Imagine if Magic stayed one more season to play with Shaq and Kobe.
He’d be beefing with Shaq before the all star break and Kobe would be on the bench an extra season...
Yeah, Shaq and Kobe would be pissed af
FoshoGotFlow totally, I love when beef happens in the NBA
Imagine that, he may have been able to show Kobe how to pass
Shaq will have AIDS and Kobe HIV
To think if Magic didn't get aids and Larry's back didn't rage quit(or if Len Bias hadn't died and possible became a star) that could've played up until the 90s.
Bird quit because of his bad back
Ryuken you must be special

And Jordan would have to get past the Celtics after the Pistons. And Larry just about won every playoff series against Jordan.

Magic Johnson 2019
We could have had Shaq, baby Kobe, and old man magic
Possibly ruining the Lakers 2000s dynasty even further given what Andy just covered.
Magic Johnson's relationship with the Lakers is so interesting... It's like healthy and unhealthy at the same time.

I know this has probably been said multiple times but, my god, the sax music defines Andy Hoops.
Clarence exactly bruh that sax lol
I completely did not remember he came back in 96 until a few years ago. When I looked at some of the stats and highlights, I was shocked how well he played being out 5 years and being in his mid-30s.
other interesting notes: 1. Ceballos had actually dubbed himself "the Chise" (the franchise); 2. When Magic joined the team and first began working out, it was reported that "teammates laughed at him during practice"; 3. When Ceballos "missed some games," he literally went missing, i.e., the Lakers didn't know where he was; 4. When Ceballos went missing, Magic was asked about him at a press conference. Magic's response: "Forget Cedric."
thanks for adding that, when Magic was playing and putting up pretty impressive stats for a guy who hadn't played NBA level ball for pretty much 6 years, the young impressionable me at the time thought that was just his greatness when Magic probably was going up and down telling management that he wasn't going to tolerate no playing time, players not giving him the ball every possession and him getting the first crack to score when that probably or rather safe to say was the case. What's undeniable is that Magic returning to active with LA turned their record around by about a dozen games or so. The season would have been otherwise forgettable and end in an embarrassing first round exit to maybe San Antonio as a 7th seed. Maybe they wouldn't have had to work so hard negotiating getting Kobe being at like #15 or #16. That would make an interesting video! That time also was not very exciting to be a Lakers fan and the big story coming in was that rookie Frankie King would be another gem that genius GM Jerry West uncovered yet again but not this time along with bench player Derek Strong joining them being the best thing in years to happen in recent history.
@@allclassallthetime4739 it was a frustrating season for me to watch because I felt like Magic should have been running the point, but instead, they had him posting up. It wasn't until the playoffs that the coach realized they were a better team with Magic at the one, but by then it was too late, i.e., you can't attempt a new scheme going INTO the playoffs and expect good results.
@@uncletony6210 yep, I love talking basketball! You'd have to agree potentially they were with Magic in the top 4? The Bulls were in a league of their own, but absolutely they can make a case after Chicago. Instantly adding Magic evened out the length and anticipated mismatches and I wouldn't think that the Utahs and Seattles were clear better teams out west. It wasn't their size, length and physicals that let them down, no way that being to blame.
Magic Johnson is my father's favorite player. Thank you for this Andy!
Feel so bad for Magic. Would’ve been so crazy to see Magic, Kobe and Shaq play together on the same team. Even if it was for only one season
Unfortunately we'd still be stuck with Del Harris for a bit longer which clearly held the Lakers back IMO.
i was watching the whole thing and paying attention to every detail that summer they chased Shaq. That wouldn't have been possible. Magic's $7 million salary had to be renounced in order to clear their cap. The first offer was under $100 million, then they gave away their past two previous draft picks to the Grizzlies to bring the offer to $120 million. The rules would prohibit Magic from re-signing with the team that renounced him and he would have had to wait a year to meet the free agency rules at the time, even to take some minimum salary.
"How good was Eddie Jones, actually" video please!
Only player to bench kobe
Eddie and Kobe were fine, even thought everything knows on defense
Van Exel too!
The word actually is completly unnecessary.

@@Professional_Dirtbag_Hippie actually no not really because LeBron is now competing for another ring and magic just came back for some money and to take some ownership of the lakers. lebron joined a shit lakers team and the team magic joined was actually a really good team the year before. the 2017 2018 Lakers where garbage would take multiple season to develop to become at best average so no its not exactly the same LeBron took the L Lakers and made them a ring contender this season and planned to sstay for 4 years when he joined the lakers and majic only came back for one year that's actually a lot different then what magic did his last season.their are some similarities but the reason that lakers 2018 2019 team didn't win alot was because of injuries
@ I ment more the seasons in a vacuum not the overall results. Obviously the Lakers LeBron joined were not as good as the Lakers Magic joined, but its this all time great joining a young team an there's drama the all time great has his leadership questioned and the players seem to have issues with said all time great

