The Radioddity GA-510 is a good radio, but I ordered and just received a Chinese cousin of the Chinese-American *Baofeng BF-H7* radio. It, too, is a 10-watt radio, but I prefer the BF-H7 because it had a channel knob that the 510 doesn't. I also like the color selections (black, blue and orange) of the H7. It sells for about $46 through Amazon, but you have to wait for a boat from China, a very slow boat. Mine arrived in a bubblewrap package Houdini would have had a tough time with, but once it was open and charged, it rapidly became my favorite GMRS radio. The only downsides are, the belt clip attaches to the battery, not the radio. The H7 also is a tri-power job and it's a bit nicer than the 510. The output is 10 watts, actually 10 watts, and I wonder if the 510 is as well. Many times what is printed on the back falls short of the claims. Still, you might try one of each and post your own views here.
Thanks for that info John
Outstanding review! I have been looking for new radios for the kids and this looks like it fits the bill!
Thanks man, glad you liked the video. The second battery is a nice option for sure 👍
Nicely done review! You were lucky: I got one of these from Amazon, and HIGH output was only 6.0 watts. A discouraging sign if it's this bad right out of the box. Needless to say I sent mine back. Hopefully most people will get one that has full output, but I won't take another chance on this brand.
I liked this radio but don’t have it anymore, sorry to hear your had problems
Thanks for the review. Gotta disagree about the antenna connector: one of my "big three" radios had female SMA on the radio side which was merely press-fit into the chassis. Eventually, the whole connector came out. No fix that I could find. The SMA male scheme on these is mechanically solid, and careful handling when changing antennas makes broken pins unlikely. 73!
Glad you liked the video and thanks for the comment. I see your point about the antenna connector and guess it boils down to preference and experiences 👍
Thanks just got one of these today, It looks like it's finally supported by Chirp btw.
Nice, thanks for the update 👍
I really enjoyed your thorough review of this radio.
Thanks man, appreciate the comment 👍
Just got mine today. I have to say it's not bad! You have to keep in mind the price point. It's a basic radio with no frills, exactly what I wanted. The stuff you get for that price is unbeatable. The software looks a bit wonky. but I think I can get through it. I did notice there are like 21 channels already programmed in memory? All 452, 453 etc. That was odd but I'll look at that tomorrow. I'm sure they test the radio and that's just leftovers. I programmed our local repeater without really reading much of the manual. It's very Baofeng-esque in the menu system. I like it! Thanks to your review I would recommend this to anyone just looking for a basic HT. I like the feel...has a nice heft. Okay I'll quit babbling. Keep up the great work Sir! 73
Glad to hear you like it, I totally agree with your assessment of the software. Hopefully chirp supports this radio at some point. Take care 👍
@@TheSmokinApe What I'll do with it is just program in 1 repeater and get it to work. Using the memories already programmed in as a guide. Once that works it will be good to go. Chirp will catch up with it I'm sure. :)
That’s pretty much what I did, the software isn’t impossible... it’s just a little cumbersome.
@@TheSmokinApe Not a fail. It's Chinese "quirky". Once you get the quirk you can roll with it. Radio is a science... but it ain't rocket science. LOL Have a great weekend!
You too!
I like it-but I can't get an answer to my question about-do you have to take a written test for the 10watt ga-510 walkie-talkie, or do you just pay a fee then renew it IN TEN YEARS!PLEASE LET ME KNOW!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
In the US you need to be a licensed amateur radio operator to use this radio which means passing a test, anyone saying otherwise is misinformed or misleading you.
i love how much more solid it feels over the F8-HP
It is beefy!
Great review SMA!
Apologies if this was obvious, but is it worth stretching my budget I get one of these rather than Baofeung?
I’m hunting hard to find the best bang for my buck in budget ham handhelds.
Thanks, and keep up the great work
Well, it does have an extra battery and more power but it’s really not much different than a UV-5R.
HEY THERE , HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU SMOCKINAPE.. I KINDA LIKE THE LOOKS OF THAT RADIO..BUT IT CAME PREPROGRAMED IN BUSNIESS BAND FREQ,S......... BUT I LIKE IT..IS IT FEILD PROGRAMIBLE??..... THIS IS N3NDX..
It is programmable from the keypad.
Seems pretty good. Great review! 73
Thanks, glad you liked it 👍
Yaaay I've been waiting for this review .
Hope it was helpful 👍
I ordered two of these from Radioddity's Amazon store. One was DOA out of the box, the LED screen blank in all modes in spite of audio status alerts and the "on" beep working ok. I got a refund with no obligation to return the faulty unit. Upside is I now have two spare batteries, a charger and an extra antenna. I have ordered a replacement so we will see if I get another dud. I've ordered two of the IP54 rated external mics to go with the one ok unit I have in hand and for the replacement I just ordered. If they actually work as advertised for the price point they seem good value. Hopefully the dud was an outlier. Fortunately over 20 years an Amazon customer I get really good service if I have any issues with an order.
