If I never watched shrek again for the next 50 years I don't believe that I would forget a single thing about it. I still remember being like 10 and jumping on my bed at the end and singing "I'm a believer" at the top of my lungs. And I'm nearly 24
The first Shrek movie is literally important to animated cinema and is a movie so significant in its depature from what people assumed you could do with animation that it prompted the oscar to start valuing animated films and detecate an entire category to them. Shrek won the first ever best animated picture oscar. Its also wildly flanderized the disney approach to animated storytelling that it helped give way to much different approaches as far as main stream western animation is concerned.
I said this in a different comment but I don’t think films like Tangled exist without Shrek’s influence. Disney had to revamp their storytelling because audiences were aware that there was some better than what the company had to offer.
I love this duo.

@@arjenvanderheide1106 It’s hard because Shrek did kinda have an effect on the industry. Lord of the Rings is probably the best adaptation of an original story, hands down. LotR set a new benchmark of fidelity in filmmaking. But in terms of story telling, Shrek had a profound impact on what kind of stories were told, specially in animation. I don’t think we ever get Tangled if Shrek never existed.

I always saw Shrek as a parody of Disney. The creator of DreamWorks hated the CEO (named Michael Eisner) for disagreements of buying the IP.

But it’s an insane parody because it’s actually good. Like the subversions of a typical fairytale done so well. A classic film imo

I'm torn between who's right here, they both are making valid points. But like Lord of the Rings
Shrek popularized using pop music on an animated movie. It created an entire plethora of films that revolves around improving a scene by using pop songs instead of using a bespoke song written for that scene. It was literally cutting edge cinema.
Shrek influenced many other animated movies of the era. LOTR redefined cinema, and is the benchmark for which epic fantasy movies/shows are compared. The most recent of which being Game of Thrones, and the colossal failure to measure up.

Toast can disrespect the LOTR movie, but him and the whole core of OTV kind of owes their career to the Lord of the Rings IP, it was highly influential in the making of Warcraft and from that initial tree spawned WoW, DOTA, League of Legends, & Hearthstone which are the games that put the core of OTV on the map.
Not even a debate LOTR wins without biased, like you said they are ironically playing World of Warcraft which was influenced by LOTR while arguing about the influence of LOTR, while he build his career on Hearthstone which was made from Warcraft that came from LOTR.

I actually agree with Toast on the song being in Mario. Took me out of the movie for a bit. Not to the same degree, but similar.
Dude Spirited Away came out in 2001 too. I agree with a user that said, "Toast is delusional and copium when it comes to Shrek, but we still like him for who he is" xD
"My precious." Is probably more recognizable than any line from any Shrek movie. Shrek's biggest impact to me was probably having a lot of big named celebrities with large notarity at the time doing the voice acting, I could be mistaken though I just can't think of any other animations to do it before. Shrek 1 and the LotR series are all solid films though you can't go wrong with either.
Lion King had quite a few big names, but it's mainly attributed to Dreamworks. Prince of Egypt had a lot of celebs.

Imo harry potter is a level of its own but shrek was insane and things like monster inc / lotr / finding nemo werent at the same level although they were all great movies.

I was with toast, Shrek has its merits in its contributions to animated media. But it's not the most influential in that regard. Only recently are other major US studios moving away from the "Pixar style".

It being meme'd is only apppreciation to how good of a franchise it is. Shrek is genuinely one of the best trilogies out there. (Yes, Trilogy. Shrek 3 doesn't coount. Is 100% unnecessary and pointless. You can easily skip it and not miss a SINGLE THING).

Shrek outshined both LOR and Monster Inc. Ranking number 2 in the US. Shrek 2 out performed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Spiderman 2. I see it as iconic and Shrek is known for creating major change. Of course I'm a magic loving gay, so I had posters of Daniel Radcliffe growing up instead of Shrek. 😂 Also of the guys from Twilight lmao
