Consummate players. Les fills beautifully and takes his time to find spaces to accent. Doesn't try to step on Pat's flying. Really a joy to hear these two together.

and more martino records!!! smiling when you play this bad is a sign of real class. he does not play his style, nor his guitar, but, good or bad, he doesnt complain and does not blame it on the guitar or anything... and still enjoys being with this legends' legend named les Paul. I call it class!!!!

When he was much younger Pat Martino had a stroke and couldn't play guitar anymore, so he relearned how to play by listening to his own records. One of my favourite guitarists. The album Footprints is high up there for me.

absolutely beautiful. you can feel the love. the first tune is "i'm confessin that i love you" that they played on pat's "all sides now" cd. les & pat have a long history with pat's dad bringing pat to les at something like age 11 and les being very impressed with the young "upstart". their friendship continued from there. thanks for sharing.

I attended a Les Paul show at the Iridium in '98 and was surprised at the appearance of Pat Martino and the unannounced jam session. If this event only happened once, then I was in the club during the recording of this video. Pat is one of my favorites, but I made note how using Les's guitar setup and sound did not complement his style.
Thanks! This brings back pleasant memories of late night music clubs in Manhattan

One of the better “star” duets. Les knows the arrangement and Pat leaves harmony space amidst the flurry to let Les’s guitar sing through. Although I would have jacked up Les in the mix, ever so slightly. Pat is a class act and a jazz as jazz can get.

By this point in his life, Les' arthritis in his hands was bad enough that he had to be economical in his playing. I attended a show in Dallas, Texas in '75 or '76 that was called The Steel Guitar-Jazz Guitar Summit. Les, Howard Roberts, Herb Ellis, and I think Bucky Pizarrelli were there. The Pedal Steel players were Buddy Emmons, Curley Chalker, Doug Jernigan, and Julian Tharpe. The bass player was Slam Stewart and the drummer was Louie Bellson. Anyway, Les overplayed terribly that night. The emcee finally had to call him out for walking all over everybody. He said something like, "Les, let somebody else play, dammit!"

    Paul Martino was a genius.
His “Symmetrical Parental Forms” is brilliant.
He saw two chords as being the starting points, or “parents” of other chords.
The Augmented triad (1-3-#5), by FLATTENING any one note, forms 3 major triads, and by SHARPENING any one note forms 3 minor triads (and the relative minors of those 3 majors).
The other “symmetrical parent” chord is the Diminished 7th chord (1-b3-b5-bb7).
Move any one note DOWN and you’ll create 4 different Dominant 7th chords; move them UP instead and you’ll parent 4 different Half-Diminished 7th chords (mi7b5).
    - - -
So 6 other triads from Augmented ones, and 8 other 7th chords from Dim7 chords … got it?
    - - -
There’s much more to Martino’s observations.
He saw those two chords as special on the guitar, which they are!
It takes a genius to see things in a fresh way; and I’ll probably be spending the rest of my days on this new approach.
    - I’m pooped from all that “parenting”. (Sorry.)-
    - Rip Pat Martino
(“He’ll kick your ass.” - Les Paul)
