  • What's up, folks! I'm back with another Girls Aloud reaction from their 2003 album Sound of the Underground, and this time we listen to the sonically fantastic and lyrically compelling (based on what I caught on this first listen) "No Good Advice." So join me as we listen to another top-shelf tune from the start of this album. Cheers!
Also I run a Patreon featuring extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do here on RUclips and getting early-access to video-watchalongs and reactions blocked on RUclips, as well as behind-the-scenes videos, video-reactions, and blooper-reels from my videos, can go here: / shnootz

This was a phenomenally good follow up to their debut. The spoken word ending is actually my favourite part of this song "No need to count those dirty sheep" and "frankly I don't even care", so sassy. Girls Aloud always injected a lot of personality into their music. They never took themselves too seriously and I'm a big fan of that style of artist.

So many well crafted songs on this album. Love the synth pad background in the chorus.

Originally written by Brian Higgins and Miranda cooper when they were signed as Moonbaby in the late 90's, and revived for given a makeover for Girls Aloud. It foes echo My Sharona and of course it's a teen rebellion song because of course when you're a teenager you think you know everything and all those old fuddy duddies just don't understand!!!! There is a version with some bad language "shut your mouth because your s**t might show" which was removed for the standard version. It's just a good pop song, with the right amount of attitude.

Girls Aloud were a real anomaly because they managed to position themselves as an act who ruled pop music in the UK charts throughout the 2000's while also being critically acclaimed for their unusual and slightly experimental take on pop music. Many of their songs don't follow the typical pop song structure, have lyrics that can at times be half-sensical or even humorous, and production that was unusual for mainstream pop. It just that made them a very unique force in pop music at the time. Not to take anything away from the group themselves, but a lot of their success was due to them being paired with the production house of Xenomania who wrote and produced pretty much their entire discography. Xenomania were fairly experimental in terms of pop music and Girls Aloud were the perfect vehicle for their material to reach the masses. They also worked a bit with Sugababes, who were another girl group in the UK at the time who had a similar reception to Girls Aloud even though their music was quite different.

Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou! One of my favourite songs ever. This is a hilarious career point cuz they had no money. The video had them prancing around in tinfoil, they hated it but the song was so uniquely their sound (XenoMania muses) that the country absolutely fell in love. This is so Britpop, think Republica or Shampoo, girl anthems with an accent. There’s a bit of Brick On the Wall PF there too

I always thought this song is what would happen if you mixed Gary Numan’s sound with a Girl Group.
Something Kinda Ooh is what would happen if you mix NIN with a Girl Group.

The debut album outside of the singles is awful and full of boring ballads. However the 3 singles are great. The second album is where they really solidified their sound and put them at the forefront of pop in the uk in the 2000s

Yeah agreed, as much as i love them, this isn't an album i come back to. The three Betty Boo written tracks don't even sound like anyone from GA is singing. This song is fantastic though, saw them live twice in Manchester recently and this was the one song where the entire audience was singing every word at the top of their voices 😀 great fun!
