The sad thing is, Peterson will say this profound wisdom and some people will still label him with the same evils he is trying to help others over come.
+M McQuarrie it's all about personal accountability/responsibility; some are fortunate to be taught this as children and others of us have to seek it. we find what we seek.
My father and his two brothers grew up with a raging alcoholic father who beat them and their mother on a regular basis, but they all broke the cycle of abuse, liberating me, my brothers and our cousins from our fathers’ demons. These men are true heroes who no one outside of our family will ever know. I tell others about them in an attempt to raise a torch of hope that I hope others will see and find courage within themselves, that they have the power to reject resentment and choose a higher path.
Wonderful that you are aware of their heroism. As someone in the process of trying to break the cycle, I can tell you that the process of trying is enough to break a person 10x over. And what makes it more difficult is the sands of time working against you. Also the constant fear that you will fail to recognize something deep within you that is so broken that you haven't the ability to become aware of it. And therefore, it will damage your hypothetical children in a way that will crush them before they have the chance to defend themselves.
This is a major generational psychic victory. Congratulations to you and your pops and uncles. I hope my kids are able to speak of me so fondly one day.
I almost cried listening to this, this rule 6 relates closely to myself and my family. How bad experiences can be turned into lessons for good instead of vengeance. Thank you Dr. Jordan.
I cried on n off through the whole thing. Mainly because of my daily struggles between being a good honest person or a demonic device for Satan's will. I don't believe in a God or devil but good and evil r the foundations of humanity.
Truth is not subjective. It is what it it is regardless of one's perception. I can tell you from experience. I used to not be this way but through observation and experience I have learned There is a God. Jesus is real. His ghost is here. He provides comfort when I am alone and he loves when I can't love myself. This is true and I have no way of ever undoing it. I hope the best for you. Look up my friend. There is someone watching you.
@@itoibo4208 Good and evil exist even if you don't exist. I know there is a God. You know this whole world is a miracle in the first place. Dr. Peterson I purchased your VIP for your Dallas lecture and I look forward to meeting you and thanking you in person. You have really changed my life.

Something Jordan has taught me. A man with a purpose is a force to be reckoned with. A righteous man with a righteous purpose is unstoppable. Strength to you Dr. Peterson. You are necessary to we, the fatherless lost.
Dr. Peterson, giving away a chapter of your book for free this way is just the sort of grace filled action I've come to expect from you. You are a very fine man. As a man without parents, I am glad and proud that the universe has given me the wisdom to consider you a role model.
I am glad you enjoyed the reading and do not mean to be rude, I will simply tell you that "giving away a chapter" is also (possibly in any reality/sub universe) known commonly as ADVERTISING. Thanks and regard.
Oh Gosh Dr. Peterson. With your understanding of human behavior I admire the hell out of you for not being a bitter, cynical SOB. God bless you sir. The World's a better place because of you.
Big Papi his understanding is exactly why he's able to be patient. Patience is not a commodity for one who delves into and studies the psych, it's mandatory.
Yet, it's the cynical ones whose rejection of any sacredness of humanity will lead them to the new discoveries that we need in order to better our perspective.
I hate to say it… But I fear that the polarization of Peterson due to the way that he has been misconstrued in the media, and in left wing circles, may mean that he may never be honored in that way at least in his lifetime. The sad reality is (I believe in 20 or so years,) that we will eventually look back on Dr. Peterson as one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented people of all time. I only hope that we can get to a point, hopefully soon, where more famous people speak out in favor of Peterson and his overall message. That way he may at least get most of the respect he deserves before he dies. But to be honest with you, ultimately I don’t believe it really matters to him. As long as he knows that he is doing the right thing and getting closer to God as he wrestles with the forces of the world and beyond. I don’t have any doubt in my mind that regardless of how he dies, he will ultimately be at peace with knowing that he has helped as many people as he has. Evidenced by the way he responds in kind in his interviews where he talks about it. Not to mention how clearly proud his family is of him. Sadly though, that may be the best we can hope for.
@@calskywalker95 Pretty sure he said he follows his wife to find god, she is the one leading him closer. I think Dr. Peterson has it figured out. He hasn't found "the answer," but he has figured out how to find it. As JBP calls it "the perfect mode of being." If he's really following his wife then he clearly isn't doing this for the fame like you said here "I don’t believe it really matters to him." And I also agree that he isn't going to be "known" in his lifetime and I don't think JBP knows that either. But the millions of people who can say literally "I owe him my life" will carry his legacy idk how far into the future. Could spark a golden age of consciousness galaxy wide in 500 years.
"Don't blame capitalism, the radical Left, or the iniquity of your enemies. Don't reorganize the state until you have ordered your own experience. Have some humility! If you cannot bring peace to your household how dare you try to rule a city."
I think we all live with a level of anxiety due to the fact that we are lied to as soon as we come out the womb. And we know it and feel it but are encouraged to relinquish our knowledge of the truth. You sir, are an agent of truth, that helps to alleviate that sense of low grade anxiety that dwells in mot of us. And you can't ask for much more in order to be content. Thank you for your intelligence, passion, honesty and humility. You are making the world better. You are definitely a role model for how I would like to show up in the world. May you continue to have health, wealth, peace, and blessings.
The lies are derived from culture. Culture is not your friend and watching people embrace tradition is fine, but without an understanding of which aspects are actually negative and imply to the individual that self interest is bad, you must commit to the common good is being a victim to the lie. The Lie is By Design. It' is Satan's great feat pushed upon us by the Zionists who run the banking system and control us through a fiat system that places us in immediate debt, so to be a slave forever. The fact that most men still aren't acknowledging the picket fence lie is amazing. The pussified male is a byproduct of this lie and they still don't get it. Santa Claus was created in order to instill one of many first lies in children, the tooth fairy, storks, and even the lies parents are taught to control their children. Kids figure out when their parents are lying to them. What do you think that leads to? More lying. Truth is found within when you are seeking, thinking, creating a discipline of listening to what all the ramblings are about and drawing conclusions. It's a discipline but if you are indeed a genuine person, and most in society are not, you can rely on this discipline to achieve greater understandings of these lies as well as many other facets of life. Our culture feeds a notion that most people don't want to hear; parents have kids so they can have someone to instill their fears into. Kids are an extension of their parents and those fears are lies by nature and they expect their children to adopt those fears/lies. It's disgusting, and this is not to say that all parents do this as the ones who have a greater degree of truth in their veins don't, but we aren't talking about them. We are talking about the majority, a lot of immigrant Irish/English to start with who brought over a psychology of such dysfunction while pretending to be normal. It's culture and a cultural way of thinking that is a disease. Once I myself removed my mind and body from these people, who may have been good, but had these qualities, I was able to be happy and think clearly. I don't hate my culture, I am just weary of the tentacles it has to draw me in to wasting my life on it. Something to think about.
An old man told his grandson, "my son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all." "One is Evil. It is anger, jealously, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, and truth." The boy thought about it and asked, "Grandfather, which wolf wins?" The old man quietly replied, "the one you feed."
One should feed both wolves. Feeding both, the good and the bad, keeps the good wolf near and dear. Feeding the bad wolf, fills his belly full and keeps him satiated. A hungry wolf, good or bad, will do anything to eat. It’s really close to what Carl Jung talked about. The shadow. Accepting and bringing close that about you that is “dark”. The version of this story, the one you just told, has a very different ending when told from an actual Cherokee. It goes like this. “If you feed them right, they both win”. “You see, if I only choose to feed the white wolf, the black one will be hiding around every corner waiting for me to become distracted or weak and jump to get the attention he craves. He will always be angry and always fight the white wolf. But if I acknowledge him he is happy and the white wolf is happy and we all win”. “For the black wolf has many qualities: tenacity, courage, fearlessness, strong will and great strategic thinking that I have need of at times and that the white wolf lacks. But the white wolf has compassion, caring, strength and the ability to recognize what is in the best interests of all.” “To feed and care for both means they will serve you well and do nothing that is not a part of something greater, something good, something of life.” “Feed them both and there will be no more internal struggle for your attention, and when there is no battle inside you can listen to the voices of deeper knowing that will guide you in choosing what is right in every circumstance.” “Peace, my son, is the Cherokee mission in life. A man or woman who has peace inside has everything. A man or woman who is pulled apart by the war inside him or her has nothing. How you choose to interact with the opposing forces within you will determine your life. Starve one or the other or guide them both.”
+Aaron Samuel In Ontario there is a diabetes inducing emphasis on "positivity" from Kindergarten to grade 12 (though it thankfully fades in high school) . It's less of a failure to understand that "negativity begets negativity", and more the pretense that it's easily swept away if people just think right, that we can be molded en masse to love everyone. And failure to recognize the shadow side of that line of thinking.
I watched the footage of the stoneman school shooter talking to his brother after the atrocity. His brother walked in and said, “I fear that you did this because I never said I love you enough. So I’m here to say, I love you.” The shooter burst into tears, hearing that shattered his whole world, and made what he had done suddenly real to him.
ouf! reminds of a ted talk i just saw where the speaker said he wanted to shoot his peers when he was in school and it was only the compassion of his only friend that prevented him of doing so.

