Big thanks to both Tom for putting me through to Dale, you guys saved me on this one! Here’s another video about strapping! ruclips.net/video/48q1D5P82CE/видео.html
Out here 25 yrs pulling step and skateboard, I've always called it "belly wrap" or "choke strapping". Belly strap: strapping over a layer of product, like pipe. Belly wrap : strapped entirely around the product. It is a very good way to secure round bar, bundles of tube. Stay safe brother
Learned something new! I'm looking into getting into flatbedding but I'm trying to learn before I make the switch. Awesome videos, you're really helping a lot! Thank you!
Brian I always learn something from your videos and the experience you have learned as a driver and owner operator, so thanks again brother you are a big help to so many.
Had this exact load shift on me...on the interstate. Had to use portables on the load and then use the wench straps to secure it to the deck. I keep 6 portables in the box for this type of situation now.
I believe it’s called a choke straps. Usually do the same thing on a rebar load. And yes I hate 8 ft but I will tarping back to back 8 ft loads ugh lol. Great information.. be safe and have a blessed day
@@DrivenTrucking , a tip if you are checkering pipe or things like that. Put your straps on the deck letters down and backwards. Put the chain on the winch side and the open end on the other side. Put the a row of bundles on then take the chain side bring it across. Then take the open side bring it across. Saves time not feeding straps under the load. Keeper safe, yep been hauling flatbed in Canada and USA ten years coming up. Always something new to haul.
When I worked in the oilfield that was called Belly wrapping it is used in pipe from shifting side to side like you said that one is just higher from the trailer keep up the good work and always keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down
The day you stop learning is the day to hang up the keys... well put! I love learning efficient techniques with the "work smarter not harder" mindset (as well as C.Y.A. and K.I.S.S.). Keeping my health and safety, as well as everyone else's first and foremost. No one ever got fined for having an extra strap or chain than minimum requirement. I got to tarp rebar tomorrow morning...blech!
I know that’s right! I’m always looking for a way to work smarter and not harder. That extra strap or chain could save you or another family’s life and that’s how I try to look at it. Good luck with that rebar
Dang dude. I dropped off a load of steel pipe in Owatonna MN this morning and had to bounce over to Roseville MN to pickup some steel plates. Every load ive had last week and this week so far have had to be tarped. I know exactly how you feel about those long days. Thats Flatbed life.
Over my years of flatbed I have learned that technique works best for that type of application also I wanted to let you know that strap technique is called AN "A" frame strap because of the shape looks like an A similar to butterfly straps on slinki coils awesome videos.
Us old guy as you call us some of us call that butterfly strapping offended used on bad slenkewire.keep it up you will be best of the best. Keep trucking wop wop$$😎😎😎🅰️✔
Not old just refined 😬 I love learning and always have my ears open. I like calling it a butterfly strap I think I’ll roll with that. Thanks a lot Joey 👍🏻
Gut wrap. Usually use it for round objects that may want to roll sideways or tip over like a pipe or excavator booms, or bundles that may want to separate like rebar or bundled pipe. Also like to use it for trailer tongues to keep them centered. An improved technique that i like to use is to put a winch on both ends of the strap so you can control the tension on both ends of the strap( I use straps that got damaged near the hook for this. I cut the hook end off so I have an endless strap. You could also feed the end of a good strap through a winch, wrap the load and feed through a winch on the other side and just secure the excess strap and hook)
I heard that if you increase the horse power of the engine the mpg can be as high as 12 on empty and about 9 on full load. Probably have to find a truck "hacker" to go into the system and change the settings.
I’m new to flatbeds.... love the channel.... I do the western 11..... very helpful vids my company doesn’t teach us much at all just enough to get by . Very helpful and keep up the vids
Wait until you are 76, tired is my middle name, the straps I had years ago were 2 inches wide, only used them to help keep tarps from flying around. Went onto rgn no straps used, that bow tie is a real good way, it's great you pass that on to others, pull toy here.
