The red roofs and white walls were there historically because the tiles are from Terracota which is naturaly this color and the walls were being covered with lime because it was cheap and it protected the wall from moisture. And it is still the same today, because the city is UNESCO world heritage, so when you own the house there and you wanna do a renovation on your house you have to use the original materials and keep the original looks.

No, Czechia doesn't have any alps, our mountains are geologically much older, that's why they're much lower and smooth (we don't have those typical mountain spiky peaks)
but most of Czechia is actually higher than 200m above sea level and the majority is hilly

Some answers: Firstly, as others said before, Alps end up south of Czechia, in Austria. Pretty much whole of Czechia is located on the so called Czech Massive, a very old Primordial piece of tectonic desk that stopped the Tertiary wrinkling (I am translating Czech terms to English, hopefully not too wrongly) which raised the Alps after Africa crashed to Eurasia. This massive did not wrinkle, thus our mountains are not as high or sharp and pointy as Alps (and other youngish mountains). They are all rather like big or even huge hills, mostly round without really steep climbs (with some exceptions created however much later by glaciers) as they are either remains of much older mountains smoothed down by eons or they were raised by undulations as a secondary effect of the above mentioned Alpine wrinkling. Ještěd mountain (with it's tower on top) in particular is in Jizerské mountains.
Secondly, those structured rocks: those in Bohemian Paradise (and other similar) are made of sandstone and were carved in those shapes by wind, water and ice through many millennia. And as for those basaltic rocks looking like organ pipes, those layers probably were originally horizontal but were broken and moved or turned by some geological processes.
And thirdly, yes, we did fight with the Ottoman Empire, as we were then part of Austrian (later Austro-Hungarian, though that change was way after Ottoman wars) Empire which fought many battles and wars with Ottomans and helped to stop their advance into Europe.

The red roof and white walls are not common everywhere, but it had to do with the available materials. Roofing material as well as bricks were made from clay available in the region. Where this material was scarce, for example, houses were made of wood or straw and large buildings such as castles , fortresses, churches or bridges were made of stone.

      Yes. From Wikipedia:
The country [Liechtenstein] has an international dispute with Czech Republic and Slovakia concerning the estates of its princely family in those countries. After World War II, Czechoslovakia, as it then was, acting to seize what they considered to be German possessions, expropriated the entirety of the Liechtenstein dynasty's hereditary lands and possessions in the Czech regions of Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. The expropriations (which were the subject of an unsuccessful court case brought by Liechtenstein in the German courts and the International Court of Justice) included over 1,600 km² (which is ten times the size of Liechtenstein) of agricultural and forest land mostly in Moravia, also including several family castles and palaces. An offer from the Czech Republic to return the palaces and castles (without the surrounding land) was rejected by Liechtenstein.
Liechtenstein recognised and established diplomatic relations with the Czech Republic on 13 July 2009 and with Slovakia on 9 December 2009. Liechtenstein's ruling prince, Hans-Adam II, has announced that the principality will take no further legal action to recover the appropriated assets.

Those mountains were settled by Germans (Sudetenland), in the late 1400s, in a valley there, they found the first big silver strike, at Joachimsthal (Jacob's Valley). They started making big silver coins there, nicknamed thalers. In Dutch this became a daler. In New Amsterdam (NYC) this became a dollar.