Sepher Agon sure. They just were broken or shaped to not listen. A switch for empathy and compassion for humans shut off. Remember we are all that is good and evil, the prisoners and the prison guards.
The raw, unmitigated truth cut through me like a hot knife. Peterson‘s dedication to the truth is brave - unflinching and unapologetic. Here is someone who has looked into the abyss without closing his eyes and his ability to make sense of what he has seen is his gift to humanity..
This chapter always hits close to home. I very nearly fell to the depths of the hateful rejection of being, though I somehow made it through. Damaged, but I refuse to punish the innocent for the reality of the world. Your work has been an anchor, helping to keep me here for my daughter. Thank you.
It’s so damn unfair there’s only one of him in this life....if god really loves us he would’ve given us all a full time Jordan Peterson to follow us around!
What psychotropic drugs was the shooter on? Here is the best explanation I have heard, other than the blatant 33 page Broward County agreement, which hamstrung law enforcement - it is entitled: The Promise Program, a neo-marxist creation of Obama et al. My two links are Dr. Peter Breggin, who in his 80's is still as lucid and compelling as he ever was, and the 33 page document I consider a Threat and a Promise - which bore fruit on Valentines Day with the Florida shooting. ruclips.net/video/wOYWFEet5K8/видео.html and the widely circulated Obama initiative to ensure the neo-marxist agenda to terrorize would be pulled off without a hitch. imho read the evidence for yourself. www.scribd.com/document/372308388/Broward-County-Promise-Program-Fully-Executed-Collaborative-Agreement-Final-Document? It is regrettable that Dr. Peterson is not looking at the obvious facts surrounding this tragic terror event.
"He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." This is very relatable to your lesson. I love how deeply you covered that. These are fundamentals we've lost sight of. Thank you for your part in bringing it back.
I keep coming back to this video every time tragedy strikes in my life. I start spiraling into nihilism very easily, and every word Dr. Peterson says brings me out of it in this particular video. Thank you with all of my heart for giving me meaning and truth.
I'm thinking of taking a psychology course. Even if it's online. I want to be able to think with this level of depth and articulation. If not for anything, but at the very least, to pass on valuable knowledge and training to my kids when they come.

I am 57 and I agree completely. My kids are in their 30's now, and I told them when they were 18 or 19 that the decisions they make over the next few years will set their path for the rest of their lives...they are doing well and seem to have made some good choices.
@SadRahne Yes...and I believe person A has an even greater chance at a good life, provided they WANT ONE. Often times the persons "B" are consumed with an entitlement mentality (spoiled) or "guilt" (provided by our institutes of "higher learning"), and go on to wreck a potentially great life.
@SadRahne It's true that we have the play the cards dealt us in life. You still need to make choices and it's those choices more than anything else that will determine how your life unfolds.
@@triggerhappydad65 This disparity of choices occurs worldwide, even in places with no entitlement programs. I would expect a lot of wealthy people living in third world nations if it simply boiled down to choices.
Thank god for choices. Have a friend who burnt in car accident and not her fault. Can't do much at all, just waiting to die. I bet If she could speak or write again she would say she should't have been behind the wheel of a vehicle knowing it is dangerous and you can potentially get trapped and burned alive. No more choices left for her now really.

