like.

Man, her voice leading is *killer*. It first hit me in that "organ-ish" segment, and then just kept hitting me. Such respect.
Yeah - she is clearly an exceptional musician. She commands enormous respect without being ostentatious at all, which is especially impressive.
That organ sound was pretty cool
Agreed, that organ tone was killer
KILLER is the word that I was thinking also. I really would rather hear her with a more stripped down sound, but I guess it's actually Humble of her to allow all of the processing of her sound put her pure sound and playing sort of in the background
What a player she is. Her style is so mellow and elegant, yet punchy and aggressive when needed. A very gifted musician, if you ask me.
I'm thoroughly impressed with how well she knows her setup and her gear -- like the back of her hand, for real. Awesome.
Very rarely does someone manage to sound this musical to me with every element of a big board. Arianna has a lot of stuff going on but none of it seems superfluous the way that she uses it. She's really a terrific musician.
yep!
THE BEST contemporary guitarist in the main light and such a fresh voice in the world of jazz guitarists. All of her renditions are super informed and emotional. Her IG is full of her renditions and originals and some have literally brought me to tears. Top 3 favorite guitarists and a huge inspiration for me.
One of the most lyrical players out there. Massive talent.
I could listen to her noodle amazing musical bits and ideas all day. Great stuff.
Glad I watched all the way through. That filter patch at the end was absolutely killer. What a great player. I love seeing musicians who really know their tools.
Killer player with a great understanding of the application of what she has on her board.
Terrific chord voicing knowledge-very inspiring.
This is the best pedal demo video I've ever seen, please feature her more often
I watched this once to see what pedals she has and to validate my GAS. I watched it again to watch how her fingers move. I watched it again to try to play along. And I've kept on watching it over and over and over. She's just so damn good!
Some lovely chord progressions there
I don't know who Halsey is, but Arianna is a player's player. Absolute talent as a guitarist and an artist's imagination she applies to her playing ability. 1,000% utmost respect.
I'm new to Arianna, but thoroughly impressed by her playing and her demeanor. It's great how she has mastered the pedal board and its intricacies, but if you've ever seen her in the Fender Squier Sonic demo videos, you soon realize that she also plays absolutely beautifully without a lot of effects. Her fingerstyle compositions will tug at your heartstrings.
super cool the variety of tones/sounds she gets out of that. I feel like she could jump in anywhere and play anything.
100% on the Avalanche Run reverb...best I've ever used...it's so perfectly dreamy
Arianna is an amazing guitarist!!
Absolutely beautiful playing. And a clearly deep understanding of how to get fantastic, diverse tones from all of these pedals. I hear some gospel/hymn influenced voice leading and incredible touch on every note. Thank you!
I can listen to her play for hours! Amazing!
Incredible player and a very versatile rig.
I started watching this video having no idea that I was going to be mesmerized for the next 12 minutes and 20 seconds. This was so amazing and maybe even strangely calming.
I know nothing about guitars but got here after seeing her perform for Olivia Rodrigo. I especially like her playing for "Deja Vu".
Thank you very much for your interest in Arianna's playing and for stopping by!
@@EarthQuakerDevices Thank you for the welcome! I was also curious what she was tapping with her foot during that video and several others. Now I know, and it's always nice to know something new.
We need more Ariannas in this world
Amazingly precise playing!
I’ve had my eyes on that spatial delivery. I love every other EQD I have so I imagine I’d love that one too.
Great playing and sounds. Well done
I think I need a Spatial Delivery now. That was rad. Thanks for the cool walkthrough!
The Spatial Delivery sounded particularly awesome . Great representation of Great Pedals .
such good taste with chords
Thanks for listening
Amazing tone. That spatial pedal was trippy.
So beautiful i love it - a must have it
She’s fantastic
She is Awesome !
Killer board and licks. Tone is perfect.
Yo yo this is the best exploration of sound and pedals that I've come across in a minute. Real real musician definitely going to keep up on you and subscribe. Peace ✌🏾
Killin’ it, Arianna 🔥
I love it! Digging the slot to experiment with pedals, I feel like for its a great way to keep the board mostly familiar but try out different stuff to inspire, but you said that way better.
She’s so good it’s unreal
Really though
That SG is so cool!
Fantastic playing Arianna. Tasty riffs, tasty board
Absolute dream guitar. Someday 🤞 Glad to see someone play awesome & creative riffs on it.
So glad that you are getting this spotlight, Arianna!!! I took note of your fantastic cleaner tones and chord voicings on the BBC Radio 1 you did with Halsey a few years back on that Jonas Bros cover of "Sucker". And ~thank you~ (sarcasm marks) for showing me the J.Rockett Tim Pierce pedal. Tim is one of my favorites. Also the Afterneath!... so crazy unique!!