    1. The Word "Robot
    - Origin: The word "robot" was introduced in the play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) by Czech writer Karel Čapek (1920). The term was actually coined by his brother Josef Čapek.
    - In the U.S.: Americans use the word "robot" daily, but very few know its Czech origin.
    2. Budweiser (Beer Name)
    - Origin: The name Budweiser was inspired by Czech beer from the town of České Budějovice (German: Budweis).
    - Difference: American Budweiser (by Anheuser-Busch) is not directly related to Czech Budweiser (Budějovický Budvar), but the name is derived from it.
    - In the U.S.: Many Americans don't realize that the name of their favorite beer has Czech roots.
    3. Mushroom Foraging
    - Origin: Mushroom foraging is a deeply rooted tradition in the Czech Republic.
    - In the U.S.: Foraging has gained popularity in recent years, but most Americans are unaware of its cultural significance in Czech traditions.
    4. Czech Crystal (Bohemia Crystal)
    - Origin: Czech crystal is one of the finest in the world, and many glass products sold in the U.S. are made in the Czech Republic.
    - In the U.S.: Americans often admire luxurious glassware and chandeliers without realizing their Czech origin.
    5. Coffee in Cans (e.g., Maxwell House)
    - Origin: The process of roasting and preserving coffee in cans was developed by Czech inventor Karel Havlíček Borovský.
    - In the U.S.: This method of coffee distribution is commonplace, but few know about its Czech origins.
    6. Bata Shoes
    - Origin: The global footwear giant Baťa was founded in Zlín, Czech Republic.
    - In the U.S.: While the Bata brand is less known in the U.S., its methods of mass production and retail concepts influenced the entire footwear industry.
    - In the U.S.: Many Americans are unaware of the Czech roots of this global company.
    7. Contact Lenses
    - Origin: Modern soft contact lenses were invented by Czech scientist Otto Wichterle.
    - In the U.S.: Millions of Americans wear contact lenses daily, yet the Czech origin is virtually unknown.
    8. The Oscar Statuette
    - Origin: The iconic Oscar statuette was designed by sculptor with Czech roots, Josef Rosenthal.
    - In the U.S.: The Oscar is one of the most recognized awards globally, but its Czech design remains little known.
    9. Pilsner (Beer Style)
    - Origin: The first pale lager of the Pilsner type was brewed in Plzeň in 1842.
    - In the U.S.: Pilsner is one of the most popular beer styles, but few know its origins trace back to the Czech Republic.
    10. Nanotechnology Patents
    - Origin: The Czech Republic is a pioneer in nanotechnology, with patents used in the U.S. for water filtration and medical materials.
    - In the U.S.: Americans often don’t realize that many advanced technologies have Czech origins.
    11. The Word "Dollar"
    - Origin: The name "dollar" comes from the Czech word tolar, referring to the silver coins called Jáchymovský tolar (minted from 1519 in the town of Jáchymov, Czech Republic).
    - History: Tolars were widely used across Europe and eventually lent their name to the currencies used in North America, including the U.S. dollar.
    - In the U.S.: The dollar is one of the most recognized currencies in the world, but few Americans know its name traces back to the Czech Republic.
    Summary:
Americans regularly use words, technologies, and products with Czech origins - from the word "robot" to the name "dollar," Pilsner beer, and contact lenses - without knowing their origins. Czech influence is subtle but significant, enriching everyday life in the U.S. more than people realize.

The biggest one is called Rožmberk and it measures 1.9 squared miles. They have a special name, which doesn't translate well to english called "Rybník" derived from "Ryba" which means fish and they are by definition artificial, made to keep fish.

Battles were fought on the border crossings in White Carpatians and Turks broke the defenses and raided as far as Brno and Přerov in 1663/4. Only in the district of Uherské Hradiště, 49 towns and villages were burned down and everyone over 40 years old was massacred, the rest taken back to Ottoman Empire and put into slavery.

If you were asking about the contact with the Ottomans due to existence of minaret, the legend is this. Duke of Lichtenstein was looking to build something, and the first idea that he will build a new church, but he was unable to make an agreement with people in Lednice about the new church. So in the end he had decided that he will build a mosque as the orientalism was all te rage. (There also was a Chinese pavilion in the park, but that If I am not mistaken, had burned down) But when the construction had begun, they soon found out, that the soft, muddy soil can't, even with all the oaken pilling, bear the weight of proposed mosque, so in the end only minaret was build.

    • @petrskupa6292

It was exactly that … and slightly more spicy in case of Lednice at the same time:
You now at that time the Lichtenstein prince had some beef with mayor and council of the small town his Lednice castle was within (it was already 19th century so he had no absolute rule over). He proposed that he would subsidize construction of new representative church for Lednice town on the central square - yet he had some condition (I don’t remember, some special requirements which would jeopardize something else), which were unacceptable for the townsfolk.
      They rejected him.
He, partly out of spite and out of mockery decided to build minaret instead (at the end of his massive romantic park, where this type of building was ended fashionable, that is true. Reportedly this was however the first inspiration)

The Alps are not here, someone already wrote about it here, but they are not that far away, in the east of the republic the Carpathians begin, as for the Zvíkov castle, it is the Orlická dam, which was built in 1954-1961 of the last century with an area of 27.32 km² and a volume of 720,000,000 m³, so at the time of the castle, there was a deep cut to the water surface. Lednice castle and the entire area, which includes several villages and towns, is all artificially built, they are artificial ponds and the Minaret is only a decoration from the Orient, such an addition to the park, the note is that it is tilted by several degrees. because not only the Liechtensteins but also the Habsburgs ruled here and they had great property here. And the founding of Prague was around 723 AD.

