And he has unusually good dialogue for a Bethesda character with what I'd call the best philosophical idea of the game: "What is better? To be born good or to overcome your own evil nature through great effort?" His name in the dragon language translates as Overlord, Ambition, Cruelty. He used to be Alduin's right hand... right claw? but he switched sides and helped mortals leading to his defeat in the past. I recruit for the Blades immediately because, after your first foray with them, you get a potion that allows gives you 25% resistance from and damage to dragons. Hella useful. Then I ignore them.
    I choose the following every time:
    1. Erik the Slayer. He wants to be a mercenary and hero and seems like he'd be thrilled to be a Blade. Plus, because of the real world man on whom it was based.
    2. Uthgerd the Unbroken because, after being cast out from the Companions she can find redemption and honor being a Blade.

    In my own list of recruiting blades. I always pick the mage followers. Because i rather want them to focus on range attacks and healing.
    -Onmund. As a mage he is average, but has heavy armor stats that suits him with the blade armor better, then he can heal himself if taken large damage.
    Marcurio. Loved his personality, has a strong magic damage and so I can pick him from the blades for free when i needed him.
    -Illia. Since shes a follower that disappeares from the game after her quest. Instead of turning her into a steward on a house, i made her a blade member that also focuses on range magic and healing.

    • @artisticbang9111
      @artisticbang9111 3 месяца назад +1

      Reason why I avoid melee followers, is because mostly they stare at the sky when the dragon is still flying, they do use bow and arrow sometimes, but the accuracy is bad than casting spells. Sometimes melee blades get hit by large scale spells by they're fellow members causing them to kill each other when the dragon is dead and finally, melee followers mostly can't heal themselves back in the bleed out state. This problem turned themselves a burden on both the early phase of the battle and later phases.

    • @okalosomylos780
      @okalosomylos780 3 месяца назад +1

      A mix of Mage and Warrior Blades can certainly lead to friendly fire from Destruction spells while the dragon is on the ground.
      Also, both Marcurio and Onmund can cast the Chain Lightning spell (while they have enough Magicka) - can't this damage your allies (Blades, Followers, creatures, summons etc) as well as the player?
      As mentioned in the video, Illia is strictly a Frost Mage, so Frost Dragons have a 50% resistance to her Destruction spells. She must be at least given e.g. a Staff of Incineration for those instances, until it runs out of charges and you must recharge it yourself. And she has no perks.
      Mage Blades recruits are a bit more high maintenance, because they perform optimally when provided with as many Magicka (Regeneration) Potions and Elsweyr Fondues as you can spare and maybe a Staff or two.
      Melee Followers / Blades can consume Health Potions to heal themselves in combat, just not the ones brewed by the Player on an Alchemy Lab (maybe, not 100% sure).
      Besides these, having 3 Mage Blades seems like a really fun roster

    Nice idea and nice picks. Other good choiches in terms of roleplay (but not all by skills) could be:
    - Borgakh Steel Hart, at Mor Khazurg: she want to live adventures, and not stay in the fortress as a wife devoted only to the chief, without other higher purposes. Why not help her?
    - Ghorbash Iron Hand; Dushnikh Yal: he was in the Legion before returning to the clan, but he says us that he miss the adventure and a role outside, so we can give him one!
    - Mijoll; Riften: She wants to make Riften a city without corruption, but not only it's hard to achieve that anyway, there are even some scenarios (based on the player choiches) where the corruption and/or crime become even stronger and nearly unavoidable in Riften. If the player complete even partially the Thief Guild questline, they become stronger in Riften, and if Maven become Jarl, by "Season unending" choiches or by Civil war, the corruption would be the soul of the city administration. In those cases, Mijoll in Riften is going to fight an unwinnable war, and maybe suffer. We can give her a new purpose in life (Delphine is not an angel, but still better than Maven).
    - Erik the Slayer, Rorikstead: he become a mercenary, but not because he want to live doing that specific profession, but because he want to live a life full of adventures. And with the Blades he can live many of those.
    - Ralis Sedarys; outside Raven Rock. At the end of the quest Unearthed, if we choose to spare him, he will fell confused, guilty and shamed for the fate of mercenaries and miners that died at the barrow while he was ander Azhidal's spell, plus after that he is going to stay at the Retching Netch without nothing to do until we recruit him. We can give him a life far away to Raven Rock and the barrow that shocked him, where he can start from zero, and maybe redeem himself.
    Plus i will say that any housecarl could works. They are assigned us after completing quests, but in many playthrough my character is going to live in one propoerties, or at most in 3-4 of them, but most of the time i will not play someone that is going to be a stable citizen in all the holds. The housecarls in the holds where i don't spend spare time and i don't have a property are going to stay on a chair at the entrance of the relative palace, waiting for me, a phantom thane without affairs in those holds, all the time. I prefer to put those skills on other purposes rather than waste them. The Blades are a good choices.

