I´ve been using mains: 31lbs (poly, 1.3mm) and crosses 35 lbs (nylon 1.3mm). Now I´m playing the best tennis of my life, no wrist or elbow pain. I use a ProKennex Classic 5g at 355 grams, 100sqi.
I have been using Babolat Pro Hurricane for years and used to string it all at 60/62 . last year by watching this video i tried stringing 33/35 for numbers of times , Results are Crazy: Greater Feel + At least more 20% spin + 15/20% power increasement. Feels very different in the first 10 minute or so but after that you would never wanna go back to 50 or 60 lbs at all.
115 sq in rqt. 16 x 15! 29 inch long (DIY) stiff poly main, softer cross. 28lbs. I have gone as low as 20. Great spin & power. 3 yr experiment. Label up for topspin, label down for serve, slice.
With shoulder problems I decided to go on my VOLKL V SENSE V1 PRO down to 38 pounds, on a TECNIFIBRE multi feel black I was at 45 , it feels great, comfortable, crisp and control is good , my arm thank me ! And since they lose a pound or two after stringing I guess it’s 36 now, nice pocketing of the ball and topspin 🎾
Went 30lbs on the new ultra tour 18/20 with Lux rough. Noticed you can play whippy as hell and they all go in. If your game is spin already and you're using semi to full western, this is for you! A flat hitter will probably send a few too many flying. I'm sold on the feel and know why on tour the low stringing craze seems to take over more and more players. Fed low 40s, Sock 36lbs, Kukushkin had on done at 20/19 that is lbs not kilos!
I just dropped down from 54 to 46 pounds, Cream 17g Pure Aero Tour, and I honestly played the best tennis of my life, better control, better spin, better feel, and serves were faster. Also extremely comfortable on the arm
Yes you Can Hit really Well with it, When The Ball is coming right at you with low speed but I find that in a match situation When Someone hits hard I can’t control the power of the low tension
Thanks for the insight.. I have gone as low as 25 pounds and its very pleasurable experience.. Great slice.. Lots of power and not much loss of control. The sound is muted.. but unlikely to go back much higher.
Have you tried a 5 pound lower tension cross string so the mains snap back for more spin serves n top spin and better slices? I did 50/ 45 then 45/40 and it was great at 45/40 but i need to prestretch it next time... this was on rpm blast
The mains are longer so need more tension ...2 to 5 pounds more ..have you tried 45 / 40 pounds or 40 / 35 pounds ?? Hybrid tensions to see if you get more spin ? I read that if the crosses are 5pounds less the mains snap back more easily for spin
What would lower the impact on a arthritic had that at impact on the volley does hurt so the hand releases automatically or even drops out of hand. I am thinking a big racket multi , or polyester string at a low tension? I usually go two # over middle. what would you suggest. Other than giving up the game. Thanks, Ellen
I tried MSV Focus hex at 28/29 on a Wilson six-one tour 95, sucks in the first hour, left it aside, and picked up again one month later, it became a spin monster - for one hour heavy hitting I wasn't able to hit more than 2 balls out
Peter MacLauren a slice serve is different from a backhand slice. A slice serve is like a curve ball in baseball. A slice serve can also hit the back fence if hit with stronger pace.
Peter MacLauren if you look at 1:20 the contact is more like a flat or slice (side spin) serve. No way a back spin. Do you play tennis? How does one serve with back spin unless serving under handed, which in 1:20 the sever was not doing?
Physics study in Australia by Rob Bower and Rod Cross. tensions 41 lbs, 51 lbs and 62 lbs were tested. Men and women hitting forehands. Here are the main results: 62 lbs had lowest velocity (Least power) and highest net errors. 70% shots in. 41 lbs had the most errors both long and wide errors but had the least net errors. 63% shots in. 51 lbs had least amount of errors. 80% of shots were in. No difference in velocity between 41 and 51 lbs.
Interesting. I'll try to look this up. I wonder what string types were tested? It would be interesting to test this on the same group of players using Syn gut, Kevlar, Poly, etc. to see if there is a difference between string materials.
Thanks for making this video. Do you have to change your the way you hit after lowering the string tension in order to keep the control? Is lower string tension suitable for female players?