The thing about all these houses and buildings (not just the Czech Republic and these houses) but with a lot of buildings in Europe is that history, cities/buildings in Europe can be 100 years old if not older and at that time you had to take the materials that were in those countries or regions, it wasn't as easy as it is today to transport from other countries :)

keep in mind that also US-American cities have despite some people thinking they are all modern often still buildings from centuries ago. The oldest house in New York for instance is the Dutch 'Wycloff house' from 1652. And also they as well as for instance the more known 'Brownstone houses' from the 19th century were also created from the next spots which offered such materials (in the case of the brownstones from nearby Pennsylvania. Btw, those brownstones were built exactly the same time as the German 'Gruenderzeit' (because both countries boomed at that time more than the big competitors) which also used material from nearby pots which offered the necessary resources). Long story short: Europeans AND also Americans should know about that, because it was in general common to build houses this way and just in more modern time this changed (partly, because its often also today its often still the same).

just remember this: there are 8/eight 'Alps/Alpen countries/states' which also work in different organization related to the Alps together: Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Monaco. Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy also work together as 'Arge Alps' (German: Arbeitsgemeinschaft Alpen). Technically tiny parts of Hungary, Croatia etc. are also part of the Alps but not enough to consider them as 'Alp countries'. Liechtenstein is the only country which area is full part of the Alps. Austria comes next with about 60% (and third of the whole Alp population is living there).

You can see those interesting rock formations in Czechia kind of similar/connected to the ones on the German side which are all part or connected to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains (Elbe Sandstone Highlands).. Elb/Elbe is a river (which also runs over Dresden to and through Hamburg btw.). Terms which are associated with this mountain range is 'Saechische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland) and/or Boehmische Schweiz (Bohemian Switzerland) The Saxon Switzerland and Bohemian Switzerland national parks, known also as Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland, are located within the territory of those Elbe Sandstone Mountains. You have on both sides, in Czech as well as in Germany a lot of those interesting rock formations which are generally spoken different to the ones you find in the Alpen/Alps due to the different material mixes they are made of and therfor also how they have been created in the first place. Its a bit similar to the difference between the Rocky Mountains and the Monument Valley regions ...

    - it's actually a very "not controversial" question, since it's a rare occasion of two countries splitting without any sort of military conflict. They just agreed to do in 1993, shortly after the fall of the communism regime. But they still remain very close, calling the other country "brothers" and such. Czechia is just shorthand.. It make more sense in Czech (Česko), German (Tschechien) or French (Tchéquie)... I admit I do not like the English version as many end up calling us Chechnya :)))))) The red roofs are more or less traditional (made from clay) and most if not all historical centres are protected with very strict rules and regulation of what you could or could not do when restoring (even if its your own home). In Prague and Krumlov (Krumlov is only 20min away by train-bus from my hometown and where i live = city of Budweis) its almost mandatory to use a certain colour + type of roofing to keep the historical fabric of the place..
Unfortunately we don't have proper mountains. the highest is in the north with its peak around 1600m... A Czechoslovakia, the great Tratra mountains in east Slovakia was more deserving of the title. Interestingly enough, the Czech republic is surrounded by low mountains and highlands from all sides (it looks like bowl), so you can spot the borders very easily from space and earth pics... Thus when looking at our borders from maps in the 1200s and 1300s, the Kingdom of Bohemia borders are almost the same... The Carpathians start east of Brno and then continues to Slovakia...

