    What an amazing resource. Usually I’m only tracing sondes and I’m not a utility locator. Always having locates beforehand; During an excavaton, things can get messy and it’s nice to be able to confirm where things are in the meantime.

    Did the image at 23:38 show one clamp being used to induct the signal and another clamp some distance away being used to pick up the signal off the pipe and ground it? If so, i am thinking thats a nice solution if you cant ground the cables within the pipe.

    • @SubsurfaceSolutions

      The other ring is a Receiver ring clamp to verify the correct cable. It doesn't help ground the cable.

    Hi, just purchased radio dectection 7100..with transformer to-121..is there any training videos for locating phase to phase faults ????

    • @SubsurfaceSolutions
      @SubsurfaceSolutions  4 года назад +1

      Sorry we didn't cover fault locating in the video. Maybe at a later date. The TX-121 Isolation Transformer for phase to phase faults is sort of a specialty part. You should be able to get some 1 on 1 training for it from the outfit that sold you the two kits. Contact Radiodetection if you're unsure of whom to contact. We handle a 9 state territory in the upper Midwest of the USA.

    Great video, I learned alot. I'm still having trouble locating Armored Fiber cables. Do you have Any training or thoughts that might help?
    I've got a RD7100 TL

    • @SubsurfaceSolutions
      @SubsurfaceSolutions  3 года назад

      Make sure the far end of the cable armor is grounded and hook direct to the armor. Make sure you have at least 20mA's transmitting. Use 512Hz or 8kHz. If there are other cables in the same conduit or near by make sure they aren't grounded.

    • @SubsurfaceSolutions
      @SubsurfaceSolutions  3 года назад

      Make sure the fiber sheeth is ground on the far end so your locate signal has somewhere to complete the circuit. Once you lower the resistance you should be able to use 512Hz to avoid bleeding into other lines

    • @travisberan7010
      @travisberan7010 Месяц назад +1

      Any lower frequency. 512Hz is used a lot for fiber. Just make sure the other end is grounded.

    • @SubsurfaceSolutions
      @SubsurfaceSolutions  Месяц назад

      512Hz if the far end is grounded. However, if you're around underground power lines you may want to move it a little higher to avoid interference.

    • @SubsurfaceSolutions
      @SubsurfaceSolutions  Месяц назад

      If this is a electrical primary you can use a thumper. If this is any other type of cable you can possibly use a TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer).

    I slipped and completely ate dirt during a locate in freezing rain last year and I watched my RD7100 slide down the road. One truck just drove by like nothing happened (I know that they saw me but just didn’t care).
    We were both fine in the end; I would never intentionally hurt my favourite tool/toy. I had an earlier version that had a cylindrical rocker that I loved too. That poor soul died in the rain and was too obsolete to replace.

    What's the difference between radio and power modes and when would I want to use them?

    • @travisberan7010
      @travisberan7010 Год назад

      Every metallic object is reflecting radio waves traveling around the earth and Radio mode will pick this up. Power mode will pick up the 60Hz harmonics produced by live electric lines.

    • @SubsurfaceSolutions
      @SubsurfaceSolutions  Месяц назад

      Nothing above will affect a RD unit. Electrical below may be a problem. Every utility inside a building is normally bonded to each other and the building, which causes you to light it all up. Isolating and getting a good ground is key, but inside a building that hard. We may shoot a video soon on this.

    I’m confused about the clamp. Every time I use it I get no signal at all! I’ve been told by everyone it just clamps on and works.

    • @travisberan7010
      @travisberan7010 Год назад

      Use it in 8kHz or higher. You should be able to hear a high pitched squeal in 8kHz when transmitting. Make sure the transmitter shows a ring clamp icon. If you don't see the ring icon when it's plugged in you could have a faulty connection socket. If you have the icon, don't hear a high pitch tone in 8kHz you could have a faulty ring clamp and it need to be sent in for repair. Maybe you know another locator tech and you can compare.

      Line locating isn't easy. The responsibility of protecting the underground utilities is heavy. Good line locators usually are:
      1. Confident Self-starter - much of the time working solo, in diverse locations, able to take initiative and assume responsibility.
      2. Technical - sophisticated electronic equipment when locating utilities
      3. Personable - skills to be able to deal with wide variety of personalities
      4. Attention to Detail - understand reports, utility plans, and documentation visual inspections prior to locating and marking
      5. Spatial Awareness - organized knowledge of objects in relation to oneself in that given space
      6. Teachable - Staying humble and recognize that there is always something to learn
      7. Problem-solver - identify problems quickly and find the best solution to a problem
      8. Entrepreneurial - not afraid to get your hands dirty and take pride in your work
      9. Realistic - You need to be realistic in assessing you own abilities - you are not superman; you do not have x-ray vision and you can't bend the bars of a jail.
