Do you think every garage tightens those bushes when compressed to ride height if not could this be the reason for premature wear? Had new brakes recently all brembo had new Trw lower control arm but I can still get steering wobble when braking 80mph+
Wondering why the ball joint replacement was not shown? that would be very helpful to those who are changing ix control arms and need to change the ball joint at the same time.
Michael Lawrence Because it requires the use of a heavy duty professional grade air hammer that most people will not have access to. The ball joint is pressed into the knuckle. The bolts are usually pretty corroded and the factory uses some pretty aggressive thread locker. You need to be very careful not the strip the heads of the bolts. If you successfully get the bolts out then you use a large air hammer and punch the ball joint through from the top. Installing them requires cleaning up the bore and slowly and evenly using the bolts to reinstall the new ball joint.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Need to do two 535ix's soon and even the local dealer techs I know, have never seen them replaced at the dealer nor any of the other local shops claim to have replaced them yet though they have done plenty of x3/x5's etc which dont seem to have the "stuck" problem like the e61's. I have to remove the recently replaced CV axle (lasted 13 months) that has already failed so I might just pull the hub to do it on the bench first and learn how bad it will be knocking that ball joint out.
Gregg Balser do you think it makes sense for do it yourselfer to replace the upper control arms and not/never replace the ball joints? Could the ball joints go bad soon after and require either the whole thing to be taken apart by a pro or never run like new with the bad ball joints? Thanks
Hi great video (as always)...I have a 2002 E39 and I'm hearing a "clunk" noise from the driver's side wheel. I've had a BMW technician check all the control arms (ball joints and bushings) and they were all in good shape. Also had the shocks (with new mounts) and coil springs changed about a year ago. Can you suggest to me anything else that I can possibly check/change to have this "clunk" rectified? Thank you in advance :)
Hi great video again i have watched all of them, i have an e53 x5 with the 3 litre 6 cylinder diesel engine, here in the uk i cant find a repair manual for it, can you tell me if the bentley manual covers the diesel engine as i could buy that one on ebay. Thanks aj
I'm about to do the install of Lemfeorder E90 Xdrive thrust arms on a recently aligned car. Now will it be necessary to get the car realigned after only thrust arms being installed?
Holy smokes, I'm so happy I found this channel
I miss BavAuto!
Thanks a lot for a fantastic tutorial. Well done.
Awesome, time for me to perform this replacement
Great video as usual! Thanks

Try sway bar end links, not a difficult repair and cheap part.
Ra0king
- Yes, Sway bar end links can indeed cuase a front-end clunk if the small ball-joint ends on the link are worn.
BavarianAuto Ra0king Will certainly have those checked out!!! Thanks :)
Good explanations
Amazing!! Thanks

What is the torque spec ?
was that driver side or passenger
Also, are the through-bolts one-time-use bolts that should be replaced?

Do you have a similar video for the 528i F10?
Thanks
What's involved in replacing the ball joint for XI? Can you just describe the steps and torque spec?
What would happen if u don't jack up the suspension ? before tightening the Through bolt
The bushings would be under torsional / twist stress which would result in early bushing failure.
Torque specs would be nice.
You make it look easy but I have 2 left toes so it'll be a challenge... Thx...
Where can I get a torque spit don't knw if I'm saying it right
Torque wrench? We have them in our on-line store - www.bavauto.com
This is bullshit my ball joint on the foward one is alway pressed in and you have to do way more work
"Bentley manual"
Bentley Publications is the publisher of the manual. Like referring to a manual as a 'Haynes manual' or 'Chilton manual'.
Horrible video. Give me the torque specs. What about the size for the torx bit? Or the wrench? You’re leaving out info.
Your out of business bro lol