It was a place where they would invite other dynasties, dignitaries and people of power to awe them and show off their wealth. This place was also a part of a dispute between Czech Republic and Principality of Liechtenstein, which haven't recognized Czech Republic as a sovereign state until 2009 because of it.
11:57 many European Houses held counties in different "states" ("" because what we view as a 'state' nowdays is very different than what it meant 100 years ago. Remember that monarchy is based on allegiances and relationships between ruling families, not geography), or simply states that they were part of simply dissolved into smaller independent countries (which is the case here)
12:00 not controversial. it was brought by a wave of apathy
12:58 not "battle" they shared border for several hundred years. What I believe you are referring to is siege of Vienna in 1529 by Ottomans. At that time, Archduchy of Austria (of which Vienna was the capital) was part of Holy Roman Empire, which also included lands of Bohemia and Moravia. So yes, Czechs had contact with the Ottomans
14:02 s**t was already about to go down and this was just that one spark that set the world ablaze....

If you live in a place, that is protected because it´s a historical reservation or something like that, you have to keep the look and status of your house, that´s why they´r all white with the red roof, but not just that. The red roofing was for a longest time prestige thing. You did not see that on houses in villages, maybe a Mayer, the poor people also couldn't afford to build from bricks so when they did not want to build from thatch, they could rocks, they found in rivers and such, that´s how lots of our castles got destroyed, or they could build from wood, but it was as bad as thatch, you can´t expect such a house to last. As you could see we build to last.

  • @Pidalin

1:18 - it's related to both - material and sight keepers not allowing to use anything different and also everything was renovated in last 30 years, so roofs look pretty much new, check old videos from communist time, roods had many shades of grey, black and brown back in the day 😀
BTW, "many holy Roman emperors" means just Charles IV and Rudolph II, but we like to exaggerate it how many of them were sitting in Prague 😀
5:02 - Czechis is actually very car centric nation (probably because of so many car brands located here) and it's neverending fight between local Praguers and high class people traveling to Prague with their SUVs and blocking historical squares for no reason + a lot of annoying cars with D on their plate, I don't know why Germans are that annoying with their cars and try to get everywhere, but I guess it's the same reason - a lot of car history in their country. Today mayor of Prague is from pretty much car centric party, so things will get worse for pedestrians, previous government (Pirates) did a lot of things for pedestrians and for getting rid of cars (turning squares back to squares, not parking lots etc....), not all of them were successfull, but they at least tried. Prague will turn into traffic hell in next years with new wave of "moving of nations" because those people bring their village car culture with them and native Praguers hate it.
And don't take me wrong, I am not some commies who wants to ban cars, I just believe that when you freedomly make a decision to live on gothic square in historic city with narrow streets, you should have enough brain cells, to let your car in some garages out of center or get rid of it completely, but for these people, it's just symbol of their status, they want to bee seen on oldtown square in SUV and they don't care that people think they are idiots, you often see them how they scratch their cars or stuck somewhere and you see how people who walk around have fun because of it, and still, they will do it again and go there by car next day. 😀
11:04 - we don't have any bigger natural lakes in Czechia, all bigger bodies of water you see are ponds, artifical lakes or water dams. 🙂
13:01 - Yes, ofcourse, Austrian rulers were sending Czechs to fight ottomans and turks for centuries, it's even part of some of our fairytale stories.
14:00 - This is what we learn in Czech schools - WWI didn't start because of assassination, it was just excuse for starting war, but it would start anyway.

The Ottomans were stopped at Vienna, but in the South Moravian legends there are mentions of their raids, probably by reconnaissance units.
The minaret in Lednice may suggest this, but it is a romantic building, it was never intended to serve the needs of the muezzins, and as far as I know it never did.

Your question regarding split of Czechoslovakia, it's not very controversial, it was very peaceful and it ultimately boils down to ,,Hey, so we kinda want to do our thing and you want to do yours, we always clash where institutions and industry should be built, let's split up. Aight, bet." Some claim the people were never even properly informed and it just happened. To this day, Czechs and Slovaks just walk hand in hand. You should watch a video on that, namely ,,Velvet Divorce"

The countries have split because Slovakia felt left behind, and Czechia was like, yup, let's split. It's not a sensitive topic. The further away we are from the split, the more the differences show. It was only for the best, only leaving the close relations between each other, as hundreds if not thousands of families live scattered over the two countries.