Agree 100%... she killed it on "Sucker"... it sounds like she had a lot in that arrangement
That Was Awesome
super tasteful player! all the tones are bang on as well.
very cool great board very diverse, I like IT!
Her phrasing is ridiculous. She's one of the best in my book.
what a pretty guitar (and wicked playing)
Excellent 👍
5:40 so much yes!
an absolute legend
Perfect lineup of effects and blend of tones!
Glad you think so!
Great vid, great player
That is a beautiful guitar.
wow great distortion tone!
wow! I've just received used EQD Spatial Delivery today! Playin' all day long. So Arianna use it, very nice pedal! Bought all my envelope filter pedals and finally satisfied with Spatial Delivery! Recomended!
Amazing lady of guitar players.
what a great guitar player, damn.
Very cool
Killer technique and tone!
Very personable and reasonable sounding lady. And yeah, she rocks as a performer. Sweet lesson.
Wow, she is great.
Attack high, release slow.... Great motto!
Great to have a pedal(s) demo where the artist actually knows how to use the particular pedals. Most reviews the player turns the knobs without knowing what they are really going to get and then act like that's what they wanted all along. LOL
She's such a great player.
1:57 blew my mind
Damn she's great!!! Gotta look into her
She will be back very soon! Subscribe for more
That opening riff makes me feel like I'm out on the open water with my tasty treats
Those first few chords were a welcome surprise
Why do I wanna have a picnic now?
Such a classy girl, her playing is stunning and she knows exactly what she is doing with the pedals. Very inspiring.
wow
Her reverb game is karayzay!!!
Our ears seem to like a lot of the same things. Still like my verb from a '64 Fender stand-alone tank. Very tweakable through the mixer. Won't go anywhere without a Hoof. The JRAD Archer is a very good Klon clone for OD. The OCD Ge adds some butter. Get the time-based stuff from a Keeley Monterey and an EQD Pyramids.
Is it sad that I'm still using a DOD DFX 91 from the 80's for delay?! ;O Not really. Bought it new and she still does what she was meant to. ;) Yeah, I'm old enough to be your dad, but I still Love to play just as much as I did when I was 14! ;D
Hope you all maintain the Love of making music at least as long as I have. The tools may change; the passion doesn't.
nice guitar
She plays each pedal perfectly. You can tell she's really into effects and has probably sat around for days messing with each of them.
This vid has convinced me to dig my POG2 out of storage.
How did it ever get there in the first place??
She’s a great player. Nothing she played was redundant and great board
Does anyone know what the riff she's playing at 11:31 is from? If that's a song that exists somewhere, I need to find it
Great demo Ariana. What was the first fuzz pedal you played?
It’s a Hoof Fuzz from EQD
it's wired in stereo but going into a mono amp it seems. I wonder if there is a point in her signal chain where the stereo signal is summed into mono or am i missing something?
I'd assume there is a summing box/switch. I got one from Saturnworks (I think?)
She’s bad ass
Arianna gives me a little of that Terri Nunn resemblance from Berlin.
Instant fan here. Something really sensitive and deliberate in her playing. I’m thinking she’s done some studying music wise. 👍🗽🔝
Great video. Their music isn't really my cup of tea but I just gained a newfound respect for Halsey
Any idea which Supro that is in the background?
Looks like the Black Magick Combo to me
Great player. Great tones. My favorite guitar. Ever! Maybe some day I will actually own one. Oh. And, I want every pedal on her board. Which, I think, is the whole point of this vid. 🎶🎶🌻🌈🌅🎶🎶
this girl is Ruling!!!
That organ thing is tight.
i didnt know EQD made sort of an Autowah hmmmm prob my next pedal
Duuuude she's so sick
POG
Sister Rosetta Tharpe gibson style guitar is so awesome to see
The best!
I hope Jonas has her play the solos. haha
That thing at about 6 minutes is amazing. Modern Radiohead?
Jimi Hendrix’s SG?
Band eq or parametric eq? Thats my question. I think the parametric eq is better but they are rare and most times not so affordebel. I mean there is no need to go for cheap cheap but there is not a lot under 200 euros to Start with. I found some for under a 100. Now i ask myself is it worth to try them. I use GEB 7 pedals. I know there are better once out there but.... could it be a little ugley duckling for 40 snots? It is no need that the pedal must be better but simular effective. They are always on so the mechanic can be crap. No need for a dicend switch. ... actually i need guitar and patch cables... so funk the eq . Cool Video. I love the Board to death Show. Thx 🥳
I wonder what wah pedal was used at the end
yeah, that's a great riff. I think it was an envelope filter (auto wah)
it's the eqd spatial delivery; its an autowah
She rips.
Low key reminds me of the modulated side of Zach Abelz