I always wondered how people could be so blind to say “we don’t understand” when something like this happens. Mr. Peterson hits the nail directly on the head with this one. Destroying innocence as a form of revenge against god has to be the oldest motivation for atrocity. If you say that you don’t understand that then you are either ignorant to the inherent suffering of life or you’re lying.
It's more like, "We choose to ignore the obvious lesson, because it would mean giving up the naive belief that all people are good at heart. To believe that I am capable of such violence, instead of thinking that the killers were somehow monsters or aliens, would be too uncomfortable for me to face." I've seen people like this. Their pacifist nature doesn't come from morality, but laziness. It's easier to believe that whatever you don't look at, doesn't exist.
And it is nihilistic to state "animals they deserve it infinitely more than we do." That is the problem of the Left, they have cut religion out with disastrous effect and it could be predicted, so I assume the left is evil.
I'm really destroyed today. My entire foundation of reason is in rubble. it has always been. I just never saw it. I always thought J.P. was foolish, that we just needed anti depressants. Now I see that isn't the case at all. I was the fool. I am completely in a mess and yet I have been criticizing and hating the world more than ever these days. I know the world is partially evil and worthy of some blame even if it's just blaming yourself. But I have been imagining horrible forms of reality and calling them certain and true even though I have no idea about them. I want to enjoy life. I want to enjoy existence. But I have no trust in anything but my logic. And my logic is weak and full of holes. And it's driving me insane.
Thanks you guys. I feel a lot better these days because I have realized I have meaning in Jesus Christ and in Jehovah and the Bible because I was blessedly raised with it and so I identify with it but also because I feel this really is the Word of God revealed to man and I am structuring my life around it now which is working our splendidly for me. Praise God!
Relax, breath, and listen to same good music. Stop watching leftists. They are a plague on society. I play pool and go to taekwondo. Both aid social development and help mental toughness. Keep watching good honest people like Peterson. I wish you the best.
I identify deeply with you. I came from a very similar place. One that also is mentioned in this video via the school shooters and Carl Panzram. I used to want to destroy all of mankind. I would fantasize/brag to people that if I was put in charge of guarding "the button" that would launch nuclear missiles (ending in mutually assured destruction) that I would just push the button as soon as I possibly could. My life eventually became so intolerable that it became clear I either had to kill myself or seek someone else's solution because I could stand it no longer. That led me on a very similar path written and talked about by Jordan Peterson. Having cleaned up my life for 7 years I can say that he is exactly on the money. Life can not only be bearable but also be worth living despite it being unfair/cruel at times. There is nothing special about me that allowed me to take this path. I just didn't want to die for nothing and I became willing to take someone else's advise without even believing in it. I am now very happy in all my endeavors and have been able to weather life's storms and take responsibility for my own life. If a dumb schmuck like me can do it anyone can.
For a religious perspective: God gave us free will, and dominion over the world. It is the responsibility of each member of mankind to make the world a better place. And while Adam ceded dominion over the world to Satan/the Adversary in committing original sin, God has given us his guidance and his Word recorded in The Bible to understand how to make this right. It is not God's place to make the world a better place, as he is given us the world to make it a better place with his guidance. It is not our place to blame God or the structure of reality for that which is our responsibility. And while there are times that we suffer from things out of our control, we remain in control of how we suffer, and how we handle the strain. God also warns that there are evil man in the world who will cause suffering and destruction around them. So it is also our duty to guard against those who would bring pain and suffering to others for their own gain.
Really enjoyed this chapter. Addicted to class A drugs for 20yrs, in a cell for 10yrs, am out coming up a year & if I'm listening to this-then, am I beginning to finally see a way out???
God bless you - It is worth every effort you make. If you slip- forgive yourself and start again... you are allowed. We all have to try not to make the same mistakes- sometimes we have to leave all we know... I had to do that. It was not easy-still is not, but it is better and will continue to improve. You are worth it too. Be a good strong man for someone who needs a good strong man. Kindness is NOT weakness.
George, you ARE beginning to see a way out. Remember, every day is a new day. Each breath you take offers the possibility for change and hope for the future.
Hey bro if you want I have another copy of Jordan Petersons self authoring program. (It's an online writing program)Look into it and then . If you are intersted hit me up through here.
I agree with much of what Peterson says, particularly on this topic. And I thank him for his teaching and his opinions. But I also have to say that the growing cult of personality around him is disturbing, especially amongst conservative Christians. Too many people are treating him like some prophet. He's just a man, people. A smart man with many interesting things to share, but a man. He's not a fountain of all truth. Treat his words like any other: consider them, put them on the scales, judge them. Do your own thinking.
Agreed. Peterson is a unique type. His knowledge of the psychological side of religion allows him to speak in a manner that is very metaphysically compelling. It's no accident that he is developing a cult of personality. That being said, it is very unlikely he's malicious. He just understands the power of speaking mindfully, honestly, and passionately.
Ink, that's all very true. But the point remains: a cult of personality is building around Peterson, and I think Peterson the professional psychoanalyst would be the first to understand and recognise why this is happening, and what the dangers are. Too many people are treating Peterson as a political saviour -- attacking their enemies (feminists, SJWs, snowflakes, commies, whatever) -- rather than just a very learned man with interesting, useful things to say. It's hero worship rather than education and a testing of one's viewpoints. If anything, it would appear that too many people are flocking to Peterson not for what he says about the human condition, but because of political tribalism. Just look at all the Christian right-wingers flocking here, because Peterson mentions the bible regularly, despite his obvious distaste for fundamentalism.
I think Peterson does understand and recognize his cult of personality. My question is: what can he do about it? I hate partisanship/tribalism as much as the next guy, but it's quite difficult(impossible) to get people to stop behaving in human ways. Peterson is incredibly careful with his words, and he's stringently anti-radical. He shouldn't be held responsible for the behavior and language of people who watch his videos.
I do think he has _some_ responsibility to address the issue of hero-worship, tribalism towards him though I not believe he has any responsibility for individual's behaviour. Here's my real point: when the left-wing hold up some lefty doyen as an idol or political saviour, rational people understandably point out that such lefties are being sheep, that they're engaging in hero-worship etc. We need to be honest, and do the same when non-leftists do it. Its not about attacking Peterson, it's about recognizing that to many people, Peterson's appeal is not so much what he says, but about the tribalism of politics, and even to do with religiosity. IMO, that kind of unthinking idolisation will eventually be harmful.
Hey Doc. I'm listening to your lectures and videos pretty much everyday. And I'm super grateful for what you do, what you stand for. Greetings from Poland man, you're a legend.

