It use to be the players would play to the mentality but not the role, so even if you had a player on attack with a defensive mentality they would not attack. Now they do, the difference now is, with a lower mentality they will take less Risk. Bust The Net has done some testing with this, and its actually better to have more players on Attacking roles when playing a Defensive mentality, because they will get into the space, but will also come back on defense as well.

I think 5:40 was the bit I needed to know the most when I was starting to play the game. Where you press and when isn't only about telling the team to press high, mid or low. It's also about where players are placed on the pitch and their roles with it. I don't want to defend 1 for 1 close to my goal and when I attack I want to create 2 vs 1 situations. It's why I might play supporting strikers(not necessarily set on support) up top in a low block and have at least one DM, if not two.

I got the gist of tactical styles throughout your videos but I personally do not have a general understanding of player roles and what do they do on the pitch. For example, what is the difference of having a DLP instead of a BWM in a 433 DM formation? I need information on what player roles are of a good combination with each other. Also, when I click 'Analysis' , I tend to go berserk because I see too many red areas or dots, making me thinking i'm doing something wrong.
This is how I have understood it so take this with a grain of salt. In short, DLP is as the name suggests a deep-lying playmaker so it looks to hold position and distribute the ball to teammates. Also as it is a playmaker, the other players will be looking to give the ball to a playmaker so it gets more ball touches than for example BWM. BWM is a ball-winning midfielder so it looks to roam around instead of holding position and to take the ball from the opposition and after it tries to give the ball to a more technical teammate e.g. DLP, Regista, or AP. Generally in a midfield of 3, you want to have a runner (mezzala, bbm, cm on attack, etc.), a playmaker (dlp, ap, regista, etc.), and a holding player (dm, dlp, cm on support/defend with right instructions).

For example, I used to get template tactics of the 433 and could not understand anything. Okay, DLP SUP in DM + BBM & MEZ ATT.. boom won the league. I want to fully understand roles and how they work in-conjunction with each other, that is the real science.
@@Goodlip19 Winning the league doesn't really mean anything if your player material is superior to other teams, your tactics won't matter nearly as much. Also, certain roles are overpowered in the match engine and then you can build tactics that might not make sense on paper but will own in the match engine. IMO best way to learn how the roles work is to study them from forums and guides and also to just make a tactic with certain role combinations and then watch it in 2D in a match with comprehensive highlights or a full match setting. There you can see clearly how the roles interact with each other and where you leave gaps.
in addition to my comment in this thread, "Analysis" is a nice tool for a basic look at your pitch coverage but don't worry about it too much. Firstly as managers we have to make those trade-offs consciously (a WB(A) will leave red behind them in a 2-man D-line, but we want the guy to attack, it's intentional). Then there's also the fact that the game will show you even more red if the player isn't Accomplished in that position. So yeah, it's nice as a heads-up but don't worry about trying to cover it in green.

personally, I think if you want a certain defensive shape then that's how you should line it up in your formation - so 541 is exactly that, and it can morph into an attacking 343 if you want via roles. First thought tho is that the striker needs to be a TMs or CFs, that feels like the best way to do it
In FM 24 you see your opponent AI playing long balls and switching sides like it was a cup of coffee. For us, trying to lift some balls in the air in open spaces behind their defense? A nightmare. I tried everything. It’s a rigged ME.
For sure, although you'll have to pay some attention to where your wide players are and who they pick up. As @Grimgrim-sd7lg said a DM could also be really useful as it cuts passing lines through the middle

Are you gonna pull the boys back like set a mid block and reduce the pressing intensity ? I usually concede a goal when the game is around 70 - 90. I am playing my team with 4-2-3-1 atm.
This has been a very well explained, in depth video about defending in FM. Probably the best I've seen so far. I play a 433 possession tactic with Inter Milan in FM23 and I got trounced by Liverpool. I really don't want that to happen again, so I'm looking into mid block tactics. What formations work best in a mid block, other than the 433?

Is it good idea to keep the width with wingers this year like the real life managers such as pep and arteta? Also I found that IW role with "stay wider" instruction works better this year than the previous FM's. Have you noticed any significant differences between winger role with "cut inside" PI and IW role with the "stay wider" PI? Which one should I use if I want my wingers to keep the width without the ball and cut inside and create with the ball on posession based approach? My second question is that, which tempo setting is the best for possesion based approach, slower or higher?

Honestly I can't answer the first one with total authority YET because I'm still testing it, but from basic experiments with it the winger tends to hold width a lot better, and cut inside from a wider position when they have the ball. It's something I'm still trying to look at! Second question's easier though - lower tempo is generally better for possession. With a high tempo your players will ping a pass even before they come under pressure, while with lower tempo they'll take a bit more time, wait for a bit of pressure and for a teammate to get into space before passing it. So with higher tempo you tend to lose the ball more often, whereas a short passing, slow tempo game (make sure you give your players passing options tho!!) is better for max possession. Your players' quality is a variable, as is the available space on the pitch. If you are 433DM and the opposition is a gegenpress 4231, it may be tough.

New sub 👍 amazing video mate really clear and some great ideas. I've played football manager since 2005 but I still play a Si,ilar style no matter the team. I love the idea of a Lowe block and compress the game against bigger teams rather than going toe to toe.
be a bit judicious there - much more often means your players jump further out of their position to press. OI means they'll specifically jump on that player - but if you have much more on as well, they might all have pressed the previous guy, meaning they can't get to the OI'ed guy fast. I'd suggest either using a few specific press OI with balanced TIs, or do a broad team setup with no OIs

hundred percent! I still find low blocks the hardest to implement even with clear ideas, but it's so satisfying when it works
