  • Periodically I let Charlie roam around my room. Generally, she ends up getting stuck somewhere or breaking something, so I do not do it often. In this case, I filmed her eating and swimming in the turtle tank. I figured it would be pretty easy just to put on some audio of me taking about the lizard that started it all.

    My iguana was the best and only iguana I ever had that was sweet. My boy, Gemini was fully potty trained, slept in a dog bed, ate with us, he loved to cuddle and was super gentle, he loved car rides, and our oldest son as a baby, he would peek over at him and guard him, he loved visitors, and being in peoples laps. He was super affectionate putting his face against our cheeks, he hated bugs and thunderstorms. He demanded to be with us every minute of the day, preferable curled up in a blanket with his pillow on our laps. He never once showed aggression, or head bobbed at us like I saw so many other iguanas do and if he was afraid, he would run to me or my husband or my Mom and bury his face in our laps. He was very much a very big lizard but did not act like it. His favorite foods were people food. I had to be careful if I brought home takeout..as he would find me eating, plop down right on me and help himself to my food. Though, if I tried to take the food away he would feel ashamed and put his head down...so I made sure to bring him one thing just for him He loved macaroni salad, rice pilaf and fried chicken! He ate his regular diet but never once did he refuse treats or food in general, he was a foodie. My Mom was initially afraid of lizards but realized fast this was no ordinary lizard and loved him by day 2, demanding he eat with us and promptly gave him a blanket. My Mom carried him around everywhere and demanded she feed him at the table. A year later, my then boyfriend, now hubby and I got married and boy, did my Mom miss him. My Mom loved to visit us and would come in, sit on the couch and call Gemini and he would come running to her fast. My Hubby built him a massive house in our living room, he free roamed during the day, but his door to his house was open so when he needed to go to the bathroom, he would go in his litter box and would wait for us to wipe his bottom with a baby wipe before he would come back out. He hated to be dirty and loved bathtime too. Our bathroom was upstairs and all we had to say, was come on time for bath and he would follow us upstairs to get his bath. Even going outside too, he never ran away, just stayed with us as he was very anxious. One time we had a bad storm wity major lightening and our front door blew open in our townhouse. I fell asleep upstairs and hubby came home from work and we freaked out, where was he? We frantically went out the front door, then laughed... no way he was out there....a door wide open would not appeal to him. First thing we thought, go upstairs and look in the beds. And....there he was, he crawled under the bedspread, threw back his arms, head on the pillow fast asleep! That's the kind of lizard he was...basically a fearful, puppy tame babyfied boy. As years went on, we had dozens of other lizards and still do...but he went down in history as not what we would expect from a lizard. I see videos people put out on RUclips and if RUclips was around back then, Gemini would have been a superstar as he was incredible and one of a kind. So miss him but grateful we had him so long. Btw...love seeing other peoples videos as its neat to see other iguanas. 🙂

      @@DIYReptiles 🙂 My baby really was sweet, so wish others saw just how amazing some iguanas can be. I know it's not common, but best way to find out which lizard could be different, is when people are looking at a clutch of new babies...find the one who is already friendly, coming up to the glass or your hand who is super eager to engage. I sadly, actually picked another iguana and the sales guy was trying to get it, as all the other iguanas ran to get away from this guys hand. My Gemini was the only one who jumped TO the guy landing on his arm. He crawled up on it and wanted to get out and the sales guy asked us, what about this one? I was disappointed because the one I wanted now was lost among the rest, so I reluctantly agreed to look at the one on his arm. The guy gave him to me to hold, and crazy thing was he never ran or got scared. He immediately wanted to cuddle up to me, look me over and get up to my face to lick me. He looked absolutely adorable and incredibly sweet as he parked himself up on my shoulder so excited to meet me. Well, long story short, he picked me and I quickly forgot about the other iguana as this beautiful boy charmed his way into my heart. They had to put him in a box to pay for him and he looked sad as he wanted us to hold him. But soon as we got out to the car, we opened up the box and he immediately got out and crawled into my lap and happily rode home with me holding him. Just incredible. But the irony is...while Gemini loved people he was a very anxious boy, requiring us to keep him nearby us, he had to always be able to see us and then, he was happy. When, I had my first son, Gemini heard me crying as labor began....he shook so hard once I left thinking I died. Hubby came to check in on him and every nerve was shaking and Hubby thought he was going to die. He quickly reassured him and put a picture of me in his house which he quickly cuddled up against. Soon, as I and my new baby arrived home, he ran to me and licked me everywhere and stared into my face to reassure him I was ok. He then looking perplexed, licked and checked over his new human baby, gently putting his hand up on his leg to figure out how this could be, who was this familiar smelling person. He nuzzled him immediately carefully and gently, continuously looking back at me, then the baby. I explained to him what happened, that Mama had a baby! When he finally understood, he finally relaxed, crawled up fully on my lap...him and the baby now together. That's how he was....just amazing. Funny thing to, my elderly neighbor lady at the time who was not a fan of lizards but tolerated him, looked on with amazement. It goes to say, after that day my neighbor greeted Gemini, pet him like he was another child of mine. Had she not seen with her own eyes, Geminis concern, love, compassion, all of it....she never would have believed it. But the neighbor too knew, this was no ordinary iguana! 🙂

