Let's take a moment to appreciate how Katie is doing an amazing job each time. Her poses from outer space are just perfect, it's incredible how talented she is.
100% agree Julien. The choice of Katie as my model for this session wasn't a coincidence (obviously). I knew the look I wanted and I knew Katie would take my light and make it special!
My wife and I both noticed that. She was on it, and seemed to be enjoying the process! This video cost me a lot of money though, now I need a light projector.
Always love the "simple" techniques and set up...which yield incredible professional results. Your content, humor, creativity and professionalism is greatly appreciated!
Cool ideas and results, Gavin. And wow... Katie looks VERY strong... exuding the high-energy model/dancer vibe. Nice! Thank you, Gavin, Katie, and Sam!
That was Brilliant Gavin,,, It was the smoke pattern that made it Brilliant for me,,, the gobos reminded me of the Cokin sets we used to get Film Days,,, Best Wishes
There I was part way into this video thinking, "Gavin seems to be really liking these continuous lights, even more than his smoke machine ..." When, what appeared for the second half ...? Some stunning effects and images. Well done to everyone, and Katie's dance training really showing in the poses. All Best Wishes to Everyone for 2023
Wonderful tutorial on a technique I've been wanting to play with more and more. And holy cow, Katie can really strike a pose! She should give some lessons on posing!
I have a smoke machine and a gobo projector but never came to my.mind to use it from behind the model.... Wow. Hall of fame hero! Cant wait to try this.
I've been considering using my old 35mm slide projector to do things like this. You just may have pushed me to experiment. Thanks for yet another inspiring video.
Katie looked like she was dancing. Brilliant hahahaha. Great shots Gavin! Love it! That slide trick was awesome! Especially with the GOBO. Wait... if Sam was running the smoke, who was running the other camera???? WHOA! Mind blown ;) hahaha. Very cool and creative shots though. I really enjoyed them!
Hi Brad. Katie's modelling style comes from her artistic dancing background and blimey, she's good at it! I'll leave the mystery of who was running the gimble camera as just that, a mystery :)
Awesome once again, Gavin. That was cool! I'm going to try projection photography. I use a fog machine for video for effect. Loved your understated description, "slightly warm indeed."
Ohhh i can't wait to watch this later. I bought a cheap projector a while for something like this but haven't really gotten time/people to play with yet
Hmm.. Hi Gavin having Deja Vu over the old Oil projectors I used to have access to for DJ / Disco use.. for working on a budget check the local DJ/Guitar music shop some cheap lighting effects can be picked up for playing about with.. Great tutorial again .. Thanks each ... Dave B.
Amazing Gavin, thanks for the video, so informative and easy to understand. Question - would you mind providing dims of your studio room please? Looking into getting one built and figuring the size, would be very grateful!
Thanks for the great tutorial. 😊. I’m loving the effect of the light blaster coming from the back of Katie. I’m wondering if it would be possible to do this effect and also light the models face a bit without losing the effect at the back? Any ideas how to achieve this?
Hi Christophe. It was a tight fit but I sandwiched a slide (photo) and a home made gobo together in the mount. Watch again at 8:30 and you'll see me show both sides 😉
Hi Gavin, thanks for the continuous inspiration. I asked Adorama if they have gobos for this unit, and they only have the slides. So I guess the gobos you show in 8:30mare handmade? Best for 2023!
Another great tutorial, thanks to all involved. Does the Nanlite get hot? That may be an issue being so close to the ceiling for any length of time as shown around the 3 minute mark.
Gavin, Id like to make a suggestion to you and all the other Adorama contributors. Looking at photo post from people over the last year on social media I came up with an idea for a series. The Average Joe/Jill family photographer, (name it that you would like.) But it focuses on the events and holidays of the year. Has tips and tricks for how to take better Birthday, graduation, Homecoming, Prom, Easter, 4th of July, Christmas. (you get the idea) for the everyday family photo buff. But here is the twist. for each event/occasion show it taken with average gear, better gear and then enthusiast gear. Everybody does studio portrait videos. Just a thought. Keep up the good work. P.S. Im sending this to several of the Adorama contributors.
Hello Gavin.. Can the standard round metal gobos disks be used (hacked) into the Spekular? Will they physically fit (I would assume you may have to trim it or add tape to the edges to not allow light to slip by?
Since the light blaster was so inexpensive I figured I'd give it a try and it came today. Any tips on focusing the projection as my speedlight doesn't have a modeling light?
Not sure why no comments yet. I like the effects with the smoke. My daughter got a star and nebula projecter for her room for Christmas I thought that would look good taking pictures with that and some smoke. I might just try it and see. Was wondering when you have the light behind the beautiful model and smoke is there a way to light up the model a little bit more so we can see her without washing out the effects from behind. Hopefully you have a wonderful day.
Hi Travis. Anything is possible but the more lights you add (especially with smoke) the higher the risk of cross contamination. To achieve your idea I'd suggest trying a directional light source such as a snooted light or gridded light.
My main issue with the Light Blaster is that the film holder is designed specifically for slide film. You can print your own custom patterns on transparencies, but the slide holder restricts light to a 24mm x 36mm rectangle, and it's an awkward limit for a piece of lighting equipment. You need to do a bit of DIY if you want to take full advantage of the entire image circle of the lens (43mm across for normal lenses for full frame, even larger if it's a tilt/shift lens) or if you want more gradual light falloff via the lens' own vignetting.
Great video as always Gavin Hoey. Question! When using my Godox SK400II, to shoot lowkey photos, the metering system in Olympus Pen Epl1 changes the exposure. How do I stop it from doing that? I usually just leave it in "ESP" Thanks for your assistance!
Hi Marcus. If the camera is set to Manual mode then the metering system can safely be ignored (it's telling you the room exposure, not the flash) and will be most likely telling you it thinkis the scene is -3 or more stops underexposed. But if you're in any other mode or auto ISO on manual mode (not sure the EPL-1 had that) then the exposure will change with your framing and there's not much you can do other the use manual mode.
Great question Jeff. I'm using the 19 degree lens BUT I'd swap it right now for the 36 degree lens if I could. The 19 degree lens really needs more room then I have in my home studio (15'x15') so the wider results of the 36 degree lens would be my personal choice. Hindsight, such a wonderful thing 🙄
Could someone share something about behind the scenes for photography videos like these? I subscribe to several photography RUclips channels and they all are able to have models appear in their videos helping them. Are these usually just their friends, or do they hire models to help out with videos, or are they employees of the photo studios? I'm not sure a typical way to find models for general photography practicing as I'm still a beginner and it's just my hobby currently.
Gavin answers that in a somewhat recent live video (you can rewatch them). I believe he says he reaches out to people in the area mostly via instagram but in Katies case I think they met at something like a trade show. She also answers a question about how she chooses who she works with.
Hi Patty. There is indeed, it's called the Spekular Light Blaster... yes the same on I use in this video (link in the video description) has an optional Canon - Nikon adaptor
Why does these youtubers often talk about home studio, when they use 20,000 USD gear that can produce images from another dimension than normal 2,000 USD home gear?