JP, thank you. *A man's young son was pestering him one day and to keep him occupied the father tore up a page from a magazine with a picture of the globe on it, the world as viewed from space and asked the young lad to tape it all back together. Off the young lad went about his task, but returned in a surprisingly short space of time for someone so young. The father looked at the mended page and indeed the globe was back in place; he asked his son how he'd managed to put it back together so quickly. The boy replied, "it was easy, there's a picture of a man on the back, I just put him back together and the world was back together" and so it goes when the man is all together so is his world.*
This man exudes rationality and wisdom. Is he Solomon for our times? Let us who have the ears to hear, let the man speak above the noisy din of ignorance that abounds today. God bless him.
a person's perception of reality is that person's reality as their perception is the influence of themselves, so it's not that different. because for each person their reality is theirs so each person will look at you funny when you say what they're perceiving isn't real, because it is. this is axiomatic and depends on perception tho, but both are possible interpretations so I don't think correct is the best term.
I believe there is objective reality, and then there is varying human perception, just because someone perceives a dancing goblin in front of them for example doesn't mean it's real as you say, if everything was perception then no one could be right or wrong about anything.
This is a terrifying message that I can't help but continually come back to because the information is hard to digest but is worth the time because the fabric of the world is in the balance
I totally agree with what JBP said. Before the communist China, there was an old saying - 修身,齊家,治國,平天下. which means to be a righteous person, one should act in these four elements - (1) cultivate the moral self (2) put the house/family in order (3) maintain the state in rightly order(4) make peace to the world. May be I'm an old school, I always tell my siblings or their children "God help those who help themselves". I think this zombie generation never heard of it!!!
Henry Ho there is too little moral teachings in the household nowadays. Too little wisdom taught to children nowadays and adults only expect results of unimaginable expectation. Like Fight Club. Dad never went to college so it’s important that I go. After graduation “now what?” “I don’t know, get a job”. “now what?” “I don’t know, get married” This sums up the lives of many today. The lack of wisdom by fathers and over loving mothers hindering growth. I used to hear “A man have a clean shave to show he’s young, fresh, confidence and stable” I learn this from my distant uncle rather from my father. The small pockets of wisdom that were given from their fathers and forefathers, lost in just 3 generations.
Isn't that a Confusianistic doctrine? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confucius In Confucius' time you payed your doctor when you were healthy. (Because then the doctor did a good job!) And you stopped paying when you got sick.
Things that are new seem to give the impression that they are "modern" "progressive" and "better" wisdom should show that it is not always the case, the old ways were a foundation that civilization of that era stood upon, discounting it as merely old and outdated or even devoid of anything to teach would be foolish. I am saddened to see that the china of old did not become strong enough to survive and influence the china we see today.
Wow! Dr. Peterson, you blow me away! I lost my beloved father and I was absolutely heartbroken. Not long after, I had an accident and my back was horribly injured. After the operation I had so much nerve damage the pain was unbearable. I had to take heavy narcotics just to stand being alive. Now, years later, I am in less pain and have been able to significantly reduce my pain meds. I am trying to put my life back together. I was hurt in 1998, so I have been struggling every day for many years with pain and depression. Your wise words are like balm for my soul. You say things that my father taught me years ago. I really needed to hear those things and all of your comforting, wise words. You have helped me immensely. Thank you so, so much
What makes a high school shooter? Students are taught throughout school, several humanitarian falsehoods: 1. The idea that things should be fair. If things are not fair it’s because of an evil oppressor. It may be a physical bully or an online troll that hides in anonymity while harming you. It is impossible to talk people out of their own pain. It’s as real as it gets to them. You will not convince a 13 year old that a derogatory post on Facebook is not the end of the world. They truly believe it is and it must be dealt with, regardless of consequence. A more physically developed student will do more than post a message online. 2. That equality of outcome indicates equality of opportunity. If things should be equal, then the results of the equality should be the manifestation. Nearly everyone believes they are the ideal person to judge equality. Nearly none of high school students believes they have been dealt justice. Again, the results are skewed against you because of evil oppression. That evil must be confronted in the most extreme manner. 3. That life is meant to pursue happiness and that suffering is bad and unnecessary. Life itself involves suffering. That is a normal aspect of life which is amplified during hormonal development years. You are not oppressed, you are human. That person’s pain is more real than anything they know. Students may think they are the only one suffering because life is supposed to be happy and fair. They are likely to become nihilistic, angry bitter and eventually homicidal. There are many more victimized classes now and nearly all kids are taught about types of oppression. They are not taught that they have it better here than anywhere nearly the entire world. They are not taught that freedom is not utopia but it is the best system in the history of the world. They are not taught that suffering is normal and temporary. They not taught to think for themselves, they are taught which way to think is correct.
Kids are no longer "taught", they are programed to internalize pain, weakness, hopelessness. They are told that "words, names, bullies" will permanantly damage them. They are told that discipline and standards are "abuse" and that difficulties or temporary sadness are "abnormal." Today our schools from kindergarten thru college are destroying the psyches of our children, making them so fragile that the only thing they know how to do is to lash out or cut themselves to death. This is our end. Thanks to the neo-marxist liberals and their ignorant "good intentions."
richard hendricks they are actually taught that they can be successfull if they just try hard enough. Believing in the american dream is what creates mass murders. The USA has created its own ghosts. Those mass murderers aren't young men that have to "clean their rooms", they've already cleaned their rooms and they are waiting for the reward, but it never comes. That's what Peterson doesn't get. Not everybody can be successfull, no matter how hard they try. The problem is not a lack of individual responsability, but an excess. That's why mass murders happen in the US, the most individualistic country, and not un Europe (most of the time).
@ matriaxpunk Your definition of mass murders is not mine. School shootings are, in my opinion, the result of kid judging fairness and Always deciding that they have been severely wronged. The USA is not Utopia. But it is one of the most fair systems in history. Please cite a system that has given people greater opportunity or fairness if you disagree. "et me remind you of the many people that have promised Utopia in the last 70 years. In all cases, they were convinced that things were unfair and they would retaliate: Mao Tse Tung’s “great leap forward” killed 45 million. Hitler’s ultimate race killed 6 million. Stalin’s workers revolution killed 50 million. Pol Pot Kmere Rouge killed 3 million. HO Chi Min, Kim Jong - Un . Hugo Chavez, Castro. And EVERYWHERE the fairness of communism has been implemented. More than 100 million Murdered in the name of making things fairer.
I wish he would just do an audio edition of the book. I’ve already read it, but I feel like he puts such emotion and meaning behind his voice and it deepens the context
You will enjoy the audio version, his emotions really come through, his voice breaks on occasion. I had to pull over from driving as my own tears were welling up 🙈
I've been a salt pillar, metaphorically speaking, for quite some time. Time to wake up, clean up the room, and fix my shit. The salt pillar is a reference to Lot's wife, who started on a journey, but felt the desire back to the old ways she just left behind, and was turned to a pillar of salt. That's a very apt metaphor for someone who for some reason fails to take the proper steps, slides back to his/her old ways, and the change in him is halted. I have personally failed in a few ways to put his teaching to practice as clearly as I should have, and as such my life has still in many areas continued that slow but certain downwards spiral towards chaos. So time to wake up, shape up, open the eyes, and clean the room. I'm not sure how common this is among his followers, but this is written as a wake-up call: do, for God's sake, or for your own at least, put the lesson into practice as if your life depended on it (in many ways it does), and fix your shit. Don't stall it and leave it for later.
1 step is better than no step. Some things seem to big to fix but to start small is always a good start. Like losing weight, any exercise is better than none, a 20 minute walk is better than nothing but can be a start to everything when you see the fruits of that walk. Not walking means failure, giving up and not wallowing in victimhood. Not trying to fix things, no matter how small. I liked your comment.:-)
Thank you Dr. Peterson. I needed to hear all of this. Thank you. I am going to get your book 12 Rules for Life and at nearly 72, try to get the last years right !
Really happy that Peterson used a full video to articulate this topic. He's mentioned it in some of his lectures, but thankfully this video can bring more limelight to his conceptualization. Great as always! Thanks, Dr. Peterson
I'm crying right now ... In shame, or in hope, or maybe because i know i can be strong ... I'm thankfull, and bitterness is fading away as i write these words. But i'll be careful from now on. I'm a student, exiled in my room. A good student, i think. I know i can be better at what i want to be better at. I want to be better. Because i have been broken by this obsession of being better once ... But this time, i'll stay away from resentment of my own limitations and tragedy of my own mind frabicated along the hard years, learning more and more. I'm thankful to Dr Jordan B. Peterson. I'l try my best to be even better in the future. I'll try to be better. Better is a good word. That's all i want to be. Better.
I really want to share with you what helped me incredibly. I changed my view on what I would consider to be 'better'. I used to think my parents wanted me to have a high degree so I could get a good job. And everything would be fine from there on. I was wrong. I learned that's not the most important for them at all, actually they simply gave me the opportunity to achieve a high degree. But it wasn't a requirement at all. What they wanted, was a responsible child, that was capable of caring for herself. Keep my room tidy, be on time on meetings, make my own appointments, being able to cook and clean or shop for groceries, find a job and learn social skills, keep in touch with family, eat healthy and stay active, anything which seems really basic but is much more important than just a degree alone. So my perspective on better changed. Not so much being 'better'. If you eat unhealthy food, change that first. If you cannot clean your own room, change that first. If you fail to get to meetings on time, change that first. If you never call your parents, change that first. Start with a basic list like that. Focus on becoming the responsible person first. Thén work on what you can do even better.