    The video doesn't elaborate but _Rebuilding the Blades_ should be started by talking to Delphine immediately after _Alduin's Wall_ is completed and before reading the Elder Scroll during _Alduin's Bane_ .
    After recruiting the 3 Followers, speak to Esbern to get the _Dragon Hunting_ radiant quest, one of those repeatable ones that send you to the same 10 (11 with Saering's Watch) Dragon Lairs, this time with the 3 Blades recruits along for the fight.
    Kill the Dragon at the lair, speak to Esbern again to start the 3rd quest in this mini questline: _Dragon Research_ . Give him one Dragon Bone and one Dragon Scale and he gives you Esbern's Potion, drink it to get the ultimate reward in this questline, the *Dragon Infusion* permanent perk.
    After that you can visit Esbern from time to time to get the _Dragon Hunting_ quest multiple times, if you want the extra help from the 3 Blades. This can only happen before the _(Kill) Paarthurnax_ quest, when they stop interacting with you, but you can just ignore them.
    The only thing you'll be missing after that is Esbern's *Dragonslayer's Blessing* , which seems vastly inferior to Paarthurnax's equivalent *Meditation on the Words of Power*

Besides, there's also a practical element to having her join the blades if you'd like to get up to some other shenanigans in Riften, if you know what I mean. My case for Erik is basically the same as yours. Give the man a purpose in life. His whole (mini) quest arc is about his father letting him go out into the wild world. I know he says something like he'll become a sword for hire, but let's face it, the only experience he's going to get is the one we offer him. + Erik has a really cool (real life) backstory.

      Yeah I hate that. The patch changes every follower to use what they're default equipped with and not the other way around. It's very frustrating.

    I always found it odd that dragon slayers use katanas instead of something like picks, spears, and large cleavers/ axes. You know something to bypass or move between strong scales that are almost on par with the best metals on the planet?

    One note for mod users to consider, is that The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, which many mod users have installed, does change the classes of several followers to match their starting equipment. This means that Cosnach is now proficient in light, rather than heavy armor, and Uthgerd proficient in two-handed, rather than one-handed weapons, which does make them poorer candidates to join the Blades after installing this patch. On the upside, Erik the Slayer is now proficient in heavy armor, making him a very capable candidate.

    My character was a Breton from a noble family, but not full-blooded. He was a accident born from an intimate fling his father had with an imperial consort of minor Nobel lineage, he spent his days essentially being lambasted for his imperial origins. When he finally was able to visit his imperial family, around the age of young adolescence, they accepted him with open arms. They taught him about the family's history, their lineage and culture, and when the boy expressed that he wanted to learn the sword and shield, to be an unbreakable wall like they were, they taught him. This turned him into a incredibly staunch Patriot, and fueled by the inner insecurity of falling back into ostracization by failing his newfound family irks him on to further escalate that. He doesn't become a radical or anything, but he saw the dragonborn Powers as an acknowledgment of his place in the empire, and when given the ability to join/lead the blades, he will do what's necessary to do that. 😅

    Worth noting that the Unofficial Patch fixes a lot of NPCs' skills and perks to better fit their default equipment. Such as changing Uthgerd to a two-handed warrior, and Cosnach to light armor. And probably all the other mismatched entries on this list.

    Yes! I have made Benor, Uthgerd, and Golldir blades. Ghorbash also is an interesting choice IMO as he doesn’t have an actual place at his stronghold, although nis class is not benefited by the blades gear. I included Vorstag as well on a playthrough just because of his skills and because he was all bored at the Silver Blood Inn.

  • @DragonxFlutter

    Apparently, this list is different if using the Unofficial Skyrim Patch version 2.0.9. Quote UESP:
    “If using the Unofficial Skyrim Patch 2.0.9. or higher, followers who are skilled with this equipment (Heavy Armor, One Handed) are: Erik the Slayer, Kharjo, Adelaisa Vendicci, Golldir, Ria, Torvar, Borgakh the Steel Heart, Ghorbash the Iron Hand, and Celann.”
    I have no idea if this is accurate, but that’s what I read. No idea if these characters are actually bugged in vanilla or if this is just a weird balance change made by USP.

