Hey, THINK about what you are experiencing. You are trying to reason Why related to 'Satellites'. Starlink is NOT satellites. Maybe airplanes or some other Land Hubs, But Definitely NOT satellites.
When Ukraine had No Fly Zones, Musk tried to make it seem like HE cut off Starlink. Not true. It has something to do with airplanes and/or Land Hubs 😉

Great reviews!!! Real world experience helps the rest of us so much. To all the knobs that say didn't you read the manual on obstructions they don't understand that obstructions are not well defined. Little branches bother the service? A small clear opening is enough or is wide open desert sky needed? Your real life reviews are invaluable. Keep them coming and thank you.

Thanks for doing these videos -- I have been watching your reviews and updates pretty closely to see if Starlink might be for us (part-time RVers), so I really appreciate your honest opinion about how it is working for you. I think it is something we'll probably get in the future once the service is more reliable, but it doesn't seem like a good fit for us just yet. Thanks again for keeping us all updated on your experience!!

Thank you for this follow up video. We are up in the mountains of Northern California and we have been using Hughes Net Satellite for internet. It’s very horrible internet! We took the leap and bought the Star-link system and have been using it for about 2 weeks now. I agree with you in that the service is not as great as I had hoped. We have a fairly open area of sky with a few tall trees. I think it’s crazy that our obstructions can be 8 percent and the satellite drops as much as it does 🙄 We are in the process of raising it up on a poke to about 8 ft. We really hope that helps. We have zero cell service here so this really is our only option for fast internet.
We plan on moving about every 3 months so having reliable internet on the road is so important! Let’s see how everything plays out when more Satellites are deployed. Looking forward to your further reviews :)

Reporting in from rural central Oregon. We've had Starlink at our home for about four months and are very happy with it. Out here we don't have a lot of options for internet and our previous service was about the same monthly price, but very limited. We haven't traveled with our Starlink dish yet, so when we do, we'll turn the mobile feature on and off, as needed.

I'm very excited about Starlink. It's still very early and they just don't have enough satellites to give the kind of service we would all like. It will improve over the next couple of years and will be a complete game changer. I appreciate your honest review of the current status which isn't ideal, especially on the east coast.

Love Starlink for RV! Ordered the Starlink for RV a few weeks ago. Arrived just in time for our boondocking at Joe's Valley Reservoir in Utah. Once arriving I set the dish on top of my truck cover. Secured it with bungee chords so it would not blow off with the wind. I have a GoalZero Yeti 1500 so I plugged the router into that. Within 1/2 hr setup I was getting 100mbps and sometimes faster. After all the other relatives arrived, and they found out I had internet everyone wanted to log in with their devices. I had 12 devices logged in, and I could still watch Prime Video and Nexflix with no problem. My Yetti 1500 said it had about 35 hours left of charge while plugged into the router. Since I have solar on my roof I could also charge the Yetti if I needed to, but with 35 hours there was no need. At night I would turn it off and then in the morning turn it back on again. Took about 5 minutes to re-connect, and since Joe's Valley does not have mobile service everyone could still make calls with the Starlink log in. Best decision I have made for my RV !

I read about all of these people experiencing coverage problems, obstructions, slow speeds, etc. Of course this makes me nervous a bit waiting to see if I encounter any of these problems. Got my Starlink for RV yesterday. I put it out in the backyard (here in Orlando which is still listed as a waitlist area) and within 30 min or so I was getting 130 down/15 up speeds. I left it out there most of the day and it seemed to work fine. My yard has partial tree obstructions, especially a large tree in the north end. East sky is pretty clear. Most of our use will be here in Florida so I expect we'll be seeing lots of frustrating antenna spot hunting. I knew this going in so if this turns out to be mostly a useless endeavor then that's on me. We run into the same problem placing our tv sat dish antenna. Of course those satellites don't move and once you find a good spot you are fine until you have to move. There's no magic bullets here yet. Cell coverage is generally good, but not in all places we go. We do a lot of beach camping and most of those sites have little tree obstructions. I'm also curious why your experience in the Keys was so bad.

Thanks for Starlink the info and reception updates. Will be watching closely now that service has opened up in my area. I've noticed the carrier services making home 4G/5G service prices more competitive as the starlink rollout progresses. SL service may end up being the premium tier and 4/5G home services the more affordable option..

