- In this video I set up a way to attempt to un-mix a liquid that has been stirred. Can you actually reverse the mixing process and get the food color back in its original location after mixing? I talk about how this can be possible and talk about entropy and eventually the heat death of the universe!

Don't worry about the entropy guys. Earth is an open system, it constantly disposes of entropy in the form of thermal radiation and gets fresh energy from the Sun. Besides that, the Sun dumps much more energy into open space. So our primary concern should not be entropy growth on Earth, but rather what to do when the Sun burns out. For this, we'd need to find another planet in another stellar system to live on. Not an easy task, so we need every bit of time we still have to solve it.

Momma O They weren’t really mixed, if you look closely the dye doesn’t actually touch so it doesn‘t actually mix, so what he is doing is basicly an illusion of mixing the dye, all he did was he spread it out and than grouped it back together, there was NO mixing of dyes.

Although I appreciate this cool demonstration, I think it's a little misleading to use the word "mix", as the different colors remain on different layers and don't ever seem to touch each other. The apparent mixing is just the overlapping of transparent layers, and I'm left unsure that this would work if the inks actually mixed.
I believe that the dyes did actually touched. It just seems like they didn't becuase it's almost inconceivable that you could literally unmix something

It's not of any concern if ink molecules touch each other or not. As long as ink doesn't clump them touching shouldn't change anything.
But you are correct in a semantic way. It's a matter of what 'mixing' means. And by defintion he did not mix tje stripes if color as mixing them would meanhe can't easiely separat them (it's literally in the definition of mixing).

At the beginning, it was more about crushing things for no aparent reason, but now you have turned it into an experiment show up and add not only accurate, but clear and easy to understand explanations with scientific (mostly chemistry) backgrounds. Its analogous to a Rubik's Cube.
If we take a solved Rubik's Cube and remember all of the steps we perform on it, then reverse them back, we will get the solved cube back.
If we blindly (randomly) mix the cube, we wont be able to revert it back and solving it then would be as hard as turning back time 😭😭
BTW solving a rubics cube isn't actually hard, you just need to memorize moves to get it solved. Most methods don't actually require too much thinking to get it solved. It's more of a party trick to solve the cube, rather than an intellectual challenge. There are plenty of tutorials online :)
dsagoa deviantart, even if you know the solution methods, you first have to look at the cube to determine the solving sequence of moves. If you don't have access to information about the cube's initial state you can't solve it. Unlike mixing up the cube. A random sequence of moves, applied blindly without knowing the initial state, would equally well mix up a solved or an unsolved cube. Only an infinitisemal probability exists that the cube would get solved after a random set of moves.
Similarly, methods for separating a mixture of chemicals do exist, but they all require access to information or some kind of discriminator device (like a seeves) that distinguishes components of the mixture. Entropy is about information. To reduce the entropy of an object you need to know or read all the information that is contained in the object and gets erased by the named entropy decrease.

I love how you always manage to acheive what is seemingly impossible simply by using the right materials and processes. I think the dislikes this video has are from people who are unaware just how big an impact the second law has on our lives, if they are even aware of it to begin with. They completely miss the point of the video which is to rethink what your idea of "mixing" is just for a second so you can appreciate just how the second law shapes our universe. This video is brilliant, and actually blew my mind a little.

It may not be as dark as it sounds. There are theories that the universe is cyclical and eventually reverses so that entropy decreases back to a singularity and then the Big Bang starts over again so that the universe is a never ending cycle.

I love Stephen Hawking's ,Brief history of time and Theory of everything.
The second law of thermodynamics is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting laws of physics. It describes the ideas of entropy, direction of heat flow, maximum thermal efficiency, reversible and irreversible processes, the direction of time, and the heat death of our universe.
All these topics are interesting, but the idea of thermal efficiency was the one that caught my eye. Simply put, given a theoretically ideal system, the system's work output cannot be 100% efficient. A easy way to explain this is by taking two bricks. One being a cold brick and the other being hot. For the thermal efficiency to be 100%, then all the heat from the hot brick is transferred to the cold brick. So to transfer the heat let's just put the bricks next to each other. Heat will flow from the hot to cold brick, but not all of it. That is simply because the temperature of the cold brick rises right when the two bricks interact, and similarly the hot brick decreases in temperature when they interact. And it is due to the changes in temperature that limits how much heat is transferred. Therefore, when both bricks reach the same temperature (or the highest entropy state i.e. equilibrium) heat will stop flowing, which causes the thermal efficiency to be less than zero because not all the heat was transferred to the cold brick from the hot brick. So all this is just to say, that even nature itself puts a limit on what it can do spontaneously.
This just came to mind too. The second law of thermodynamics is a law that works on various scales of the universe. It holds true (to our knowledge) for the cosmic scales as well as the subatomic scales. This reason I say "to our knowledge" is because there are theories that explore more bizarre things in the multiverse realm, and we have yet to test our universal laws to other universes. Let alone proving these theories. Regardless, the simple fact that 2nd law of thermodynamics appears to work on any scale shows how profound a statement it is in the place we live in. Kinda _chilling_ if you ask me.
I have seen this experiment with water or a liquid of low viscosity and quite fast spinning. Very nice to see it done with such simple equipment!

