    Hi, I'm from Portugal, I study biology and I love watching your videos.
    There are a few ways to get around some of the flaws in the experience.
    If you have your back to the wall and your arms down, not only are you in a more comfortable position (without your face crushed against the wall), but you also prevent your hands from escaping the glove and you can use the soles of your feet (instead of from the sides) because you can bend your legs.

    For a fun summer science project, I actually had the same idea, and had about the same success. The two biggest things I encountered were:
    1. Keeping the hands in the gloves
    and 2. Keeping the surface clean. I touched the hood of my buddy's car with it, and it stuck really well but even that thin layer of dust made it not work afterwards at all, even with the self-cleaning. So if you could somehow find a way to keep the gloves on and keep the pads clean enough to work but still be versatile enough to use consistently, then you might be golden.

  • @TheStigma
    @TheStigma 2 года назад +154

    This actually seems very plausible. I think the main problem here is more about the nanotape being very poorly integrated into and supported by the suit than the adhesion not being strong enough. If it was woven into the material and you had really good strappings to distribute the weight properly I think this would work fine. You would need to use a very different and methodical way of climbing, so it would probably require some practise to utilize fully too.
    I dont foresee people climbing up buildings like spiderman anytime soon, but I can totally see this being used to enhance climbing gloves, or even some work gloves. Usually these rely on rubber to enhance friction to prevent slipping - but this anti-shear adhesion seems way more powerful. This material is sure to have lots of usecases outside of just tape. It doesnt seem to be very expensive on a cursory search, so I think I might have to give this a try.

    • @Vaatrad
      @Vaatrad 2 года назад +6

      This. You don't want the hand to do any gripping, you don't want any question of the hand staying in the glove (to which the tape is attached). The hand needs to stay as flat as possible (when bearing weight) with strapping/structure to allow the weight to be borne at the elbow/shoulder/torso.

    • @TheStigma
      @TheStigma 2 года назад +13

      @@Vaatrad Yes, it would likely be best to have a full gauntlet up to the elbow, with rigid parts to transfer the force. You may as well add more adhesion surface to the forearm then also, allowing you more options. A weird idea worth exploring could be to have the inside also be made of nanotape (meshed) so that the force could directly be transfered to the skin very evenly and not allow any slippage. That could in theory be much simpler, cheaper and more comfortable. I dont know if sweat might impair the adhesion, but I dont see why it would be a problem to use one skin when there is no chemical or permanent bonding :)

      @zanemadden2670 2 года назад +1

      @@Vaatrad I believe it would be best to do a vest with multiple fabric strips going from the back and chest to disperse the weight, using my hand as the average the example a human hand is 18.5 in² and the tape advertises 7.7 pounds per in² giving us 144.76 per hand while both hands may give us enough strength to stick to a wall but unfortunately that is just sticking our goal is climbing. So we need a foot pad, the side of the shoe approach we saw in this video definitely would give us a stable enough platform to actually climb a wall so we either need to do it in the front of the shoe or a slightly less aesthetic but more utilitarian approach would be to have a rotating panel with a hinge that could go from straight forward 0°to a 75° angle inward to give us more wiggle room while climbing and lastly on the shoes would be the actual shoe itself, I weigh roughly 220 and supporting the remaining 75 pounds on your ankles and soles while climbing isn't fun, so as the final part of brainstorming we need to make climbing comfortable so on the bottom the shoe I made an aluminum platform the the hinge could rotate on giving us a more stable ascent. Finally all that's left is put it all together and start climbing, not that I have one 😉

    you'd have to add some type of mechanical "arms" on your sides to help you balance yourself
    Also try using the tape on your knees not your feet, with how human legs are structured your feet want to move away from the wall while your knees want to move into the wall so wearing kneepads with this tape will help much more than having it on your shoes

    Literally today, living in Hawaii, we had a golden day gecko walking around our hood and side window at 55MPH. There were some funny moments, but the dude found a safe spot and survived the 25 minute ordeal. It is a common thing here. But is really a testament to this video and the science.

      You've got the right idea. I'm working on something like this. It's got multiple functionalities, but sheer climbing is one of the new modalities I'm looking into.
      You could theoretically create Spiderman in real life through technology and the right training. Something I've been thinking about for a very long time, and it's rapidly becoming a possibility.

    I have an idea how you can make this work.
    If the gloves were made to be held with a bar grip built inside the glove, you would have much better support to hold your weight while you climb while also keeping your hand from slipping out the glove.
    I imagine this design requires its structure to be quite sturdy in order to avoid shearing the grip out from inside the glove when you put weight on it.

      If you dont mind me asking what do you mean by bar grip built inside?

    • @microcosms2420

      @@LyraPyxisVT sure. By bar grip I literally mean a bar that you grab and hold on to when you put your hand inside the glove. So instead of sticking your fingers where your fingers would normally go inside gloves, there's a horizontal bar that you can make a fist around

    Would deffo try again but with something that has more grip on you, such as an elbow-length glove or nano tape stuck to the inside of your entire forearm, just straight on the skin... though you might need to use something to prevent sweating in there. As for the feet, I think it would be worth trying again with something that will ensure your ankle doesn't bend, something like a well-tightened roller blade or ski boot... or, again, just tape on your skin

    Try it with your fingers pointed down. You’d have to have your hands near your waist to get the right angle. The problem with your fingers pointed up is that the gloves are spilling your hands out. With the open side down, it’s basically a bucket turned upside down, the perfect way to dump all its contents. Also, try it with your back to the wall and the tape on the bottom of the shoe.

    Nice try! Major problem is even the first step works, to make the next one you need unglue the arm to advance up the wall and there lies the problem as it is counterintuitive since we need the arm to stick very strong to the wall and it will require equal amount of strength to unglue it.

    Put the NANO TAPE on the INSIDES of your knees. Also, the the agrigate total of your footprint against the surface needs to be increased so that the RATIO of your "ADHESIVE-CONTACT-AREA" to BODYWEIGHT is similar to the RATIO of a gecko's FOOTPRINT to BODYWEIGHT.
