For example blocking Isiah Thomas was kind of petty not saying Isiah wasn't petty either. The Olympic thing was way more petty because mike used his influence to block someone's else because no one is going to cut mike from a basketball team.

About HALF THE TEAM didn't want to play with Isiah - MJ more "went along with the rest" by far than started it.
That's been told by several of the Dream Team, it was the MEDIA that MISREPORTED it as being a "MJ issue".
It looks to have been more of a MAGIC issue (over Isiah's comments when Magic announced he had AIDS) and a BIRD issue ("he'd just be an average player if he was black" public commentary out of Isiah)
Would you blame MJ if it was LAIMBEER that had been blocked?

I grew up a Lakers fan in the 80s. I hated the Celtics, but the one guy on their team that I respected and could still enjoy his brilliance was Bird. Man, they could both play.
Here is the thing. You made Nikola Jokic a 6'9 small forward, make him a thrash talking asshole, one who will dive for looseballs and will not give a shit against anybody. Thats Larry Bird.
I’m a Celtics fan. I grew up during the Kobe era, and I feel the same way towards him. I hated the lakers, but you can’t help but respect/appreciate greatness.
Larry Bird and Magic Johnson rivalry in the 1980s saved the NBA and Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls elevated the NBA to even greater heights. This was a vert good breakdown on two of the most iconic/greatest NBA players of all time.
With the Bad Boy Pistons sandwiched in between

- Pacers lost to Lakers with Bird as HC in the '00 NBA Finals
- Bird resigned as Pacers' President of Bball Ops. when Paul George wanted to go to LA after the '16-'17 season

As an asian person who watches football and basketball i gotta give this one to Bird vs Johnson, messi & ronaldo rivalry was great but it is because they both have ' el classico ' status in their peak rivalry, el classico is a must watch for a football fan with/without ronaldo& messi meanwhile Bird vs Johnson rivalry singlehandedly bring NBA outta bankruptcy and put both of their respective teams on the map, so in conclusion bird vs magic is really the best rivalry in sports history
Agreed the el classico will always have that hype but bird and magic started their own rivalry whereas Messi and Ronaldo were just on an already existing one

It's hilarious how both of these legends just lived rent free in each others heads for the longest time. It clearly elevated their game.
Based on how badass Bird was on thrashtalking it's hard to believe he was shy about social things! Well one learns something new every day!
What Bird and Magic did for the sport was major. They probably quite saved the NBA and made it great and interesting again. Jordan then continued that a bit later on. They definitely have earned all the praises they have gotten and still end up getting. True legends of the sport!
Because Bird and Magic are so intertwined together I really can't rank one above the other. That's why the 2nd place on my all time greatest list has been shared by Magic and Bird together. Jordan is the GOAT of course.
People generally trash talk, I believe, when they secretly feel insecure. Which makes sense for Bird. At least he could back it up!
I rather have Bird he did 86 season on broken back. On Lakers he does better. With him 2nd worst team went to ECF. Without MJ Bulls go on deep playoff run.

I like both of them. Both look like they play with tons of heart and drive, and want to win over anything. And thats my favorite trait in a player, the most driven. It sucks that I wasnt alive for their careers. I wish I couldve seen them play.

Their 1979 Championship game is still the most watched college basketball game at all time their matchups in the regular season were must watch games they helped usher in the Golden age of the NBA you can't think of one without thinking of the other.

The best rivalry in sports history has got to be Ronaldo and Messi. But in terms of basketball I’ll take Magic and Bird. They saved the nba. MJ grew the nba. Without them we wouldn’t have this amazing sport
To me the rivalry of bird and magic would edge out Ronaldo and Messi simply because the NBA would literally not exist without them something Ronaldo and Messi's rivalry can't say as football would have survived without them.

@@tomatoit7033 with football it was already the worlds number 1 sport even if one league shut down people could see another league. For basketball it was just the nba the ABA had just folded and was not that popular so if not for magic and larry's rivalry making the nba successful the nba fails and now basketball would not be talked about as one of the popular sports in the world.

The relationship between Magic and Bird is very comparable to the relationship between Russell and Chamberlain. They were the fiercest of competitors/rivals and yet they were close friends as well that had tremendous respect for each other. I think that the greatest legacy of Magic is that he faced Bird 4 times in a Championship setting: once in College and 3x in the NBA Finals, and Magic's team won 3 of 4. Nobody beats Bird 3 of 4 to win a Championship--nobody--except for Magic. The one time Bird got the best of Magic was in the '84 Finals--one of the biggest roll-overs of all-time as the Lakers had multiple opportunities to win that Chip and just crumbled under the relentless pressure from Bird and his teammates. So Magic, just as easily could have been 4-0 against Bird. However beating Bird 3 of 4 is the stuff of legends.

This two are the real saviors of the NBA. Not Jordan; it's Bird and Johnson. I maybe born way after their era but if you know how the NBA was before those 2 came along, you would also agree. Although not to diminish Jordan's contribution since he was the one who made the NBA more famous world-wide.

The rest of us NBA fans in the 80s hated both the Lakers and the Celtics, but when they played each other it was required watching to see a serious physical war. That was a man's game when they played, not some smooth pretty boy dunk and 3 point contest, but gritty and ugly. Like two SEAL teams going at it with no quit.

The whole world was watching. Federer vs Nadal. The Yankees vs Red Sox. Each of these had rivalries that could be said to be the greatest. I love that era of basketball, and they were what made the NBA, but there were other intense competitors that cannot be overlooked

Bird and Magic's rivalry was great and revived the NBA don't get me wrong but you could have just said greatest rivalry in American sports history . It's disrespectful for Americans to just assume that America is the whole world when there ' s the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry , which would be the equivalent of Jordan and LeBron playing in the same era for the biggest rivals in the sport 's history (for example Lakers vs Celtics) and all of that in the most popular sport in the world by far .

If Larry never injured his back, I doubt the Bulls would've won the '91 finals. The Celtics would've likely finished first in the east, meaning the Bulls would've had to play the Pistons in the second round, and then the Celtics in the Conference Finals. The Bulls probably wouldn't have been able to pull through and it would've been another Lakers-Celtics finals between Bird and Magic for the final time.