So what I've noticed for the laminar flow part, it's that the dyes are moving on a different flow lane, that's why they return to their locations when you turn it to the opposite side.
That’s not the reason they return, it’s because at low Reynolds numbers flow is reversible. It’s not a trick:)

It looked like the food coloring ended up in various layers within the syrup so that when stretched by the stirring the colors didn't actually mix together. I don't think this is a point against the demonstration though. I'm just quite curious if that's the case and if so, I wonder if that could have any major effect? I doubt it but I am nonetheless curious.
There are two phenomenon that happen during mixing; stretching and folding. Stretching is reversible and folding is not. I only performed the stretching portion of mixing in which the layers were stretched out in individual layers, but they were never folded (folding comes from turbulence).
That's because they didn't mix. They stayed on their same layer, giving an illusion of mixing, but not actually mixing.

As you have shown in fhe video doing only stretching on inks does not mix them according to the defintion of mixing, because it is reversed quite easiely. The story changes if you soak the ink up on a solid, but then you lose the ability to reverse the process easiely, which is the defintion of mixing.

The problem is not how close the colors grt to each other, but of they aee actually moxed according to what mixing means.

Well you clearly have no English knowledge. It’s “sane”
The "mixing" with the rotated Karo syrup is NOT homogenous, the colors not mixed at any point in your process with the syrup, they're just overlapping swirled shells, which are separate but appear overlaid from the side. This is an illusion of mixing, as seen from the side. From the top you should be able to see that these are still 100% not mixed. Homogeneity vs heterogeneity as related to "mixing" and "unmixing" is a point you should educate viewers on. Otherwise this video is teaching people incorrect science- you didn't unmix, you unswirled. Big difference.
If you would have showed us Chromatography you could have showed us actual unmixing.
Not true buddy. I inserted all of the dyes against the inner glass and the thickness of the dyes for sure overlapped between the 4 layers. If they were at different radial positions they would have moved at different speeds because the outer layer of corn syrup does not move, so the movement of the dye is completely dependent on radial position. Thus the reason they spread out at all is because the dye has a thickness and they all spread at the same rate which shows you their radial position is the same. Also, even if I only used one color, that is also mixing because the reason the dye gets less vibrant is because the dye is being spread thinner meaning that the Karo syrup is being inserted in between the dye molecules thus spreading it out. This is true mixing, it just has a radial order to it.
The Action Lab check this out: www.nature.com/articles/nature04380 what you have is a sheared boundary layer gradient, which is created because there's a friction against the cylinder's surface, and that transition from the stationary cylinder to the rotating liquid isn't a sharp boundary, but a gradual gradient of decreasing drag as distance from the wall increases. This means the parts of the dye nearest to the wall will move least (in the highest drag), and as the distance from the wall increases, the dye will have traveled farther around for a given amount of time (lowest drag farthest from wall). That's what shears the colors into overlapping shells- the velocity gradient. You're showing viscous fluid boundary layer dynamics which are neat, and reversible to a point, but aren't homogenous mixing.
Try it with a line of dye from inner shell wall to outer shell wall and see what it looks like from above.
I know exactly what you are saying but you have missed the whole point of the video. I am saying that at low Reynolds numbers the flow is reversible which is precisely what that article is saying.

The square and the text get stretched, but the R never touches the C, they just get closer together. This is in no way "mixed", it's just stretched and wrapped around the cylinder. That's like saying that by stretching a latex balloon with text on it that you mixed the latex and the words together. This kind of parlor trick science, is counter productive for science education when all you do is denounce that the viewer's assumptions are wrong, (I.e. it's magic) and you give them the incorrect terms with which they might actually try to go learn the concepts if you didn't elaborate. I have to say that you are just the latest in a long line of videos on RUclips to flash this trick and leave the viewer without any useful knowledge for furthering their search for the actual explanation. Steve Spangler did at least mention laminar flow in the one he did.

Love your demonstration and your concept of reversing entropy. However i personally disagree with the word "random". There's nothing random anywhere. Only un-calculate-ability and unpredictability as an effect of the above. Also the lack of means to reverse an action in most cases even if we can have all facts available. Just my two cents
I actually agree. But the connection of randomness with turbulence and irreversibility is strong, that is why i chose the terms I did without letting those unfamiliar with other terms become lost in semantics.

Unfortunately, you are wrong! the colours in the second example never actually mix, as in, they do not come physically into contact. they only appear to mix from the angle that you are shooting the video with and therefore it is incorrect to say that the colours have mixed. The correct terminology would be that two/three see-through coloured compounds are OVERLAPPING from a particular point of, which gives them the APPEARANCE that they are mixing.
No, this is still mixing. I could have used one color and it would still be mixing (the color mixes with the syrup) There are two components to mixing, stretching and folding. Stretching is happening here at low Reynolds numbers, but no folding. Stretching is the reversible part of mixing but folding (caused by turbulence) is non-reversible and that is why I avoided it. All mixing involves stretching with layers overlapping just like this.

A clear and compelling demonstration of why it's not "right" to think of entropy as "disorder" especially when the perception of disorder is based on superficial perception and preconception. I wish other discussions of entropy would make this as clear as you have here.