    They can be tamed. It takes many hours and a schedule daily. Working slow.and not making fast or loud movements when starting with them. They also don't like some colors and smells. Perfumes and strong scents effect their breathing and they will try to get away

      When I went in to the store to get a reptile there was one green iguana one bearded dragon. Not going to lie I had NO experience and was green to the situation. The lady says to me for a beginner you should get the iguana...... 🤣🤣🤣 They are easier to deal with after two years research in to making sure I'm doing the best at all times for my iguana I realized that the lady lied. She had to get that iguana out the store. She was getting way to big to still be in the lil "box" she was in. But I wouldn't change a thing. Lol. She just right over there tearing up my curtains (literally right out the window) as I type. 🤣🤣🤣 But I love her.

    Do you recommend a rescue or a reptile store iguana???

  • @Chudchanning
    @Chudchanning 2 года назад +1

    Yeah, iguanas are NOT a beginner pet at all, especially if you couldn't handle a leopard gecko previously (they're literally the easiest low maintenance reptile to keep). you want captive bred lizards for the optimal experience, most pet stores have imported wild or farmed iguanas which can be harder to tame due to lack of human interaction. the damn pet stores sell them for dirt cheap which makes people think they're easy to keep. Staying away from the Lizard all together the first year was also a bad move, they don't need months to adjust, just a couple days. You want to interact as much as possible and as consistently as possible to have success. I'm sure I don't need to say anything about not grabbing by the tail being she's on her third one. Personally I would have refused the lizard as soon as the dumb ass employee broke the tail but I understand the impulse to make it all happen and follow through with a purchase anyway. The reptile hobby is fun but in the future please try to look alittle deeper into an animal before making your mind up, almost every reptile video on here would have told you never in a million years to get an iguana if you looked alittle deeper into it. In the end they're really awesome and it's a rewarding experience but on your next go around I recommend researching months ahead of time and being 100% prepared with everything before you have someone buy whatever it may be. I'm getting into dart frogs and have the setup settling in right now, I'm still a month out from actually putting frogs in it. it was tough not to buy them the other day because the shop had like 50 of them ready ready sell, but my viarium is just not dialed in yet with humidity and temperature and rooted plants. The goal for any animal is to thrive, not just survive. Hope your Iguana is doing well still, props on admitting your mistakes and overcoming the tough situation

    Hi awesome video, I was wondering if you could help me out with this problem I have my 3ft 4inch iguana I got from underground reptiles eats rarely I’ve walked in on her eating before a few times but other then that she won’t eat her salads she really only eats the mango slices I give her but not in front of me she rarely eats any other fruits or veggies she’s pretty scared of me and doesn’t want to be messed with sometimes she will be ok with getting pet but usually she walks to the other side of the room and get defensive.

    • @DIYReptiles
      @DIYReptiles  3 года назад

      It takes a lot of time. My iguana used to hide whenever I was in the room, and she would never eat in front of me. After three years of having her just get used to me, she now comes down to her eating area whenever I open the enclosure. It just takes a lot of time for them to get used to you, so I suggest keeping yours in a well-traveled area of the house or in your bedroom. It should eventually get more used to you.
      If you want it to eat more than just mango, just stop giving it mango. Fruit should only make up a small part of their diet, so it definitely needs to be eating a variety of greens. If it is not eating greens, it eventually will if that is all you give it. If you do not want to go with that method, you could mix up mango with other foods, and slowly stop adding mango.
