- SAVE space, Clear your WORKBENCH and FLOOR, Tidy quicker and easier. As a WOODWORKER, I love my FRENCH CLEAT tool wall. You can make these holders out of SCRAPWOOD or make them more attractive. One looks like a toilet but is the most useful addition to my FRENCH CLEAT system.
Every holder is super easy to make and uses nothing but PLYWOOD offcuts.

I love my French cleats. The only problem I've got is that I've run out of wall space. I've found that magnetic strips are excellent for holding screwdrivers, pliers and even hammers.

I had fun with this set of holders. the bin is actually really useful and great to be able to move it away., Only good in a small space I guess. Thank you as always for watching.
What i did in my workshop; i made a wall for some flat tools like saws, to hang on and then made another wall that hangs on two cleats, top and bottom, that i can slide from side to side. That way i have two walls of tools in the same space as one!
That is nothing short of genius. And would allow me to buy even more tools. I love it.

Hello, me again. If you arrange your hammers horizontally, you would not have to move up to three hammers to get the one you want- and it would not be much wider. Indeed, if you stagger the height so the heads do not clash, they pack tighter.

Haven't used French cleats but after seeing this I may have to give them a go... just got to figure out where to mount them!
Hi Jim. My first instinct is to reply, everywhere. But in truth it is only practical if you have the right wall space to put them on. My first video on this shows the initial process but in truth it is super simple. Thank you for watching and for commenting.
@@startmaking1 With a little clean up and rearranging I've got the space. The wall portion can be attached to the studs, then I can hang ever how many boxes, hangers or whatever I need to those. It will make for a good project this winter! Glad I found your channel, really enjoying the videos and getting some great ideas.

For the spring clip clamps, does storing them clamped to wood wear out the springs faster? I know they are cheap but having enough working clamps on hand can be a lifesaver.
Mine have not. I think that even when they are completely closed they are still under tension so adding in a piece as thin as 5 mm ply is probably ok. But you do raise a good point.

May i ask, how big is your shop? . I decided to get into wood working as it has been a childhood dream of mine to work with wood. My shop is small and I mean SMALL, I am a new wood worker and am finally in a house where I can have my own little space.

@@startmaking1 yea that's not great to be fair a need a bigger shed/workshop never mind trying clear space although that's a work in progress. Getting wetter and darker outside so working outside at nights is getting more and more difficult. Keen to see what your working on. Got another table about ready go nice dark elm this time. 🏴👍

Just from Plywood but to make it fun I am trying to put some secret spaces in . Though I have just had to order 20 boards of shiplap to replace the entire wall of the shed. The rain is just flowing in. Real pain. There is a part of me that is tempted to build a workshop in my garden but the one issue is that I don't know how to build a workshop. Would make a great video series though. Or a really expensive nightmare.

This one has been about 6 months in the works looking nice though. to be honest see if you go look at Keith from ragnbone he has a 2 or 3 part video on building a shed and not that a think it would be easy but way I've looked at them is kinda like cross between a massive box with a slightly pitched roof kinda box come she'd come log storage all into 1. I think you'd be fine doing it I am seriously considering it aswell got space out the back door thats just begging to become one for me and better let the wife use it for art work aswell but I considered doing it out stuff like 2x4s for frame 4x4s for the corner brackets and 6ml ply to complete then bit insulate and 18ml fence material which is about 1.30 a 1.8m legnths up here the now. But that could be project for the spring.
@@michaelwillson6847 Absolutley agree. It was that video that made me believe that I could do it. The only one issue I have is that we live in a terrace with zero access to the garden . So all pieces need to come through the house. Possible but hard. Also I would want to run power down there and if I did that the cost of the tools that I want would be huge.

I’ve started my French Cleat project and have taken a ‘Before’ photo of the current setup for a later date comparison. Amazon should be delivering some magnetic strips today as I thought that was the simplest starting point and I hope to get the first tools mounted before the end of the week (time and more importantly, wife, permitting)! Will send you some photos as it progresses.
Looking at your wall, you seem to have gone for quite a high gap between your cleats compared to some other builds I’ve seen. Is that because of the tool size or economy or a bit of both? I’m still trying to figure out the ideal spacing.
Don't over think the spacing based on mine . I played it entirely by ear as i tend to do. If you have more smaller tool holders you could easily put the cleats closer. If you are hanging larger ones, there is less need. The choice is all yours depending on use and aesthetics. You can't really get it too far wrong. Can't wait to see the photos and those magnet strips are perfect for small stuff and files etc. I'm toying with sticking a thin foam strip.to mine to cushion the metal on metal on my chisel one.

New to woodworking but why glue and screw?
Hi DSC, Thank you for your comment. I use screws because I don't have a brad nailer. But glue is because over time the movement will possibly loosen the joints. Mainly on the heavy use and heavy weight stuff. I hope that this helps.