I don't have this radio any longer but remember liking it quite a bit, thanks for watching Brad!
That they would put a port on the battery to charge it If it's unlocked for all frequencies That would be a number one seller right there I believe that a real good radio I Own one but it's the BFH6 .
Yeah, this is a rebranded BFH6. Thanks for checking out the video Ralph 👍
A lot of radio for the money. As for chirp, my Ailunce HD-1 nor my Anytone D878UV are supported yet either.
Hey Philip! I wouldn’t expect to see those radios supported by Chirp even though I’d love for it to happen. Thanks for the comment 👍
HI all, charlie KG7NTV here. to start with i don't know where to go to a general forum so i chose to use this one. i purchased the GA-510 radio. in the process in programming the radio i came across some new features. i will start with the FHSS setting. i contacted costumer service about this. IT stands for frequency hopping spread spectrum. the person helping me did not know what is setting is and why it is in the menu choices. maybe one of you or JASON might know what it is. i asked about the signal setting. lt has to do with the signal of the DTMF signal strength. i don't use DTMF so it is no big deal. and last i asked about changing the power up on screen message to show my name and call sign. it turns out that the software for the GA-510 does not allow this function. this is strange because all earlier BAOFENG radios can. I have not used the radio much yet but i am happy with having a little more power to use in my mountainous and rural area. HOPE this info helps you GA_510 users. charlie
I’m not sure what FHSS is, sorry about that one. You might be able to change the boot screen but the software isn’t capable, when Chirp does come out for this radio I expect it will have more features. 👍
Great review! Really helpful!
Thanks Clyde!
Been waiting to see a review of this.
Hope it was helpful 👍
@@TheSmokinApe Very much so. I like that it comes with 2 battery packs. It's the same shell as the GD77 I believe, so perhaps the batteries are interchangeable.
I don’t have the gd77 but the are similar enough 👍
@@TheSmokinApe I have the GD77. I'm not into DMR yet, but I got it mainly for all the analog memories. It's one hell of a super scanner and I have my 2m and 70cm repeaters in my local area plugged in, plus on LISTEN ONLY for public safety, MURS, GMRS and some of the police and fire that are still on analog.
I've been eyeing this radio for a while, and yours is the first review of it I saw. I trust your reviews very much. Straight to the point, power test.. good stuff.
Thanks glad you like the reviews!
The one thing I found, that I do not like is the inability to have the channel name displayed on the screen. You can add a channel name in their programing software, (CPS) but when the code plug is flashed to the radio, No name displayed. If you load up the radio to it's max, you better have a good memory for the channel, (name) location.
Hey Ron, I agree that better tagging would be awesome. Thanks for watching...
I mean , for $ 65.00 you get a solid little radio to knock around with all day , roll around in the vehicle or the boat. And it comes with two batteries a programming cable, and it puts out a respectable 9.75 watts. Yes , God has blessed America ! It's like HAM heaven over here. I'm going to buy one to throw in my Get Home Bag in my work van. Sure as heck am not going to take my $400. Yaesu on the boat .
Great review. I'm considering the 510 but I think the GS-5B might be a better choice. I'm in the process of selling some of my 10 year old Yaesu HT and upgrading to newer equipment.
People tend to really like the 510 and the GS-5B, probably can't make a bad choice between the two.
@@TheSmokinApe The one feature of the 5B that I really want is the USB charging. With all the portable solar powered battery packs popping up it would be very handy to use on of them t charge the 5B,
@@TheSmokinApe I've got the 5B and it's great. The only issue the dosplay is hard to see n bright sunlight
Hey,. I just ordered 2 of these BECAUSE of the two batteries!
👍 report back on how you like them if you don’t mind.
Great video, it would be much helpful on how to program a repeater on memory, Thank you JFG
It programs just like the Baofeng. ruclips.net/video/WPyYh3nlpUg/видео.html
Thank you...
Thank you
You're welcome!
Good radio - I have the Baofeng original (BF-H6) .
Good radio although I think they messed up on the speaker and the backlight settings compared to normal baofengs.
Speaker is tinny.... backlight doesn't go off on long QSOs!?
Cheers and beers 73
Thanks for checking out the video Jay! I haven't messed with the BF-H6
Anyone else noticing an issue with the display while scanning? I programmed it with the keypad, not sure if that makes a difference or not. Channel number scrolls but frequency on display does not change. When it stops, it shows the monitored channel number but not the monitored frequency.