Man I love your vids man I can watch them all day keep it up bro
Hi Andy Keep up the grind u da GOAT
Top 5 player of all time and could have easily been considered the GOAT if he did not have to retire early. His career numbers would have been crazy
My favorite player is Magic Johnson and I don't think his years after 1991 would've been that good unfortunately. Maybe it was his HIV, but he slowed down considerably in that finals series against the Bulls. He was also the one leaving Paxson wide open in the 4th quarter as he was gassed.
The younger Magic would easily dribble past any full court pressure and by 1988, he was relying on other players to advance the ball if he was pressured too much in the backcourt like what Dumars did.
Love your vids man. Keep me coming!
Good one keep up the good work
Imagine if magic played with shaq and Kobe and they later traded for tracy McGrady like they were rumored to want to do
its a shame the Greatest point guard ever missed 5 years of his career.
We have seen the best of him. It is not like Muhammed Ali who was banned in his absolute prime. No way that Magic would have won anything at that point as a starting point guard of the Lakers. And he was not one for a mentoring role gradually taking a backseat. The Lakers would have been mired in mediocrity
@@omnivorous65 we saw his peak but watching Magic that last ‘91 season he was better than ever in my opinion. He was hitting 3s, posting up anyone guarding him on the block and could still dish at a high level
@@KDubb-ws9zc He had some serious mileage accumalated at that point and his knees were in such a bad shape that he could bend his legs anymore. He was running on some bad, bad pins. He could no longer defending anyone and definitely not point guards. That Lakers team was no longer a contender.
@@omnivorous65 he did look a couple steps slower. His game at that point looks more like he was beating guys with his mind ala Larry Bird
@@KDubb-ws9zc At that point Magic might get you through the regular season but comes playoff time being such a glaring defensive liability is getting exploited. Mercilessly.
Good job Andy 👍.

Arguably the most famous Los Angeles sports figure of the 80's? Who else could it be?
Still the greatest & most important Laker of all time. Dominated his rookie year, 5 chips, & 9 NBA Finals appearences.

It's funny because Magic was still the best player on the Lakers. Even in this season.
no he wasnt, they made it in the second round last year with that core, he was the biggest name, if he played point guard and gave up the ball it would have been better, since ceballos van excel, joes could easliy score
@@zo62 Magic had the highest winshares per 48 minutes and the the highest BPM so from an analytic standpoint he was there best player. From a basic box score perspective he was averaging basically 15 points 7 assists 6 rebounds 1 steal on 86 ft% 38% 3 point 47% field goal. Nick Van Exel and Cedric Ceballos were both negative defenders according to DefensiveBoxPlusMinus. The Lakers were beating their opponents by an average of 5 points with him on the floor. Compared to only 2 points with Cedric. Magic was by far their best player for the 32 games he played.
@@Watchingvideoslikeu dude numbers don’t mean a whole and statistics they had a flow and they were disrupted
@@zo62 Yeah but he was a bad defender, who turned the ball over and didn’t create for others, yes he could score, he didn’t provide enough scoring to justify the warts in his game. If Magic played 82 games it would’ve been clear he was better
@@Watchingvideoslikeu He was absolutely NOT better than Eddie Jones in 1996. The advanced tab on basketball reference isn't analytics. Magic was not a good defender and it showed in the 1996 Playoffs.

First i love this videos ❤️❤️❤️
Good vid
I remember being so glad when he had left in the summer of 96.
This video is clearly showing what type of character Johnson really was in 96. You don´t see it when sb is everybody´s darling...things like this usually surface in situations when sb is struggling keeping up to his image. Magic Johnson was used to standards that he, himself, wasn´t living up to any more, and he still went to sleep with the feeling that he was the main attraction on the team, performance-wise.
If only the Lakers hadn´t made his bed so fine - he would have absolutely crashed in a situation where he really would have had to play for the team without all the other players and the system clustering around him. But that would have damaged Lakers-heritage AND he was a co-owner of the team, and money buys beauty in Los Angeles (and elsewhere). Anyway, this video is set much closer to reality than all the happy-comeback-compilations out there.
This changed my whole opinion about magic.
LaBum Blames How?
@@jazzcritic3587 he just ruined the franchise back n forth, what do you mean how wtf lol he a fuckn public figure with a fake ass smile.
Yes, I was really surprised at this.
I just watched, within the last 2 weeks or so, about how effective was his comeback.
Didn't realise all the friction that followed.
I suppose the best way to have dealt with it was to say to the players:
Hey, we might not have picked him to be on our team BUT
He is a favoured son of the Lakers, so we're going to have to get used to it.
He is only going to be here for a few years max.
He can show us lots of things.
If we stick together for a few years, we'll be a great team.
Not easy to swallow, but taking the long view is a good idea.
Never mind!!