What would help is rubber mats or wide strips of rubber between the top and bottom levels of the shelving racks. Metal on metal ain't gonna work and the racks will move for sure.
Hauled a load of bundled cables used for concrete slabs. They look like slinkies laid across the trailer. You do the same bowtie tying the coils together alternating directions on straps. This keeps them straight and keeps them from shifting side to side and front to back. The only thing you have to be careful on hauling those pallet stands is to watch the edges and use edge protectors when bowtieing.
Lol, thanks bud 👍🏻👊🏻 I see your other comment and I will get to it when I can put some thought to it. I appreciate your comments and your words of encouragement, thank you very much Jerry
You should do choke chains on the the front and back just like a girder. Chains take care of un stability and stop loads from going thru your sleeper. You should always have a chain on each corner just like a container on a flat bed. Just relying on straps is dangerous. Those straps will cut, one at a time until half of your belts are gone. Should have a chain on all the corners
Really Im first!! hot damn!! Great Video Man, Look forward to seeing what crazy madness is in store in the future!! Stay safe and keep the shiny side up!
I've only ever pulled pneumatic tanker and van so I don't know much about flatbedding but man you sure share some great tips and tricks 👍🏻👍🏻 Also when you talk about your fuel mileage do you say what your ECM is telling you or are you sharing actual milage divided by gallons?
Thanks nasty, I appreciate it. For about six months I compared my trip amateur on my dash to actual fuel mileage divided at the pumps and every single day for six months, they were never more than .1 miles per gallon off so now I just trust my ECM
Great strapping yet I think that middle one will work loose. As you say the winch side will come up tight an because the strap makes four hard turns it might just pull three of the four turns. Did it move any? Very informative. Good video!
Thanks a lot! The load didn’t move an iota LOL, what was crazy is my straps never even worked loose. I checked them probably a good five times but every time there was the same tension. No I did not check the ratchet strap I put in the middle as I couldn’t get to it under the tarps but I believe it had the same tension as when it started.
I think using 4” webb winches on each end of the strap would even the tension of the straps . Securing this style load could be in a direct tie-down method .
I run a 30 Ft. hot shot trailer but have hauled that shelving. The plastic banding the shipper uses is garbage and have heard that other drivers lost lost loads from the same shipper because of them. I'll remember your bow ties the next time! The only tarps I carry are 8 footers and it's a real PITA when your load is just a 1/2" steel plate or a few boiler tubes. I rarely get to use anything but the top rows of D-rings. My next tarps will still be 8 footers with the top D-rings 7 feet apart instead of 9 feet. (can't afford to carry the extra weight on a non-CDL rig).
Thank you for this im new to trucking and have been watching alot of your videos and they all have been a big help i hope to pass ya down the road sometime man
Thanks for the video. I'm having issues at throwing straps when the load is high. My shoulder is about to let go. Any idea on how to send them straps up high and easy?
not sure how long your straps are but if you do it so that twist in strap is on top it will hold it very secure hard to explaine …. for example if it was say steel pipes lay the strap on the bed of trailer first then bring it up over the top on other side loop it under the strap then take hook back to side opposite winch you will end up with a twist on the top that pulls the load together as well as pulls it down will not move at all hope I have explained that ok ( 20 years driving in Australia )
I was wondering how tall the cargo was? would it fit in a conestoga? our company calls it a Reverse Belly Wrap but bow tie works too. keep making the vlogs, very helpful to rookies like me, thank you
Thank you so much I’m glad you enjoyed them. I enjoyed making them. The blue shelving would not have fit under a Conestoga but the orange pieces in the back were actually delivered by a Conestoga that morning. It was a full load of them though.
Belly wrapping is what that’s called bo. Looks good bo! Stay safe out there. Hope to run into ya one day out here. I drive for PGT and been thinking about becoming a lp driver and would love to talk to you about it. Later bo
Well that was definitely a learning opportunity thank you for your videos . 1 question if your winches are on 1 side do you think adding 2” ratchet straps to the opposite side have the same effect as your double winches?
