Technically, the Napster we know today isn't even the Napster in this commercial, which closed down in 2002 and sold its name to another company that turned it into a legal streaming service. The name changed hands once again in 2011 to the then-named Rhapsody.
I was making the first burner CDs in high school when I was downloading a Napster song at 3 kilobytes a second. One 3.5 MB Metallica song took me damn near 3 hours. Now try downloading 12, and then using a 2X HP CD burner to make that shit. This was bleeding edge in 1999/2000!
This was a fake ad that played during the MTVA VMAs .... starring alongside Marlon Wayans from Scary Movie 2. And for old dudes like me he was also in the sketch comedy show "In Living Color"
The 90s were a dark time for all of us that lived through it in real time...and now that I see it again all these years later....yep...a dark time indeed 😆
Ah, I see that October 2022 is when we reach the point where no one gets self deprecating humor. It's a fucking sketch for an awards show, not a commercial. Lars was super cool to agree to it. This is like if he went on SNL. Same shit. Not a single person in your chat could point this out? Fuck I'm old.
My freaking G'd, this brings back memories. The first thing I ever downloaded when I got a lightning fast 56k connection was Napster and then a 99' S'n'M bootleg audio lol.
That's actually a mega high dollar production I would imagine considering you got one of the funniest comedians of the time and probably one of the highest payments and you've got all those cross promotions like with the Pepsi 5:54
Oh I remember the Metallica vs Napster thing, I was like 10 but I remember hearing about it. So against streaming back then and its become the norm now.
I’m going to age myself Pepsi as a huge sponsor of everything 2000s culture backwards red heats where everywhere and fun fact this got so out of control for piracy DVDs had anti piracy adds before the movie not going to lie things were very different in 97-01
The only questions I have are why was one of the Wayans Brothers such a Metallica fan & how is Metallica supposed to finish getting revenge on the chick when they already used her to get revenge on the dude?
Hay Nik, every get the feeling Metallica were going to get paid in the Napster trail based on its net traffic so they low-key plug Napster to bump up the value of there settlement??? Just a thought I had.🤘😉🤘
It's weird if you think about how they rake in millions. If, let's say, napster, limewire or any other sharing services wouldn't exist, would they get more money? If so, for what purpose? In the end, they lose peanuts compared to selling CDs/Vinyl/digital-albums. Torrenting songs only hurts small bands, but also promotes small bands by sharing them since there's no MTV anymore to promote stuff like back when. I always feel like people who have millions always keep thinking they need more. They shouldn't've bought mansions to begin with, then they wouldn't have to get more money to finance that high society lifestyle. Hoarding wealth like a fucking Smaug will just end up making you more douchey.
I was 15 When all this went down. But never saw the commercial cuz i was busy with sports and school. Didnt like watching award shows anyways. But i do remember my best friend at the time downloaded alot of music from Napster. Powerman 5000, deftones, Rob zombie, slipknot etc, etc.
That was really cringe. Was it an attempt to be funny? You must watch the South Park episode "Christian Rock Hard" where the kids get caught downloading by a SWAT team. The FBI agent shows the kids how "Lars Ulrich can't afford his gold shark tank and sits there crying". The thing with downloading called "stealing" was so stupid. When you copy a digital file the original is still there. I found so much music and bands that I later bought cd:s and concert tickets by. I could never been able to afford all the stuff I downloaded.
NikNocturnal, RUclipsr who promotes himself as being hip to the rock/metal scene knew nothing about the Metallica vs, Napster dispute bac k then??? WOW!
Does no one really not remember this? Metallica fell off hard and then Lars went after Napster which is all we had back in the day. This was the most douchiest thing ever. I mean Metallica already fell off but this was the nail in the coffin for them. I mean, I've been playing drums since I was 14 and I'm 39 now. The double bass in One that's what got my love for drums sparked but Lars will always be a f****** loser
*Who's old enough to remember Napster? Comment below!*
I'm aware of the Metallica vs Napster stuff.
Yeah though i was more of a LimeWire user.
Remember using it back in the 90s and then when it went to crap I 100% gave my pc aids with limewire and Kazaah 🤣
I remember seeing this. I'm old...
I use it as my streamingservice
Ironic that Napster's streaming service now apparently pays artists 4x the amount per stream that spotify does...
Technically, the Napster we know today isn't even the Napster in this commercial, which closed down in 2002 and sold its name to another company that turned it into a legal streaming service. The name changed hands once again in 2011 to the then-named Rhapsody.
@@MaestroKatProductions Ah right, that would explain it.
Absolutely ironic
Lars’ Pepsi can was the one used for the St. Anger snare.
This wasn’t actually a commercial. This was a skit that they did on the MTV video music awards
I was worried about getting fined for downloading from Napster 🤣🤣
But not worried about viruses 🤣