Look Here Look Listen! @6:01 Van Exel is the Deez Nutz guy! Big Ups!
He permanently retired after he realized the players were not guarding him seriously knowing he is positive for Hiv...only M.J who didnt mind it and still strictly guarding him in his play....magic was so elated for that..
One of the best goat's
As good as he was as a teammate I would’ve been upset. When you have an owner’s mentality as a player it’s toxic to everyone and that can break a team the lakers should’ve warned magic to not act like some minority owner when on the court and when talking about his teammates
Imagine being pissed off that you have to play with Magic Johnson lmao

@@skunkugly yup that pretty crazy right.
You would think that some of these players would have welcomed a legitimate chance at competing for at least a finals appearance, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Besides, had Magic's comeback gone better, there's no guarantee the Lakers would have still ended up with Shaq and Kobe
Come on man! Why did u remind me Magic came back! I like to think his last time playing basketball was the dream team. He ruined our team by coming back in 96. Ceballos was an all star and Magic held him back.

Bro can you make a story about the 2000-2004 los angeles lakers?the story about shaq and kobe thanks bro.
As much as he started as my favorite player in 89, I didn't have the exciting enjoyment of having him come out of retirement, I just didn't have that happiness of having him back, I didn't want him to get in the way of the talent on the team, cause the season before in 94-95, the Lakers finished 5th in the West, with a 48-34 record, 15 gm improvement from the yr before that, the 94-95 team still til this day, remains my favorite nontitle Laker team, I enjoyed that Laker team, that improved team, drafted Eddie Jones, got an experience coach in Del Harris, signed Ceballos, even though for an unknown reason, I didn't accept Ceballos as a Laker, didn't want him to help us, that 95 team I enjoyed a lot, had a decent season. The following year in 95-96, Magic returns in January that yr, just refused to get excited about it, wasn't enthused with him or the news, as much as he started as my favorite player in 89, that excitement just wasn't meant to come to me, cause I was so enthused with the 94-95 talent at that point like Vlade Divac, Elden Campbell, Eddie Jones, Nick Van Exel, Sedale Threatt, Anthony Peeler, Tony Smith, George Lynch, Sam Bowie, and even Lloyd Daniels, Antonio Harvey, etc, just didn't like Magic getting in the way of that in 95-96.

My dad consider this guy as the GOAT and he would always tell me how he could have eclipsed jordan if he never had AIDS
Before he was announced as HIV positive, he and the Lakers where starting to decline and most likely would have just been a top 5 in the West if Magic hadn't retired
@@ericthomas7560 And even if the Lakers had kept winning the West, I don't see them beating the Bulls in the 90s. That said, Magic's credentials don't exactly pale in comparison to Jordan's as it stands, especially considering that Jordan shortened his own career.
Ceballos was not traded right after the season. He played with shaq and kobe briefly and was traded for Robert Horry.
Imagine how social media would have reacted to a key player on one of the most popular franchises in all of pro sports, literally going AWOL on the team during the season with no advance notice 😭
As tumultuous as that 95-96 season was for the Lakers after Magic's return, they still managed to win 53 games and host a playoff series in the 1st round. Of course they didn't make it past that round against Houston because the younger players and Magic were just about completely disconnected.
Do a video about the 3 j’s
We the Lakers fan base would like to continue to ignore this event and erase this from our very stellar and outstanding history ... please don’t remind us Andy...
You should've mentioned his time in Sweden and Denmark. I think he played like three games in Sweden.
The GOAT
Imagine if Larry Bird had no injured back. He played with Radja, Walker and Rookie Pierce.
But he did have an injured back and that was the weakness of 80s players. The conditioning methods, surgeries, offseason workouts and even diets were still primitive. This is what pushes Jordan a notch above Larry and Magic. People overrate the whole "killer instinct" thing with Jordan when it was his ability to stay injury free is why he was able to continue to win.
U should do how good was jermaine O’Neal
rice farmer he did i think
rice farmer he did already
I remember when this happend. I thought Magic was so hypocritical when he bashed Van Exel but did the same thing.
goodfellabeats He still had a great comeback story teammates r ungreatful u have one of the goats and u dont want to play with him
Magic was trying 2 show them the way but the kids couldn't get over everything being about Magic...especially when they were winning.
So at what age did he officially retire
95-96 Gary Payton and the Sonics won the NBA West and lost in the 96 Finals to Michael Jordan and the Bulls.
In that situation, the entire organization should have stood their ground and said "If you want to return, you adjust to the team. The team does not adjust to you. You're not the star you once were."
We're talking about an organization which paid Kobe so much in his twilight years that the salary cap was ruined.
The 1995-1996 Lakers (pre Shaq and Kobe era) did well before magic returned, but after magic returned, things were getting crazy mid season:Cedric ceballos left the team to jet ski at the lake, Nick Van Exel was suspended seven games for shoving a ref, days later magic got suspended 3 games for bumping a ref and this was vlade divac’s final season with the lakers and was traded to the hornets via the 1996 nba draft and Shaq signed with the lakers after the 1995-1996 season...
Y yo mic sound like that? 😂
Ahhhh, so Magic completely ruins teams when he's not in his prime playing for them
they were clearly better with him.
They were better with him but everyone were in they're feelings. Call it what it was he had HIV and they didn't really like that.