WTH?
Mine won’t scan in Memory Mode, maybe I’m doing something wrong. It scans fine in VFO...
Great review and thorough as always. I agree that the male SMA is a potential major fail point. Thanks! 73 de K2CJB
Thanks K2CJB, glad you liked the video 👍
Just had one delivered today via Amazon, right out of the box, the upper left corner of the LCD Screen has a CRACK in it!! Apparently Radioddity HAS NOT VISUAL Quality Control at the China Factory! Sending it back to Amazon. ...... if you order one in the next month, you might get this "blemished" one since Amazonie has a shitty habit of putting returns right back into stock!
Ugh, that sucks. Hopefully you get a good one...
How do I get and what steps do I take the Radioditty GA-510 to scan the memory channels.
this has come up before, I don't remember if this radio can scan or not.
Pretty good deal to get a free radio for a review with only 3,800 views in a year. They could got that many views by sticking a sticker on the back seat of a New York cab. Just bough this radio though due to Chirp finally picking up support.
Great review. Do you see a reason for getting this instead of the TYT UV8000D, which has about the same (tested) max output, has cross band repeater capability and is a little bit cheaper?
I haven’t tried it but that TYT looks pretty interesting 🤔
Retevis rt23 also is a cross band repeater handheld radio
Thanks for the info 👍
I have the TYT MDUV380 GPS. The programming software might as well have been written in Hebrew if you are coming from Baofeng programming.
Yeah, some of that stuff leaves you scratching your head.
@@TheSmokinApe I am on a fixed income. Money matters to me. My radio cost 120 but if time were money I would have spent thousands doing research into programming it.
Yeah, that is the part that sucks... figuring out how to use some of this stuff.
@@TheSmokinApe I have a lot of free time just didn't didn't know how much less time it would take to program a 500 dollar radio than 120 dollar Chinese radio.
@@TheSmokinApe I have a lot of free time. SSDI. Fixed income 120 was a lot of money to me but I figured it out.
It is indeed supported by CHIRP.
I don’t think it was when I made the video, can’t remember at this point.
Hi what would you recommend this radio or a UV 82? does the 10 watts really make a difference
I can make a difference especially when you use different antennas. I’d just say get the radio you like better...
I couldn't use CHIRP on mine, had to get Radioddity software to program. Did I miss something? Thanks.
Yeah, the radio isn’t support by Chirp yet, have to use the proprietary software.
If you don't have a license, is it fine to just to listen on the frequencies?
Yes, it is OK to listen 👍
QST Review stated if Memory Channels were Manually Programed, it would not Scan until The Software was Downloaded and Scan Add was selected. Is this True?
I not longer have this radio but I believe it is true
Does this Radio Transmit outside the Ham Bands or is the Transmit locked within the Amateur Frequencies Only? Thanks.
How do you change the power on text?
Sorry Richard, I passed this radio on long ago. You probably can do it with Chirp 👍
Just get to how the radio works. Anyone can figure out how to get a product out of a box.
Glad you liked the video!
Is this the same radio as the Bao Feng DM-1801
No, it’s not DMR capable.
@@TheSmokinApe I guess they used the same case then.
Same case different innards 👍
how do you change language from chineese to englis
I believe its menu option 14
@@TheSmokinApe Thanks for replying. Was wondering if you could just make a video of how to change the language on a radioddity 510? Or send me step by step instructions. I went to menu 14 but I'm lost after that. I know the Chinese symbol now for change language, but I don't know how to finalize it. I want to hear my radio and all the bad things happening out there in the world. Just joking thanks a lot! I'll keep watching. Happy 4th

A rebranded Baofeng BF-H6 with some extra accessories. No thanks.
I have this radio and the only complaint I have is the orange buttons. ....I wish the buttons were black. ....
Black would cool 👍
When is someone going to do a video on how to change your radioddity 510 language.? Have had this radio at least 4 months still have never used it. This instruction correction is not even listed in the manual. Also talking to customer service about the radio they cannot help. Just a big one maybe you should attack it. I hope someone does. I can only sell this radio to a Chinese person! Let's get with it!
Ugh, I don't have the radio anymore. Let me see if I can find someone who does...
Gary, I have one. On mine, you have to do the following to change language:
1: turn radio on
2: hit the menu button
3: right away after hitting menu button type: 37
4: then immediately hit the menu button again
5: then immediately hit the up or the down arrow button
6: after you scroll to English with the up or down button hit the menu button again when it lands on English
That should do it. Let me know if it doesn’t work or if you need clarification
This video does not teach you how to program this radio.
So the demo of the software at 7:50 wasn’t enough?