Just ordered for use mainly on West Coast (the RV plan). I just got starlink, im outside of philly on the NJ side about 5 miles away from the airport. I have no issues at my house. I took it a few places and it seems to work well but I agree, the issue with obstructions is bad. The dish really needs a clear view of the sky to the north/ north west. I currently have it connect to my unifi UDM pro as a backup connection to my comcast internet. The UDM pro will automatically failover to starlink when comcast goes down.

I have had SL for a couple months now, specifically in North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach SC, we will be hitting the road FT at the end of this month heading to Wisconsin, then NOLA, then CO, it has worked flawlessly so far, at the moment my unit is at my TT hooked up and running, so I can monitor my Victron on my phone from home, we took it to Lakewoods for the Grand Design Rally, there too it worked flawlessly with 150mbps or better speeds, BUT full unobstructed views. I will see as we move around, my expectation is we will use out Hotspot from the Calyx Institute (Tmobile) quite a bit East of the Mississippi, but then West we will probably use SL due to poor cell coverage and more open skies.

I ended up getting Starlink RV just a week ago as my home internet. I'm in central Wisconsin with lots of trees, but a clear view of the sky at my location, and so far it's been great. My only other options were CenturyLink DSL (which is pretty slow plus I don't have a phone line run to our building anyway), or Verizon mobile which is ok, but not great at our location. So far Starlink has been a godsend. Finally getting stuff online done.

A Pepwave router can connect to their cloud service. When you are doing something critical like a zoom call, you can configure it to "mirror" the data across two connections, so if one drops out it doesn't affect your call. For less mission critical data, you can configure it to hot switch between the two connections - but this comes with a few seconds of lag during the fail over.

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  2 года назад +2

Good content and an honest review. I'd say that the price is fairly expensive and it's probably not a great value for at least 2-3 more years. Most likely the value would be out in the Western States where cell towers are sparsely located and less obstructions. My 2 cents

I live in a rural area of the east with no Internet options other than satellite and very poor cell service and I waited for Starlink for 11 months but it was worth the wait and the money because now we can work from home or homeschool if we choose. It has been a game changer for us and many people outside the metro areas. If you have good internet available over fiber-optic then Starlink might not be your best value but for a lot of people it's our only option

I'm not going to be negative at all but I am going to be critical as I have been using Starlink a lot longer than most as a beta. Just like ANY type of receiver, obstruction is reduced by elevating. You are using only the stand. If you want better performance in rustic camping locations, you need to elevate it. Up out of trees is ideal, but even if you can improve its view. Simple analogy - the closer to the end of a tunnel, the better the view. We camp in a mix of site styles, but mostly rustic. I put together my own mast system using telescoping fiberglass pole (re-purposed professional power washer 2-story pole). I have made a ladder mount for our 5th wheel and also re-purposed our old Dish tripod to hold the pole remote from the coach and added the ability to tie it by guys if it needs to be a full 19 feet extended and we're in a windy spot. There are similar commercialized solutions available now versus my home grown. We have seen those all over in the past 2.5 months of travel. Anyway, because I work mobile, it's critical for me to be connected, and I do have hotspot backup. However, I have been able to use Starlink much more successfully than you are encountering where service is available. As the mesh densifies, obstruction issues will reduce for a narrow sight line, but it definitely won't be able to see through trees and solids like radio waves. Try elevating into the clear views.

Here are the 3 reasons Starlink IS for me:
    1) I have a cabin in the North Maine Woods
    2) The closest place I can get a cell signal is an 8 mile boat ride and another hour and fifteen minute car ride.
    3) I get amazingly fast wifi at my cabin with Starlink and can even do Zoom appointments for work there now because of it.

I suppose I’ll still be able to access the app to do the setup when I’m there and have no reception of any kind until I set the starlink up? Also, how far does the Wi-Fi reach? Hoping it can make it to my shop/barn about 100 mostly unobstructed yards away from the house?
I just got my confirmation email today so my starlink is on its way, I’m so excited to have internet up there!! Thanks for any answers you have, there’s no way to call starlink and ask questions..

Yes, that camera app Starlink has is pretty accurate for sure! Each location I do use it, but when there is only a small window of clear sky it doesn’t help much. For example in this location at Skidaway park in GA I used the app and every location said to pick a better location.🤣 but it did find signal in the third spot I put it, but the app didn’t indicate that. I just had to move it Around to try and get a view around the trees.

