I recently heard Nick's "12x2" album and was blown away by his creativity and great sound. Then after watching this video, I was blown away again to find out he's a two finger player on a banjo without a tonering. Outside of the "strict bluegrass" world are so many different styles of music and so many ways that individuals express themselves on their instruments. Nick is an inspiration.

I am so glad I found this. I started playing many years ago exclusively two finger Scruggs style and thought I was weird because no one else did it. I’ve tried to convert to three finger but two finger is so ingrained and comfortable why change? Play to your strengths. My Vega Little Wonder doesn’t have a tone ring either! I too am an anomaly in Bluegrass. A great RUclips and I’ll like subscribe and start following Nick.

I started five string a year ago, three finger came hard for me, one day I started playing two finger totally unaware there was a two finger style., A year on I love it. I wish I could get someone to critique my playing , as it's totally my own style.. your interview gave me hope...I am normal after all. Ps .I do have a short clip on utube.

I teach using Zoom, Sundays through Thursdays. Most folks do recurring lessons but I'm happy to do just one to give feedback and some long-term concepts to work on if that feels better. So if you are interested and can use Zoom on your phone, tablet, or computer, we can give it a shot!

I’m just learning to play and I’m learning 2FTL because I really enjoy that old time sound and want to learn to sing along. I like Scruggs stuff but it just seems like that’s what EVERYBODY plays.

Thanks for this great interview! I have only been aware of Nick for a couple of years. Such a truly unique style. BTW--you may already know this but Bill Rickard makes 10:1 banjo tuners. Seems like a good idea to me. I am a 3 finger old-time player. Not unique, but still not a lot of us around.