  • @Bat-Twenty-Two
    @Bat-Twenty-Two 13 дней назад

    Uthgerd and Golldir are mandatory for me. They both need an honorable purpose after their previous shortcomings. But I'm hesitant to pick Borgakh or Erik because they seem to favor the freedom of adventure over being duty-bounnd to the Blades.
    Speaking of duty and purpose, it does make Aranea a strong candidate once her role for Azura has concluded.

    I always have 2 people for sure, the companion dropout lady from the Whiterun tavern, for strong melee, the mage mercenary for hire at the Riften tavern for a strong magic offensive, and then the third recruit is always whoever else I feel like in that playthrough. I don't like to take someone from another faction out of their faction, I choose followers that are kind of unaffiliated followers.

  • @TheTrueBigWill

    I believe in all playthroughs that I have helped the Blades I have chosen Mjoll, for two reasons:
    1. She’s essential and a great warrior so roleplay wise she is so perfect for it, she can rid Riften of Dragons and maybe even take down the Black-Briars with the help of the other Blades.
    2. This means that technically the Blades get a fourth member, Aerin. So you can either see this in two ways, one is that he can become Esbern’s apprentice and can learn the history of the Blades (because he remains in his clothes, but still follows Mjoll) OR it’s an easy way to assure that he will meet an unfortunate end at the hands of the dragon. Though actually I remember on one playthrough I pickpocketed Aerin’s clothes off of him, and it ended in him in nothing but underwear coming toe to toe with a Frost Dragon, and got the kill animation on it! But he did also get killed by an ice wolf in another save file…

    I think in addition to these guys in the vid, these followers would also fit well.
    Erik The Slayer - he has always wanted to be an adventurer and has you to thank.
    Ahtar - Imperial Headsman, blades used to serve the Empire.
    Mjoll The Lioness - she already pledges to protect Riften, I suppose next step is to keep it safe from dragons, which helps everywhere, and she trusts you.
    Anekkie Crag-Jumprr hates her life and wants to be a warrior.
    Derkeethis - He isn't really a part of his community, and he owes you.

    I usually recruit Aranea, the Priestess of Azura, after the Azura's Star/Black Star quest for Blades.

    Since I never slay Paarthurnax, I view Rebuilding the Blades quest as the Dragonborn sending people there for training or gaining lives' purpose, but not actually go dragon hunting.
    So I too, pick Uthgerd the Unbroken.
    As for the other, the first is Erik the Slayer, mostly because I think he need some proper training, and since he won't the life of adventurer, it would be cruel to make him a steward (if I really want to play a cruel Dragonborn, then I will use him for Boethiah quest instead).
    As for the third, I used to pick Aranea Ienith since I were dumb enough to restore Azura Star, but nowaday it's Illia.

    The best recruits for the blades are the ones that need a place to redeem themselves and are powerhouses to slay dragons IMO.
    Ralis Sedarys, a Two handed spellfighter that can summon dremora lords.
    if you leave him the rings of Azhidal he can use ranged fire and ice spells, if you make him a blade he will change his standard leather gear for Blades heavy armor and permantly be able to dual wield his pickaxe with a katana, the two fastest one handed weapons in the game.
    Erandur for long range fire magic and close range dual wielding the blades katana and his own mace.
    Ilia
    Like Ralis and Erander she has nowhere to go and specialises in lightning based magic which is useful on dragons

  • @tipoftheiceberg7034
    @tipoftheiceberg7034 3 месяца назад

    I went Illia, Guy from the tomb. Those two need to have a new purpose in their relatively young lives, one has experience ith witches and such magic could be useful alchemist. The boy is young and needs purpose otherwise would be quite depressed. Lastly for lore perspective I go Erandur. He's got a lot of experience with daedra which isn't entirely relevant but still useful. He's versed in destruction magic but after devotion to Mara for the last couple decades as he says, he would be a useful healer. He would also outlive Esbern and Delphine and likely become the new recruiter. A Blades Grand Master in Skyrim who is a Dark elf who was a devote agent of Mara is so good for many reasons

    Marcurio
    Stenvar
    Vorstag
    3 mercenary follows, higher max stats than almost all those in this list, making them a blade makes them free to hire. Vorstag is an amazing 1 handed warrior, stenvar 2 handed, marcurio is already a top 5 follower for his dps alone now he gets free armour and is rehirable for free