Confess your sins so that your heart may heal, brother. We all have evil thoughts. Rather than focus on not having them, focus on replacing them with good thoughts. Serving the needy. Helping a neighbor. Befriend an outcast. It's the worship of self that leads to a dark path. Love for others leads to enlightenment.
I think that Professor Jordan's book '12 Rules for Life' will put an end to the careers of many psychotherapists. I'd better get myself a copy before it gets banned. I can hardly believe just how much better I now feel about life, the World, and the universe in general than I did before watching this video. 36 minutes and 39 seconds that can change your life for the better. Thank you very much Jordan Peterson.
My hope would be that Professor Peterson's work will spur on a new generation/style of psychotherapists n' thinkers. I do suspect there is something about the current approach that falls short in ways Peterson excels so strongly in, so it could be a worthwhile thing for new students of the field to consider his ideas too.
"I regard the mass shootings as symptomatic of the nihilism and psychological confusion that so deeply characterizes our society at the current time. " I agree. We have spent decades teaching our children that they are nothing but animals and there are no eternal consequences for their actions and we're stunned when some of them act on that belief.
I’ve read the book, listened to it as well, yet I am watching the video. Dr. Peterson one of the geniuses that we should learn from. They come from time to time to earth. Thank you Dr. for sharing your knowledge.
May 2022 Texas shooting of 19 children and two teachers brings this issue into sharp focus. Thank you, Dr Peterson, for sharing your insight and wisdom. There are lessons here for everyone.
I enjoyed the background on Nietzche. Also the storytelling type of commentary. This isn't a message for a school shooter, it's for everyone. The primitive nature of chaos and violence.
Indeed. Such a horrifying and awful problem, and so little intelligent public discussion of solutions. Good point made in today's WSJ editorial, that revitalizing private institutions is critical: churches, social clubs, charity groups, sports leagues, anything that brings us together for something good. These are the repositories of social capital (lessons from our ancestors) that Dr. P writes of. They all serve to help us look inward for change, and make ourselves owners of our destinies.
It's not bad that you are back here watching this again. It's a sign of commitment to be better. I see that as a great thing. So watch it as many times as you have too. I doubt you will ever not need to hear these kinds of things and if you ever do think you don't need to hear it.. well you probably really need to hear more than you know.
Is it weird to think about all of us seeing this notification and simultaneously paying attention to the same thing? I feel like this is an individual congregation. Does that make sense? Young men may not attend church so much but we sure attend Peterson giving a lecture.
Perhaps this is the next phase in Christianity's development. We desperately need something new, something with equal respect for science and religion. We need something that integrates the old and the new. I think psychedelics should play a role, too, even though I can't take them anymore because of my mental illness and my meds. :( Something very good is happening right now! :)
Such entrianed doctrines are slow to reconcile with new scientific findings, but what truly is amazing is the amnesia of people when that reconciliation happens. Search for John Paul II and evolution. There has already been a Papal decree that evolution does not contradict the teachings, as well as there being two stories of Creation, the first of which has God creating the animals before man.
I'm gonna say that *life* is extremely rare and intelligent life is infinately rare. So we humans are the most precious and good and wonderful thing we can know. 🇫🇮
@@markmartinez4155 depending on how you define good and wonderful yes it is possible but very hard. we humans at the core are typically neither good nor wonderful.
Thank you for posting this. I my senior year of high school, a student walked in through the open doors and started firing his shotgun. There was death, terror, and sorrow among everybody that day. The most amazing thing happened after the shooting. It genuinely shocked me at the time. Damn near all the survivors put aside our differences right then and there and all came together as friends. Even the people who gave me hell, who I'd resented deeply made sure I was okay. It is sad that it took such a tragedy to bring us all together, but none of us question it anymore and have continued for years to stay in contact and make sure everybody is still okay. That day, out of horrors, rose 2,000 friends. Beautiful things can arise, from human nature, out of even the most horrible situations. Again, thank you for this video today.
Dead Like Disco I'm not sure if I can echo Peterson's sentiment here but we need to cultivate the friendship that transpires without tragedy. The same friendship you were offered but without the threat of violence to induce it. It's a strange phenomenon.
BigEvan96 Absolutely. I truly believe the divide between us all can be healed through compassion. Maybe it starts with just sitting down and talking to each other, maybe not. I'm not too entirely sure how, but I know it can be done. It's always upsetting to me that people come together generally out of tragedy. I hope we can communicate before tragedy happens.
Thank you for resetting my life....I have two sons, and the motivation to take care of my own issues was finally reached after watching your talks, and the reading the 12 rules....I'm a grown man, and you have become a hero of sorts to me....so much so, I share my experience, and the whereabouts to see for themselves (your channel) with people who are interested. Thank you so very much!
Unfortunately the internet's meme of hating everything without thought (and mostly as a joke), includes anything remotely religious, may have turned the people away from this video that most needed to hear the message. Prefacing any mention of religion with a modern way of interpretation such as psychologically might prevent people from instantly switching off when they hear anything religious.
Things like Ps137 had me hating God for ages. I often think "fuck religion/religious folk" but love God & people very much! It takes a flag, religion, pathology or coin to make Humans really evil. What sort of idiot programmer would put the virus in his code on purpose?!?😂😆😅
Been listening to JBP for over a year now. Telling everyone that will listen about 12 Rules… Should be required reading in schools. Dr. Peterson, a bright light in this harsh world. Articulating his ideas so clearly. Probably too busy to shave. :)
Cynthia van den Bold Yes definitely! It's painful that children are confronted with gender unicorns instead and students are fed up with equity and white privilege nonsense
Given the concept of the sovereignty of the individual, I can imagine how impactful this chapter is given how the impact would expand over time in networks. I imagine that this chapter has and will long into the future save many lives directly and indirectly.
Dr. Peterson, I picked up the audiobook version of 12 Rules for Life. I'm so happy that you were the one who read it, there was something special about having your words read aloud with all your emotions coming through. Thank you for all the work you're doing.
Thank You Dr. Peterson. Having you read while I read along made the chapter come alive. I appreciate your understanding and your compassion for the human condition. I will strive to get my house in order.
Your words penetrated down to the bone. I have been working to set my house in order for some time now and you have arrived at just the right time with just the right words.
When I hear Dr. Peterson speak I feel like when I read things like the constitution or the Declaration of Independence. He conveys a deeply thought out message that I cant describe in any way other than deeply true. So much of what we hear these days are shallow platitudes and packaged outright propaganda that even these heavy topics feel refreshing. Thank you!
"Put your house in perfect order before you criticize the world" Sounds a lot like the old saying "get the log out of your own eye before you get the stick out of your neighbor's."
@@EastsideHilltops No, it is that the only ones fit to challenge our current masters must be of a high order. We don't need the confused and misguided making this any harder than it has to be. (edited for my typical typos)
I like this book a lot and chapter (number 4) is what I'm currently on. Everyone who ever comes into existence ought to learn this concept... "Before you try to fix the world, fix your country. Before you try to fix your country, fix your state. Before you try to fix your state, fix your city. Before you try to fix your city, fix your family or home. Before you try to fix your family or home, fix yourself and your own thoughts." Let's all start there, then we'll have no need to fix the world, because we can start within, which instantly fixes the rest of the list, instantly and upwards. Blessings to all.
stourwer ... the book absolutely goes into depth, unlike anything I've seen. I think I understand your presuppositions: that fixing oneself does not necessarily equate to fixing the rest of the world, considering that we all have different ideas of what an ideal world would be like. The vegan / meat example is a good one. "If I were a vegan how could I mandate to anyone that they stop eating meat?" Let's make sure we're not skipping any of the steps. If I sincerely and wholeheartedly make myself a vegan, it's very likely that when I choose a spouse, she will also be a vegan. It is likely that our children will also have our values and be vegans. Of course, they are free to choose what they like. (I would not force my kids to remain vegan for the sake of my own values. Besides, what could it possibly hurt for them to eat cooked meat one time? Back to the point...) Suppose that my kids also form close ties with other vegans, and the small vegetarian or vegan community created by my extending family then branches out into the community, and gets leadership positions in the ruling class. I would imagine that at this point they would be living and leading by example, and would not need to mandate anything. Would they have a right to mandate? I don't know. Would they be leading by example? I'm sure of it. There is an excellent historical case in Old Testament literature where a few people willfully chose to be vegan for 10 days. In this case study, they literally looked healthier than the others around them who were given the finest meats to eat (works cited: Book of Daniel, chapter 1). I especially like your example because lately meat has tasted less and less delicious to me (real talk) and I am personally working on becoming a vegetarian.
The sad thing is, Peterson will say this profound wisdom and some people will still label him with the same evils he is trying to help others over come.
+M McQuarrie it's all about personal accountability/responsibility; some are fortunate to be taught this as children and others of us have to seek it. we find what we seek.
Pity them , he's not perfect , but he does scroll up our cultures ills well. Unlike others he offers a prescription not just a doom
So you're saying the wage gap is a complete myth and lobsters don't exist?
None that actually listen to what he has to say
The Beat Fabrik exactly, now go clean... Yadda Yadda Yadda....
Precious comment, thanks.
Very admirable!
Jordan.
I cried too but I thought why am I crying? I'm glad someone else cried too.
I cried on n off through the whole thing. Mainly because of my daily struggles between being a good honest person or a demonic device for Satan's will. I don't believe in a God or devil but good and evil r the foundations of humanity.
Truth is not subjective.
It is what it it is regardless of one's perception.

