Panning is a simple technique to learn but takes plenty of practice to master. Moving subjects such as cars and bikes makes excellent panning photos and in this video Gavin Hoey gives you some simple hints and tips to get you started.
A few drops of rain can completely transform your photos but as Gavin discovered it doesn't stop the cyclists of Amsterdam.
After the shoot follow Gavin into Photoshop where he has a couple of tips for dealing with distracting colours in the background of a photo.

    1) The picture you chose for postprocessing was very good because the framing was great.
    2) Also, it had a tram to the left and a crosswalk to the right. Two things a cyclist has to be aware of.
    3) If there is too much distracting color in the image I try b/w first.
    4) I get the best panning result when using the hip. Of the joints relevant for moving the camera the hip is the largest and the joint I (at least) have the best control over.
    5) If you don´t like the blue sign, go out again, shoot another post without a sign and paste it over the sign.
    6) If you don´t like the background, go out again, shoot a different background and photoshop the cyclist on it. If you shoot cyclist and background separately anyway, then you can use a higher shutter speed for the cyclist. The post-processing challenge is to maintain the verisimilitude.

What's best about the panning shot is you don't need a low aperture i.e expensive lens to do it. It's all about the timing of the shot. Dialing in that shutter speed to suit. You will take 100's of shot's to get a couple of bangers!

Hi Gavin, I've learned many things from your great tutorials, your presentations are clear, well paced and extremely informative. I love how you engage with your audience in such an enthusiastic and friendly way, so much so that I always view each episode right to the end, unlike some RUclips presenters that either waffle on or don't prepare their tutorials in any structured way :( Thank you for such great tutorials.......I'm now a definite subscriber to you and look forward to more comprehensive photo tips from you ;)

One thing you forgot to mention is that when shooting with this setting you cannot shoot in bright Sunny day without an ND filter because your shutter will be way too slow for and your ISO and aperture to keep up with your exposure.

Just wondering why f16? f8 iso 100 would have done the job better. My 24-105 is pretty sharp at f8 already getting softer at f16.
BTW: IS helps aswell, especially if you have a special panning mode.

I don't know about IS panning modes on DSLR's, but I also do not have any image stabilisation lenses, so that does not help either. I would opt for disabling IS without a panning mode available, because IS is ment to counteract camera movement and gets utterly confused when it senses a movement that it perceives as a continuous sideways shake which it will try to correct.
