I also was a witness to Pat's amazing recovery and his knowledge graciously bestowed upon me during our time together at his home in Phila.. as Pat was playing gigs again he didn't use his name Martino and was using his birth name. I spent weekend's in Cape May playing alternate weekends with Pat. As I watched him grow back into the incredible player that he was before the tumor. When I saw him starting to use his stage name again I knew he had full recovered and playing more increably then before his anyourism!!! Warmly Pat your forever greatful student, James Pascarella!!!
The very definition of inspiring, thanx for the post - a ton of creative brilliance coupled with old-fashioned guts; very moving, what a guy, and in an age when 'artists' become gods for next to nothing.
wow! I've never seen his father, he was a great singer. I never get tired of listening everything about this amazing genius! I had the oportunity to see him alive, when he came to Brazil, simply MAGICAL !!!
I would love to be able to find a video of that show that's playing at the 5 min and 30 sec mark, what song is that? So groovy! Is that the comeback show at Bottom Line? Because when I look that show up, i find videos where they are wearing different clothes. Did they play more than 1 show for the comeback gigs?
Some times i love Jazz other times its like they just hit what ever note is in the way "Noodling" to me i understand why great Classical players make fun of Jazz, just like when i got to be a little older i understood why Jazz player made fun of The BEatles and rock n roll in general But i must say Rock n Roll and Blues will always be my favorite music but i have learned to love Jazz and Classical music when it sucks it sucks BUT holy shit when it's great it is the Fucking Best !!! Same with rock a ton of crappy rock music But the BEalte and Kinks and Jethro Tull and Zappa and King Crimson and Johny Winter and Jeff Beck and Hendrix at their best is fucking REMARKABLE !!!!!
Of course it's possible I'm wrong..it has keyboards and more "80s" flavour instead of piano/sax like in the record version but the theme's definitely there. Try searching for Pat Martino - Portrait (Nightwings) and judge for yourself! ;-)
RIP Pat - you and your music will never ever be forgotten.

Does anyone know where the version of “Portrait” heard at 4:33 comes from? This is NOT the version on Nightwings.
Is this the same documentary from a few years ago?
+Victor Saumarez Yes. It is available on DVD from Phil Fallo, who produced it.