Something Jordan has taught me. A man with a purpose is a force to be reckoned with. A righteous man with a righteous purpose is unstoppable. Strength to you Dr. Peterson. You are necessary to we, the fatherless lost.
And to women disaffected with modern feminism& intersectionalism
Meanwhile, "12 Rules for Life" is getting banned in New Zealand. That's too much irony for one day.
Daniel Brooks why would they do that?
Tell me more.
The book was banned by one bookstore chain, and has since been restored.
Look. A nihilist entered the chat.
@Tiktaalik don't be so jealous.
Dr. Peterson, giving away a chapter of your book for free this way is just the sort of grace filled action I've come to expect from you. You are a very fine man. As a man without parents, I am glad and proud that the universe has given me the wisdom to consider you a role model.
Well said.
And as a man with parents you help me to appreciate them even more.
Finally a worthy father figure I can look up to.
I am glad you enjoyed the reading and do not mean to be rude, I will simply tell you that "giving away a chapter" is also (possibly in any reality/sub universe) known commonly as ADVERTISING. Thanks and regard.
TheStuF - too cynical
Oh Gosh Dr.
SO TRUE!

As JBP calls it "the perfect mode of being."
If he's really following his wife then he clearly isn't doing this for the fame like you said here "I don’t believe it really matters to him." And I also agree that he isn't going to be "known" in his lifetime and I don't think JBP knows that either. But the millions of people who can say literally "I owe him my life" will carry his legacy idk how far into the future. Could spark a golden age of consciousness galaxy wide in 500 years.
Dr. Peterson, you are a treasure to mankind.