This works great for female players as well. Just keep in mind poly string lowers the overall power of the stringbed which makes it difficult for some female players to generate power and heavy top spin. I did not have to change my swing drastically during this experiment. I did try to use a full semi western grip when in the past I have used a grip between eastern/semiwestern. Helped to get the ball to drop a bit more drastically.
Quick question please, can I add tension head to a Gamma X 6 FC Pro (drop weight) ? if yes which ones do you recommend ? which one do you have in the background ? Thanks a lot
I used the Gamma X Stringer when I first started stringing amzn.to/382GqLO It's a great starter machine where you simply tighten the weight along the tensioning rod to where you want the tension. You can do low or high tension. It's not exact but a great intro machine for sure.
I also wanted to try this but with out my own stringing machine it s not as easy. I have ben looking lately at getting one. I see you have the Gamma X-ELS. How do you like it?
It has been a solid stringing machine for me for the past 2 years. Gamma also has great customer service when needed. The 6 point mounts and electronic calibration make it a great machine for quick and accurate stringing.
Good question. I try not to more than 5 lbs difference between the mains and crosses. I plan to make a video on that in the future. always concerned it may affect the racket frame if the mains or crosses are too different in tension. Thanks for the video idea!
Great video!!! What gauges did you use on your experiment? I’ve gone to 43lbs with Gosen Poly Pro 1.29mm. Really comfortable but way too powerful. I will try more tensions, thanks for your video Drew!
Thank you. I used a Wilson Revolve 1.25 mm for all of the low tension experiments. I expected it to be too powerful for me to keep the ball in the court but it actually handled well. Good luck with your tension tests with the Gosen Poly. I've actually never used that string but have heard it is a durable/reliable poly.
Frisco Tennis Shop thanks man! Those are all good words. Hope entering the 30s the control changes. Yes, Poly Pro feels soft. I will keep you posted on my tension test. Cheers man
Honestly, I think it would be difficult to control. I went really low tension but used all poly strings. Technifibre X One may be too loose to control at 35 lbs
I wouldnt worry about it. String it at a higher tension. Or 35 lbs may not be that bad for that string. But thats a great string so I think you are alright.
Very interesting video. I have one question: Are the strings shifting very much with this low tension? I don't know the exact explanation in English because I'm from Germany. Best regards
@@friscotennisstringing Thank you very much for your answer.I'm using the GrapplesnakeCube at the moment. I'll give it a try with the low tension. I'll let you know how it works for me. Best regards from Germany.
@@friscotennisstringing Hi, went down to 40lbs. No loss of control. Much better feel and spin. Next time I'll try 35 - good decision to reduce the tension - no more arm problems.

If you go low, how many hours would they last? I understand that poly go bad quickly. Can you still play fine after they lose tension?
Thanks!
What about players that hit a fairly flat ball. Is it harder to keep the ball in at lower tensions due to the trampoline affect?

I would like to know if you think I can string the new Tecnifibre Triax at 30 lbs?
Why doesn’t the ball on your serve hit the back fence after it bounces? 1:20
Fluky Review
I was thinking the same!! Lol
Either dead balls, or the ball just scids with that type of power..
He's hitting with slice so it stays very low

I'm too afraid to do this with expensive poly's like luxilon alu power. Have you tried experimenting with Luxilon strings at low tension?

Trying 45 lbs on my next stringing. Hyper g 17 guage.
No disadvantages when you string it on 30 lbs? For example, the playability duration becomes shorter, or durability issue?
I found it had better tension maintenance and durability. You may see a disadvantage in control if the slide and snap of the poly is decreased.
Ever experiment on Hybrid poly low tension mains (30 lbs) and higher tension natural gut cross (50 lbs) or vice versa?