Well, we had contact with the Ottomans. Our future king Sigismund fought them in the battle of Nicopolis. But first time we came to real contact was in battle of Mohács, where they killed our king Louis II. and his dynasty died out. Later we fought them as part of the Habsburg monarchy, and later, when we revolted, threw some men of the window (our speciality) and effectively started 30 years war, we tried to persuade the sultan to attack Austria, which he kind of did, via his vassals, but to late to help support uprising. But this minaret was built in the 19th century, when Europe was fascinated with the Orient, and was designed by Josep Hartmut, our famous enterpriser and architect, who invented new pencil (or improved it, if you like).

The word ROBOT was the brainchild of a Czech playwright, novelist and journalist named Karel Čapek (1880-1938) who introduced it in his 1920 hit play, R.U.R., or Rossum’s Universal Robots. Robot is drawn from an old Church Slavonic word, robota, for “servitude,” “forced labor” or “drudgery.”

The center/heard of Europe is Germany if you combine all criterions to a vague but pragmatic usable result. Everything else is wrong. One should btw not mistakes that with Central Europe (in German: Mitteleuropa) which as a region includes many countries/regions. There is additionally a kind of Greater Central Europe (which includes for instance France) which makes sense for some contexts like for instance talking about a certain Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age region/culture/people - or in other contexts like the Frankish Empire as hotspot (which also included different countries) etc... Anyway, if one looks at 'THE' geographical dot as center then there is none. Instead you have many different ones as result of many different ways to measure it. Thats why also Wikipedia does not answer this question but gives instead a certain overview about different results of different measurements. And this will not change irrelevant whatever one tries to make up. Keep in mind that there is no logical' geographical reason why Europe (or Asia) starts from a certain region in the first place. There is even no single logical reason why continents are continents. All of that are in reality a collection of different flawed criterion which kind of help as a vague result to order the world/reality. Thats btw. also just the sense of categories. And that you cannot measure a single 'dot' as center should already be obvious if you are aware about that you could start to measure from the continental plate Europe lies also on (and which lays as a huge part under water and give a totally different terrain shape) OR you could measure from the shelf regions around the coasts of Europe OR you could measure from Europe including/excluding the oversea territories. Including Greenland or not makes a huge difference (apropos: there are also good reasons why Greenland could also be considered a continent). Long story short: it is already a WRONG idea wo think that you only measure the 'visible' terrain which in reality also changes every day and a lot btw. also since the medieval age. There are also many more things to consider which in the end of the day results again in that you can only give for pragmatic reasons an idea of a center which fits best to the masses of different blurry definitions and the best result is: Germany - a said, as combination of different criterion, from the economic powerhouse in the center, historically (since the decline of the Classic Western Roman Empire as part of the core region of the Frankish Empire 'Austrasia' with Netherlands/Belgium (center was Aachen/Germany) , later the Holy Roman Empire, part of the biggest (and also due to the HRE) megapolis of Europe (blue banana) with most cities, castles, most of most things, geographically due to its interface situation between Italy and Scandinavia (which was historically and still much wealthier with much more traffic/trade then the other interface regions farer East), most people etc... you also have here because of that most inner European transit or destination traffic of products, people etc.. which is btw. also one main reason why Germany (partly also the Netherlands, Belgium) have in the 21. century with much increased traffic have more problems with their train infrastructure as for instance Japan or Switzerland which are NOT in the hotspot! Keep also in mind that all renaissances, all reforms etc. happened in this region of the at first Frankish and then Holy Roman Empire - and also most wealthy kingdoms were exactly here - for a similar reason why also the most wealthy countries/regions are kind of in and around Germany (but not France which was most of the time less wealthy just like today and more culturally between South and Central Europe!. France is also behind UK which is good to compare since almost the same population size and part of the West etc... - even with Brexit!)

Hello, yes there is a beef between Czechia and Lichtenstein family. After the second world war their estates were confiscated (nationalized) under communist supervision. However that happened in 1946 during the third Czechoslovak republic. Restitutions can only be claimed down to 1948 (the communist coup of democratic (even thought communist led) coalition government). Therefore Czech republic doesnt respect their claim and there are leagal disputes from nineties up to this day.

White walls make better sense in Southern Europe (typically Greece) - white reflects sunlight, so the houses are not as hot. In Bohemia, since the Middle Ages, the most common wall colour (in towns) is ochre yellow - in the countryside it was white (because it was cheapest to paint a house with lime).