It’s a cycle my friend. Just like the Hebrews in the OT. Keep praying.
That was so beautifully spoken with such an endearing and beautiful heart behind your words. Bless you too as we all wish blessing on JBP. 😘
What do you mean by lied to as soon as we come out of the womb? Like santa, tooth fairy stuff or god? Or something else?
I'd like to know what you meant by "lies", too. It's kind of vague.
An old man told his grandson, "my son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all."
"One is Evil. It is anger, jealously, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, and truth."
The boy thought about it and asked, "Grandfather, which wolf wins?"
The old man quietly replied, "the one you feed."
Jim Davis GOOD SHIT. hope i survive.
But the white wolf has compassion, caring, strength and the ability to recognize what is in the best interests of all.”
“To feed and care for both means they will serve you well and do nothing that is not a part of something greater, something good, something of life.”
“Feed them both and there will be no more internal struggle for your attention, and when there is no battle inside you can listen to the voices of deeper knowing that will guide you in choosing what is right in every circumstance.”
“Peace, my son, is the Cherokee mission in life. A man or woman who has peace inside has everything. A man or woman who is pulled apart by the war inside him or her has nothing. How you choose to interact with the opposing forces within you will determine your life. Starve one or the other or guide them both.”
Jim Davis heard the Native American version, still good story. Wonder how many their are.
Jim Davis *Not that simple. But good for a child.*
I watched the footage of the stoneman school shooter talking to his brother after the atrocity. His brother walked in and said, “I fear that you did this because I never said I love you enough. So I’m here to say, I love you.”
The shooter burst into tears, hearing that shattered his whole world, and made what he had done suddenly real to him.
ouf! reminds of a ted talk i just saw where the speaker said he wanted to shoot his peers when he was in school and it was only the compassion of his only friend that prevented him of doing so.

"He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." This is very relatable to your lesson. I love how deeply you covered that. These are fundamentals we've lost sight of. Thank you for your part in bringing it back.
Dr. Peterson, the world is a better place because of you.

Wow... As usual, standing ovation. Peterson is a ray of hope.

Anyone else listening to this after the mass shooting by a sadly bitter 18 year old in Texas this past week??
Me 🙋🏻♀️ I was just about to ask the same question.
who is Armand?
@@dreamcore Great Question Indeed! Cannot say for sure, but it appears to be someone possibly working for the government as an IDF Informant who was used to groom the 18yr old boy. In my 54 years, I have learned that it all comes down to 1 thing, choices. The choice I made years ago created the reality I live today.
I am 57 and I agree completely. My kids are in their 30's now, and I told them when they were 18 or 19 that the decisions they make over the next few years will set their path for the rest of their lives...they are doing well and seem to have made some good choices.
@SadRahne
Yes...and I believe person A has an even greater chance at a good life, provided they WANT ONE.

To believe that I am capable of such violence, instead of thinking that the killers were somehow monsters or aliens, would be too uncomfortable for me to face."
I've seen people like this. Their pacifist nature doesn't come from morality, but laziness. It's easier to believe that whatever you don't look at, doesn't exist.

Such a bogus ideology too. What good is a world that cannot be contemplated, if not to produce organisms that can do so?
It is arrogant to presume we are the only organism that can contemplate.
For a religious perspective:
God gave us free will, and dominion over the world.

Void, keep in mind that the god-emperor died in a ditch, as a giant worm. :-) Oh, spoilers!

Never underestimate another person's reality.
another person's _perception_ of reality*
I know it's a small correction, but an important one
a person's perception of reality is that person's reality as their perception is the influence of themselves, so it's not that different. because for each person their reality is theirs so each person will look at you funny when you say what they're perceiving isn't real, because it is. this is axiomatic and depends on perception tho, but both are possible interpretations so I don't think correct is the best term.
I believe there is objective reality, and then there is varying human perception, just because someone perceives a dancing goblin in front of them for example doesn't mean it's real as you say, if everything was perception then no one could be right or wrong about anything.

“now what?” “I don’t know, get married”
This sums up the lives of many today.
Who is this by
Isn't that a Confusianistic doctrine? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confucius
In Confucius' time you payed your doctor when you were healthy. (Because then the doctor did a good job!) And you stopped paying when you got sick.
This "Zombie generation" would say "If you're gonna try and wise me up, make it quick".