You can setup a pfsense firewall in router mode (if you want to use cheaper hardware or don't want a firewall) and easily setup dual wan (internet connections) with redundancy or split if you want to ease data used between the two.
You could build this setup for about $250 possibly less. Or you can much less if turning on router mode as it takes far less processing power.
Given that you're in a camper, You could use pfsense to set up a captive portal and possibly make some money by charging people to use your internet.

I just ordered the starlink rv a couple days ago. I'm in my second week of full time rv life and I'm taking an online class with the hopes of switching careers to something I can do from the road. I've been on the fence about starlink with the thought that I'd probably get it eventually once I started working from the road. While I'm just taking the class I wanted to make a go of it with my phone as a hot spot through Visible (verizon towers) and a hot spot device with AT&T. However now I'm in a beautiful location (with no obstructions) that I plan to stay at for a week but with both my services internet is spotty at best. Actually the Verizon doesn't work at all. In fact while I was watching your video it froze and I had to reboot my AT&T hot spot for probably the 10th time today. My biggest hang up with the starlink was price, then I realized that $599 is less than I paid for my netgear 5g hot spot, which isn't working too great for me, and way less than the 2 Sim pepwave router I had at one time considered getting. Not being able to work on my class and realizing I already spent more than if I had just gotten starlink to begin with put me over the edge to just go ahead and order it. I might cancel the AT&T and keep the Visible (Verizon) on my phone as backup.
Edited to add: last week when I was camping inside Grand Teton National Park my Visible (Verizon) service through my phone was working great. With Visible you get truly unlimited Hotspot data, it's just always throttled to 5mbps. Or so they say. I was actually getting 10mbps. But even when it is down to 5 I can still stream TV on netflix/amazon/RUclips and take my class which involves PowerPoint presentations. I haven't tried it but I've seen people say they can even do zoom calls. Everybody goes on about higher speeds but I think, for the most part, we really don't need as much as we think we do.

We have one oak tree in front that has minimal blockage when we do the star link sky mapping. I knew there would be a chance we would have some interruption but I didn't realize it would be so much. All well put. I like how you're reviewing Starlink. Now if only you could work in some more Louie content with the Starlink reviews... I myself am gearing up for going part time nomadic. Being that I'm an IT pro I need to go a bit overboard on my choices for coverage and I will be spending some considerable money month to month to support that. In short, if I can't get coverage then I can't work from the road at all. Like you said, it's the cost of business.
So on to my point. I don't know your workflow or what you're willing to spend but it sounds to me like keeping Starlink and augmenting your Verizon service may be good for you. And good news, kind of. This week, Starlink announced that they soon will allow residential subscribers to convert to the RV tier. The caveats are that you cannot convert back and the RV tier is deprioritized. But as you pointed out, you can pause service at any time. So as for the peplink hardware, that is something to consider if you need as seamless as possible coverage and without having to fiddle around much with it after your first configuration. I already made some really long comments mentioning that you can blend various services using those devices, including Starlink. In short, the more services that you can throw at one of their devices the better service you get overall. There's some channels on RUclips that specialize in talking to all of that and they've had a lot more hands on experience with them on the road than I.
All that said, if you're comfortable with manually turning off Starlink when it's not doing the job and firing up Verizon via your hotspot in it's place then stick with that. The peplink just makes things much easier and more seamless by handling the bonding of or changing between services for you. Especially helpful if you want or need to use more than one brand of cellular service. No need to carry multiple hotspots or to manually swap out sims. You may want to seriously consider spending about $200-$300 on a better omnidirectional roof mount MIMO antenna for your current hotspot, though. There's plenty of good no-drill options. They are a night and day difference from that portable MIMO Netgear you have now. That's similar to all I'm using now for my trailer, a roof mount MIMO with a mobile Netgear Nighthawk and I just swap out sims [Tmo, AT&T] depending where I am. That will have to do until I get a peplink of my own soon. I had to give up the test unit I had for a few weeks and took on the road briefly. I have to say it is amazing for its abilities compared to what I've worked on and fiddled with over the years. Any network nerds looking for a mobile device that is ridiculously redundant and that's highly configurable for nearly any scenario you can think of, consider them. I don't like sounding like a shill but, they work and cut down on clutter.
So it sounds like you're already doing a bit of a cost analysis. Have you considered making projections? What I mean is estimate over say a year how much you will use Starlink, where and when you will pause it [assuming you go to the RV tier] and how much that will cost over that period, combine in your equipment costs for the year and your month to month cell service costs and basically look at an ROI for that period of time. That antenna upgrade I mentioned is a small up-front that can possibly net you more income, for example. Maybe you'll find room for even fancier kit like the peplink. The benefits it can provide might save time or you may determine it's not worth it at this time. These are the sorts of studies I need to do whenever I start pitching whatever network configs to my bosses and customers.
Anyway, like I said, I'll have my own peplink kit soon and some part time use of a Starlink kit on the RV tier. I plan to use them both together so if you're interested, hit me up. I should have something worthwhile to report in a few months.