One of the best instructors. Hardly wait for next video.
I love my light blaster, i even bought the adapter so you can use it on studio strobes. Plus i make simple slides for it..
Hey, Gavin. Nice pics, and interesting gear. I will look into it. And I wish you a new year full of success. Blessings, from Tijuana México.

A slide projector (or data projector) will work as long as you adjust your exposure. They're not as bright as a modern LED light or small flash!
Love this video. Lots of ideas to try in a future trip to the studio. Thanks.
Fantastic images Gavin!
Like your work Gavin always great

Bravo for this presentation. I just didn't understand how you put multiple colors at one blaster's gobo. Thank you.
Christophe, from France.
Assuming you mean the one from the flash version, he's using a color slide like from a slide projector along with the gobo.

Those things are cool! I'm sure they are super expensive, though.
Links to the kit are in the video description Omar and the prices might surprise you, especially for the Spekular Light Blaster!
Very interesting, could you do anything with a ‘ home’ projector?
Yes you can (and yes I have in the past) just need to work with the reduced amount of light and increaded amount of heat (slides burn)
Since the light blaster was so inexpensive I figured I'd give it a try and it came today. Any tips on focusing the projection as my speedlight doesn't have a modeling light?
Sorry for the late reply. Put your speedlight onto it's lowest power and pop away on the test button while turning the focus ring ;)

I used Gobo's from Nanalite in the Nanlite and from Spekular in the Speckular. Both available from Adorama. I also made my own as you can see at 8:30