I really needed to hear those things and all of your comforting, wise words. You have helped me immensely. Thank you so, so much
What makes a high school shooter?
Students are taught throughout school, several humanitarian falsehoods:
They not taught to think for themselves, they are taught which way to think is correct.
richard hendricks this should be top comment.
"What you focus on, represents your reality" Buddha.
100% this
Kids are no longer "taught", they are programed to internalize pain, weakness, hopelessness.
They are told that "words, names, bullies" will permanantly damage them. They are told that discipline and standards are "abuse" and that difficulties or temporary sadness are "abnormal."
Today our schools from kindergarten thru college are destroying the psyches of our children, making them so fragile that the only thing they know how to do is to lash out or cut themselves to death.
@ matriaxpunk
Your definition of mass murders is not mine. In all cases, they were convinced that things were unfair and they would retaliate:
Mao Tse Tung’s “great leap forward” killed 45 million. Hitler’s ultimate race killed 6 million. Stalin’s workers revolution killed 50 million. Pol Pot Kmere Rouge killed 3 million. HO Chi Min, Kim Jong - Un . Hugo Chavez, Castro. And EVERYWHERE the fairness of communism has been implemented. More than 100 million Murdered in the name of making things fairer.

Sad to be here after Texas shooting... Problem is that the people to need to here this will never find this video.
Lahbreca Great comment.

That is admirable. If only more people strived to be better...
DANS NEMESIS well said!
Better hurry.......
My hope would be that Professor Peterson's work will spur on a new generation/style of psychotherapists n' thinkers. I do suspect there is something about the current approach that falls short in ways Peterson excels so strongly in, so it could be a worthwhile thing for new students of the field to consider his ideas too.
Listening to this as I clean my room.

"I regard the mass shootings as symptomatic of the nihilism and psychological confusion that so deeply characterizes our society at the current time. "
I agree.
Thank you Dr. for sharing your knowledge.
my fave jbp quote " what makes you think you're a reliable judge of what it is that you're up to" chills every time
May 2022 Texas shooting of 19 children and two teachers brings this issue into sharp focus.
Peterson is entering sage mode
Darius Brown That’s hilariously just about right 😂
Lol yes
This seems apropos, today, the day after the shootings in Texas and Ohio.
I very much agree. I pray that people are able to comprehend his wisdom.
I wish I didn't need to keep coming back to this video :(
@@bjnartowt very true, here we all are, wanting to hear Peterson's wisdom again.
It's not bad that you are back here watching this again. It's a sign of commitment to be better. I see that as a great thing. So watch it as many times as you have too. I doubt you will ever not need to hear these kinds of things and if you ever do think you don't need to hear it.. well you probably really need to hear more than you know.
Jordan Peterson... Please take care of your health and don't tour more than you have to.
There has already been a Papal decree that evolution does not contradict the teachings, as well as there being two stories of Creation, the first of which has God creating the animals before man.
total sense. An alignment if you will.
And a lot of you have the same sheepish characteristics as those sitting in the pews.
ImNotJoshPotter we are basically going to church from the comfort of our couches lol. What a time we live in!!!!!!
It's good to hear this reading. It's good to listen to this advice again and again because none of us ever become immune to corruption of the soul.
Damn, this guy should become a psychology teacher.
He's a professor.
DAT'S THA JOKE
Yeah man, he's good enough to work at Harvard
AYYYYY I like your name
Dr. Peterson works as a professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Toronto.
“The wisdom of the past was hard earned.” Dr., thank you.
I'm gonna say that *life* is extremely rare and intelligent life is infinately rare. So we humans are the most precious and good and wonderful thing we can know. 🇫🇮

“Traditions are answers that have been discovered to enduring questions.”
- Sir Roger Scruton
Dead Like Disco
I'm not sure if I can echo Peterson's sentiment here but we need to cultivate the friendship that transpires without tragedy.
Possibly one of the best things online, the Jordan Peterson channel, and this video in particular.
"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?". Jeremiah 17:9
Bought the book last Friday. I love it. But listening Peterson himself reading it it's beautiful. Thank you for your wisdom.
Goku/Vegeta stare
Been listening to JBP for over a year now.
Telling everyone that will listen about 12 Rules…
Should be required reading in schools.

Doctor, people like you restored my belief in mankind. I salute you

mistrust and wrong interpretation is what brings fear and ultimately conflict.
Had to pause the video and come down here to comment about the beard.
Ain't easy being high on the dominance hierarchy. (Sarcasm)

He definitely looks better with the beard.
This is the video that came to mind after I heard the news about the Uvalde mass shooting (May 2022).
Your words penetrated down to the bone. I have been working to set my house in order for some time now and you have arrived at just the right time with just the right words.
The media shouldn't even mention the name of the shooter, only the victims.
AntiquityCentury21 yeah but then they’d miss out on that sweet sweet ad revenue.
Agreed. Notoriety is one of the biggest motivations.
The media have learned nothing decades after "Natural Born Killers" dramatized the phenomenon.
We never hear about killers unless they fit the MSM narrative, let alone the survivors.
It's Okay to Eat Mayo
True, notice the shooter was hispanic? Had he been white his name would be everywhere.
This was such a hard-hitting lecture. Thank you for this Dr. Peterson.

(edited for my typical typos)
More like “Ye who is without sin may cast the first stone”
I like this book a lot and chapter (number 4) is what I'm currently on. Everyone who ever comes into existence ought to learn this concept...
"Before you try to fix the world, fix your country.
Before you try to fix your country, fix your state.
Before you try to fix your state, fix your city.
Before you try to fix your city, fix your family or home.
Before you try to fix your family or home, fix yourself and your own thoughts."
Let's all start there, then we'll have no need to fix the world, because we can start within, which instantly fixes the rest of the list, instantly and upwards.
Back to the point...)
Suppose that my kids also form close ties with other vegans, and the small vegetarian or vegan community created by my extending family then branches out into the community, and gets leadership positions in the ruling class.
I especially like your example because lately meat has tasted less and less delicious to me (real talk) and I am personally working on becoming a vegetarian.
stourwer ... great response! You actually might really enjoy reading the book by Jonathan Haidt called The Righteous Mind
sadly most are simply unable to step past their own shit in order to hear anything but their own voice in their heads