I know I learned something LOL. Yes if you can set the ratchet up the same way as I set up that strap, then it would work exactly the same, it definitely takes two though
i thought choking it would be better with load chokers i think they only suited for 50 mm wide straps not 100 or 150 mm wide straps not belly looping and should have you used carpet pieces on them corner edges of the load or edge protectors too??
We call it X-shaped or some older drivers call it triangular. I'm sure either, but there is the bowtie style we know about is likely to harness the top to the bottom or lower levels well for safety reasons too. Thanks alot anyway.
I've installed that very rack for 25yrs,,, unloading 100s of trailers of that very product,,, not once have I seen more then 2 belly straps and 4 to 6 straps over the top bundle!!!
Regarding those 8 foot drop tarps... It's been suggested to me to instead invest in 2 tarps with 6 foot drops, and 2 foot extensions for each. Do you have an opinion on that set up?
I was actually just talking to a gentleman about extensions. I much prefer 6 foot drops as I don’t use my eight footers very much so as long as it is cost-effective I would say go for it.
@@DrivenTrucking yup... My first trainer mentioned it to me when I recently expressed interest in coming back over to flatbed (pulling food grade liquid bulk currently, but planning to buy my own truck by the end of the year and head to mercertown). It sounded like a solid idea instead of having more tarps to lug around, but hadn't heard it mentioned anywhere else
NarcolepticLTD Yes I had no idea this was an option either but it seems to make good sense as long as they work well. But I have no idea if they actually work well or not
Awesome video, definitely learned something. I'm currently in flatbed training and will be driving only in Canada. I'm just wondering about the straps hooked over the rails, like they teach us it is illegal to have straps hooked over the rails. Is it allowed in the US? Really enjoy watching your videos. 👍💪
Good job. That’s a unique load but who’s to say you have to go all the over with those 30ft straps? Go through the bottom of the top stack instead of over. Make sense? It’s what I woulda tried anyways but the X from moving... good job
Chokers go from one side over the top, then under, and then back over the top to the opposite side, putting a stranglehold on the load. Alternate left to right and so on. I would never use your "bowtie." DOT has a small handbook covering this in detail, as well as Belly securement, and X securement.
Hauled many a load of new and used pallet racking. Never had any of it shift. New should be tightly steel banded. Used can be shaky...lay 2" straps on deck and wrap around the bundle, not to the trailer. Then same as new or used...two straps across bottom of bundle close to deck, fasten to deck. Two straps over top of bundle. Two straps across bottom of upper bundle. Then two straps across top of top bundle within first four feet of end toward tractor, same at the rear of trailer....then fill in every 8 to 10' max across the top. Winches on both sides of trailer and alternate. Instead of winding all the excess strap around winch drum...pull excess thru drum, fold over in 18" or so lengths, tuck behind rubrail and pinch with what your're winding around drum....4 wraps around drum is sufficient and easy to tension straps. Doing them like that makes it easy to handle when they are wet and super easy to undo when frozen....much better to shake them undone rather than fighting to turn winch with frozen strap wrapped around it. Did this since 1985 all over USA and Canada...no issues. Any straps going more than 4' above the deck need to at least a single twist in them....keeps them from vibrating. A vibrating strap will do a lot of damage to freight, make a lot of noise, and can cut itself on all but the smoothest edge. Straps do deteriorate from road salt and uv rays of the sun...store off trailer when not in use. Replace all in the Spring.
looks like a beautiful load going down the road driver ;) and that makes sens too. so I was thinking those curtains you have behind you.... why aren't they blue with your logo on them so when you close them -IT'S A FREAKN GORGEOUS FLAG!! :D lol seriously would look VERY cool

I can’t read it all at the moment but I guarantee you I will. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge, it is appreciated.
Putting 3 to 4 pieces of dunnage across that 1st layer would have helped stabilize the top layer

We call them butterfly straps, similar to how you’d strap slinkies.