Sounds good, thanks for the time into these comments. And more Louie yes! Our new RV did come with a roof mounted Winegaurd 360+ that has a MIMO in it. I tried taping into it with our hotspot, but I had to use some adapters and extensions from ts9 to MCX on the antenna... It didnt seem to get any better than my window mount...but I need to re look at it. Keep me informed on your Starlink journey!

    • @charlesswank6401
      @charlesswank6401 2 года назад

@@IreneIronTravels A few pointers on the Winegard hack, if I may? I'll try to be brief. That antenna is meant to be used in conjunction with their gateway and in both of their configs the gateway is directly connected to the antenna. That said, I would avoid using extensions and use as few adapters as possible. I don't think you should need any adapters if you directly connect your Verizon hotspot. I'm pretty sure yours uses TS9 connectors. When I tried the Winegard I plugged it's TS9's directly into my router and temporarily mounted it on the ceiling. Something to be aware of is there are 3 TS9's, red, yellow and green. The red one is for wifi, green and yellow are MIMO. A little janky but it did the job. You may also want to try swapping the green and yellow connectors around on the hotspot as antenna phasing matters. Something to keep in mind with adapters is they typically account for ~1db of signal loss for each one used. Extensions can be ~3db or more depending on many factors. So with a couple of adapters and extensions in the mix it's possible and likely to cancel out any signal gain from the antenna. This all applies to any cellular antenna.
The only specs I could find on the Winegard is that it does cover AT&T and Verizon LTE bands so band coverage should be good in general. There's no mention of B71 or other low freq. bands but it seemed to work for me. Also, I don't see any gain specs but in my testing it acted like a ~3db gain antenna, maybe a little higher. So it's seemingly at least on par with the Netgear directional we both have. Here's specs for the Netgear: • Up to 2.5 dB gain • Frequency Bands 700-906/1710-1990/2110-2170/2500-2700 MHz. The only benefit for you or I to do the Winegard hack vs. the Netgear directional would be to get a decent unidirectional MIMO antenna up in the air with some ground plane under it and that helps considerably. I did throw that one out there for anyone who already has it and who wants to play around with an external antenna before buying one. For me here in the West it worked better than the Netgear with the caveat that I had to have my little router hanging from my ceiling. If you want to have a nice and tidy installation with external antenna(s) then I would look to some rooftop externals from the likes of Waveform, MobileMark and Parsec to name a few. Those all come with higher quality low-loss coax than most extensions and you should only need an SMA to TS9 adapter for each antenna phase (each mimo lead is a "phase") on your Verizon hotspot, keeping the loss to a minimum. I'm trying a Parsec myself. The MobileMarks look to have the most versatile offerings with most bang for the buck regarding mount types and all-in-one device antenna combinations. Hope that helps!

I have no obstructions and knew going in that Starlink is very much a beta at this point, more satellites are needed and more are going up each launch. About that initial cost, established satellite companies wanted over 900 for equipment and fees, then each month they wanted rental fees on the equipment for 5 down and 1-3 up. They also had tons of legal jargon about outages etc. So in my book Starlink is the way to go moving forward.

Two factors affect usable connectivity connectivity. One is geometry. Nearly all of the initial waves of satellites are in the 53° have an orbital inclination of 53°. So the density of satellites above your horizon is greatest at 53° north latitude and 53° south latitude and lowest over a horizon at the equator. This was reflected in the initial Starlink USA rollout where norther cells were activated before southern cells. The second is geography. Apart from a strip up against the Pacific Ocean, where LA, SF, and Seattle sit, the population density in the West is a lot lower than in the east. So subscriptions are made available to balance demand and capacity. As more satellites enter the constellation, availability will increase and more subscribers can enroll. Areas with high population density will have fewer per capita enrollment opportunities than sparsely populated areas.
As the number of satellites in the constellation increases, the statistical fluctuation in the number of satellites in your horizon will decline or even out, if you will