I was like, ten. Had no idea how dangerous downloading was back then. Cut me some slack, Phrost!
Not even just a commercial it was aired at some music award thing.
This was a fake ad that played during the MTVA VMAs .... starring alongside Marlon Wayans from Scary Movie 2. And for old dudes like me he was also in the sketch comedy show "In Living Color"
This cringefest of a commercial makes every rawr I've heard in my lifetime seem like a fond childhood memory.
It's literally a skit. Blows my mind nobody recognizes the actor from scary movie is in this
I love the humor of musicians.
They are literally poking fun at themselves.
I see why Southpark made an episode about Metallica and Napster.
Yeah, it was for an award show and Lars agreed to poke fun at himself.
Omfg😂😂😂😂 I am old enough to remember this I laughing then and I still am laughing 😂
The 90s were a dark time when it was always the 90s, but never Christmas.
Omg Lars is the best actor ever hahaha
The 90s were a dark time for all of us that lived through it in real time...and now that I see it again all these years later....yep...a dark time indeed 😆
I'm 38 and it truly was the end of a era. Also Lars has always been the biggest herb!

I used to use Kazaa to download my music back in the day. lol I'm 38. It's crazy seeing these old 90's video's. Lars has always been the biggest herb!
Imagine being a metal youtuber and not knowing about this
That's actually a mega high dollar production I would imagine considering you got one of the funniest comedians of the time and probably one of the highest payments and you've got all those cross promotions like with the Pepsi 5:54
Is that the stoner guy from scary movie?
Indeed!

otherwise known as Marlon Wayans
@@JLTS76 I had forgotten his name!! Thanks!! ❤️
This is f#ckn gold! Thanks for this 😆
Nowadays, the platforms themselves are the uppity ones (looking at you, Tubez)
And they had a Wayans brother play the fan🤣
Dude she's like 2 ft taller than Lars 😂
Tiny ritch man asks regular guy to spend money
Whoa Marlon Waynes stars in the commercial lol
The best part is that Lars was 100% right about ALL OF IT
Embarrassing take
i think this is actually funny and not that cringy. i like people poking fun at themselves, it makes them easier to relate to ig
Even though a lot of people were pissed at Metallica, they 100% were in the right suing
Oh. My. God. Ive reached a point where no remembers when and why this happened. 😂😂😂😂 god that makes me feel old.
The Napstallica cartoons are ridiculous too
OMG XD I wish I could remember this; I was only a Baby and a Toddler in the 90's I think I was 7 years old in Year 2000
The metallica thing, the other guy is Marlon Wayans. Him and his brother are behind all the "scary movies" and stuff.
People are still mad at at lars for suing Napster
Oh I remember the Metallica vs Napster thing, I was like 10 but I remember hearing about it. So against streaming back then and its become the norm now.
Btw new architects song :) its a fucking banger especially the start is nice
Actually 2000 the song being play is I disappear from metallica, last song jason newsted made with metallica before he left.
the dude is marlon wayans from the wayans brothers

Did u know that Metallica did a prince cover in 2018?
This was millionaires wanting average people to feel bad because they got $10,000,000 instead of $12,000,000
lol now Lars needs one about limewire
W commercial
I remember that lol
The only questions I have are why was one of the Wayans Brothers such a Metallica fan & how is Metallica supposed to finish getting revenge on the chick when they already used her to get revenge on the dude?

had to be 2000 ish...oh but i remember the OG glory of napster lol
I miss the 90s... Cringe and all 😂😂😂

I remember Napster but used Limewire. Also why is Marlon Wayans is in this commercial?
lol
Im old... at least my kids think so
Metallica just made it worse by promoting Napster kind of like anti smoking and vaping ads
Marlon Wayans being cringe
NikNocturnal, RUclipsr who promotes himself as being hip to the rock/metal scene knew nothing about the Metallica vs, Napster dispute bac k then??? WOW!
Knew about the dispute, has touched on it previously - wasn't aware of this commercial

Well, I guess it worked, cos Metallica definitely killed Napster.
I'll always love Metallica, but they went boomer real quick
#limewire
Yeah this is why people hated Metallica for a very long time they were way over the top about this whole situation

So, uhmmm, the concept of Napster stealing all your stuff got lost in you? Lol Them stealing all your stuff wouldn't deter you? 🤔
kinda reminds me of you and your over reacting a bit

So cringe guys WTF!!!
Sadly not the most cringe thing Lars has done.
And some wonder why others don't like Lars? It's this stupid shit right here.
